    • The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that they have fined Minnesota Wild forward Ryan Hartman.
      • Hartman was fined $4,427.08 for high sticking Winnipeg Jets forward Cole Perfetti on Sunday, Dec. 31st.
      • The fine is the maximum allowed per the CBA.

    • The NHL would name Chicago Blackhawks forward Connor Bedard Rookie of the Month for December, and for the second consecutive month in a row.

    • The NHL would name Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon First Star for December.
      • Auston Matthews (TOR) and Conor Hellebuyck (WIN) would round out the rest of the Three Stars for December.

    Boston Bruins v. Columbus Blue Jackets – 7p ET

    • In Columbus a busy night of hockey would begin as the Blue Jackets would play host to the Boston Bruins, and after a scoreless first period Kevin Shattenkirk would score to give the B’s the 1-0 lead, but Kent Johnson would score to tie the game at one for the Jackets. However, James van Riemsdyk would score to give the B’s the 2-1 lead. Then in the third period Danton Heinen and Trent Frederic would score to give the Bruins the 4-1 victory over the Blue Jackets.

    Carolina Hurricanes v. New York Rangers – 7p ET

    • At Madison Square Garden the Carolina Hurricanes would come to town to visit the New York Rangers, and in the first period Jack Drury and Andrei Svechnikov would score to give the Canes the 2-0 lead. In the second period Chris Kreider would strike for the Rangers to get back within one, but Jordan Martinook would score to retake the two goal lead for the Canes. Then in the the third period Jalen Chatfield and Michael Bunting would score and Svechnikov would net his second of the game to give the Hurricanes the 6-1 victory over the Rangers.

    Washington Capitals v. Pittsburgh Penguins – 730p ET

    • In Pittsburgh for the first time this season the Penguins would faceoff with the Washington Capitals, in the first period Tom Wilson would strike 55 seconds in to give the Caps the 1-0 lead. Then later in the period Beck Malenstyn, Martin Fehervary, and Alex Ovechkin would score to give the Caps the four goal lead, but Rickard Rakell would strike for the Pens to get on the board. In the second period Sidney Crosby and Jake Guentzel would score to get the Pens back within one. Then in the third period the Caps would withstand the Pens push, but the Capitals would hold on to defeat the Penguins 4-3.

    Montreal Canadiens v. Dallas Stars – 8p ET

    • In Dallas the Stars would play host to the Montreal Canadiens, and in the first period Jamie Benn would score to get the Stars on the board first, but goals from Nick Suzuki and Kaiden Guhle would give the Habs the 2-1 lead. In the second period Jordan Harris would score to give the Habs the 3-1 lead. Then in the third period Wyatt Johnston and Jason Robertson would score for the Stars, but Cole Caufield would score to give the Canadiens the 4-3 victory over the Stars.

    Calgary Flames v. Minnesota Wild – 8p ET

    • In Minnesota the Wild would go to battle with the Calgary Flames, and in the first period Andrew Mangiapane and Jonathan Huberdeau would score to give the Flames the 2-0 lead. In the second period Pat Maroon would score to get the Wild back within one. Then in the third period Blake Coleman would score to give the Flames the 3-1 victory over the Wild.

    Chicago Blackhawks v. Nashville Predators – 8p ET

    • In Nashville the Chicago Blackhawks would come to town to take on the Predators, and in the first period Gustav Nyquist would score to give the Preds the 1-0 lead. Then after a scoreless second period Ryan O’Reilly and Luke Evangelista would score to give the Predators the 3-0 shutout victory over the Blackhawks.     NHL 3 Stars of the Month – MacKinnon Unleashes for Top Honors

    Today the National Hockey League has announced the Stars of the Month for the month of December 2023.

    First Star – Nathan MacKinnon (C – COL)

    • Nathan MacKinnon would record 11 goals and lead the League with 18 assists and 29 points in 15 games played for the Colorado Avalanche. MacKinnon’s 29 points would set an Avalanche/Nordiques franchise record for most points in a calendar month that was previously set in February of 1981 by Peter Stastny. Mackinnon recorded at least a point in 14 of his 15 games, and would record the first ever 4 goal game in Avalanche team history.

    Second Star – Auston Matthews (C – TOR)

    • Auston Matthews would lead the NHL with 15 goals, and would record six assists for 21 points in 12 games played for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Matthews would score in nine of his 12 games played, and would include a point streak of seven games. Matthews would record five multi-goal games.

    Third Star – Connor Hellebuyck (G – WIN)

    • Connor Hellebuyck would go 7-0-2 with a 1.88 goals against average, and a.934 save percentage for the Winnipeg Jets. Hellebuyck would tie for first in wins, but would come in second to Seattle Kraken goaltender Joey Daccord for goals against average and save percentage.

    Today the National Hockey League has announced the Rookie of the Month for the month of December 2023.

    Connor Bedard (C – CHI)

    • Connor Bedard his second consecutive Rookie of the Month honor after recording five goals and ten assists for 15 points in 15 games for the Chicago Blackhawks. Bedard would lead all rookies in powerplay assists (5), powerplay points (5), and shots on goal (50).
    • Bedard would edge out forwards Adam Fantilli (CLB) and Marco Rossi (MIN), and goaltenders Pytor Kochetkov (CAR), Samuel Ersson (PHI), and Devon Levi (BUF) for the honor.

    NHL Stars of the Week – Aho’s on Fire for Top Honors

    Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of December 25th through 31st.

    First Star – Sebastian Aho (C – CAR)

    • Sebastian Aho would lead the NHL with nine assists and 11points (2 goals) in three games played for the Carolina Hurricanes. To open up his week Aho would record a goal and three assists in 5-2 victory over Nashville on Dec. 27th, and then on Dec. 28th he would record four assists in a 5-4 victory over Montreal to become the first player in franchise history to record four points in back to back games and first in the NHL since 1999 to accomplish the feat. Aho would also become the fourth player in Hurricanes/Whalers history to reach 500 points. Then to close out the week Aho would record a goal and two assists in a 3-2 victory over Toronto on Dec. 30th.

    Second Star – Artemi Panarin (LW – NYR)

    • Artemi Panarin would record five goals and one assist for six points in three games played for the New York Rangers. Panarin would open his week with a goal and an assist in a 5-1 victory over Washington on Dec. 27th, and on Dec. 29th he would record a goal in a 4-3 loss to Florida. Then to close out the week Panarin would record a hat trick to give the Rangers the 5-1 victory over Tampa Bay on Dec. 30th.

    Third Star – Luke Hughes (D – NJ)

    • Luke Hughes would record three goals and two assists for five points in three games played for the New Jersey Devils. To start of his week Hughes would record a goal in a 4-3 overtime victory over Columbus on Dec. 27th, and then on Dec. 29th he would record a goal and two assists in a 6-2 victory over Ottawa. Then to close out his week Hughes would record a goal in a 5-2 loss to Boston on Dec. 30th.

    • In Minnesota, the Wild welcomed the Jets back to the State of Hockey and in the first Minnesota took the 1-0 lead with a goal from Marcus Foligno. In the second, Winnipeg tied the game when Adam Lowry scored his seventh of the year. In the third, Minnesota re-took the lead wiht a power play goal from Frederick Gaudreau but then Vladislav Namestnikov scored a power play goal of his own to even the score. Then, Dominic Toninato scored his first of the year to lift the Jets past the Wild for the 3-2 win.

    • In an Original Six match-up in the Motor City, the Red Wings welcomed the Bruins back to Detroit. In the first, Trent Frederic scored his eighth of the year to put Boston up 1-0. In the second, Trent Frederic scored his second of the night to put Boston up 2-0 but then Detroit responded with a pair of goals from Jake Walman, scoring his ninth, and Ben Chiarot, scoring his third. In the third, Charlie Coyle scored his 13th to put Boston back up a goal and then Jake DeBrusk scored an empty net goal to give the Bruins the 4-2 lead. Then, a power play goal J.T. Compher brought Detroit within a goal but Pavel Zacha scored an empty net goal of his own as the Bruins downed the Red Wings 5-3.

    • In Ottawa, the Senators welcomed the Sabres back to the Canadian capital city and in the first, Ottawa took the 1-0 lead when Jakob Chychrun scored his seventh and then Zack MacEwen netted his first of the year to put the Sens up 2-0. Then, Tage Thompson got his 10th of the year to put the Sabres on the board. In the second, Dominik Kubalik notched his eighth of the year to put Ottawa back up a pair and then Mark Kastelic scored his first of the year to give Ottawa the 4-1 lead. In the third, Artem Zub scored an empty net goal as the Senators got the 5-1 win over the Sabres.

    Edmonton Oilers v. Anaheim Ducks – 8p ET

    • In Anaheim, the Ducks hosted the Oilers for the first time on the season and in the first, Edmonton took the 1-0 lead when Ryan McLeod scored his seventh of the year but then Anaheim tied it up when Max Jones scored his fourth of the year. Then, Evander Kane scored his 14th of the year to put Edmonton back in the lead. In the second, Leon Draisaitl notched his 17th of the year to give the Oilers the two goal lead and then Warren Foegele scored a pair as Edmonton took the 5-1 lead. In the third, Frank Vatrano netted his 17th of the year to bring the Ducks within three but Zach Hyman scored his 21st of the year to put Edmonton back up four. Brett Kulak the scored his second of the year as the Oilers flew by the Ducks for the 7-2 win.

    Philadelphia Flyers v. Calgary Flames – 8p ET

    • In the Saddledome, the Flames welcomed the Flyers back to Calgary and in the first, Philadelphia took the 1-0 lead when Rasmus Ristolainen scored his first of the year. In the second, Calgary got on the board when Mikael Backlund scored his eighth of the year. In the third, Dennis Gilbert scored his first of the season to put Calgary in the lead and then Nazem Kadri’s 10th of the year put the Flames up two. Then, Bobby Brink scored his seventh of the year to bring Philadelphia within a goal but Blake Coleman’s 13th of the year gave Calgary the two lead once more. Then, Philadelphia’s Egor Zamula scored his third of the year but the Flames held on to get the 4-3 win over the Flyers.

    • In Colorado, the Avalanche welcomed the Sharks back to the Mile High City and in the first, the Avs took the 1-0 lead when Mikko Rantanen scored his 19th goal of the year on the power play. In the second, Tomas Hertl responded with a power play goal of his own to get the Sharks on the board. In the third, Valeri Nichushkin scored his 17th of the year to put Colorado back in the lead and then Josh Manson scored the game winner as the Avalanche got the 3-1 win over the Sharks.

    • In Winnipeg for an afternoon matinee the Jets would play host to the Minnesota Wild, and in the first period Alex Iafallo and Nino Niederreiter would score to give the Jets the 2-0 lead. In the second period Neiderreiter would net his second of the game to give the Jets the three goal lead, but Ryan Hartman would score to get the Wild on the board. Then in the third period Matt Boldy would score to get the Wild back within one, but Axel Jonsson-Fjallby would score to give the Jets the 4-2 victory over the Wild.

    Columbus Blue Jackets v. Buffalo Sabres – 5p ET

    • In Buffalo the Sabres would take on the Columbus Blue Jackets, and in the first period Damon Severson would score to give the Jackets the 1-0 lead. In the second period Luke Hughes would score to grow the Devils lead to two, but a pair of goals from David Pastrnak and goals from Jake DeBrusk and Kevin Shattenkirk would score to give the B’s the 4-2 lead. Then in the third period Shattenkirk would score his second of the game to give the Bruins the 5-2 victory over the Devils.

    • In Florida the Panthers would play host to the Montreal Canadiens, and after a scoreless first period both teams would trade goals as Eetu Luostarinen would strike for the Panthers while Cole Caufield would strike for the Habs for the 1-1 tie. Then in the third period Luostarinen would net his second of the game while Sam Bennett and Carter Verhaeghe would score to give the Panthers the 401 victory over the Canadiens.

    St. Louis Blues v. Pittsburgh Penguins – 7p ET

    • In Pittsburgh the Penguins would battle the St. Louis Blues, and in the first period Drew O’Connor would score to give the Pens the 1-0 lead. In the second period Robert Thomas would score for the Blues to tie the game at one, but Evgeni Malkin would score to retake the lead for the Pens.     • In DC the Washington Capitals would battle the Nashville Predators, and in the first period Luke Evangelista and Roman Josi would score for the Preds to take the 2-0 lead, but Beck Malenstyn would score fort he Caps to get back within one. In the second period Alex Ovechkin would net career NHL goal 829 to tie the game at two for the Caps. Then in the third period Ovechkin would be denied his second goal of the game off of a questionable goaltender interference call as this game would go to overtime tied at two. After a scoreless extra five minutes of hockey Ryan O’Reilly would net the shootout winner to give the Predators the 3-2 victory over the Capitals.

    • In Columbus we would have a barn burner as the Blue Jackets would take on the Toronto Maple Leafs, and in the first period Cole Sillinger would score for the Jackets, but goals from Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews would give the Leafs the 2-1 lead. Then in the third period both teams would get three goals each as Brendan Gaunce, Dmitri Voronkov, and Kent Johnson would score for the Jackets, and Nick Roberston, William Nylander, and John Tavares would score for the Leafs to keep their one goal lead. In the third period Adam Fantilli would score his tenth of the season to tie the game at five for the Jackets to force overtime. Then in the extra frame Johnny Gaudreau would score to give the Blue Jackets the 6-5 overtime victory over the Maple Leafs.

    Nashville Predators v. Detroit Red Wings – 7p ET

    • In Detroit we’d have another high scoring affair as the Red Wings would take on the Nashville Predators, and in the first period Filip Forsberg would score for the Preds, but goals from Dylan Larkin and Jake Walman would give the Wings the 2-1 lead. In the second period Gustav Nyquist would score and Forsberg would net his second of the game to give the Preds the 3-2 lead. Then in the third period Alex DeBrincat would score and Walman would record his second of the game for the Wings, but Nyquist’s second of the game would tie the game at 4 and send the game to overtime for the Preds. In the extra frame Lucas Raymond would score to give the Red Wings the 5-4 overtime victory over the Predators.

    New York Rangers v. Florida Panthers – 7p ET

    • Down in Florida we’d have our third one goal game as the Panthers hosted the New York Rangers, and in the first period Evan Rodrigues would score for the Panthers to take the 1-0 lead. In the second period Artemi Panarin and Will Cuylle would score for the Rangers, but a pair of goals from Sam Reinhart would give keep the Panthers ahead by one. Then in the third period Mika Zibanejad would score to tie the game at three, but Carter Verhaeghe would score to give the Panthers the 4-3 victory over the Rangers.

    New Jersey Devils v. Ottawa Senators – 7p ET

    • In Ottawa the Senators would take on the New Jersey Devils, and in the first period Drake Batherson would score for the Sens, but goals from Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt would give the Devils the 2-1 lead. In the second period Dawson Mercer and Tyler Toffoli would score to grow the Devils lead to three. Then in the third period Jacob Bernard-Docker would score for the Sens, but goals from Brendan Smith and Luke Hughes would give the Devils the 6-2 victory over the Senators.

    Washington Capitals v. New York Islanders – 730p ET

    • On Long Island the Washington Capitals woes would continue as they visit the New York Islanders, and after a scoreless first period Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Noah Dobson would score to give the Isles the 2-0 lead. Then in the third period Nicolas Aube-Kubel would get a fluky goal for the Caps, but Julien Gauthier would net a pair of goals 18 seconds apart and Pageau would net his second of the game to give the Islanders the 5-1 victory over the Capitals.

    Chicago Blackhawks v. Dallas Stars – 8p ET

    • In Dallas the Stars would faceoff with the Chicago Blackhawks, and in the first period Tyler Johnson and Cole Guttman would score to give the Blackhawks the 2-0 lead, but Roope Hintz would score to get the Stars back within one. In the second period Joe Pavelski would score and Hintz would net his second of the game to give the Stars the 3-2 lead. Then in the third period Jamie Benn would score to grow the Stars lead to two, but goals from Jason Dickinson and Johnson would tie the game at four for the Blackhawks to force overtime. In the extra frame Hintz would complete the hat trick to give the Stars the 5-4 victory over the Blackhawks.

    Colorado Avalanche v. St. Louis Blues – 8p ET

    • In St. Louis the Blues would battle the Colorado Avalanche, and in the first period Ryan Johansen would open the scoring for the Avs, but Robert Thomas would score to tie the game at one for the Blues. Then after a scoreless second period Devon Toews would score to give the Avalanche the 2-1 victory over the Blues.

    Montreal Canadiens v. Carolina Hurricanes – 7p ET

    • In Raleigh, the Hurricanes looked to bring a storm surge to the Canadiens and in the first, Carolina took the 1-0 lead when Andrei Svechnikov scored his fourth of the year and then the Canes took the 2-0 lead with Jesper Fast’s third of the year. Then, Mitchell Stephens got his second of the year to put the Habs on the board and then Mike Matheson’s sixth of the year, on the Montreal power play, made this an even game. In the second, Jesper Fast got his second of the night to giv Carolina the lead back. In the third, Josh Anderson’s sixth of the year evened the score once more for Montreal but then a pair of goals from Andrei Svechnikov not only completed the hat trick but it also gave the Hurricanes the 5-3 win over the Canadiens.

In the second period Justin Danforth would score for the Jackets to take the 2-1 lead.
