NHL News and Notes from Thursday, October 26th, 2023

News

  • The NHL announced that they have suspended Shane Pinto.
    • Pinto, RFA for the Ottawa Senators, has been suspended for 41 games for activities related to sports wagering.

    • Per Pierre Lebrun of TSN, the suspension is retro-active, and began with the Senators first game of the 2023-24 season.

    • And per Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun, Pinto has an online gambling account in the US, and was flagged by a company that is a partner of the League because of unusual activity, and contacted the NHL’s head office as a result.

    •  The NHL’s investigation found no evidence of Pinto making wagers on NHL games.
    • Pinto becomes the first NHL player to be suspended in the online betting era.
  • In the PWHL, Minnesota has announced that they have signed forward Taylor Heise.
    • Heise was the first overall pick in the 2024 PWHL Draft.

  • Also in the PWHL, Ottawa would sign forward Lexie Adzija.

Game Recaps

Anaheim Ducks v. Boston Bruins – 7p ET

  • In Boston, the Bruins would welcome Anaheim for the lone time during the season and in the first Radko Gudas scored his first of the year to put the Ducks up 1-0. In the second, Boston tied the game with a power play goal by Charlie coyle and then the Bruins took the lead when Matt Grzelcyk scored his first of the year. Then, David Pastrnak scored his third to give Boston the 3-1 lead. In the third period, Leo Carlsson and Troy Terry both scored to tie the game for Anaheim. In the overtime session, Anaheim’s Mason McTavish scored the game winner as the Ducks defeat the Bruins 4-3.

Seattle Kraken v. Carolina Hurricanes – 7p ET

  • In Raleigh, the Hurricanes hosted the Kraken and in the first Seattle scored twice when Oliver Bjorkstrand and Devin Shore socre but then Carolina got on the board when Martin Necas scored. After a scoreless second, Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored his fourth of the year as Carolina tied the game 2-2. In the overtime period, Martin Necas scored his second of the night as the Hurricanes would down the Kraken 3-2.

Winnipeg Jets v. Detroit Red Wings – 7p ET

  • In the Motor City, the Red Wings and Jets faced off and in the first Winnipeg took the 1-0 lead when Nikolaj Ehlers scored his first of the season and then the Jets made it a 2-0 game when Kyler Connor scored his fifth of the year. In the second, Detroit got on the board when Lucas Raymond scored his second of the year. Then as the contest moved to the third, Mason Appleton scored his third and then Nino Niederreiter scored his first of the year on an empty net as the Jets flew by the Red Wings for the 4-1 win.

Columbus Blue Jackets v. Montreal Canadiens – 7p ET

  • In Montreal, the Canadiens welcomed the Blue Jackets and in the first Coumbus got a pair of goals when Jack Roslovic and Emil Bemstrom, who scored a power play goal. In the second, Montreal got on the board when Nick Suzuki scored his first of the season but then Emil Bemstrom scored his second goal, also on a power play, as Columbus re-took the two goal lead. Then, Mike Matheson scored a power play goal for Montreal as the Canadiens would come within a goal. Then in the third, Sean Monahan scored his third of the year as Montreal tied the game 3-3. In the overtime session, Cole Caufield scored his fourth of the season as the Canadiens got the 4-3 win over the Blue Jackets.

Colorado Avalanche v. Pittsburgh Penguins – 7p ET

  • In the Steel City, the Penguins hosted the Avalanche and in the first period, Reilly Smith scored a pair of goals to put Pittsburgh up 2-0. In the second, Lars Eller scored his first of the season to put the Pens up 3-0. Then in the third, Sidney Crosby scored his fourth of the season as the Penguins would shutout the Avalanche 4-0.

San Jose Sharks v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 7p ET

  • In Tampa, the Lightning welcomed the Sharks to town and in the first Tampa got a trio of goals when Brayden Point and Michael Eyssimont scored their second of the year and then Steven Stamkos scored his third of the year on a power play. In the second, Brandon Hagel and Nicolas Paul would score their fifth goals of the season as the Lightning took the 5-0 lead. The in the third, Luke Glendening scored his first of the season as the Lightning cruised by the Avalanche for the 6-0 win.

Ottawa Senators v. New York Islanders – 730p ET

  • In Long Island, the Islanders hosted the Senators and in the first New York got a pair when Bo Horvat and Cal Clutterbuck each scored. In the second, Ottawa tied the contest up with a pair when Claude Giroux and Jakob Chychrun scored. Then in the third, Noah Dobson scored his second as the Islanders defeated the Senators 3-2.

Minnesota Wild v. Philadelphia Flyers – 730p ET

  • In the City of Brotherly Love, the Wild make their lone visit to the Flyers this season and in the first Travis Konecny scored his sixth of the year to give Philadelphia the 1-0 lead. In the second, the Flyers got a pair of goals when Sean Couturier and Bobby Brink scored to make it a Philadelphia 3-0 lead. In the third, Minnesota got a pair of goals when Dakota Mermis and Marcus Foligno score to bring the Wild within a goal. Then Owen Tippett scored his first of the year to put the Flyers up 4-2. Then Bobby Brink scored his second of the night to make it a 5-2 Philadelphia lead and then Travis Sanheim scored his first of the year as the Flyers flew by the Wild for the 6-2 win.

Toronto Maple Leafs v. Dallas Stars – 8p ET

  • In Dallas, the Stars hosted the Maple Leafs and in the first Toronto took the 1-0 lead when Morgan Rielly scored his second. In the second, Mason Marchment would tie the game for Dallas but then Mitchell Marner scored his second to give Toronto the 2-1 lead. In the third, Tyler Bertuzzi and John Tavares each score as the Maple Leafs strike down the Stars for the 4-1 win.
