    News

    • The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that they have suspended Winnipeg Jets defenseman Brenden Dillon.
      • Dillon would be suspended for three games for doing an illegal check to the head of Pittsburgh Penguins forward Noel Acciari on Tuesday night.
      • Dillon will forfeit $60,937.50 per the CBA based on his average annual salary.

    • The NHL announced that the 2025 Winter Classic will take place at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
      • The Blackhawks will play host to the St. Louis Blues in the outdoor game.
      • This will mark the seventh outdoor game for the Blackhawks (1-5-0), and the third for the Blues (2-0-0).
      • This will mark the second time the Blues and Blackhawks will faceoff in the Winter Classic (2017 at Busch Stadium).

    Tampa Bay Lightning v. New York Rangers – 7p ET

    • At Madison Square Garden the New York Rangers would play host to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and after a scoreless first period Jimmy Vesey would net his tenth of the season and Jonny Brodzinski would score to give the Rangers the 2-0 lead. Then in the third period Brandon Hagel would score for the Bolts, but Vesey’s second of the game would give the Rangers the 3-1 victory over the Lightning.

    Dallas Stars v. Toronto Maple Leafs – 7p ET

    • In Toronto the Dallas Stars would come to town to take on the Maple Leafs, and in the first period William Nylander would open up the scoring for the Leafs, but goals from Jamie Benn and Evgenii Dadonov would score to give the Stars the 2-1 lead. In the second period John Tavares would strike on the powerplay to tie the game at one for the Leafs, and then Auston Matthews would score to give the Leafs the lead. Then in the third period Dadonov would net his second of the game and Wyatt Johnston would score for the Stars, but goals from Mitch Marner and Nylander would give the Maple Leafs the 5-4 victory over the Stars.

    • The PWHL made a pair of huge announcements for a Takeover Weekend.
      • First the PWHL announced that on Saturday, March 16th Ottawa will take on Boston at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

      • Then the PWHL announced that on Sunday, March 17th Toronto will faceoff with Montreal at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.

    Calgary Flames v. Boston Bruins – 7p ET

    • In Boston the Bruins would return from the break with a visit from the Calgary Flames, and in the first period Andrei Kuzmenko would net his first as a Flame and Connor Zary would score to give the Flames the 2-0 lead. Then after a scoreless second period Pavel Zacha would score for the B’s, but goals from Jonathan Huberdeau and Noah Hanafin would score to give the Flames the 4-1 victory over the Bruins.

    Dallas Stars v. Buffalo Sabres – 7p ET

    • In Buffalo the Sabres would play host to the Dallas Stars, and in the first period Matt Duchene would score to give the Stars the 1-0 lead. In the second period Tage Thompson would score for the Sabres to tie the game at one, but Sam Steel would score to retake the lead for the Stars. Then in the third period the Stars would hold the Sabres at bay to take the 2-1 victory.

    Vancouver Canucks v. Carolina Hurricanes – 7p ET

    • In Carolina the Vancouver Canucks would come to town to take on the Hurricanes, and in the first period Jordan Martinook would score for the Canes while Elias Lindholm would net his first as a Canuck for the 1-1 tie. In the second period Lindholm would net his second of the game for the Canucks and Sebastian Aho would score for the Canes for the 2-2 tie. Then in the third period JT Miller would score to give the Canucks the 3-2 victory over the Hurricanes.

    Philadelphia Flyers v. Florida Panthers – 7p ET

    • In Florida the Panthers would take on the Philadelphia Flyers, and in the first period Carter Verhaeghe would score to give the Panthers the 1-0 lead. In the second period Travis Konecny would score to tie the game at one for the Flyers. Then in the third period Noah Cates would score to give the Flyers the 2-1 victory over the Panthers.

    Winnipeg Jets v. Pittsburgh Penguins – 7p ET

    • In Pittsburgh the Winnipeg Jets would come to town to battle the Penguins, and in the first period Kris Letang would score to give the Pens the 1-0 lead. In the second period Jeff Carter and Bryan Rust would score to grow the Pens lead to three. Then it would be a scoreless third period to give the Penguins the 3-0 victory over the Jets. Tristan Jarry would make 23 saves to earn the shutout.

    Montreal Canadiens v. Washington Capitals – 7p ET

    • In Washington DC the Capitals would take on the Montreal Canadiens, and in the first period Nick Suzuki would net a pair of goals followed by a tally from Michael Pezzetta to give the Habs the 3-0 lead. In the second period Alex Ovechkin would net his 10th of the season to get the Caps on the board and back within two. Then in the third period Rasmus Sandin would score for the Caps, but a pair of goals from Slafkovsky would give the Canadiens the 5-2 victory over the Capitals.

    Colorado Avalanche v. New Jersey Devils – 730p ET

    • In New Jersey the Devils would faceoff with the Colorado Avalanche, and in the first period Mikko Rantanen would strike first for the Avs, but Chris Tierney would score to tie the game at one for the Devils. In the second period Jesper Bratt and Dawson Mercer would score to give the Devils the 3-1 lead. Then in the third period Cale Makar and Samuel Girard would score to tie the game at three for the Avs, but Luke Hughes and Erik Haula would score to give the Devils the 5-3 victory over the Avalanche.

    Colorado Avalanche v. New York Rangers – 7p ET

    • In the Garden, the Rangers welcomed the Avalanche back to New York City. In the first period, a late goal from Nathan MacKinnon put Colorado up 1-0. In the third, Artemi Panarin scored his 31st of the year to even the score for New York. In overtime, Alexis Lafrenière scored his 13th of the year as the Rangers got the 2-1 win over the Avalanche

    New York Islanders v. Toronto Maple Leafs – 7p ET

    • In Toronto, the Maple Leafs hosted the Islanders and in the first a goal from Mathew Barzal gave New York the 1-0 lead. In the second, Mitch Marner scored his 21st goal on the year to tie the contest for Toronto but then Kyle MacLean scored his first career NHL goal to put the Isles back in the lead. In the third, John Tavares scored on the power play to tie the game for Toronto but then Pierre Engvall scored the game winner as the Islanders downed the Maple Leafs 3-2.

    First Star – Auston Matthews (C – TOR)

    • Auston Matthews would record two goals and two assists for four points in two games played during the NHL All Star Game, which would also see him take All Star MVP honors.

      • Samelsson will have surgery for an upper body injury.

      • Jim Hiller has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

    • The Winnipeg Jets and Montreal Canadiens would make a trade.
      • The Jets would acquire forward Sean Monahan.
      • The Canadiens would acquire a 2024 1st Round Pick and a 2027 Conditional 3rd Round Pick.

    • The NHL announced that they will have the 2025 NHL 4 Nations Face-Off.
      • The 4 Nations Face-off will feature Canada, Sweden, Finland, and the United States.
      • Each team will play three Round Robin games, and the two teams with the best records will face off in the Championship Game.
      • The Face-Off will feature the 3-2-1-0 points system and 10 minute 3v3 OT with shootout in the Round Robin.
      • The 4 Nations Face-Off will replace the 2025 NHL All Star Game.

    • Unfortunately, the NHL and NHLPA announced that they will stupidly be shutting down the League so players can go play in the 2026 and 2030 Olympics.
      • Just very disappointing and unacceptable.

    NHL 3 Stars of the Month – Mac Goes Back to Back

    Today the National Hockey League has announced the Stars of the Month for the month of January 2024.

    First Star – Nathan MacKinnon (C – COL)

    • Nathan MacKinnon would lead the League with 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points in 12 games for the Colorado Avalanche. MacKinnon, who was also the First Star for December, would find the scoresheet in all twelve games he played, and would extend his point streak to 13 games. MacKinnon would also extend his home point streak to 25 games, and would record multi-point games seven times including his four goal and one assist night against Washington on Jan. 24th.

    Second Star – Stuart Skinner (G – EDM)

    • In Nine appearances for the Edmonton Oilers, Stuart Skinner would go a perfect 9-0-0 with a 1.33 goals against average, and a .953 save percentage. Skinner’s netminding would help guide the Oilers as they embark on a 16 game winning streak that they are on going into the All Star break.

    Third Star – Elias Pettersson (C – VAN)

    • Elias Pettersson would record 14 goals and seven assists for 21 points in 13 games played for the Vancouver Canucks as he prepares for his fourth All Star appearance. Pettersson would lead the League with goals, game winning goals (5), and overtime goals (2) for the month of January. Pettersson would score in nine of his 13 games played, and would have five multi-point games. Pettersson would also become the first player in NHL history to score the game inning goal in four consecutive road games.

    Today the National Hockey League has announced the Rookie of the Month for the month of January 2024.

    Brock Faber (D – MIN)

    • Brock Faber would led all rookies with 11 assists and 13 points in 14 games played for the Minnesota Wild. Faber would also lead all rookie defenders in total minutes (355:37) and average time on ice (25:24). He would also have 38 blocked shots (first among rookies).
    • Faber would edge out defenseman Simon Nemec (NJ) and forwards Logan Cooley (ARI), Ridley Greig (OTT), and Alex Laferriere (LA) for the honor.

    • The Columbus Blue Jackets announced that forward Adam Fantilli is out injured.
      • Fantilli will be sidelined for eight weeks due to a calf laceration.

    • The Carolina Hurricanes announced that goaltender Frederik Andersen has resumed on-ice conditioning.

    • The Calgary Flames and Vancouver Canucks would make a trade.
      • The Canucks would acquire forward Elias Lindholm.
      • The Flames would acquire forward Andrei Kuzmenko, defense prospects Hunter Brzustewicz and Joni Jurmo, a 2024 First Round Pick, and a 2024 Conditional 4th Round Pick.
