    2024-25 Preview

After missing the playoffs last year to injuries, inconsistent plays, and a lack of a capable starting goaltending tandem…the New Jersey Devils looks to make it back to the Stanley Cup playoffs with hopes of being a championship contender as they were 2022-23 season. GM Tom Fitzgerald sure was busy and active this offseason correcting a lot of the issues that plagued the Devils last season. Let’s take a quick look back at the off-season moves and what the current roster entails.

    Off-season Moves

The biggest moved that kicked off the busy offseason (actually during the Stanley Cup playoffs) was acquiring goalie Jacob Markstrom from the Calgary Flames. It’s no secret this move was going to happen as the Devils tried acquiring him at the trade deadline but couldn’t get the deal past the finish line until after the regular season. Markstrom will definitely be the number one guy in between the pipes with Jake Allen as his serviceable and capable backup.

On day one of free agency, the Devils went out and signed Brett Pesce away from the Carolina Hurricanes as well as Brendan Dillon of the Winnipeg Jets. These moves help on the backend as Pesce is an upgrade on Marino. While Dillon brings back that rugged and physical defenseman they lacked once Ryan Graves departed for the Pittsburgh Penguins. New Jersey also added familiar faces in Stefan Noesen and Tomas Tatar in free agency, while the Devils also acquired in a trade from the Vegas Golden Knights Paul Cotter for the middle and bottom six forwards group. They should add an edge, scoring depth, and tough to play against mentality for their line(s).

    Returning Players

The Devils return with a solid and highly skilled core group of offensive players that features Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt, Dougie Hamilton, & Dawson Mercer. Hamilton was sorely missed as he was injured most of the year with a torn pectoral muscle. Him coming back healthy will be huge as he plays critical minutes on the top pair at 5on5, power play, & on the penalty kill. You could tell New Jersey’s PowerPlay took a dip without him firing pucks from the blue line. Health overall was a problem besides just Hamilton. Jack Hughes definitely missed some chunks of games as well. When healthy, these young skilled Devils can stack up against the NHL’s elite teams.

I look forward to continue to see growth in Jesper Brett’s game as he’s improved each year since he’s been in the league. He was definitely the MVP of the Devils last year for sure leading the team in scoring. As for the rest of the group, I’d like to see more from the following…Timo Meier & Ondrej Palat. Meier in particular needs to step up his game and produce like how he did in San Jose being a 40 goal scorer considering he’s being paid a kings ransom to score goals. More goals from Meier, the better for him and everyone. While I do value Ondrej Palat’s leadership and experience of winning when he was in Tampa, I’d like to see him chip in a little bit more offensively. The bottom six looks good

  • Pesce, Noesen, Dillion Make Deals With the Devils

Pesce, Noesen, Dillion Make Deals With the Devils

Happy July 1st and the opening of NHL Free Agency! It didn’t take long for the New Jersey Devils to pounce as they brought in three new key pieces to the lineup. First, it started with the signing of former Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Brett Pesce to a six year thirty-three million dollar deal with an annual average value of 5.5 million. Then, New Jersey signed big bodied and physical defenseman Brenden Dillon formerly of the Winnipeg Jets to a three year twelve million dollar deal with an annual average value of four million. Finally, the Devils reunited with a familiar face in Stefan Noesen (once a Devil and now former Carolina Hurricane) to a three year deal worth $8,250,000 and with an annual average value of $2,750,000 per season. Below are the announcements of the deals from the New Jersey Devils and my reaction to them:

    Brett Pesce

    Stefan Noesen

    Brenden Dillon

    Scott’s Take

I’m loving the moves GM Tom Fitzgerald is making so far this offseason. He’s actually taking steps to correct areas the Devils were having issues with last year which were goaltending and on defense. Obviously I loved getting Jacob Markstrom in net but, Pesce & Dillon will definitely make his job much much easier. Brett Pesce is a defensively and positional sound defenseman who is an upgrade over John Marino who was dealt away to the Utah hockey club at the draft. Braden Dillon is a tough, rugged, & physical defender that the Devils have been lacking since former Devil Ryan Graves left for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Getting Stefan Noesen back is the cherry on top of an already delicious sundae today. He will provide depth and can chip in here and there on the goal scoring sheet with a timely goal. I do think GM Fitzgerald has one more card left up his sleeve to play as he looks to add another forward to the top six group. Does that mean recent Stanley Cup champion and free agent Vladimir Tarasenko could be an option? He certainly could be. We’ll have to wait and see what’s next. For now, the New Jersey Devils are an already well improved squad that should get back to the Stanley Cup playoffs. Till the next cards get played, we’ll have to wait and see what happens.

  • Devils Make Their “Mark”strom

    Devils Make Their “Mark”strom

In the midst of the Stanley Cup final still going on, we have a pre-offseason splash of a trade that went down today between the New Jersey Devils and Calgary Flames. Jacob Markstrom is on his way to the Garden State to become the Devils number one goalie in between the pipes after agreeing to to waive his no trade clause. This is a previously rumored trade that has been in discussion between the two teams heading up to the trade deadline that didn’t come into fruition until today.

The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT

New Jersey is sending defenseman Kevin Bahl and a 2025 first round draft pick that is top ten lottery protected in exchange for Markstrom. The Calgary Flames are also retaining slightly over thirty percent of Markstrom’s salary in this trade as well. Below is an announcement from the Devils with details of the trade and my reaction to Markstrom becoming a Devil:

    NJ Devils trade announcement

    Scott’s take

This was a trade the New Jersey Devils had to and wanted to make going back to the trade deadline. Goaltending besides health was a HUGE problem for the team. Vitek Vanecek (who was eventually traded to San Jose) & Akira Schmid last season in particular demonstrated they were not the answer in goal for the team going forward. Getting Markstrom to pair with Jake Allen who was acquired at the deadline turns what once was a weakness now into a strength. There’s no doubt about who the number one goalie is anymore as we’ve all seen what Jacob Markstrom can do in net and is a former Vezina trophy finalist. Allen is a great backup with plenty of experience and has won a Stanley Cup previously with the St. Louis Blues. I’m looking forward to seeing a more stabilized & well performing goalie tandem in New Jersey.

As for what the Devils are giving up, they are losing Kevin Bahl who’s starting to figure out what it takes to be a reliable and dependable NHL defenseman. Bahl can be a tough, mean, and nasty defender to play against who has great size to use to his advantage. On the other hand, the Devils have plenty of upcoming defense prospects who are ready to play with plenty of talent. As they say, you have to give something to get something.

Now to the draft pick. The fact New Jersey was able to hold onto this years number ten overall pick and lottery protect next years first rounder are great signs. I anticipate the Devils using this years pick to either acquire a top six forward or top four defenseman. This gives them the flexibility to go out and make a big move to help improve the team and get them back into the playoffs. By protecting next year‘s pick, it definitely helps because next year’s draft is supposed to be really deep with a very good prospect pool. Overall, this trade is a win win for the New Jersey Devils. Stay tuned as the offseason heat will get turned up soon after the Stanley Cup has been awarded.

  • Devils Make a Needed Change

    Devils Make a Needed Change

Today the New Jersey Devils announced they have dismissed head coach Lindy Ruff after three seasons being in charge behind the bench. Ruff departs with a 128-125-28 record in 281 regular season games and 5-7 record in the postseason when the Devils made the playoffs last season. Lindy Ruff was given a contract extension prior to the start of the season however, the Devils were never able to live up to and follow up on their postseason success from last year. Travis Green who was an assistant under Ruff, and former head coach of the Vancouver Canucks, will take over the head coaching duties tomorrow at the team’s morning skate.

The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT

Here is the announcement from the New Jersey Devils and President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Tom Fitzgerald, and my reaction to the firing of Lindy Ruff as well below:

My reaction to Lindy Ruff firing:

To be honest, I was not surprised that Lindy Ruff was let go. The only thing that did surprise me was that I thought if the Devils missed the playoffs that they would let him go after the season. Something is really off with the team this year. There have been some injuries which they’re always will be, and a lot of inconsistent play from up and down the lineup. Losing Dougie Hamilton in particular was a huge loss. Goaltending has also been a big issue with the Devils if not the biggest issue they’ve had all season with Vitek Vanecek, Akira Schmid, and Nico Daws being unable to show they can be a number one goalie at the NHL level. I also think the losses of Damon Severson and Ryan Graves prove to be much bigger losses as well. Another loss that I don’t think is being talked about enough is losing Andrew Brunette from the coaching staff who ran the devils Power Play last year, which was absolutely lethal and dangerous.

Going back to Lindy Ruff, he is a great coach, and from everything I’ve heard is really well liked by the players. However, like some of the coaches of the past, I think the game has also passed him by too. There just wasn’t enough adjustments or the ability to get guys going and play with much more consistency, especially a guy like Timo Meier who’s getting paid a lot of money, and is not scoring near a 40 goal pace as he usually does. A change was inevitable after high expectations that were failed to be met. Lindy may get another chance at a head coaching job, but I think he might be better served as an assistant coach going forward.

As for Travis Green, let’s see how he handles things the rest of the season. I think this will just be an interim basis, type of deal, and a new head coach will be brought in during the off-season. Green could prove he deserves to stay on as the Devils coach. Time will tell on that front. On the other hand, If the Devils do go out and acquire a legitimate starting caliber goaltender, maybe that can help right the ship as well as players playing up to their capabilities. That right there I will say is not Lindy’s fault, GM Tom Fitzgerald deserves blame here and has yet to pull the trigger on making a deal to upgrade the goaltending problem. It should be an interesting rest of the way for the New Jersey Devils, stay tuned!

  • Looking at the Stadium Series Jerseys

Looking at the Stadium Series Jerseys

At long last the NHL and Adidas have finally released the Stadium Series jerseys for the Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils, New York Rangers, and New York Islanders. Today we’ll be looking at the Stadium Series jerseys, and ranking the jerseys.

    4. New York Islanders

Starting in last place we have the New York Islanders who also are the recipients to the “At least You Tried” Award. This has Lou Lamoriello’s fingerprints all over it as it’s very bland and boring. Just like the hockey teams he builds.

The Isles are going with a navy jersey with a massive orange stripe across the center with “ISLES” in navy in the middle of the jersey. The jersey also has a large orange stripe on the sleeves that’ll feature the jersey numbers in navy, and a small orange trim on the bottom of the jersey and sleeves and on the collar. On the back of the jerseys the players names will be in orange, and the numbers will be navy with orange trim. It should be noted that the orange trim is a brighter orange than the one being used on the jersey itself.

The Islanders logo is on the left shoulder while the Stadium series patch is on the right shoulder. Overall, this jersey is near the bottom of the barrel along with their Reverse Retro jerseys which they either didn’t try (RR1.0), or bastardized something that could have been great (RR2.0).

    3. New Jersey Devils

Ok, so I’m going to get some hate for this, but the New Jersey Devils come in third for me. I understand what they are going for, but I’m just not feeling it. They essentially took their current home jersey, removed all of the white, and enlarged the logo and numbers for the Stadium Series atmosphere. Also, having the names and numbers in all black is a choice to say the least. I wouldn’t be surprised if they passed the TV test, but I could see them being a little problematic to see live at MetLife Stadium. However, I could be wrong, and I’ll know soon enough when I am at the Devils/Flyers game on Feb. 17th.

Overall, I think the colors are fine, I’d just change a few things personally to make it more aesthetically appealing. And who knows, maybe these jerseys will grow on me when I see them in action next month.

    2. New York Rangers

Coming in at number two we have the New York Rangers. Honestly, I’m a little surprised myself that I have the Rangers ranked as high as I do. I really thought they would have been lower, but after looking at the jersey more this one grew on me rather quickly, like a Jacob Trouba elbow to the head.

The Rangers, being the road team for the sixth time now for an outdoor game, is rocking white jerseys with red and blue large stripes on the sleeves with smaller white stripes for spacing. The bottom of the jersey has blue base. The player names are also in blue, but the thing that really stands out to me the most is the “NYR” and the numbers. The red with blue borders makes this jersey really stand out to me, and in a really positive way. The Rangers doing the “NYR” like they have their team name on their home and roads doesn’t bother me as much as it’s very on brand, but they did a really great job of making them stand out. Overall, I could see me getting this jersey for my collection (and I do need a Rangers jersey for my collection).

    1. Philadelphia Flyers

Coming at the number one spot is the Philadelphia Flyers. For a team that has already gone a rebrand of the summer I was kind of worried what they would do for the Stadiums Series, but I’m actually really impressed with the Flyers did here.

Rocking a white jersey, the Flyers jersey has an orange stripe on the bottom with white trim underneath, but what really makes this jersey stand out to me is the how the sleeves contribute to the back of the jersey. The sleeves which have a large orange stripe on the middle of the sleeve with a smaller black stripe above. The black stripe, however, stretches from sleeve to sleeve across the back, and on the black stripe on the back is where the players names go. I think that’s really cool and creative. The players numbers are in orange with no borders to them just like with their new home and road jerseys, but instead of having the numbers on the sleeves, they are on the shoulders, which is a nice touch to really differentiate themselves from the other jerseys. Overall, I love these jerseys, and I would definitely buy one for the collection.

    Noteworthy Mention

While it’s not a Stadium Series jersey, on Thursday night the San Jose Sharks unveiled their new alternate jerseys.

Nicknamed the “Cali Fin” or the “Evolve” jersey, the Sharks introduced their newest alternate jersey a little over a year after going through a rebrand themselves. Going back to black for their base the Sharks used their secondary “Cali Fin” logo as their primary, and on the shoulders they reintroduced the Northern California Shark-fin in a re-imagined design for which they revised from their 2015 Stadium Series jersey. It has the same setup as the current home and road jerseys, but with additional teal striping to help bring more life to the jersey, which I feel it succeeds at doing. Hands down this jersey is a thousand times better than that awful Stealth jersey they used to wear.

New Jersey took a big step last season and have asserted themselves into the conversation of being Stanley Cup contenders. The only thing that stands in their way is the Carolina Hurricanes who defeated them in round two after beating Hudson River rivals the NY Rangers in round one. This team showed they are a young force to be reckoned for years to come with with a young core that features Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt. That doesn’t even include the young Hughes brother in Luke who looks to play a big role on the back end this season after making his playoff debut and showed he belongs in this league. What’s even more scary, is there’s even more young talent to come to the Garden State on defense such as Simon Nemec. Despite losing Damond Severson and Ryan Graves on the back end, these two young kids have the talent and potential to fill those roles.

The Devils did go out and add a very nice piece to the top six by acquiring Tyler Tofoli from the Calgary Flames who will look really nice to either Jack Hughes or Nico Hischier. Re-signing trade deadline acquisition Timo Meier as well as RFA Jesper Bratt were huge moves that the Devils had to make. Meier once he got going in Jersey was a lot for opposing defenses to handle. Bratt showed last season that’s very capable of producing and putting up points for years to come and is a valuable asset in the top six. The Devils are one of the upperclassmen of the Metropolitan division but face stiff competition with the favorites in the Carolina Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins who went out and acquired 100 point Norris Trophy wining defenseman Erik Karlsson to their mix. I see the Devils returning to the playoffs in one of the top three spots in the division. If New Jersey wants to go further, their defense and goaltending has to play at a higher and more elite level for them to get all the way to the top of the mountain. They certainly are capable, they just have to go out and do it now,

Canes Drop Devils in OT to Advance

New Jersey Devils @ Carolina Hurricanes

    (CAR wins series 4-1)

    Game Recap:

Following a crushing 6-1 loss and being forced to the brink of elimination, the New Jersey Devils look to fight another day as they take on the Carolina Hurricanes in enemy territory in game five. It was a pretty even first period with both teams trading some chances. However, it would be the Devils who would breakthrough at the 15:06 mark with a Dawson Mercer goal and get on the board first. Mercer would deflect the puck in on a long cross ice pass to give New Jersey the 1-0 lead and take the lead into the intermission.

Jacob Slavin got the Hurricanes on the scoreboard early in the early seconds of period two as he would wrist a shot from the point that way find it’s way to get by goalie Akira Schmid to tie the score up at one. Fast forward about seven minutes give or take, Timo Meier would pot one in on the power play off of a rebound from a Dougie Hamilton shot to give the Devils a 2-1 lead. Carolina did get the equalize from Brent Burns late in the period as he whipped a shot through traffic and in to tie the score up 2-2. We would take that score into the third period.

Period three was a very eventful one with both the Devils and Hurricanes trading multiple chances. Each team came super close but both Akira Schmid & Frederik Andersen kept their respective teams in this game and the puck out of the net. This game would now move onto overtime with the Devils hoping to stay alive, while the Hurricanes look to move onto the Eastern Conference Final.

In overtime, Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler would send a puck over the glass for a delay of game penalty to put the Carolina Hurricanes on the power play. The Canes would certainly take advantage as Jesper Fast would tip in a shot from Jesperi Kotkaniemi for the overtime game winner to help Carolina advance to the conference final. The Hurricanes now await the winner of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers matchup.

Canes Decimate the Devils in Game 4

Carolina Hurricanes @ New Jersey Devils

    (CAR leads series 3-1)

    Game Recap:

After a wild victory the other night, the New Jersey Devils looks to even up the series against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Devils did get off to a good fast start thanks to a Jack Hughes goal that he redirected off of a Timo Meier shot to give their team a 1-0 lead. It would remain that way for a while until late in the period Martin Necas tied things up scoring on a 2 on 1 that was created off of a turnover in the neutral zone. After the first period the score would be tied 1-1.

Things started to unravel for New Jersey in the second period as the Hurricanes scored five times to really put themselves out in front as they got goals from Martin Necas (second of the game), Brett Pesce, Jesper Fast, Brent Burns, & the especially red hot Jordan Martinook. The explosion of offense would put Carolina up 6-1 after two periods.

Period three saw the Hurricanes shut down the Devils the rest of the way and not giving them much opportunity at all to get back in this one and would warn the victory by a final score of 6-1. The Devils backs are against the wall not facing elimination against the Hurricanes in game five on Thursday night down in Ralieigh.

Devils Blow Past Canes in Wild Game 3 Victory

Carolina Hurricanes @ New Jersey Devils

    (CAR leads series 2-1)

    Game Recap:

To say this afternoon‘s game between the New Jersey Devils and Carolina Hurricanes was interesting would be an understatement. This game was wild on the scoresheet all around. It features power play goals, short handed goals, a penalty shot goal, and several multi point players in this thrilling game three matchup. New Jersey dictated the play in period one as they would get off to a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Timo Meier, a Shorthanded goal from Michael McLeod on a nice individual effort, and Jack Hughes on a top shelf shot off of a give and go. It would be Devils up by three after the first period.

Nico Hischier would end Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen’s night with an early second period goal just fifty three seconds in. Pyotr Kochetkov would enter the game hoping to clean up the mess but unfortunately to no avail. Sebastian Aho respond about a minute later to get his team on the board before Damon Severson extended the Devils lead to 5-1 at the 5:33 mark. Carolina did get one more goal before the period was up as Jordan Martinook was awarded a penalty shot while his team was Shorthanded on the PK and converted to get the score to 5-2 and it would remain that way the rest of the period.

If you thought the scoring was over, you were clearly wrong. Miles Wood would score at the 3:08 mark receiving a beautiful stretch pass from the goal line in the breakout where he took the puck in on a beautiful effort by him and slid the puck five hole for the Devils sixth goal of the game. Moments later we saw Jack Hughes roof one that barely got over the goalie to increase the lead to seven. Game still not crazy enough yet? Then we saw two consecutive shorthanded goals by Carolina as Jordan Stall and Seth Jarvis would score to get the game within three. Finally the scoring ended as Ondrej Palat would pot one in on the power play with a one timer set up by Jesper Bratt. The New Jersey Devils went on to beat the Carolina Hurricanes in a wild one by a final score of 8-4 as we now turn the page to game four on Tuesday night at the Prudential Center.

    (CAR leads series 1-0)

    Game Recap:

Tonight begins round two of the Stanley Cup playoffs and this matchup features first of a best of seven between the visiting New Jersey Devils and hosting Carolina Hurricanes. The Devils are coming off a shutout victory in game seven against the New York Rangers while the Hurricanes vanquished the New York Islanders in six games. New Jersey is without the services of prized acquisition Timo Meier after suffering an injury due to a Jacob Trouba hit the previous game. Unfortunately for the Devils, this was a game they want to turn the page and do better next game. Carolina got off to a great start by scoring twice in the first period thanks to goals from Brett Pesce and Seth Jarvis to make it 2-0 in favor of the Hurricanes heading into the second period.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi kept the momentum going as he scored early on at the 1:55 mark of period two putting the puck in at the side of the net for his first goal of the playoffs. Moments later, the Devils got on the board thanks to a Nathan Bastian breakaway goal to get his team within two. That would be the only goal New Jersey would get the rest of the way.

Carolina added two more goals from Brady Skjei and an empty netter from Jesper Fast to seal the victory by a final score of 5-1. The Hurricanes did to the Devils what they normal do to other teams which is use their high attack speed and used it against them. Both teams are back in action for game two on Friday night in Raleigh.
