Nashville Predators v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 530p ET
In Tampa Bay the Lightning would play host to the Nashville Predators to open up the 2023-24 NHL season, and in the first period Nikita Kucherov would strike for the first goal of the season to give the Bolts the 1-0 lead. In the second period the Preds would strike back as Ryan O’Reilly would record his first career goal as a Predator to tie the game at one. Then in the third period Juuso Parssinen would strike 11 seconds into the period to give the Preds the 2-1 lead. The goal would also feature Filip Forsberg’s second assist of the game. But, the Lightning would tie things back up at two as Nick Paul would score on the powerplay. Then less than a minute later Brandon Hagel would be awarded a penalty shot and he would make it count as he would give the Lightning the 3-2 lead, but Tomas Novak would strike on the powerplay to tie the game at three for the Predators. However, Paul would net his second powerplay goal, and Kucherov would get the empty netter to get his second of the game to give the Lightning the 5-3 victory over the Predators.
Then in Pittsburgh the Penguins would open their season by hosting the Chicago Blackhawks as Connor Bedard would make his highly anticipated debut in what would be a new beginning for the Blackhawks as he faced off with his idol Sidney Crosby. In the first period Bryan Rust would open up the scoring for the Pens to take the 1-0 lead. In the second period Crosby would strike to grow the Pens lead to two, but Ryan Donato would score his first as a Blackhawk to get them back within one. The Donato tally would give Bedard his first career NHL point as he would get the secondary assist on the goal. Then in the third period Cole Guttman would score to tie the game at two for the Blackhawks, and late in regulation Jason Dickinson score and Nick Foligno would get the empty netter for his first as a Blackhawk to give the Blackhawks the 4-2 victory over the Penguins.

2023-24 Preview
The 2022-23 season proved to be a mixed bag for the Winnipeg Jets. They finished the regular season with a record of 46-33-3, earning a total of 95 points. This placed them 4th in the Central Division and secured them the Wild Card 2 spot. Despite making it to the playoffs, their journey was cut short as they lost to the Vegas Golden Knights in the First Round.

Quick Transition
After buying out Blake Wheeler, and trading Pierre-Luc Dubois, the Jets need to hope that they can get scoring from more than just Kyle Connor. The additions of Alex Iafallo and Gabe Vilardi will add some support, and with Mark Scheifele looking to re-establish himself, the Jets can be hopeful. Also, a healthy Nikolaj Ehlers is something the Jets are looking forward to as well.
On defense the Jets made no changes, and same in goal, as Connor Hellebuyck remains the number one guy between the pipes. However, the Jets did regain Laurent Brossoit, who just won the Stanley Cup with Vegas, and Colin Delia to add depth in net.

Questions Needing Answers
The biggest question ailing the Jets right now is about the futures of Scheifele and Hellebuyck. After departing with longtime Jets player Wheeler, the Jets made it known that they are looking to the future as well as the present.
With the Jets possibly needing to do a more proper retool or rebuild in the near future, one has to ask how long Hellebuyck, who was subject to trade rumors over the summer, could possibly remain with the Jets.
Looking ahead to the 2023-24 season, the Jets will aim to build upon their previous year’s performance. The team will rely on key players like Kyle Connor and Connor Hellebuyck to lead the way. What Nicklas Backstrom are We Getting?

The Stanley Cup champions are primed and ready to go for a shot to repeat and I wouldn’t doubt their ability to do so. Vegas has all the key ingredients needed and brought back the majority of those necessary ingredients. This franchise features a front office who knows how to win and go get what’s needed, a fantastic coaching staff with Coach Bruce Cassidy at the helm, a high end forward group that can score but also play well defensively too, a strong defense, and goaltending that can make the necessary teams for a championship team. While losing Reilly Smith via trade to the Penguins does hurt, re-signing Adin Hill who helped backstop this team to a title, and Ivan Barbashev who was a menace in the top six forward group since coming over in a trade are very key for what this team wants to do going forward.
Most of this championship team returns for another run and it wouldn’t surprise me if they get back to the Stanley Cup Finals and potentially win it all again. They key for the teams success like every team’s is to stay healthy and especially their captain Mark Stone. Having Stone in the lineup especially upon return was crucial in their championship run as he provides not just an offensive element, but he provides a very strong defensive forward element that does all the little things right by playing a full 200 foot game out on the ice. His leadership is highly valuable to this team as well considering it feels like having a great encouraging coaching out they’re on the ice as well as on the bench and in the locker room. Vegas has what it takes and are the team to beat and the current favorites to win it all once again.

2023-24 Preview
For the Vancouver Canucks, it was time to blow it up and start again. Vancouver missed the playoffs for the seventh time in eight seasons and the front office made moves. The only key pieces from last season’s opening night are Quinn Hughes and Tucker Poolman, however he may be heading toward a LTIR candidate due to lingering migraines.

Offense
F Elias Pettersson had a 102 point season, good for 10th, and J.T. Miller has to build on his 82 point season from last year. Likewise, Andrei Kuzmenko needs to prove that his 74 point season last year was not a fluke. As a defenceman, Quinn Hughes had a 69 assist season and looks to improve upon that. The Canucks finished 13th overall in scoring and 11th on the Power Play, and they look to improve upon those numbers despite the moves made among the organisation.
Defense
Hughes is a key piece upon the blue line and now that he will be paired with Ian Cole, along with Carson Soucy and Filip Hronek, the top four blueliners will be strong. The key items to focus on defensively is scoring, as they gave up an average of 3.61 goals per game, where they finished 25th, and then the penalty kill where they finished last in the NHL.

Overall Outlook
The Vancouver Canucks have a lot to look forward to but need to proceed with caution. G Thatcher Demko should be back to 100% but Spencer Martin and Arturs Silovs will each battle for the back-up role.
Things also look to improve as well because Head Coach Rich Tocchet will begin his first full season. For a team that is looking to strive for success and reach the postseason again, the Canucks will need to start off strong.

Kucherov, a former Art Ross Trophy winner, is known for his elite offensive skills and creativity. His vision and ability to find open teammates make him a dangerous playmaker. With his return from injury, the Lightning’s offense will receive a significant boost.
The Lightning’s offensive success is not solely reliant on individual performances. Head coach Jon Cooper emphasizes a structured system that encourages puck possession, speed, and effective puck movement. 2023-24 Preview
The St. Louis Blues had a challenging 2022-23 season, finishing with a record of 37-38-7 and accumulating 81 points. They ended up in 6th place in the Central Division and unfortunately did not qualify for the playoffs.

Reboot
Coming into the 2023-24 season the Blues reunited with forwards Mackenzie MacEachern and Oskar Sundqvist. Plus, they also added veteran forward Kevin Hayes. Outside of those moves, the Blues remained pat on their roster. With that in mind, the Blues come into the new season with the mentality of viewing 2023-24 as a reboot for them.
Also, players like Jakub Vrana and Kasperi Kapanen will be looked upon to prove why they were picked up at the trade deadline.

A Need to Refocus
One of the biggest needs for the Blues is for their star goaltender Jordan Binnington regaining his Stanley Cup winning form, and keeping his cool. Binnington the last couple of seasons has become a distraction for the Blues. His attitude and mind set has not been in the right place as witnessed by his constant need for picking fights with the opposing teams after giving up bad goals.
If Binnington can get back to his 2019 form, the Blues will have a better chance of being competitive. If not, Joel Hoefer is waiting in the wings for his chance to take that top spot in the crease.
Looking ahead to the 2023-24 season, the Blues have hopes for a fresh start. Players like Brayden Schenn and Jordan Binnington will be crucial to the team’s success. The organization is working hard to improve and overcome the challenges they faced in the previous season.

2023-24 Preview
Seattle was a nice surprise last season by making it to the Stanley Cup playoffs. They made some noise by knocking off the previous champions in the Colorado Avalanche in round one before pushing the Dallas Stars to the limit before losing in game seven of the second round. Overall, last season was a huge success and provides hope for this young franchise going forward.

The Kraken look to build on this and hope to take another step and keep making noise in the playoffs. Seattle brought in defenseman Brian Doumoulin who should be a big help on the backend, added Kaiser Yamamoto to the top and middle six forward group, and Pierre-Edourd Bellmare to the fourth line to bring some grit to that group. Winger Andre Burakovsky returns fully healthy after missing the remainder of the regular season and playoffs due to injury. If Burakovsky can stay healthy and produce, the two-time Stanley Cup champion can be a big factor in helping this Kraken make more noise in the regular season and especially in the postseason. Let’s not forget about Calder trophy wining center Matt Beniers. He had a phenomenal rookie season and was a big part of why Seattle had such a successful second year in the league. Wherever Beniers goes, this team will go to as he drives the play very well. I see the Kraken returning to the playoffs but still need a high end scoring piece if they want to go further in the playoffs.
