NHL Stars of the Week – Matthews Nice Week

Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of April 8th through 14th.

First Star – Auston Matthews (C – TOR)

    • Matthews – who now is one tally shy of the 15th 70-goal season in NHL history and first since 1992-93 – shared the League lead with five goals in four starts (5-2β€”7) as the Maple Leafs (46-24-10, 102 points) completed a 2-1-1 week to lock up the No. 3 seed in the Atlantic Division. Matthews scored in all four of his appearances to extend his goal streak to eight games dating to March 30 (10-3β€”13) and point streak to 14 contests dating to March 19 (14-11β€”25) – each a career high. He posted 1-1β€”2 in both a 3-2 overtime victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins April 8 and a 5-2 triumph over the New Jersey Devils April 9. Matthews (2-0β€”2) then recorded his 18th multi-goal performance of the season – the most by any player since Alexander Mogilny in 1992-93 (24 w/ BUF) – to surpass Dave Keon for sole possession of third place on Toronto’s all-time goals list as the team suffered a 6-5 defeat to New Jersey April 11. Matthews added another marker in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings April 13 to move within one of the first 70-goal season since Mogilny (76-51β€”127 in 77 GP) and Teemu Selanne (76-56β€”132 in 84 GP w/ WIN) each achieved the feat in 1992-93. The 26-year-old Matthews, already a two-time Maurice β€œRocket” Richard Trophy winner (2021-22 and 2020-21), holds a 14-goal edge through 79 total contests in 2023-24 (69-38β€”107). He also ranks among this season’s leaders in even-strength goals (1st; 51 – a franchise record and the most by any player since 1992-93), shots on goal (4th; 352), power-play goals (t-4th; 18), plus/minus (t-5th; +35), points (6th; 107), shooting percentage (7th; 19.6% – minimum: 1 SOG/GP) and game-winning goals (t-10th; 8).

Second Star – Roman Josi (D – NAS)

    • Josi led defensemen and placed fourth in the NHL with 2-5β€”7 in three games as the Predators (47-29-5, 99 points) went 2-0-1 to secure their 16th playoff berth in the past 20 seasons. He collected a pair of third-period assists (including his 80th point of 2023-24) as Nashville rallied to earn its postseason-clinching point in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets April 9. Josi then reached the 60-assist milestone for the second time (also 2021-22: 23-73β€”96 in 80 GP) with another helper in a 5-1 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks April 12. He capped the week with 2-2β€”4, his eighth career four-point performance and first since Nov. 17, 2022 (0-4β€”4 vs. NYI), in a 6-4 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets April 13. The 33-year-old Josi, who captured the James Norris Memorial Trophy in 2019-20, sits third among defensemen – and 22nd in the entire League – with 23-62β€”85 through 81 total contests this season. Only two other active blueliners have produced multiple 80-point campaigns: Erik Karlsson and Cale Makar, both with two.

Third Star – Nazem Kadri (C – CAL)

    • Kadri paced the NHL with 4-4β€”8 in four games to propel the Flames (37-38-5, 79 points) to a trio of victories. He notched 1-1β€”2 (including the tying goal with 5:09 remaining in regulation and an assist on the overtime winner) in a 3-2 triumph versus the San Jose Sharks April 9 before being held off the scoresheet in a 4-1 defeat against the Los Angeles Kings April 11. Kucherov then registered three straight three-point performances, the third time he has accomplished the feat in his career (also April 23-26, 2022: 4-8β€”12 in 3 GP and Feb. 10-14, 2019: 4-7β€”11 in 3 GP). He collected three assists in a 4-1 victory against the Toronto Maple Leafs April 3 to surpass his franchise record for points in one season, established in 2018-19 en route to capturing the Art Ross Trophy (41-87β€”128 in 82 GP). Kucherov added 1-2β€”3 in a 7-4 triumph over the Montreal Canadiens April 4 to become the first Tampa Bay player to compile 90 assists in one season – and the second player on any team to reach the milestone in 2023-24, following Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid (31-99β€”130 in 74 GP), after no one had done so since 2006-07. Kucherov capped the week with three more helpers, his 10th three-assist and 22nd three-point game of the campaign, in a 5-4 defeat versus the Pittsburgh Penguins April 6. The 30-year-old Kucherov, who has points in six straight outings dating to March 27 (2-11β€”13), leads the NHL with 43-93β€”136 through 76 total appearances this season – three points ahead of second-place Nathan MacKinnon (48-85β€”133 in 78 GP w/ COL). Kucherov also ranks among the top 2023-24 performers in power-play assists (1st; 38), power-play points (1st; 51), assists (2nd; 93), shots on goal (t‑6th; 296), goals (t-7th; 43) and power-play goals (t-13th; 13).

Second Star – Sidney Crosby (C – PIT)

    • Crosby placed second in the NHL with five goals in four contests (5-1β€”6) as the Penguins (36‑30‑11, 83 points) completed a perfect week to extend their point streak to eight games dating to March 26 (6-0-2) and move within one point of the final Wild Card position in the Eastern Conference. Crosby recorded 2-1β€”3 in a 5-2 win against the New York Rangers April 1 to clinch his 19th career point-per-game season, a total achieved by only one other player in League history: Wayne Gretzky (also 19x). He followed that with two third-period goals as Pittsburgh rallied from a 3-1 deficit for a 6-3 victory over the New Jersey Devils April 2. Crosby, who was held off the scoresheet in a 4-1 triumph versus the Washington Capitals April 4, then scored in a 5-4 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning April 6 to become the seventh different player in NHL history to reach the 40-goal milestone at age 36 or older. The two-time Hart Memorial Trophy winner leads the Penguins in goals (40; 14 more than any other player), assists (45; three more than any other player) and points (85; 23 more than any other player) through 77 total contests this season as the team looks to become the first in League history overcome a nine-point deficit in its final 11 games to reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Third Star – Artemi Panarin (LW – NYR)

    • Panarin ranked second in the NHL with 2-6β€”8 across four games to guide the League-leading Rangers (53-21-4, 110 points) to a 3-1-0 week as they matched a franchise record for wins in one season (also 2014-15: 53-22-7). He notched one assist in a 5-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins April 1, followed by 1-1β€”2 (including a helper on the tiebreaking goal by Chris Kreider with 4:57 remaining in regulation) in a 4-3 triumph over the New Jersey Devils April 3. Panarin added an assist (on another third-period, tiebreaking goal by Kreider) in a 4-3 victory against the Detroit Red Wings April 5 before closing the week with 1-3β€”4 as New York rallied for a 5-2 win versus the Montreal Canadiens April 7. The 32-year-old Panarin sits fourth in the NHL with 46-69β€”115 through 78 total contests this season, second in franchise history behind only Jaromir Jagr’s 2005-06 campaign (54-69β€”123 in 82 GP). Panarin also places among the top 10 in the League for power-play assists (4th; 32), power-play points (4th; 42), assists (5th; 69), goals (6th; 46) and shots on goal (9th; 285) in 2023-24.

NHL 3 Stars of the Month – McDavid Owns March

Today the National Hockey League has announced the Stars of the Month for the month of March 2024.

First Star – Connor McDavid (C – EDM)

    • McDavid paced the League with 24 assists and 31 points in 15 games (7-24β€”31) to lift the Oilers (45-23-5, 95 points) into second place in the Pacific Division via a 10-3-2 March. McDavid, who became the first NHL player to accumulate 30 points in a calendar month since he accomplished the feat in December 2022 (14-17β€”31 in 15 GP), also ranked among the March leaders in power-play points (1st; 10), power-play assists (t-1st; 8), plus/minus (t-10th; +12), game-winning goals (t-11th; 2) and shots on goal (18th; 51). He collected points in 13 of his 15 contests, highlighted by 11 multi-point performances. That included his ninth career four-assist outing (March 21 vs. BUF), five three-point efforts and a stretch of seven straight multi-point games to close the month (March 19-30: 4-15β€”19). McDavid picked up his 100th point March 7 at CBJ to become the sixth player in League history to reach the milestone at least seven times and the first to do so in four or more consecutive seasons since 1992-93, when Steve Yzerman (6) and Brett Hull (4) both achieved the feat. McDavid then collected his 90th assist March 24 at OTT to become the first player to hit the mark since Joe Thornton in 2006-07 (92). The 27-year-old McDavid has appeared in 71 total games this season (29-97β€”126), placing among the top performers in assists (1st; 97 – the most by any player since 1992-93), power-play assists (t-1st; 35), points (3rd; 126), power-play points (3rd; 42) and plus/minus (t-6th; +32).

Second Star – Nathan MacKinnon (C – COL)

    • MacKinnon ranked among the March leaders in points (2nd; 27), shots on goal (t-2nd; 68), plus/minus (4th; +14), goals (t-4th; 11), assists (t-4th; 16) and power-play points (t-4th; 8) across 13 contests to power the Avalanche (47-22-6, 100 points) to their seventh straight playoff berth via a 10-2-1 month. He ran his home and overall point streaks to 35 (Oct. 19 – March 26: 29-48β€”77) and 19 (Feb. 13 – March 26: 13-25β€”38) games, respectively, before being held off the scoresheet March 28 vs. NYR. The former finished as the second-longest home point streak in NHL history – behind Wayne Gretzky’s unblemished 1988-89 home campaign (33-70β€”103 in 40 GP w/ LAK) – while the latter made MacKinnon the first player in League history to produce two separate point streaks of at least 19 games within the same season (also Nov. 20 – Dec. 27: 13-23β€”36). MacKinnon rebounded from his lone pointless outing with 2-2β€”4 March 30 vs. NSH, his eighth multi-point performance of the month, third with four points and second with multiple goals. The 28-year-old MacKinnon tops the NHL with 47-80β€”127 through 75 total contests this season, the second-most points in one campaign in franchise history behind Peter Stastny in 1981-82 (46-93β€”139 in 80 GP w/ QUE). MacKinnon also sits among the 2023-24 leaders in shots on goal (1st; 369), power-play points (2nd; 44), assists (3rd; 80), power-play assists (3rd; 34), goals (4th; 47), game-winning goals (t-4th; 9) and plus/minus (t-6th; +32).

Third Star – Filip Forsberg (LW – NAS)

    • Forsberg shared second place in goals (12) and finished fifth in points (23) across 13 outings (12‑11β€”23) to help the Predators (43-27-4, 90 points) move into the first Wild Card spot in the Western Conference via a 9-2-2 month, highlighted by a franchise-record 18-game point streak from Feb. 17 – March 26 (16-0-2). Forsberg found the scoresheet in all but one of his March appearances, ending the month on a nine-game point streak (March 10-30: 8-9β€”17) that also featured a Nashville-record seven-game goal streak (March 13-28: 8-7β€”15). Overall, Forsberg scored in nine of his March contests, registered seven multi-point performances and collected a trio of game-winning goals (March 7 vs. BUF, March 13 at WPG and March 23 vs. DET). He also potted his franchise-record ninth career hat trick (March 7 vs. BUF) – five more than any other player in Predators history – and reached the 40-goal milestone for the second time (March 26 vs. VGK) – a first in team history. The 29-year-old Forsberg has played in 74 total contests this season (41-43β€”84), placing among the League leaders in game-winning goals (t-2nd; 10), shots on goal (5th; 304), goals (9th; 41) and points (13th; 84).
