    There were nine contests in action last night…

     

    NEW JERSEY 4, Pittsburgh 2

    New Jersey’s Taylor Hall recorded his eighth career four-point performance in the Devils 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

     

    NY ISLANDERS 5, Vancouver 2

     

    Mathew Barzal of the NY Islanders would register his 100th career point in his 101st game, becoming the sixth player to reach the 100 point mark among active NHL players.

     

     

    The Islanders would go on to rout the Vancouver Canucks 5-2

     

    Florida 2, PHILADELPHIA 1

    Florida’s Mike Hoffman would score to extend his point-scoring streak to an NHL-high 13 games on the season in the Florida Panthers one-goal win over the Philadelphia Flyers last night.

    Also in this contest, Panthers G Roberto Luongo became the fourth goaltender in League history to win four contests to be at the age of 39 or older.

    BUFFALO 2, Tampa Bay 1

    Buffalo has now won three in a row and seven out of their last 11 in the big win over the Tampa Bay Lightning 2-1 in Buffalo last night.

     

    DETROIT 6, Arizona 1

     

    Before the contest, the Detroit Red Wings held their pre-game skate in the Hockey Fights Cancer practice jerseys.

    Washington 5, MINNESOTA 2

    Tom Wilson would return to action, by registering his first goal of the season, and helped the defending champions take down the Minnesota Wild with a 5-2 win.

    EDMONTON 6, Montreal 2

    Edmonton’s Connor McDavid would have his 31st three-point contest, all assists, in Edmonton’s big win over the Canadiens.  Evgeny Malkin and Patrick Kane are the two players behind McDavid with 28 and 27, respectively.  This mark dates back to the 2015-16 NHL season.

    Despite Montreal Canadiens Max Domi registering a goal in the first six minutes in the contest to tie the game 1-1, it would not be enough as the Edmonton Oilers would go on to defeat Montreal 6-2.

    Domi’s goal would be his 10th of the season and the most of his career since the 2015-16 season.

     

    Toronto 5, LOS ANGELES 1

    The Toronto Maple Leafs began their West Coast trip with a big win over the Los Angeles Kings 5-1.

    SAN JOSE 5, Nashville 4

    San Jose Sharks Erik Karlsson would become the fifth player to record 400 career assists and achieved this mark in 646 games with the Sharks defeating the Nashville Predators 5-4.

    Joe Thornton of the Sharks would reach the 400 career goal mark and became the 11th player to have at least 400 goals and 1,000 assists in their careers.

    Today is Sunday, November 11th, 2018, and these are your news and notes.

    BUFFALO 4, Vancouver 3 (SO)

     

    The Buffalo Sabres overcame a multi-goal deficit in the last five minutes and would win the contest for the seventh time in franchise history and the first since March of 2010 in a 3-2 win in a shootout over the Montreal Canadiens.

     

    PHILADELPHIA 4, Chicago 0

    Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux became the ninth player to reach the 50 game mark while registering three points in a contest.

     

    Nashville 5, DALLAS 4 (OT)

     

    Mattais Ekholm netted the game-winner in the extra frame to give the Nashville Predators the 5-4 win over the Dallas Stars.

     

    Nashville is 8-0-0 on the road this season.  They are the third team in League history to win at least eight of their first road games to start the season.

     

    BOSTON 5, Toronto 1

    Boston Bruins David Pastrnak registered a hat trick for the second time this season against the Toronto Maple Leafs and joins six others for the same mark between the regular-season and the playoffs.

    Between three lead changes in this contest, the Montreal Canadiens would go on to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 5-4.  Tomas Tatar would net the game winner against his former club.

    Prior to the contest, the Montreal Canadiens honoured Max Pacioretty with a video tribute.

     

    Ottawa 6, TAMPA BAY 4

    Ottawa Senators Bobby Ryan has a three point performance, one goal and two assists, to lift the Senators over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

     

    FLORIDA 4, NY Islanders 2

     

    Florida Panthers Mike Hoffman extended his point-scoring streak to 11 games with a goal in the second period to help the Florida Panthers defeat the New York Islanders 4-2.

     

    PITTSBURGH 4, Arizona 0

     

    Pittsburgh Penguins G Casey DeSmith would net the shutout against the Arizona Coyotes with a 39 save performance and help the Penguins snap a five game slide.

     

    Detroit 4, CAROLINA 3 (SO)

     

    Detroit Red Wings G Johnathan Bernier made 45 saves and helped lift the Detroit Red Wings over the Carolina Hurricanes in a 4-3 shootout win.


    The Red Wings would also overcome a multi-goal deficit to win three consecutive games for the first time in the decorated franchise history of the Detroit Red Wings.

     

    NY Rangers 5, COLUMBUS 4 (SO)

     

    The New York Rangers have extended their point-streak in the standings to 6 games.

     

     

    Jimmy Vessey would net the winner in the shootout frame for the Rangers.

     

     

    Calgary 1, LOS ANGELES 0

     

    In the lone goal of the contest, Calgary’s Travis Hamonic would score his second goal of the season in the first three minutes of the contest.

    -The Florida Panthers honoured original team President, Mr. Torrey, last night with a video.  Mr. Torrey passed away back in May at the age of 83.

    -The Dallas Stars honoured Jason Spezza who played in his 1,000th NHL game.

    -The Montreal Canadiens held their annual Military Tribute night by wearing camouflage practice jerseys before their contest against the Vegas Golden Knights last night.

    In action yesterday, there were nine contests…

     

    Vancouver 8, BOSTON 5

     

    Vancouver had eight goals in a contest for the first time in nearly a decade in the win over Boston at TD Garden last night.

     

    FLORIDA 4, Edmonton 1

     

    Florida’s Mike Hoffman extended his point scoring streak to 10 games when he registered two assists in the Panthers 4-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

     

     

    PHILADELPHIA 5, Arizona 4 (OT)

    Despite the Philadelphia Flyers win in overtime over the Arizona Coyotes, Arizona is the second team to have nine shorthanded goals in 14 games since 1933-34.

     

    They share the record with the 1975-76 St. Louis Blues franchise.

     

    Buffalo 6, MONTREAL 5 (OT)

     

    The Buffalo Sabres would win on an overtime goal by Rasmus Ristolainen, the fourth in franchise history in regular-season play by a defenceman.

     

    Vegas 5, OTTAWA 3

     

    Vegas’ fourth line would power the team through a hard-fought win over the Ottawa Senators and earn the season-sweep.

     

    TAMPA BAY 4, NY Islanders 2

     

    The Tampa Bay Lightning for the second straight season have 25 points through 16 games or less with the win over the Islanders last night.

     

     

    Carolina 4, CHICAGO 3

     

    Despite being down by four, Chicago’s comeback in the contest fell short when they were defeated by Carolina in the debut for Chicago’s new bench boss, Jeremy Colliton.

     

     

    DALLAS 4, San Jose 3

     

    San Jose’s Brent Burns became the fourth member in team history to record at least 20 points in 16 or fewer team games last night.

     

    Joe Thornton would, in fact, play in his 1500th NHL game, the most ever for a number one overall pick in League history.

     

    Minnesota 3, LOS ANGELES 1

     

    -Minnesota’s Zach Parise registered his 700th career point and leads all active U.S. born players with 339 goals.

    In NHL news,

     

    -The Washington Capitals will host their annual Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness night.

     

     

    -Yesterday, the Boston Bruins and Chicago Blackhawks unveiled the jerseys that they will wear for the 2019 NHL Winter Classic.

    -With the 2018 Hockey Hall of Fame induction happening Monday night, the new inductees received the rings as a part of festivities.

     

     

    Tonight, the Toronto Maple Leafs host the New Jersey Devils in the annual Hockey Hall of Fame Game at Scotiabank Arena.

    There will be more on the Hall of Fame induction ceremony Tuesday.

     

    -The Chicago Blackhawks and 2018 first round pick, defenceman Nicolas Beaudin, agreed to a three-year, entry level deal.

    Beaudin will remain with the QMJHL’s Drummondville Voltiguers.

     

    -Vegas Golden Knights D Nate Schmidt, who is still suspended for a violation of the League’s Substance Abuse Policy, participated in practice earlier today.

    Also with the Golden Knights, the team today announced that they will hold their Military Appreciation night on November 14th.

     

    -John Carlson of the Washington Capitals will miss tonight’s contest.  In a corresponding move, the Washington Capitals recalled Jonas Siegenthaler from the American Hockey League’s Hershey Bears.

    -The Montreal Canadiens announced earlier today that Tomas Plekanec has been placed on unconditional waivers for the purposes of buying out his contract.

    Today is Wednesday, November 7th, and these are your news and notes…

    There were nine league contests last night.

     

    The Maple Leafs won their 10th game of the season out of 15 games for the 11th time in franchise history and the first since the 2013-14 season when they won 10 games out of the first 14.

     

     

    Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist won his 436th career game and is now one win shy of tying Jacques Plante for seventh place all time.

     

     

    Max Domi would score all three of Montreal’s goals in the contest to give him a goal-scoring streak of four contests and has 16 points on the season, including nine goals thus far.

    The Columbus Blue Jackets have defeated the Dallas Stars for the sixth consecutive time.

     

     

    Ottawa’s Mark Stone had a five-point game to lift Ottawa to the win over New Jersey. Stone is the fifth player in Senators’ history to have multiple five point games in the regular season.

     

     

    Vancouver’s Elias Pettersson would score yet again and continues to lead all rookies in goals and points but would still fall to the Detroit Red Wings in a shootout.

     

    Pettersson has scored 10 goals in 10 games played. He is the fifth player outside of the League’s first season to score 10+ goals through their first 10 NHL games.

     

     

    In Tampa Bay’s Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness night, Tampa Bay would get the win in the contest over the Edmonton Oilers and move to a record of 11-3-1 and into first place in the NHL standings.

     

     

    St. Louis F Ryan O’Reilly registered a hat-trick and would extend his point streak to eight games in the contest against the Hurricanes. O’Reilly also had an eight-game point streak during the 2015-16 season.

     

     

    In this match-up, Ilya Kovalchuk had one goal and two assists in the first game for new Kings head coach, Willie Desjardins.

     

     

     

    San Jose’s Joe Thornton played in his 1499th NHL contest last night and tied Mike Modano for 19th all time.

     

     

    With his next game, Thornton will become the first overall pick in the history of the NHL Draft to reach the 1500 game milestone.

     

    As a note from the contests yesterday, this would only be the fifth time in League history where the home teams swept a schedule of 9+ games.

    -Edmonton Oilers Milan Lucic will have a hearing today for roughing Tampa Bay’s Mathieu Joseph in last night’s contest.

     

     

    The NHL’s Department of Player Safety in accordance to the hearing announced that Lucic has been fined $10,000, the maximum allowed under the CBA, for roughing Mathieu Joseph.

     

     

    -Sportsnet and Hockey Night in Canada’s Elliotte Friedman released his “31 Thoughts” article yesterday. The topic revolves around the Ottawa Senators Uber video and the fallout.

     

     

    -The Los Angeles Kings announced that Adam Oates has joined the team in a consulting role.

    Today is Tuesday, November 6th, 2018, and these are your news and notes..

    There were five contests yesterday…

     

    Boston Bruins Brad Marchand recorded his 13th overtime goal to give the Bruins a record of 8-4-2 thus far on the season. Marchand sits at a five-way tie for 10th place in NHL for overtime winners.

     

     

    Islanders GM Lou Lamoriello became the third general manager in League history to reach the 2400 game plateau. He trails only David Poile and Glen Sather in the 2400+ game mark. Lamoriello won three Stanley Cup championships as the GM of the New Jersey Devils.

     

     

    For the Montreal Canadiens, Joel Armia was the only player to score in the shootout and with the win, Montreal is now 8-4-2 on the season.

     

     

    Brian Boyle netted a hat trick in the contest, the first in his career. Boyle, who recently announced that his cancer is in remission, netted this hat-trick on Hockey Fights Cancer night in Pittsburgh.

     

     

    Washington Capitals F Alex Ovechkin netted his 234th career power-play goal to give the Capitals the victory. This would be Ovechkin’s fifth power-play goal in the season. Since Ovechkin’s debut in the 2005-06 season, Ovechkin has 99 more power-play goals than the next closest player.

     

     

    Connor McDavid in the contest would extend his point streak to eight games, six shy of his personal best at 14 games.

    Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux registered at least three points in a contest for the 49th times in his career. The franchise record is held by Bobby Clarke who had 110 games of at least three points.

    In NHL news…

    -Earlier today, the Chicago Blackhawks announced that Joel Quenneville has been relieved of his coaching duties and announced Jeremy Colliton as the 38th head coach in the franchise’s history.

     

    -The Tampa Bay Lightning will host their annual Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness night tonight when Tampa Bay takes on the Ottawa Senators.

     

    -The Ottawa Senators released a statement about the group of Senators players who mocked coaches and laughed about their play.

    Carey Price Ties Roy For Second In Franchise Wins as the Habs beat the Flames 4-3

     

    The Montreal Canadiens beat the Calgary Flames by a score of 3-2 to improve to 5-1-1 on the season. Carey Price made 21 saves to pick up the win and tie Patrick Roy for second with 289 career wins as a Montreal Canadien.

    The Habs were all over the Flames in the first two periods outshooting them 34-15 after 2 periods.  The Habs finally beat Rittich at the 15:50 mark of the second on a powerplay goal from Petry then 1:49 seconds later Gallagher scored to give the Habs the lead. Xavier Ouellet picked up his first point as a Hab by getting an assist on the Drouin goal.

    Even when the Habs were shorthanded they were getting numerous opportunities.

    A Solid Night for the Habs

    The Domi line for the Habs was on the ice for all three goals and continues to be their best line. Domi, Petry, and Drouin all had two points on the night.

    The Habs were 54% on faceoffs tonight which looks promising going forward.

    The Habs Killed off five penalties and scored two of their three goals on the power play.

    The Habs will Travel to Buffalo to face the Sabres on Thursday night at 7:00 and then play Boston on Saturday Night before returning home to face Dallas next Tuesday.

    Here are your news and notes for Thursday, October 18th, 2018…

     

    There were four contests on the schedule.

    • Alex Ovechkin scored twice, his second multi-goal game of the season to guide the Washington Capitals over the New York Rangers 4-3 in overtime. Ovechkin has notched 122 multi-goal games during his career and his five outing away from entering the top ten in this category.

      Ovechkin would also register his 232nd power-play goal, moving him into the top ten in the NHL’s all time power-play goal scoring list. He is currently tied for ninth place with Dino Ciccarelli.

    • Johnny Gaudreau and the Calgary Flames went on to rout the the Boston Bruins 5-2. Gaudreau would register his 100th career NHL goal in the contest and rookie D Juuso Valimaki would net his first career NHL goal.

      Gaudreau, the 103rd overall pick in the 2011 NHL Draft, became the eighth player from that draft class to net 100 career goals.

    • The Anaheim Ducks were 35 seconds short of a shutout last night when the Ducks took on the New York Islanders. Anaheim would win the contest 4-1 over the New York Islanders.Anaheim G John Gibson registered 34 saves and gives the Ducks a 5-1-1 record thus far on the season. Gibson, in 184 appearances, has a career save percentage of .924. This is tops amongst all goalies with a minimum of 100 games played.
    • The Montreal Canadiens went on to defeat the St, Louis Blues 3-2 last night. Montreal G Carey Price registered 23 saves and Brendan Gallagher scored the game winner with 11 seconds left in regulation to give Montreal their third consecutive win of the season. Montreal is currently 4-1-1 on the season.Carey Price sits one win shy of tying Patrick Toy fro second most wins for a Canadiens goalie.

      Before the contest, the Canadiens would honour Tomas Plekanec for recently playing in his 1,000th NHL game.

    • Pittsburgh Penguins G Matt Murraty is scheduled to return to action tonight.
    • Tom Wilson and Gary Bettman met for over seven hours regarding the appeal for Wilson’s 20-game suspension. A decision will be made from Bettman next week.

    In NHL action last night there were twelve contests.

    • The Washington Capitals were shutout by the New Jersey Devils. Kyle Palmieri scored twice to drub Washington 6-0 in the home opener for the Devils.For TXHT’s coverage for last night’s contest between Washington and New Jersey, please go here.
    • It was an eventful night for the Toronto Maple Leafs as they defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-3. The quartet of Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Morgan Rielly, and Mitch Marner all continued their record-setting start to the season. The Maple Leafs have scored at least five goals in four straight games.     • Phil Kessel recorded his sixth career hat trick to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. This would be Kessel’s first hat trick with the Penguins. Kessel has scored at least 20 goals in the past ten seasons and is one of only five players currently playing in the NHL to achieve this feat.

    Nashville Predators Austin Watson’s 27-game suspension for domestic violence was reduced by NHL/NHLPA neutral arbitator Shyam Das to 18 games last night.

    In relation to the reduced suspension, the NHL released the following statement today:

     

    The Vancouver Canucks announced yesterday that Henrik and Daniel Sedin will have their numbers retired next season.

     

    In a pre-game ceremony in Montreal, the Canadiens honoured the 1993 Stanley Cup championship team.

     

    The Florida Panthers announced that F Micheal Haley will be away from the team to take part in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program.

     

    In NWHL news, the NWHL returns to action tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. ET when the Buffalo Beauts faceoff against the Connecticut Whale in the Twitter Game of the Week. At 7:30 p.m., the Boston Pride faceoff against the Metropolitan Riveters.

    These are your News and Notes for Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018…

    There were no preseason contests yesterday.

    Today is the first day of the regular season in the NHL and there are four contests taking place.

    • The Washington Capitals will raise their Stanley Cup Championship banner tonight in a pre-game ceremony when they take on the Boston Bruins at Capital One Arena. TXHT has the preview of the game here.
    • The Montreal Canadiens take on the Toronto Maple Leafs, which will mark the official debut of John Tavares. Tavares joined the Maple Leafs as a free agent over the summer. For TXHT’s preview of this match-up, please check out Steve Gardiner’s game preview

    • The Calgary Flames face off against the Vancouver Canucks. For the Canucks this marks the first season without Henrik and Daniel Sedin, who retired last season, since the 1999-2000 season.
    • The Anaheim Ducks face off against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center. For the Sharks this will mark the official debut of Erik Karlsson, who joined the team after a trade

    In NHL news today:

    • The Buffalo Sabres announced that Jack Eichel has been named team captain.
    • The Washington Capitals announced that Jayson Megna has been placed on waivers.
    • Montreal Canadiens head coach Claude Julian announced that Karl Alzner and Tomas Plekanec will be healthy scratches tonight. This will end Karl Alzner’s consecutive-games played streak at 622, which is the fourth longest activer streak in the NHL and the 12th longest in NHL history.
    • The NHL announced all 31 teams opening night 23-man rosters earlier today
    • Former NWHL player and United States captain Meghan Duggan married three-time Canadian women’s gold medalist Gillian Apps two weeks ago. Duggan played for the Boston Pride and the Buffalo Beauts. Gillian Apps would play in the CWHL with the Brampton Thunder (now Markham Thunder).
