    Overview

Montréal missed the postseason for the thrid consecutive season as the Habs continue their rebuild. Kirby Dach going down in the second game of the season last year hurt the team in the continuing rebuild process. Dach does return, but will he be able to not only be healthy but find the game he had in the 2022-23 season.

C Michael Hage was drafted with the 23rd overall pick in this summer’s draft, but do not expect him to be called up to the roster, as he will be with the University of Michigan, after the Habs acquired Ivan Demidov with the fifth overall pick.

Fans have been patient with the rebuild in Montréal, but any hope for a return to the postseason may have to be put on hold for at least one more season.

    Offense

Montréal will once again need to lean heavy on the top line of Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkovsky, as the trio scored 81 goals. The trio were the only ones to score more than 20 goals for a team that finished 26th in offense. Head Coach Martin St. Louis will have to lean on the offense production from the rest of team if they expect to improve.

    Defense

Mike Matheson had a fantastic season with 62 points which was ninth among all blue liners last season in the league. The team also finished fourth for goals and can improve on that with the bevy of talent that has been acquired in the past few drafts of the rebuild. The addition of Lane Hutson will add nice power to the talents of not only Matheson and David Savard, but Kaden Guhle as well.

    Goaltending

The three man crew in net will not apply this season as Jake Allen was traded to New Jersey at the trade deadline last spring. Sam Montembeault will be the top man as he enters the first year of the three year contract he signed as Cayden Primeau becomes the back-up. However, with Primeau in a contract year, he could challenge Montembeault for top minutes.

    Special Teams

The Power Play unit finished 27th while the Penalty Kill finished 24th, which did not do Montréal any favours. There is a new coach in charge of the special teams as Alex Burrows moved on to take a player developmental consultant role. The trio of Suzuki, Caufield, and Slafkovsky accounted for 27 of the 44 PP goals scored, while Matheson accounted for five additional goals. Montréal accounted for the seventh most penalty mintues, which added additional pressure on the penalty kill unit.

    Overall

Montréal is still at least another or two from a return to the postseason and unless there is a magical season akin to the 2021 Stanley Cup postseason run, it could be another long season for Montréal fans.

Alex Newhook (F), Tanner Pearson (F)

    2023-24 Preview

For the Montreal Canadiens, they need to stay healthy if they aim to contend once again. The Habs have not had the best of luck in this category. Montreal had 751 man game lost last season, breaking the record of 720 they had set during the 2021-22 season.

Changes were made with the training staff as Graham Rynbend, the head athletic trainer, being dismissed after 19 years. Then, Donald Balmforth, the head physiotherapist, was also let go after two years. The replacements there with Jim Ramsay and Maxime Gauthier, respectively, should bring fresh eyes on overall player health.

Special teams is also one key piece of the puzzle that the Habs need to focus on. Montreal finished 29th in both the Power Play and the Penalty Kill. In order for both of these items to improve, the overall health of the line-up is important.

Despite the injuries the Canadiens had last season, there was a 13 point improvement. However, this will also be the second full season of a complete re-build process.

Montreal is possibly one year away from their re-build and aim to be in contention once again.

    Offense

It is not a secret that the offense has not been a strong point for Montreal. Forward Nick Suzuki was the leading scorer at 66 points, good for 70th in the NHL. Forward Cole Caufield was on pace to have a 46 goal season, but he had a season ending shoulder injury. Montreal has not had a 40 goal scorer since Vincent Damphousse 30 years ago.

There also has not been a player finish in the top 10 in scoring since the 1985-86 season when Mats Naslund hit that mark. The Habs need to have the right momentum if they expect to contend once again.

    Defense

This is a young defensive minded squad with five rookies last year that saw at least 39 games last season. The five rookies are relied on this season to keep things together. The defense allowed the 29th most goals on average last season at 3.72.

As the Montreal Canadiens aim to contend once again, Sam Montembeault will look to continue to improve between the pipes. – Photo Courtesy of the Montreal Canadiens

    Overall Outlook

Montreal, as stated above, is at least a year away from possibly making any kind of postseason contention.

After 14 rookies saw action, including the 2022 top pick in Juraj Slafkovksy, health is very important. With this, there should be less of a reliance on the players in their AHL affiliate, so those players can be developed further.

With a healthy squad, Montreal should aim to contend once again and return to the postseason.

    2022-23 Preview

In one of the worst seasons in the longtime storied franchises, the Montreal Canadiens look to improve from the 22 win campaign from last season.

To start off, there was a lot of optimism as Montreal was fresh off of their first appearance in the Stanley Cup Final since 1993. However, injuries mounted with the Habs and things never got any better. Dominique Ducharme, who signed an extension just after the Stanley Cup Final, was relieved of his duties in February, after only being head coach for seven months, and Martin St. Louis was named the interim head coach. Offencive production was down under Ducharme but when St. Louis came in, that production improved but by that point, it was too late and the Habs front office would start planning for the offseason.

This will be another season for rebuilding. Montreal should be better when it comes to the top six as well as with the blue line. The big question mark for the Canadiens and their fans remains. What will happen with G Carey Price? It has been rumoured that Price may very well miss the 2022-23 season with ongoing knee issues that lingered through the end of last season. Is Jake Allen read to take the reins for another season or will Sam Montembeault be the starter in net?

On the offensive side of the puck, newcomer Kirby Dach, who at the time of the writing of this, has not signed a new deal, should provide excellent offencive skills. Will this be the year that Cole Caufield finally breaks through and has top six minutes?

On the defencive side, the defence will look much different. The biggest question mark here is will the blue line be able to gel together and not have a lot issues or will the defence be a question once more?

    Game Recap:

After a very solid win last night against the Pittsburgh Penguins at home, the New Jersey Devils cross the Canadian border tonight to take on the Montréal Canadiens. It would be the Canadians who will get on the board first as Brenden Gallagher would tip in a Jeff Petry shot from the point to give the Canadiens an early 1-0 lead. However, Devils winger Nikita Gusev would tie the game up 1-1 as Blake Coleman would feed the puck across to him across the goalie crease and into the back of the net. After the first period, the score would be tied at 1-1.

Period two saw Montreal Canadiens rookies Nick Suzuki and Cale Fleury each score to give the Canadiens a 3-1 lead. Fleury’s goal would be his first goal in the National Hockey League. With about two seconds left in the second period, Nico Hischier would score short handed to get the Devils within one goal. Going into period three, the Devils trailed the Canadiens 3-2.

The Devils were able to tie the game at the 15:12 mark as Wayne Simmonds would score his fourth goal of the year. However, the Devils barely were able to force overtime. Montreal thought Phillip Danault had scored the game winner with close to a minute left until it was determined via video review the Canadiens had kicked the puck in the back of the net. The reversal would be considered controversial but overtime came nonetheless where Kyle Palmieri would score the game winner in 3 on 3 overtime. New Jersey would walk away with extra point and back to back victories. MacKenzie Blackwood was spectacular as he made 31 saves.
