NHL Rookie of the Month – Celebrini Breaks Through for Top Honors

Today the National Hockey League has announced the Rookie of the Month for the month of November 2024.

    Macklin Celebrini (C – SJ)

    • San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini, who led all rookies in goals (7), points (12), game-winning goals (t-3) and shots on goal (45) across 14 appearances, has been named the NHL’s “Rookie of the Month” for November.

Celebrini edged Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf (5-2-1, 2.23 GAA, .925 SV%, 1 SO), Philadelphia Flyers right wing Matvei Michkov (5-5—10 in 12 GP), Sharks teammate Will Smith (3-6—9 in 13 GP), New York Islanders right wing Maxim Tsyplakov (2-6—8 in 15 GP) and Florida Panthers right wing Mackie Samoskevich (4-3—7 in 11 GP) for the honor.

      Celebrini, who returned from a 12-game absence on Nov. 5, also ranked among the top November rookies in even-strength goals (1st; 6), even-strength points (1st; 10), face-off wins (1st; 105), face-offs taken (1st; 207), total time on ice (2nd; 279:31), average time on ice (3rd; 19:58) and assists (t‑4th; 5).

The No. 1 overall pick from the 2024 NHL Draft recorded his first career multi-goal game on Nov. 7 vs. MIN (2-0—2). At 18 years, 147 days, he became the third player in franchise history to achieve the feat before his 19th birthday, joining Patrick Marleau (Nov. 18, 1997 vs. ANA) and Jeff Friesen (2x, most recently March 26, 1995 vs. LAK).

On Nov. 18 vs. DET, Celebrini (18 years, 158 days) became the third-youngest player in NHL history at the time of their first regular-season overtime goal, behind only Sidney Crosby (18 years, 101 days on Nov. 16, 2005) and Jordan Staal (18 years, 153 days on Feb. 10, 2007).

Celebrini, who added game-winning goals on Nov. 25 vs. LAK (2-1—3) and Nov. 29 vs. SEA (1‑1—2), finished the month on a four-game point streak (Nov. 25-30: 4-3—7). Through 15 total contests this season, he places among the leading rookies in points per game (1st; 0.93), game-winning goals (t‑1st; 3), goals (2nd; 8), points (3rd; 14), shots on goal (3rd; 47), shooting percentage (minimum: 1 SOG/GP; 4th; 17.0%) and assists (t-6th; 6).

Celebrini follows Michkov (4-5—9 in 11 GP in October) as a “Rookie of the Month” winner in 2024-25. He is the first Sharks player to receive the honor since center Tomas Hertl in October 2013 (8‑3—11 in 13 GP).

Mike’s STH Xperience – Getting Fishy on Black Friday

Welcome to Mike’s Season Ticket Holder (STH) Xperience!

This season is my first one as a Season Ticket holder for the Washington Capitals, and in place of doing Caps Game Recaps, I’ll be sharing my experience being a STH during the 2024-25 season. Here I’ll be sharing all of the photos that I take during pregame warmups, along with any FB/IG Reels and TikToks I create at the games.

I will also be doing this for any other games I may go to, whether it’s in Hershey for the Bears, or at other NHL venues for games.

It’s Black Friday, and the Washington Capitals break out the Screaming Eagle as they play host to the New York Islanders.

    #Caps50Facts

Heading into the 1995-96 season, both the Washington Capitals and New York Islanders unveiled completely rebranded looks for their teams. The Islanders debuted the iconic Fisherman logo, but it was not well received when it first debuted. However, today it is more appreciated by the fans.

However, the Capitals debuted the infamous Screaming Eagle, and it would last much longer than the Islanders Fisherman jerseys. The Capitals have brought back the Screaming Eagle on three occasions. Twice for the Reverse Retro Program, and this season as the 50th Anniversary alternate jersey.

    Thoughts on the Game

This was definitely a game the Capitals should have won in regulation, and not in overtime, but alas it did. I will praise the Caps for their resiliency and how they bounced back after giving up two goals after John Carlson’s was called back on a bogus goaltender interference challenge. I never knew you weren’t allowed to screen the goalie anymore.

The only problem with this was that the replay we were shown in the arena, Semyon Varlamov was able to play his position without issue, so why the reversal? Oh right, it’s the Islanders lol.

On a serious note, I think Dylan Strome and Tom Wilson had amazing games, and I loved the Nic Dowd goal in response to giving up the first goal of the game. It was a beauty. I also loved how Jakob Chychrun called game in overtime, and then rushed right to Logan Thompson to celebrate the victory.

Glad the Caps got the win, and ended their four-game losing streak at home.

  • NHL Stars of the Week – Werenski Earns Top Honors

NHL Stars of the Week – Werenski Earns Top Honors

Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of November 18th through 24th.

First Star – Zach Werenski (D – CLB)

    • Werenski topped defensemen and shared the League lead among all players with seven points (2-5—7) in three games to propel the Blue Jackets (9-9-2, 20 points) to a perfect week. He bookended the week with one assist in both a 5-1 win against the Boston Bruins Nov. 18 and a 5-4 shootout victory over the Carolina Hurricanes Nov. 23 (highlighted by skating a season-high 4.75 miles in the contest). In between, Werenski posted 2-3—5 (including the overtime winner) in a 7-6 triumph versus the Tampa Bay Lightning Nov. 21 to match the franchise record for points in one game and become the first Columbus defenseman with a five-point performance. Werenski’s sixth career overtime goal (all w/ CBJ) also moved him into a tie for second place in Blue Jackets history, behind only Seth Jones (8). The 27-year-old Werenski – who has 3-7—10 during an active five-game assist/point streak dating to Nov. 15 – shares the team lead with 20 points through 20 total appearances this season (6-14—20). He also paces the League in time on ice per game (26:05) and ranks among the top NHL defensemen in shots on goal (2nd; 76), goals (t-2nd; 6), points (t-2nd; 20), power-play goals (t-4th; 2), assists (t-6th; 14), power-play points (t-6th; 8) and power-play assists (t-9th; 6).
The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT

Second Star – Mikko Rantanen (RW – COL)

    • Rantanen also tied for the League lead with 2-5—7 in three games as the Avalanche (12-9-0, 24 points) completed an unblemished week. He notched two assists in a 3-2 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers Nov. 18, then scored the tying power-play goal in a 2-1 comeback win versus the Washington Capitals Nov. 21. Rantanen capped the week with 1-3—4, highlighted by the decisive goal, in a 7-4 triumph against the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers Nov. 23. It marked his 24th career four-point performance and second of the season (also Nov. 13 vs. LAK: 3-1—4). The 28-year-old Rantanen, who will represent Finland at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February, sits fourth in the NHL with 14-18—32 through 21 total contests in 2024-25. He also places among this season’s League leaders in game-winning goals (t-3rd; 4), goals (t-4th; 14), power-play goals (t-6th; 5), power-play points (t-6th; 11) and assists (t-8th; 18).
The Official Men’s Personal Care Products of TXHT.

Third Star – Joseph Woll (G – TOR)

    • Woll stopped 54 of the 56 shots he faced, going 2-0-0 with a 1.00 goals-against average, .964 save percentage and one shutout as the Maple Leafs (13-6-2, 28 points) extended their winning streak to four games dating to Nov. 13 to move into first place in the Atlantic Division. He earned his second career shutout (also Nov. 21, 2021 at NYI: 20 SV) with 31 saves – including 16 in the second period – in a 3-0 triumph against the Vegas Golden Knights Nov. 20. Woll then denied 23 shots in a 3-2 victory over the Utah Hockey Club Nov. 24. The 26-year-old Woll owns a 5-2-0 record through seven total appearances this season, leading NHL goaltenders (minimum: 7 GP) with a 2.00 goals-against average and ranking eighth with a .921 save percentage.

The New Jersey Devils come back to town to take on the Washington Capitals.

    #Caps50Facts

The Colorado Rockies moved to New Jersey and became the Devils for the 1982-83 season. The first time the Washington Capitals faced the Devils was on November 8th, 1982 in New Jersey. The Capitals and Devils tied 2-2, with Bobby Gould and Ken Houston scoring the goals while Pat Riggin stopped 18 of 20 shots faced for the Capitals.

The Capitals would go on to defeat the Devils the following 6 games to take the season series.

    Jersey Tracking

    Thoughts on the Game

Another home game, another home loss. The Capitals I thought played very well against the New Jersey Devils, but once again, penalties (especially phantom calls against the Caps for the second straight game), and bounces went against the Caps.

The good thing I will say is that this four game losing streak at home has been one goal games, not including the empty netter in the Pittsburgh game, so the Caps have been in them.

Next up the Caps are on the road in Florida and Tampa Bay before a Black Friday matchup with the New York Islanders. The Screaming Eagle also returns, so maybe that’ll give the Caps the luck they’ve been lacking.

    Thoughts on the Game

This would be a tough battle for the Washington Capitals as they hosted the Colorado Avalanche for their Hockey Fights Cancer night. With the loss of Alex Ovechkin for 4-6 weeks due to a fractured fibula in his left leg, the Caps found themselves in uncharted territory. This also being the second time the Caps have played the Avalanche in a week, the Avs also looked to avenge their loss to the Caps back in Colorado.

Let’s be honest. This game felt off. The officiating was very one sided, and the bounces went Colorado’s way. The first goal the Caps gave up was a pure fluke with the puck hitting off of Matt Roy’s foot and going right past Logan Thompson to tie the game at one. But of course the powerplay should never have been because Connor McMichael didn’t hook anyone. It was clear as day he didn’t hook the guy while going to the boards while battling for the puck, so that didn’t sit well either.

Caps just have to shake it off at this point and shift their focus to Saturday when they host the New Jersey Devils.

NHL Stars of the Week – McDavid’s Milestone earns Top Honors

Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of November 11th through 17th.

First Star – Connor McDavid (C – EDM)

    • McDavid became the fourth-fastest (659 GP) and fourth-youngest (27 years, 306 days) player in NHL history to reach the 1,000-point milestone, totaling 3-5—8 across three games to propel the Oilers (9-7-2, 20 points) to a 2-0-1 week. He factored on all four Edmonton goals (1-3—4), capped by the primary assist on Leon Draisaitl’s overtime winner, in a 4-3 victory against the New York Islanders Nov. 12. McDavid then posted 1-1—2 (as well as another overtime helper), scoring at 2:44 of the second period to become the 99th player in League history to record 1,000 points, in a 3-2 triumph versus the Nashville Predators Nov. 14. He added 1-1—2, including an assist on the tying goal with 1:29 remaining in regulation, in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs Nov. 16. McDavid, a five-time Art Ross Trophy winner, four-time Ted Lindsay Award winner and three-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner, ranks third in NHL history (minimum: 100 GP) with 1.52 points per game during his career (342-661—1,003 in 660 GP), behind only Wayne Gretzky (1.92) and Mario Lemieux (1.88). Second Star – Masson Marchment (LW – DAL)

    • Marchment produced three multi-point performances in as many contests, leading the NHL in goals (t-4), assists (t-5) and points (9) as the Stars (11-5-0, 22 points) completed a perfect week. He notched 1-4—5, sparked by a franchise record-tying four points in the first period (1-3—4), in a 7-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins Nov. 11. Marchment then registered 1-1—2 in a 7-2 triumph versus the Boston Bruins Nov. 14 before closing the week with both Dallas goals, highlighted by his ninth career game-winner, in a 2-1 victory against the Minnesota Wild Nov. 16. The 29-year-old Marchment, who established career highs in goals (22), assists (31) and points (53) in 2023-24 (81 GP), sits second on the Stars with 6-11—17 through 15 total outings this season. He – along with McDavid – is one of 44 NHL players (minimum: 10 GP) averaging at least one point per game in 2024-25.

Third Star – Andrei Vasilevskiy (G – TB)

    • Vasilevskiy became the fastest goaltender in League history to reach the 300-win milestone (490 GP), going 2-0-0 with a 0.50 goals-against average, .981 save percentage and one shutout as the Lightning (9-6-1, 19 points) won both of their games. Vasilevskiy earned his record-setting victory by stifling the NHL’s top team, the Winnipeg Jets (who entered the contest with one loss in their first 16 games of the season), making 23 stops in a 4-1 triumph Nov. 14. He followed that with a flawless 29-save performance for his 36th career shutout in a 4-0 victory against the New Jersey Devils Nov. 16. The 30-year-old Vasilevskiy, who won the Vezina Trophy in 2018-19, owns an 8-5-1 record through 14 total appearances in 2024-25, ranking in the top 10 in the League (minimum: 7 GP) in shutouts (t-2nd; 2), goals-against average (3rd; 2.15) and save percentage (7th; .920).
