- The Colorado Avalanche announced that they have signed defenseman Devon Toews.
- Toews signed a seven year deal with an AAV of $7.25 million per season.

- The NHL Department of Player Safety anounced that they have fined Philadelphia Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway.
- Hathaway was fined $5000 for kneeing Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski on Thursday night.
Philadelphia’s Garnet Hathaway has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for Kneeing Columbus’ Zach Werenski.

- Arizona Coyotes v. New Jersey Devils – 7p ET
- In New Jersey the Arizona Coyotes would open up their season against the Devils, and in the first period Matt Dumba would record his first goal as a Coyote to take the 1-0 lead. In the second period Sean Durzi would also record his first as a Coyote to grow their lead to two, but a pair of goals from Jesper Bratt and a goal from Dougie Hamilton would give the Devils the 3-2 lead. Then in the third period Nick Schmaltz would score to tie the game at three and force overtime for the Yotes. After a scoreless five minutes of extra hockey it would be Nick Bjugstad in the shootout to give the Coyotes the 4-3 victory over the Devils.

- Pittsburgh Penguins v. Washington Capitals – 730p ET
- In Washington DC the Capitals would open up their season with a battle against their longtime rival Pittsburgh Penguins, and after a scoreless first period Evgeni Malkin would score to give the Pens the 1-0 lead. Sidney Crosby would then net a pair of powerplay goals to give the Pens the commanding 3-0 lead. Then in the third period Reilly Smith would net his first as a Penguin to seal the deal as the Capitals would fall to the Penguins 4-0.
