PWHL Stars of the Week – Watts Turns it on for Top Honors

Today the Professional Women’s Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of March 18th through 24th.

First Star – Daryl Watts (LW – OTT)

    • Watts is named first star for the first time this season after the forward had four goals in two games played last week, including a hat trick against Toronto. Her output moved her into a tie for third in the PWHL in goals scored with eight, and a tie for ninth in overall scoring with 13. Ottawa won both of its games last week, with Watts notching the game-winning-goal in each contest. First, her team won 3-0 against New York, which moved them past Boston in the standings and into a playoff position. Then, on March 23, Ottawa ended Toronto’s 11-game win streak with a 5-3 win, propelled by Watts’ hat trick. The 24-year-old had a powerplay marker, the game-winner in the third, and iced the game with an empty netter. Watts was also +3 with nine shots on goal in last week’s games. With their two regulation wins last week, her team now sits five points ahead of fifth-place Boston and just four back of MontrĂ©al, who sit in third.

Second Star – Brianne Jenner (C – OTT)

    • Jenner is named one of the PWHL’s three stars of the week for the second time in three weeks— she was named the third star for the week ending March 10. In two games played last week, Ottawa’s captain had five points (2G, 3A), the most in the PWHL. Jenner now has 5-10—15 in 19 games played and moved into a tie for sixth place in league scoring. In her team’s first game of the week—a 3-0 win against New York on March 16— Jenner provided the assist on the game-winning-goal and added the insurance marker in the third period. The 32-year-old followed up that performance with her first three-point-game of the season, which came in a key matchup against first-place Toronto. Her team ended Toronto’s 11-game win streak with a 5-3 win— Jenner had a goal and two primary assists in the tilt, a key factor in Ottawa’s victory. Jenner now has four multi-point performances in her last five games and sits second in team scoring, two points behind team leader Kateƙina MrĂĄzovĂĄ.

Third Star – Natalie Spooner (RW – TOR)

    • Spooner added to her league-leading goal total last week, notching three goals in two games played. She now sits at 15 tallies on the season, six more than the next best in the PWHL. In her team’s first game of the week, Spooner scored the game-winning-goal in the third period, a powerplay marker, which extended Toronto’s win streak to 11. The native of Scarborough, ON leads the PWHL in powerplay goals with five, and is the only Toronto player to have multiple tallies on the advantage. On March 23 against Ottawa, Spooner added two more goals, including her first shorthanded marker of the season. The 33-year-old was also +3 with 11 shots on goal last week. Spooner’s trio of tallies moved the forward to the top of the PWHL scoring race with 15-5—20 through 19 games played, one more point than Alex Carpenter (NY), who now sits in second place.

PWHL Stars of the Week – Schofield Earns First Star Honor

Today the Professional Women’s Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of March 11th through 17th.

First Star – Kendal Coyne Schofield (RW – MIN)

    • Coyne Schofield collected two goals and two assists s in two games played last week. The output raised her season’s total to 6-7—13 and propelled her into the top five in league scoring with 13 points — tied with Ottawa’s Kateƙina MrĂĄzovĂĄ (6-7—13) and New York’s Ella Shelton (4-9—13) and second in team scoring behind Grace Zumwinkle (9-7—16). Coyne Schofield had a goal and an assist in each contest. She scored the game-winning goal against Boston on March 13, a 4-0 win for her team, adding the assist on the insurance marker. On March 16, she helped her team break away in the third period against New York, putting up an assist and a goal just 16 seconds apart en route to a 5-1 statement win at home. Minnesota’s captain was +6 in last week’s games, with nine shots on goal, as her team secured two regulation wins. They now sit tied in points in the PWHL with Toronto at 33 apiece, most in the league.

Second Star – Michela Cava (LW – MIN)

    • Cava is named to the PWHL 3 Stars of the Week for the first time this season after a breakout week. After entering the week with one goal through her team’s first 16 games Cava had three goals in two games-played.—. In her first contest, against Boston on March 13, Cava provided the insurance marker in a 4-0 win. On March 16, Cava had a pair of goals—the first time she’s recorded multiple points this season. Cava scored the game’s first goal, then added her second at the beginning of the third period, a crucial tally after New York scored late in the second period to make the game 3-1. The 29-year-old more than doubled her season point total last week to 4-1—5 and moved up to a tie for third on Minnesota in goals scored.

Third Star – Kali Flanagan (D – TOR)

    • In her only game last week, a 2-1 win against MontrĂ©al in Pittsburgh on March 17, Flanagan provided the key offensive spark for her team with a goal and an assist. She assisted on Hannah Miller’s first-period goal which opened the game’s scoring. In the second period with the game tied 1-1, Flanagan tallied from just above the goal line — her third goal of the season. Thanks in part to Flanagan’s offensive contribution, Toronto extended their winning streak to 10 games and now sits in first in the PWHL standings. It was the first multi-point game this season for the 29-year-old, who was also +2 as she doubled her season point total to four.
