PWHL Stars of the Week – Spooner Rules for Top Honors

Today the Professional Women’s Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of February 12th through 18th.

First Star – Natalie Spooner (RW – TOR)

  • Spooner takes first star for the second consecutive week and is one of the ‘3 Stars of the Week’ for the third week in a row. The forward continues to demonstrate her goal-scoring prowess, recording a hat trick in Toronto’s game in Boston on February 14. With the trio of tallies on Valentine’s Day, Spooner added to her league-leading goal total — the 32-year-old now has 10 goals on the season, three more than the next-best. She also sits second in overall scoring with 11 points, just one behind league leader Alex Carpenter (NY). Additionally, Spooner had 12 shots in two games played last week with a plus-minus rating of +3. The Scarborough native’s strong play helped Toronto win both of its games and extend their winning streak to a season-best four games — moving them up to third place in the PWHL standings.

Second Star – Kristen Campbell (G – TOR)

  • Campbell started — and won — both of Toronto’s games last week, extending her personal winning streak to five games and her team’s winning streak to four. She posted a .954 save percentage and a 1.50 goals-against average and added an assist. In Toronto’s first game of the week on February 14, Campbell made 32 saves to secure the win and collected the assist, joining Emerance Maschmeyer (OTT) and Nicole Hensley (MIN) as the only goaltenders to record a point so far this season. Two days later at Scotiabank Arena in the ‘Battle on Bay Street,’ the 26-year-old made 30 saves to backstop her team to a 3-0 victory in front of a record-breaking crowd of 19,285. With the win, Campbell became the first goaltender to reach six victories on the season. She’s also the only goalie to have multiple shutouts this season.

Third Star – Kendall Coyne Schofield (LW – MIN)

  • Coyne Schofield played in three games last week, leading Minnesota to a 2-0-0-1 record and helping her team remain atop the PWHL standings. Overall, Minnesota’s captain had a goal and an assist, 12 shots on net and a plus-minus rating of +3. Coyne Schofield was noticeable on the ice in each of the three games, with her signature speed causing trouble for opposing teams all week. In her team’s first game of the week against Ottawa, Coyne Schofield had the primary assist on Maggie Flaherty’s game-winning-goal in the third period. Four days later, the 31-year-old scored her fourth goal of the season — her team’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Montréal— and added a game-high five shots on goal. Coyne Schofield is tied for third in points on Minnesota with six and, with 39 shots on goal, sits third among PWHL players.
