    On the night before the Heritage Classic in Edmonton, there were nine games that took take place across the NHL.

    News

    • The NHL’s Department of Player Safety has suspended Buffalo D Connor Clifton for two games for an Illegal Check to the Head of New Jersey F Nico Hischier.  Per the terms of the suspension according to the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, Clifton will also be forfeiting $34,722.22.  That money will go into the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

    • Canada Post unveiled a commorative stamp honouring ther legacy and life of the NHL’s first Black player, Willie O’Ree, as part of the NHL’s Heritage Classic festivities.  The stamps are now available to pre-order and will be available to purchase at Canada Post offices beginning October 30.

    • Joe Thornton has announced his retirement from the NHL.  Thornton played in 1,714 games and amassed 1,539 points (430 goals, 1109 assists).  Thornton also won the Art Ross trophy as well as the Hart trophy.

    Anaheim Ducks v. Philadelphia Flyers – 1p ET

    • In Philadelphia, the Flyers welcomed the Ducks to town and in the first Anaheim got two goals when Ryan Strome scored his second and then Frank Vatrano scores his sixth on an Anaheim power play. In the second, the Ducks took the 3-0 lead when Frank Vatrano scored his second of the contest and then Adam Henrique scored his first of the year as the Ducks took the 4-0 lead. Then, Philadelphia would get on the board with a pair of goals from Cam Atkinson and Travis Konecny. As the contest moved to the third, Trevor Zegras scored his first on an Anaheim power play and then Brett Leason scored his second to give Anaheim the 6-2 lead. Then, Frank Vatrano completed the hat trick but then Joel Farabee scored for the Flyers. However, the Ducks would fly by the Flyers for the 7-4 win.

    Seattle Kraken v. Florida Panthers – 6p ET

    • In South Florida, the Panthers hosted the Kraken and in the first Seattle would take the 1-0 lead when Jared McCann scored his fourth of the season, In the second, Seattle took the 2-0 lead with Eeli Tolvanen’s first of the season but then Florida got ono the baord when Gustav Forsling scored his first of the season on a Panthers power play. Then, Matthew Tkachuk scored his first of the season as the Panthers tied the contest 2-2. In the third, Nick Cousins scored his first as the Panthers would down the Kraken 3-2.

    Detroit Red Wings v. Boston Bruins – 7p ET

    • In an Original Six matchup in Boston, the Bruins hosted the Red Wings and in the first period, Boston took the 1-0 lead when Pavel Zacha scored a power play goal, his second goal of the season and then the B’s took the 2-0 lead with a goal from Charlie McAvoy. After a scoreless second, Detroit got on the board when Joe Veleno scores his fifth of the season but then David Pastrnak scored a pair of goals, one on a penalty shot and the other on an empty Detroit net, as the Bruins got back in the win column with the 4-1 win over the Red Wings.

    New York Islanders v. Columbus Blue Jackets – 7p ET

    • In Columbus, the Blue Jackets hosted the Islanders and in the first New York took the 1-0 lead when Kyle Palmieri scored his third of the year. After a scoreless second, Matt Martin scored his first of the year as the Islanders shutout the Blue Jackets 2-0.

    Winnipeg Jets v. Montreal Canadiens – 7p ET

    • In Montreal, the Canadiens hosted fellow Canadian bretheren in the Jets and in the first Winnipeg took the 1-0 lead with a penalty shot from Adam Lowry. However, Montreal would get on the board when Justin Barron scored his third of the season. Then in the second, Adam Lowry scored his second of the evening followed by Nino Niederreiter scoring his second as the Jets took the 3-1 lead, but then Sean Monahan would score a power play goal for Montreal cutting the Winnipeg lead to one. Then in the third, Joel Armia’s first of the year tied the contest for Montreal. After a scoreless overtime session, Montreal’s Nick Suzuki scored the lone goal in the shootout as the Canadiens complete the comeback and get the 4-3 win over the Jets.

    Toronto Maple Leafs v. Nashville Predators – 7p ET

    • In Music City, the Predators would welcome the Maple Leafs for the lone time this season and in the first period, Toronto took the 1-0 lead when William Nylander scored a power play goal, his sixth goal of the season, but then Ryan O’Reilly scored a power play goal of his own, his third goal of the year, to tie the contest. In the second period, Toronto re-took the lead with Mark Giordano’s first of the year but the Ryan O’Reilly scored his second goal of the night, also on the power play, to tie the game for Nashville. After a scoreless third, Roman Josi scored the game winner as the Predators defeated the Maple Leafs 3-2.

    Ottawa Senators v. Pittsburgh Penguins – 7p ET

    • In the Steel City, the Senators visited Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins. In the first, Ottawa took the 1-0 lead when Ridly Greig scores a power play goal, his second goal of the year and then Brady Tkachuk scored his fifth of the year to give the Senators the 2-0 lead. In the second, Ottawa took the 3-0 lead with Dominik Kubalik’s first of the year but then Pittsburgh got on the bard when Sidney Crosby scored his fifth of the season. In the third, Brady Tkachuk scored his second of the night and then Drake Batherson scored his first. However, Pittsburgh’s Jake Guentzel scored his second of the year but the Senators hold on for the 5-2 win over the Penguins.

    • In Sin City, the Golden Knights hosted the Blackhawks in the annual “Vegas Day” game, in which the Golden Knights donned their white jerseys. In the first, Vegas took the 2-0 lead when Pavel Dorofeyev and William Karlsson scored. Then, Ryan Donato and Connor Bedard scored as the Blackhawks tied the game 2-2. After a scoreless second, Taylor Raddysh gave the Blackhawks the lead but then Shea Theodore tied the game for Vegas with his third of the year. Then in the overtime period, Philipp Kurashev scored on the Chicago power play, his first goal of the season, as the Blackhawks defeated the Golden Knights 4-3.

    San Jose Sharks v. Carolina Hurricanes – 7p ET

    • In Raliegh, the Hurricanes hosted the Sharks and in the first period Teuvo Teravainen scored a pair of goals, the first being on the Carolina power play, to give the Canes the 2-0 lead. After a scoreless second, Teuvo Teravainen would complete the hat trick as the Hurricanes shut out the Sharks for the 3-0 win.

    Buffalo Sabres v. New Jersey Devils – 7p ET

    • In New Jersey, the Devils hosted the Sabres and in the first Buffalo would take the 1-0 with a goal from JJ Peterka but then the Devils would respond when Alexander Holtz scored his second of the year. Then, Tage Thompson scored his fourth of the year to give the Sabres the lead again but Jesper Bratt scored to tie the game for the Devils. In the second, Erik Haula would score a shorthanded goal to give New Jersey the lead but Rasmus Dahlin scored his first of the year to tie the contest for Buffalo. Then, in the third Jack Hughes scored his fifth but the Dylan Cozens scored his third to make this a 4-4 game. Then, Erik Haula would score his second of the night as the Devils defeated the Sabres 5-4.

    Minnesota Wild v. Washington Capitals – 7p ET

    • In the Nation’s Capital, the Capitals hosted the Wild and in the first period, Minnesota took the 1-0 lead when Marco Rossi scored his third of the year but then Washington responded when Tom Wilson scored a shorthanded goal. Dylan Strome then scored on the Washington power play to give the Capitals the 2-1 lead. After a scoreless second, Ryan Hartman scored his fifth of the year to tie the game for the Wild. After a scoreless overtime session, the game moved to the shootout where John Carlson scored the lone goal as the Capitals would down the Wild 3-2.

    • The NHL announced that they have suspended Shane Pinto.
      • Pinto, RFA for the Ottawa Senators, has been suspended for 41 games for activities related to sports wagering.

      • Per Pierre Lebrun of TSN, the suspension is retro-active, and began with the Senators first game of the 2023-24 season.

      • And per Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, Pinto has an online gambling account in the US, and was flagged by a company that is a partner of the League because of unusual activity, and contacted the NHL’s head office as a result.

      •  The NHL’s investigation found no evidence of Pinto making wagers on NHL games.
      • Pinto becomes the first NHL player to be suspended in the online betting era.
    • In the PWHL, Minnesota has announced that they have signed forward Taylor Heise.
      • Heise was the first overall pick in the 2024 PWHL Draft.

    • Also in the PWHL, Ottawa would sign forward Lexie Adzija.

    • In Boston, the Bruins would welcome Anaheim for the lone time during the season and in the first Radko Gudas scored his first of the year to put the Ducks up 1-0. In the second, Boston tied the game with a power play goal by Charlie coyle and then the Bruins took the lead when Matt Grzelcyk scored his first of the year. Then, David Pastrnak scored his third to give Boston the 3-1 lead. In the third period, Leo Carlsson and Troy Terry both scored to tie the game for Anaheim. In the overtime session, Anaheim’s Mason McTavish scored the game winner as the Ducks defeat the Bruins 4-3.

    • In the Steel City, the Penguins hosted the Avalanche and in the first period, Reilly Smith scored a pair of goals to put Pittsburgh up 2-0. In the second, Lars Eller scored his first of the season to put the Pens up 3-0. Then in the third, Sidney Crosby scored his fourth of the season as the Penguins would shutout the Avalanche 4-0.

    • NHL Central Scouting released their Preliminary Players to Watch list for the 2024 NHL Draft.

    Washington Capitals v. New Jersey Devils – 730p ET

    • In New Jersey the Devils would play host to the Washington Capitals as both teams play in the second game of their back to backs coming off of yesterday’s Frozen Frenzy. In the first period the Caps would finally break free and get the first goal as Anthony Mantha would strike for his first of the season to give them the 1-0 lead. Then later in the first period Dylan Strome and Sonny Milano would score less than two minutes apart to give the Caps the 3-0 lead. Going into the second period the Devils would do a goalie change as Vitek Vanecek would replace Akira Schmid, and the Devils would respond in kind as Tyler Toffoli and Timo Meier would score 48 seconds apart to get them back within one. Then Nico Hischier would strike to give the Devils their third goal in 2:11 to tie the game at three, and Toffoli would strike for his second of the game to give the Devils the 4-3 lead. To open the third period the Caps would have an abbreviated powerplay, and Strome would net his second of the game to tie the game at four 18 seconds into the period. Then Connor McMichael would score to reclaim the lead for the Caps, and with 1:35 left in regulation Alex Ovechkin would get the empty netter for the Capitals to defeat the Devils 6-4.

    • The PWHL introduced their official logo.
      • The logo is made up of six distinct pieces, which portrays the six players on the ice and the league’s first six teams.
      • The primary color is purple, a color that signifies power and is often associated with ambition, both of which are symbolic of the PWHL players and the league’s formation.

    • The Washington Capitals recalled goaltender Hunter Shepard from Hershey of the AHL.
      • The Capitals would also loan goaltender Clay Stevenson to Hershey.

    • The Ottawa Senators signed goaltender Craig Anderson to a one day contract.
      • The contract allows Anderson to retire as a Senator.

    • The NHL announced that after consulting with the NHLPA and the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition, that players will now be able to use Pride Tape and other tape to represent social causes throughout the season.
      • The League idiotically banned the specialty tape, more specifically Pride Tape, before the season began.
      • Now the League needs to reverse course on Specialty Jerseys and bring them back too.

    • The NHL announced that Commissioner Gary Bettman has upheld Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson’s 4 game suspension.

    Toronto Maple Leafs v. Washington Capitals – 6p ET

    • To kick off the Frozen Frenzy the Washington Capitals would play host to the Toronto Maple Leafs, and in the first period the Leafs would strike first while on the powerplay as Morgan Rielly would net his first of the season to take the 1-0 lead. In the second period John Tavares, William Nylander, and Auston Matthews would score to grow the Leafs lead to four. However, late in the period Alex Ovechkin would net his first goal of season and the Caps first powerplay goal of the season to get them on the board. The goal would also mark Ovechkin’s 300th career powerplay goal, and the 3,000th in franchise history. It would be a scoreless third period as the Maple Leafs would go on to defeat the Capitals 4-1.

    Buffalo Sabres v. Ottawa Senators – 645p ET

    • In Ottawa the Senators would honor former goaltender Craig Anderson as they host his former team the Buffalo Sabres for some Frozen Frenzy action, and in the first period Jeff Skinner and Zemgus Girgensons would strike to give the Sabres the 2-0 lead. In the second period the Sabres would light it up as Skinner would net his second of the game and Alex Tuch and Tage Thompson would score for the Sabres. Jakob Chychrun would score for the Sens, but the Sabres would take the four goal lead into the second intermission. Then in the third period Vladimir Tarasenko, Josh Norris, and Mathieu Joseph would score for the Sens, but it would not be enough as Thompson would get his second of the game as the Sabres would hold on to defeat the Senators 6-4.

    Carolina Hurricanes v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 7p ET

    • In Tampa Bay the Lightning would take on the Carolina Hurricanes, and in the first period Brayden Point would score to give the Bolts the 1-0 lead. In the second period Alex Barre-Boulet would score to grow Tampa’s lead to two. then in the third period Nick Paul would score to give the Lightning the 3-0 victory over the Hurricanes.

    New Jersey Devils v. Montreal Canadiens – 715p ET

    • In Montreal the Canadiens would faceoff with the New Jersey Devils, and in the first period Justin Barron would score for the Habs to give them the 1-0 lead, but Alexander Holtz would score to tie the game at one for the Devils. In the second period Tyler Toffoli would strike for the Devils to take the 2-1 lead. Then in the third period Nico Hischier would net his first of the season and Toffoli would score his second of the game to give the Devils the 4-1 lead.     Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of October 16th through 22nd.

    First Star – Alex DeBrincat (RW – DET)

    • Alex DeBrincat lead the League in goals (5) and was second in points (8) in four games played for the Detroit Red Wings. To open up his week DeBrincat would record an assist in a 4-0 victory over Columbus on Oct. 16th, and on Oct. 18th against Pittsburgh he would record two goals and an assist in a 6-3 victory. Then on Oct. 21st against his former team DeBrincat would be held off the scoresheet by Ottawa in a 5-2 victory over the Senators, but to end the week he would record a hat trick plus an assist in a 6-2 victory over Calgary on Oct. 22nd.

    Second Star – Alexander Georgiev (G – COL)

    • Alexander Georgiev would go a perfect 3-0-0 with a 1.67 goals against average, .940 save percentage, and one shutout for the Colorado Avalanche. To start off his week Georgiev would stop 37 of 38 shots in a 4-1 victory over Seattle on Oct. 17th. Then on Oct. 19th he would record 18 saves for his 14th career shut out in a 4-0 victory over Chicago, and to close out the week Georgiev would make 23 saves in a 6-4 victory over Carolina on Oct. 21st.

    Third Star – Sam Reinhart (C – FLA)

    • Sam Reinhart would record five goals and an assist for six points in three games played for the Florida Panthers. Then to close out his week Reinhart would record two goals in a 5-3 loss to Vancouver on Oct. 21st.

    • In the Motor City, the Red Wings welcome the Flames and in the first period Detroit takes the 1-0 lead when Alex DeBrincat scores his sixth of the year and then Joe Veleno’s third of the year gives the Red Wings the 2-0 lead. In the second, Dylan Larkin’s third of the year puts Detroit up three but then Calgary gets on the board when Andrew Mangiapane strikes with his third of the year. Alex DeBrincat then scores his second of the night to give Detroit the three goal lead back but then the Flames respond with Yegor Sharangvoich’s first of the season. Then in the third, Jake Walman nets his first of the year to give Detroit the 5-2 lead and then Alex DeBrincat completes the hat trick as the Red Wings wash out the Flames for the 6-2 win.

    Boston Bruins v. Anaheim Ducks – 830p ET

    • In Anaheim, the Ducks welcome the Bruins to town and after two scoreless periods, the scoring starts when Mason McTavish strikes with his second of the year to put Anaheim up 1-0. Then, Boston scores three straight when Matthew Poitras scores two, his first goal being his first career NHL goal, and then Brad Marchand scores an empty net goal, his fourth of the season, as the Bruins down the Ducks 3-1.

    • In Tampa Bay the Lightning would take on the Toronto Maple Leafs in a rematch of last season’s first round playoff series, and in the first period William Nylander would open up the scoring for the Leafs, but a pair of goals from Nikita Kucherov and a tally from Alex Barre-Boulet would give the Bolts the 3-1 lead. Then after a scoreless second period Matthew Knies would net a pair of goals to tie the game at three for the Leafs to send the game to overtime. In the extra frame the Leafs would get to complete their comeback as John Tavares would score to give the Maple Leafs the 4-3 overtime victory over the Lightning.
