NHL Daily – Hattys and Firsts

On Wednesday in the NHL we would be treated to six games that would feature hattys and firsts for only the second day of the 2023-24 season.

News

  • The Washington Capitals announced their official Opening Night roster.
    • As part of their announcement, the Capitals loaned forwards Ivan Miroshnichenko and Riley Sutter to Hershey (AHL) and recalled forwards Connor McMichael and Aliaksei Protas from Hershey (AHL).
    • Forward Max Pacioretty will start the season on Long Term Injured Reserve (LTIR), and defenseman Joel Edmundson will start the season on Injured Reserve (IR).

  • The New Jersey Devils announced that they have signed head coach Lindy Ruff to a multi-year extension.

  • The Buffalo Sabres announced that they have signed defenseman Owen Power.
    • Power would sign a seven year contract with an AAV of $8.35 million.

  • The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that they have suspended Vegas Golden Knights forward Brett Howden.
    • Howden would be suspended two games for an illegal check to the head of Seattle Kraken forward Brandon Tanev in Vegas on Tuesday night.
    • Howden will forfeit $19,791.66 per the terms of the CBA and based on his average annual salary.

Game Recaps

  • Ottawa Senators v. Carolina Hurricanes – 7p ET
    • In Carolina the Hurricanes would open up their 2023-24 season by hosting the Ottawa Senators, and in the first period Mathieu Joseph would open the scoring for the Sens to take the 1-0 lead. The Canes would get a chance to tie it up as Jesper Fast would be awarded a penalty shot, but Joonas Korpisalo would deny the opportunity to keep the Sens in the lead. In the second period Michael Bunting would score his first as a Cane to tie the game at one, and then Teuvo Teravainen would strike to give the Canes the 2-1 lead. Then in the third period Jordan Staal would score 20 seconds into the third period to grow their lead to two, but goals from Parker Kelly and Tim Stuetzle would tie the game at three for the Sens. However, Brady Skjei and Jaccob Slavin would score to give the Hurricanes the 5-3 victory over the Senators.

  • Montreal Canadiens v. Toronto Maple Leafs – 7p ET
    • In Toronto we would be treated to our first of two Original Six matchups as the Maple Leafs would play host to the Montreal Canadiens, and in the first period Jake Evans would score to give the Habs the 1-0 lead. In the second period the Habs would grow their lead as Alex Newhook would score 70 seconds into the period to give the Habs the two goal lead, but Noah Gregor would net his first as a Leaf to get them back within one, and then Auston Matthews would score his 300th career NHL goal to tie the game at two for the Leafs and William Nylander would score his first of the season to give the Leafs the 3-2 lead. Then in the third period Cole Caufield, Newhook, and Jesse Ylonen would score to give the Habs the 5-3 lead, but Matthews would score a pair of goals to complete the hat trick to tie the game at five for the Leafs to force overtime. After a scoreless five minutes of extra hockey it would be Mitch Marner in the shootout to give the Maple Leafs the 6-5 comeback victory over the Canadiens.
  • Chicago Blackhawks v. Boston Bruins – 730p ET
    • In Boston the Bruins would kick off their 100th Anniversary season with a visit from their Original Six rival Chicago Blackhawks, and in the first period Connor Bedard would score on the wraparound for his first career NHL goal and to give the Blackhawks the 1-0 lead, but later in the period Trent Frederic would score to tie the game at one for the Bs. In the second period David Pastrnak would score to give the Bruins the 2-1 lead. Then in the third period Pastrnak would net his second of the game with the empty netter to give the Bruins the 3-1 victory over the Blackhawks.
  • Winnipeg Jets v. Calgary Flames – 10p ET
