    Whale And Riveters Set For Playoff Rematch

    The first playoff game for the NWHL this year will take place on Thurday March 7th at 7p EST. It features the two teams that finished fourth and fifth in the season standings. Finishing fourth place, and the host of this playoff match up, is the Metropolitan Riveters. Unfortunately, finishing last in the standing is the Connecticut Whale. The game will take place at the RJW Barnabas Health Hockey House.

    Last year these two teams met in the Isobel Cup semi final game which saw the Riveters win that game, and would go on to win the championship that year, beating the Buffalo Beauts in the finals.

    A quick look back at that game, the goalie match up last year was Katie Fitzgerald for the Riveters, and Sydney Rossman for the Whale. The Riveters jumped out to a quick lead, after a minute into the game, the goal coming from Rebecca Russo. This got the crowd going and the Riveters dominated play. However at the end of the first period, the Riveters only had a 1-0 lead.

    In the second period, it was more of the same, dominance from the Riveters and eventually a breakthrough for them, as Erika Lawler would net a goal a little over halfway through the second period.

    Unfortunately in the third period, the wheels came off from the Whale. About halfway through, when the Whale were on the power play, Madison Packer got a breakaway and scored while short handed. This really deflated any possible notion of a Whale comeback, because shortly after, the Riveters would get two more goals in quick fashion. Goals coming from Bray Ketchum and Kelly Nash. Rossman would depart from the game after the Ketchum goal and Keira Goin would finish the game. It ended with the final score being 5-0 in favor of the home team.

    Fast forward a year later and both teams are again meeting in the playoffs. Perfect time for some revenge? Possibly. We do know that the Riveters will be starting Katie Fitzgerald on Thursday, info provided from Mike Murphy.

    How have the Whale fared against the Riveters this season? Decently. Their record against them is 2-1-1 and they are also 1-0-1 against them in Newark, NJ.

    The last time that the Whale and the Riveters matched up was on January 6th, a 6-3 victory for the Riveters. However it was Maria Sorokina in net for the Riveters, and the previous loss to the Riveters was back on November 25th, a shootout loss with Kimberly Sass in net.

    Why bring that up? Well, the last time the Whale faced off against the Riveters with Katie Fitzgerald in net was all the way back on December 2nd, which was a 4-0 victory for the Whale in Pittsburgh; and the first game that these two teams squared off against each other was all the way back on November 18th, a 2-1 victory for the Whale with, you guessed it, Katie Fitzgerald in net. So this year, the Whale are a perfect 2-0 against Katie Fitzgerald.

    Will the Whale continue to be the kryptonite against Katie Fitzgerald? Or will Fitzgerald go on another spectacular run in the playoffs like she did last year, posting two shutouts?

    3 Players to Watch

    Audra Richards: The Minnesota native and Riveters rookie has had an incredible year for them, scoring 8 goals! 6 of her 8 goals have come against the Whale, including a hat trick! She is the only player in the NWHL to record a hat trick this season!

    Katerina Mrázová: The Czech international, and Whale rookie has put up some stellar numbers this year, she leads the team in points with 12 (6g, 6a). 6 of her 12 points on the year have come against the Riveters (4g, 2a).

    Shannon Doyle: The Whale blue liner has had a great year this season. She is one of the most consistent players for them. Against the Riveters, she has 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points. Both of her goals against the Riveters have been incredible, they include a game winner in the final minute and a sick deke against Katie Fitzgerald.

    Yesterday’s results:

    Washington 3, NY RANGERS 2 (SO)

    The Washington Capitals took on the New York Rangers for a matinee game and would escape this contest with a much needed win and would regain the top spot in the Metropolitan Division.

    This game would not be without controversy in the shootout when Rangers goaltender Alexander Georgiev would throw his stick at an oncoming Alex Ovechkin on the latters shootout attempt.  It would at first be called a no goal but then after a meeting between all four on ice officials, it would be called a goal and the Capitals would pick up the win.

    Philadelphia 4, NY ISLANDERS 1

    There would be four different goal scorers for the Philadelphia Flyers as they would take down the New York Islanders by the score of 4-1 yesterday afternoon.

    VEGAS 3, Vancouver 0

    The Vancouver Canucks would face off against the Vegas Golden Knights yesterday and would get crushed, losing by the score of 3-0.

    The Canucks would get out shot 49-19 in the contest and Vegas goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury would have his eighth shutout on the season in this contest, the most for a goaltender on the season.

     

    ANAHEIM 2, Colorado 1

    The Anaheim Ducks would take on the Colorado Avalanche and would get a much needed win for the Ducks.

    Ottawa 3, FLORIDA 2

     

    Winnipeg 5, COLUMBUS 2

    The Winnipeg Jets would visit the Columbus Blue Jackets and would come away with the 5-2 win over Columbus thanks to four goals in the contest by Winnipeg’s Blake Wheeler.

     

    Nashville 3, MINNESOTA 2 (SO)

    The Nashville Predators would take on the Minnesota Wild and would escape with the 3-2 win in the shootout frame.

    SAN JOSE 5, Chicago 2

     

    Today there are only two games on the NHL slate.

    NWHL

     

    Yesterday would close out the regular season for the NWHL.  Two contests took place with the Minnesota Whitecaps visiting the Connecticut Whale and the Buffalo Beauts visiting the Metropolitan Riveters.

     

    Minnesota Whitecaps 4, CONNECTICUT WHALE 1

    First in the Minnesota Whitecaps at the Connecticut Whale game, the Minnesota Whitecaps would clinch the number one seed in the NWHL Isobel Cup playoffs with the 4-1 win over the Whale.

    Minnesota’s Lauren Barnes would score twice, these being the first goals of her NWHL career, and Amanda Boulier picked up two assists in the contest.  Whitecaps goaltender Amanda Leveille would go on to have 24 saves on 25 attempts in the contest to seal the first regular season championship for Minnesota who continued to make history for the franchise and the NWHL.

    Minnesota will host the winner of the play-in game between the Connecticut Whale and the Metropolitan Riveters on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., ET/1:30 p.m., CT at the TRIA Rink.

    METROPOLITAN RIVETERS 4, Buffalo Beauts 3 (SO)

    In an exciting back and forth game, the Metropolitan Riveters would come back from a 2-0 deficit to take down the Buffalo Beauts with the 4-3 win in the shootout yesterday afternoon.

    Throughout the second period, there would be multiple penalties between both teams and Riveters Madison Parker would be the only one to take advantage of the extra woman on the ice with Parker’s goal at the 17:41 mark.

    Riveters Taylor Accursi would end up netting the winner in the shootout frame to seal the win for Metropolitan and they will now host the Connecticut Whale in the play-in contest of the 2019 NWHL Isobel Cup Playoffs on Thursday night at 7 p.m., ET at the RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House.  The winner of that contest will take on the Minnesota Whitecaps at TRIA Rink on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., ET.

    LOS ANGELES 6, Chicago 3

    There would be six different scorers for the Los Angeles Kings last night in the 6-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks yesterday afternoon.

     

    BOSTON 1, New Jersey 0

    Boston Bruins Brad Marchand would score the lone goal in the contest with the goal at the 2:37 mark in the first period and he would be unsuccessful on registering the penalty shot in the first period at the 7:16 mark.

     

    TORONTO 5, Buffalo 2

    The Toronto Maple Leafs would have a convincing 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres last night in Toronto.  For Toronto, there would be five different goal scorers in the contest.

    The Maple Leafs would also reach the 40 win plateau for the season in the fastest amount in the long and storied history of the franchise.

     

    Pittsburgh 5, MONTREAL 1

    The Pittsburgh Penguins would face off against the Montreal Canadiens last night and there would be four different goal scorers in the contest with Pittsburgh’s Jake Guentzel scoring two of the goals.

     

     

    TAMPA BAY 5, Ottawa 1

    The Tampa Bay Lightning would tie the League record for fewest games to get to the 50 win mark with Lightning’s 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators last night.

     

    Carolina 4, FLORIDA 3 (OT)

    The Carolina Hurricanes would win their fifth straight game with the 4-3 win in overtime over the Florida Panthers.

    Carolina’s Sebastian Aho would become the first player in franchise history to score the game winner in three consecutive games.

     

    Dallas 4, ST LOUIS 1

     

     

    ARIZONA 3, Detroit 1

    In this contest, the Arizona Coyotes would take down the Detroit Red Wings with the 3-1 win and with the win, the Coyotes would win their sixth straight contest for the first time in seven seasons.

     

    This win streak at six games means it is also the last time the team reached the postseason in the 2011-12 season, when they would reach the Western Conference Final.

     

    Minnesota 4, CALGARY 2

    There would be four different goal scorers for the Minnesota Wild as they would take down the Calgary Flames with the 4-2 win at the Calgary Saddledome last night.

    In a pre-game ceremony, the Calgary Flames retired Jarome Iginla’s number 12 to the rafters.

    In NWHL action yesterday, the Minnesota Whitecaps would defeat the Boston Pride with the 2-1 win.    Minnesota’s Jonna Curtis would score the goal late to seal the win for the Whitecaps.  This would be a crucial contest for the NWHL playoff standings.

    Minnesota Whitecaps 2, BOSTON PRIDE 1

     

    Buffalo Beauts 5, CONNECTICUT WHALE 2

    The other NWHL contest yesterday pitted the Buffalo Beauts against the Connecticut Whale and the Beauts would come away with their seventh straight win with the 5-2 win.

    The Buffalo Beauts would open up the scoring with the games first five goals, with all five goals coming from different Beauts players.

    The contest would be a hard fought battle, with a fair share of penalties throughout the entire contest.

    There are two NWHL games today…

    The NWHL Twitter Game of the Week pits the Metropolitan Riveters against the Buffalo Beauts and that game will be available on the NWHL’s Twitter page at 3 p.m., ET.

    The other game today is the Minnesota Whitecaps facing off against the Connecticut Whale at 3 p.m., ET and that contest can be seen on the NWHL’s website at NWHL.zone.

    The playoff outlook for the NWHL playoffs will be determined at the conclusion of today’s game with the NWHL Isobel Cup Playoff schedule being announced tomorrow.

    Today is Saturday, February 23rd, 2019, and these are your news and notes.

     

    There were five contests that took place yesterday.

     

    Columbus 3, OTTAWA 0

    The Columbus Blue Jackets would take on the Ottawa Senators last night and would come away with another shutout victory on the season.  The Blue Jackets would go on to outshoot the Senators in this contest with 40 shots on goal to Ottawa’s 22.

    This would be the Senators third consecutive loss and in their last ten games, Ottawa has a record of 3-7-0.

     

    Minnesota 3, DETROIT 2

    In a hard fought contest last night in Detroit, the Minnesota Wild would go on to defeat the Detroit Red Wings with the 3-2 win last night.  The win for the Wild movers them to a record of 29-27-6, while the Red Wings fall to a record of 23-30-9.

     

    Colorado 5, CHICAGO 3

    In another hard fought battle last night, the Colorado Avalanche would face off against the Chicago Blackhawks and the Avalanche would escape with a 5-3 win.  Chicago would tie the game a 3 a piece at the 10 minute mark in the third period but would be able to mount a comeback against Colorado.

    Colorado would move to one point behind the Minnesota Wild and Chicago with the loss is now three points behind Minnesota for the final wild card spot in the Western Conference.

     

    CALGARY 2, Anaheim 1

    The Anaheim Ducks woes on the season would continue with the loss last night to the Calgary Flames.

    With Calgary’s win, they continue to hold the top spot in the Pacific Division with a record of 38-16-7, good for 83 points.

     

    Winnipeg 6, VEGAS 3

    The Winnipeg Jets would go on to double up the Vegas Golden Knights 6-3, thanks to two goals from Winnipeg’s Patrik Laine.

    Winnipeg holds on to a slim lead in the Central Division standings thanks to the win.

    The Golden Knights hold on to the third spot in the Pacific Division, despite the loss to the Jets last night.

     

     

    There are 11 games on the NHL schedule today including the 2019 NHL Stadium Series between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania tonight at 8 p.m.

    Game Recap – 2/18/2019 – Boston Pride vs. Metropolitan Riveters

    Boston Pride (9-4-0 18pts) v. Metropolitan Riveters (3-10-0 6pts)

     

    Game Recap:

    The Boston Pride and the Metropolitan Riveters face off for a President’s Day matinee, which is also their makeup game from January 20th when it was postponed due to a snow storm, and it would be the Pride to strike early as Mary Parker would knock in a rebound from a Kaleigh Fratkin point shot three minutes into the game. The Pride would keep on pushing the game in their favor as McKenna Brand would score on the wraparound to give the Pride a 2-0 lead. The Riveters would generate some offense, but it has been all Boston so far. Then to add on to their lead, Czech forward Denisa Krizova would score her fourth of the season to give the Pride a 3-0 lead.

     

    In what would be considered an “even” back and forth period, it would be the Pride who would be dominant over the Riveters. Katie Burt stood on her head making miraculous save after save, and then in the minutes of the second period the Riveters would take a bench minor for too many women on the ice to which the Pride made them pay for quickly as Gigi Marvin would score seconds into the powerplay, and then 23 seconds later score her second of the game giving the Pride a 5-0 lead over the Riveters.

     

    To start the third period, the Riveters would switch their goalie as Maria Sorokina would come in to replace Kimberly Sass, but it would not matter as less than three minutes into the third period Mary Parker would score her second of the game from a tight angle. Then it would be Rockville, MD native Haley Skarupa getting feed a pass in the slot and she would just skate in unopposed to make it 7-0 for the Pride with her 5th of the season. The Pride would not let up however as Jillian Dempsey would score an NWHL record 34th career goal as the Pride would go up 8-0. The Riveters would end the Katie Burt’s shutout bid as Amanda Kessel would not quit as she would score her second goal of the season to get the Riveters on the board.

    TXHT at the NWHL All Star Festivities!

    The NWHL hosted their All Star festivities in Nashville, TN this past weekend. The best players from all five teams came down and showcased their talents in front of an electric Nashville crowd. The skills competition was held at the Ford Ice Center, the practice facility for the Predators; while the All Star Game itself was at the Bridgestone Arena in Downtown Nashville.

    Here’s how the rosters looked for the weekend:

    Skills Competition

    It was a full house at the Ford Ice Center for the NWHL skills competition; people gathered to watch the players have fun and show off. The first event was the fastest skater, in which Kristin Lewicki won the event last year. This year had the likes of Michelle Picard, Amanda Pelkey, Lexi Bender, and Kendall Coyne Schofield for Team Szabados; and Lisa Chesson, Jonna Curtis, Kate Schipper, and Allie Thunstrom for Team Stecklein. If anyone saw the NHL’s fastest skater competition, knows that Coyne was going to be the odds on favorite, and she delivered. Coyne was actually faster than when she did the NHL’s event, [14.3 for the NHL and 13.9 for the NWHL].

    The next competition was the fastest goalies, in which Amanda Leveille returned to defend her title. All four goalies Katie Burt, Amanda Leveille, Shannon Szabados, and Nicole Hensley skated. The final showdown came in the form of a “battle of the teammates” Szabados v Hensley, and it was Nicole Hensley who claims bragging rights.

    Accuracy shooting was up next, where Corinne Buie was the winner last year. The three shooters for Team Szabados were Haley Skarupa, Haley Scamurra, and Savannah Harmon and the three shooters for Team Stecklein were Hannah Brandt, Dani Cameranesi, and Emily Pfalzer. In the end, it was Dani Cameranesi who proved to be the most accurate!

    Talents were on display during the next event, which was the trick shot challenge. All of the skaters have great hands and great creative minds. For Team Szabados it was Amanda Kessel, Madison Packer, and Katerina Mrázová and for Team Stecklein it was Gigi Marvin, Emily Fluke, and Jillian Dempsey. In this particular event, the fans got to vote for the winner of the competition. The event had everything, from Amanda Kessel doing the Flying V from the Mighty Ducks, to Madison Packer with a smooth spin-o-rama attempt that almost scored, to Emily Fluke throwing a cowboy hat, and having her second shot saved by Katie Burt with her back toward her.

    In the end it was Team Stecklein who won over the fans and getting their vote.

    Up next was the hardest shot competition with players who can really bring the heat on their slapshots. Last years winner of the event was Kelsey Koezler, and the players looking to take the title were, for Team Szabados were Shannon Doyle, Amanda Boulier, Audra Richards, and Blake Bolden; and for Team Stecklein were Michelle Löwenhielm, Alyssa Gagliardi, Courtney Burke, and the captain Lee Stecklein. There were a lot of really hard shots, but Blake Bolden won with her shot reaching 80 mph!

    The last event was a go for goal shootout relay in which all the skaters for Team Szabados and Team Stecklein took shootout attempts, and the team with the most goals was declared the winner. After some pretty nifty attempts, it was Team Stecklein who won the event.

    This meant at the end of all competitions, both teams were tied at three wins a piece. It meant that to settle it in a tiebreaker, it was captain vs captain in a best two out of three shootout attempts. Szabados made all the saves and her team won the Skills Competition!

    All Star Game

    The All Star Game took place at Bridgestone Arena after the Blues v. Predators game, in which the St. Louis Blues proved victorious in overtime.

    It wouldn’t be Nashville without someone throwing a catfish on the ice that landed right by Shannon Doyle just before the opening faceoff.

    Both teams skated to two 25 minute halves of four on four hockey. In the first half, Team Szabados jumped out to the lead, the goal coming from the Riveters rookie forward Audra Richards. Richards, who has eight goals on the year continues her scoring prowess by getting the opening marker. Later in the half, Shannon Doyle led the rush and made a nice drop pass on top of the circle, and it fell on the stick of leading Connecticut Whale scorer Katerina Mrázová, who roofed the shot over Nicole Hensley. The goal gave Team Szabados a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

    During the intermission, and because Nashville is known as Music City, there was some live music being played while we waited for the second half.

    The second half had a lot of good back and forth action and then Gigi Marvin took a shot from the point which got redirected by Lisa Chesson and it found the net beating Katie Burt. The goal cut the Team Szabados lead in half. Later in the half, the game would be tied at two as Whale captain Emily Fluke netting a five hole goal!

    Both goalies [Leveille and Burt] made really incredible saves and at the end of the second half, the score was tied at two. The game moved into a shootout in which Amanda Kessel was the first shooter and she beat Leveille five hole. Then Katie Burt stopped all three Team Stecklein attempts, giving the victory to Team Szabados!

    The best part about the All Star Game weekend was the attendance by the Nashville faithful. The recorded attendance was 6, 120, which set a record for largest crowd for a women’s hockey game in the United States!

    Today is Monday, February 4th, 2019, and these are your news and notes from yesterday.

     

    There were only three games on the NHL slate yesterday.

     

     

     

    Boston 1, WASHINGTON 0

    The Boston Bruins would take on the Washington Capitals and would come away with the 1-0 win.  The Washington Capitals have a record of 2-6-2 in their last ten games.

    MONTREAL 4, Edmonton 3 (OT)

    There would be four different scorers for the Montreal Canadiens in this contest against the Edmonton Oilers and would win this contest 4-3 in the overtime frame.

     

    Edmonton would end the weekend of games with overtime heartbreakers, including losing in overtime in this contest to the Canadiens.

     

    Calgary 4, CAROLINA 3

    Four different goal scorers would help the Calgary flames defeat the the Carolina Hurricanes with a 4-3 win over the Carolina Hurricanes in Raleigh, North Carolina yesterday afternoon.

     

    There will be four games taking place on the NHL schedule tonight.

     

     

    NWHL

     

    To recap from this weekend’s slate of NWHL contests…

     

    The Buffalo Beauts faced off against the Metropolitan Riveters in the NWHL Twitter Game of the Week and would come away with the 3-2 win to notch their fifth straight win.  With the win, the Buffalo Beauts moved to a record of 9-4-0 on the season.

    This would be the first game for the Beauts at RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House since the Isobel Cup final last season, when they would fall to the Riveters 1-0.

    Both teams’ top lines were held at bay throughout the contest as the Beauts got goals from Taylor Accursi, Julianna Iafallo and Savannah Harmon.

    For the Riveters’, their third line produced with Rebecca Morse and Kristin Lewicki each scoring their first goals of the season with Alexa Aramburu picking up the assists on both of the goals.

    The Beauts will next have NWHL action against the Metropolitan Riveters on February 23rd.

    The Whale’s next NWHL contest will be on Sunday, February 24th against the Boston Pride.

    The Boston Pride would face off against the Connecticut Whale and would come away with the 3-1 win.  The Boston Pride are now 9-4-0 on the season, tied with the Buffalo Beauts for the same mark.  With the loss, the Whale are now 2-9-2 on the season.

    For the Pride, Jillian Dempsey and Denisa Krizova would both have a goal and assist in this contest.  Dempsey leads all Boston Pride skaters with nine goals on the season and is second in the league.

    Boston would get on the board just 1:20 into the game with Krizova scoring the goal.

    Connecticut’s Rachael Ade would score to tie the game 1-1 with 55 seconds left in the first period.  That would be Ade’s first career NWHL goal.

    Dempsey would score her ninth goal of the season with her goal less than two minutes into the second period.  Throughout most of the third period, the Whale would spend this time on the penalty kill.  Toni Ann Milano would take advantage of a good rebound of the puck, sealing the 3-1 win for the Boston Pride.

    The NWHL All-Star Game will commence next weekend in Nashville, Tennessee with the resumption of the NWHL schedule on Monday, February 18th, with the Boston Pride taking on the Metropolitan Riveters in a make-up contest that was postponed due to inclement weather.

    Today is February 3rd, 2019, and these are your news and notes.

     

    There were 13 matchups yesterday in NHL action.

     

     

     

    PHILADELPHIA 5, Edmonton 4 (OT)

    The Philadelphia Flyers took on the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL European Game of the Week and would go on to defeat Edmonton 5-4 in the overtime frame.

     

    Philadelphia’s Nolan Patrick would go on to score the game winner at the 2:01 mark in the overtime frame.

    With this win by the Flyers, they have now won seven games in a row and eight out of their last ten games.

     

    New Jersey 3, MONTREAL 2 (OT)

    The New Jersey Devils would go on to defeat the Montreal Canadiens in overtime thanks to two goals by Nico Hischier, including the game-winner in the overtime frame.

    Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Phillip Danault would be the goal scorers for the Canadiens in this contest.

     

     

    TORONTO 3, Pittsburgh 2

    The Toronto Maple Leafs would take on the Pittsburgh Penguins and would come away with the 3-2 win, after being down 2-0 in the first period.

    Detroit 2, OTTAWA 0

     

    The Detroit Red Wings with this win over the Ottawa Senators would win back to back games.

     

    The Red Wings would score the only two goals in the contest in the first period with no one scoring any goals in the second or third periods.

     

    FLORIDA 3, Vegas 1

    The Vegas Golden Knights would fall to the Florida Panthers, leading to a three game skid.

    With the win by Florida, they now have a record of 21-21-8 on the season, good for 50 points.

     

    NY ISLANDERS 4, Los Angeles 2

    The New York Islanders would go on to double up the Los Angeles Kings with a 4-2 win.  Ryan Pulock would go on to have a three assist night, notching all three assists in the third period.

     

     

     

    St. Louis 4, COLUMBUS 2

    With the 4-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues, the Columbus Blue Jackets would go on to split the season series.

     

    St. Louis Vladimir Tarasenko would go on to register one goal and two assists in the contest.

     

     

    WINNIPEG 9, Anaheim 3

    The Winnipeg Jets throttled the Anaheim Ducks with a 9-3 win, and giving the Jets 70 points thus far on the season.

    Winnipeg’s Jack Roslovic would go on to register a hat trick in this contest, his first career hat trick.

     

    With the 9-3 loss, the Ducks have lost their last three games and have a record of 2-6-2 in their last ten contests.

    TAMPA BAY 3, NY Rangers 2

    In a hard fought contest the Tampa Bay Lightning would go on to defeat the New York Rangers with a 3-2 win at Madison Square Garden last night.

     

     

    Dallas 3, NASHVILLE 1

    The Dallas Stars would go on to win their fourth straight contest with the 3-1 win over the Nashville Predators last night.

    Despite being tied going into the third period, the Nashville Predators would fall to the Stars.

     

    Chicago 4, MINNESOTA 3 (OT)

     

    Vancouver 5, COLORADO 1


    SAN JOSE 3, Arizona 2 (OT)

    Today is Monday, january 14th, 2019, and these are your news and notes.

     

    There were six games that took place yesterday.

     

    CAROLINA 6, Nashville 3

     

    Carolina Hurricanes Sebastian Aho would go on to record a hat trick in the contest and Nashville Predators Filip Forsberg would go on to have a two goal performance in the Carolina’s 6-3 win.

    Aho would be the fourth player in the franchise history of the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Hurricanes to begin their career with the franchise and  have three seasons with at least 20 goals.

     

    Justin Williams would also extend his goal scoring streak to five games and be the sixth player to do this at the age of 37 or older.

     

    WINNIPEG 4, Anaheim 3 (OT)

    The Winnipeg Jets would win this contest with 11 seconds left to take down the Anaheim Ducks 4-3.  Winnipeg’s Bryan Little would score his 10th goal on the season with this game winner.

    Winnipeg Jets Patrik Laine would join a rare company when he scored his 25th goal on the season.

     

    He would be the seventh player in League history to have at least three 25 goal seasons before their 21st birthday.

     

    COLUMBUS 7, NY Rangers 5

     

    Before the contest between both teams, Rick Nash, who had played for both franchises in his career, participated in the ceremonial puck drop.

     

     

    Columbus would go on to win its third game in four days in this contest when they went on to defeat the New York Rangers by the score of 7-5.

     

     

    NY ISLANDERS 5, Tampa Bay 1

    The New York Islanders faced off against the Tampa Bay Lightning and would win the contest 5-1.  With the Islanders win, they would snap the Lightning’s 12 game win streak against Metropolitan division opponents.

     

    NY Islanders goaltender Thomas Griess would go on to have a 26 save performance in this contest to extend the hot streak that the Islanders have been on.  The team has won eight out of their last ten contests.

    The Lightning now has a record of 35-9-2 on the season, good for 72 points.

     

    VANCOUVER 5, Florida 1

    Vancouver’s Loui Eriksson would open up the scoring in the second period for the Canucks when he scored his eighth goal in the season, giving Vancouver the 1-0 lead at the 12:32 mark.

    Late in the third period, Brock Boeser and Jay Beagle would both score empty net goals, sealing the 5-1 win for the Canucks.

    Eriksson had a four-point night to top all scorers for points in the game.

     

    CALGARY 7, Arizona 1

    The Calgary Flames would take on the Arizona Coyotes last night and the Flames would drub the Coyotes, winning the contest by the score of 7-1.

    Calgary’s Matthew Tkachuk and Mark Giordano would score twice in the contest and Johnny Gaudreau would score a goal and have an assist in the contest.

    Arizona’s lone goal would come on a power play from Jordan Oesterle late in the second period.  Arizona cold never get out of the box and would fall behind early.

    With this contest, the Flames would hold onto their best record in the Western Conference and now has a record of 30-13-4 (64 pts) Arizona has a record of 20-22-3 (43 pts).

    Saturday in the two NWHL contests…

     

    BOXSCORE: Buffalo Beauts 5, Metropolitan Riveters 1

     

     

    For the first time since the 2018 Isobel Cup Final last March, the Buffalo Beauts and Metropolitan Riveters faced off and the Beauts would walk away with a dominant 5-1 win over the Riveters at HarborCenter yesterday afternoon in the NWHL Twitter Game of the Week.

    Buffalo’s Hayley Scamurra would score twice and by doing so would tie teammate Maddie Elia for the lead in NWHL goals with nine on the season.

     

    BOXSCORE: Boston Pride 5, Minnesota Whitecaps 4

     

     

    In the contest between the Boston Pride and the Minnesota Whitecaps, The Pride went on to defeat the Whitecaps by the score of 5-4.

    This was a contest for the battle for first place overall in the NWHL standings and this contest was playded before a sold out crowd at the Warrior Ice Arena.

    This was the first contest since the Pride announced the new partnership with the NHL’s Boston Bruins.

    The scoring in this contest would be fast and furious as the Whitecaps would open up the scoring in the first period when Minnesota’s Kendall Coyne Schofield would score at the 3:25 mark.  Then Boston would even the score just 35 seconds later when Kaleigh Fratkin scored her second goal on the season.

    Then at the 6:24 mark, Boston’s Amanda Pelkey would score her fourth goal on the season.  Almost two minutes later, Minnesota’s Amanda Menke would even the score at 2 a piece.  After that, the Pride would score three unanswered goals to give the Pride a 5-2 lead at the end of the first period.

    The second and third periods were quiet on the scoring front for the Pride but the Whitecaps would score a goal in each period.  However, that would not be enough as the Minnesota Whitecaps would fall to the Pride in their first game on the weekend.

     

     

    Yesterday’s action in the NWHL…

     

    BOXSCORE: Minnesota Whitecaps 4, Connecticut Whale 1

     

     

    After falling to the Boston Pride 5-2 on Saturday night, the Minnesota Whitecaps would have a dominant performance against the Connecticut Whale and would defeat the Whale by the score of 4-1.

    Minnesota’s Janna Curtis would open up the scoring for the Whitecaps with her goal at the 6:58 mark in the first period, her sixth on the season.  Then about six minutes later, Hannah Brandt would score a goal on the power play to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead.

    Minnesota goaltender Amanda Leveille would once again have a contest with great saves and would register 26 saves in the contest.

    Amy Menke would have a great game, registering two assists before getting a goal of her own about halfway through the second period.

    Despite having four minutes of power play time in the third period, the Whale would not convert on the chances given and would fall to the Whitecaps.
