  • The Pendrys Files – The Riveters Presser

The Pendrys Files – The Riveters Presser

The Metropolitan Riveters have a new look with only 3 returning players and a new Head Coach Venla Hovi. On Wednesday, Hovi and Captain Madison Packer took questions from the media. Here are some highlights.

Before getting into the Riveters themselves at one point in the presser in response to a question from TXHT Packer spoke about what excited her about the league in general as the off season brought numerous new staff members to the PHF including a new commissioner. The Riveters Captain who has been in the league since its inception had glowing things to say about several developments:

“Obviously the hiring of Reagan [Carey] was huge, the addition of [Brianna] Decker and [Kacey] Bellamy and a few others is a huge step in a right direction,” Packer said. “They are going to demand a certain level of excellence. I’ll speak specifically for Reagan and Decker because I’ve worked with them and alongside them on a lot of things. They demand excellence in everything that they do and that’s not going to change. Certainly that’s why I think Reagan took the job because she knows it a big project and something she can make real change on. So just seeing some of the things already that have changed and some of the conversations that I’ve been a part of she’s one of the best that there is out there and I think a perfect person that is out there. So I’m really excited to see where she takes the league and how all the individual markets benefit under her leadership.”

Turning to the Riveters themselves, again the team is a nearly entirely new edition compared to last year’s model as international players, players from the PWHPA, and players from other PHF teams all ended up on the Metropolitan roster.  Alex Azzi asked a question about whether team culture survived the changes or was new:

“Every year is a little different no matter how many people returning you have or not,” Packer began. “I think that overall though it’s a completely different environment in a lot of ways and in a lot of ways I think that’s a good thing. I think that the biggest difference that you notice is the professionalism and the accountability that is in the room. We have a lot of players who have a great deal of experience internationally, professionally in other leagues, at the collegiate level.”

Packer defined what the players were bringing in the door that contributed to the culture but it also meshed with the cultural expectations coming from outside as well:

“And we’re on the ice four days a week, we’re in the gym three days a week, we have access to a lot more resources and things like this so just overall the bar has been raised from an expectations standpoint and with that the culture shifts in the room, it’s more competitive and it’s just been a really special thing to be a part of,” Packer said.

Packer had more to say about the changes including in response to two questions about what was exciting her about the upcoming season. The first by TXHT led her to single out the team’s new bench boss, Hovi, and in doing so posited a domino effect that can follow from coaching choices in the league:

“She’s [Hovi’s] a huge asset and resource and just elevates the bar of what our coaches should be and how their background should look,” Packer said. “We’ve learned a lot already in a short period of time focusing on…I think sometimes they get lost in translation between different levels of play and things like that, so just bolstering coaching staffs is exciting…and then as you make additions across the league in leadership positions you draw in more talented players underneath. So for me to get play with some of the players that I’m playing with this year, you know Minttu [Tuominen], Anna [Kilponen], [Amanda] Pelkey, the list goes on of the just some of the influx of talent that we have in our market and that’s exciting for me.”

A question from Armand Klisivitch led to a fascinating response from the Captain regarding what her role may be on the team this season as she lamented perhaps her role being too overstretched in the past and looked forward to the possibility of less being more:

“Just the ability on focus on different things,” Packer said in response to what excited her about the season.  “We have a lot of different weapons in the arsenal if you will. We have a lot of players that are good at specific things. If you look specifically at me looking back over the last couple of seasons, I had a lot of ice time and played in a lot of different situations that maybe took away from my ability to produce in others. So less is not always a bad thing. I think that I might get less ice team over the course of the season but that’s…I’ve got a lot of good people who are going to take opportunities that were falling on me. It’s take a lot of pressure off, it just makes it more fun and it’s a good opportunity for other players to step up and have an opportunity.”

As Packer had mentioned, the team practices four days a week, but it also practices in the morning which is a departure from other teams and previous Riveters seasons. Erica Ayala asked Coach Hovi to elaborate on how she structured those practices.

“Coming into the role I had a few things I wanted to be pretty stern about that I said that if I was to come and be in this role where we need to take the team which is maybe different direction that it was before,” Hovi said. “And there comes a point that we have to push the game forward and make the right steps and I personally having lived and being an athlete before very much aware of the toll that it takes on your body but also the demands and the responsibility that comes along when there is more financial support for players and all that comes with as I just mentioned responsibility. We want to make everyday life for the players the best it can be and I as a coach selfishly want fresh players on the ice. I don’t want them there after an eight hour work shift. Because that puts hockey being second, so I wanted to kind of shift the thinking of you know we should practice in the morning and then whoever is going to work afterwards is going to work but I’m getting them right after a good night’s sleep and they’re ready to go and they’re to focus and that way our game is getting better as well because they’re practicing at a higher level. So I kinda drew the line of we’re practicing in the morning if that is actually was an option and then having the conversations and recruiting players. It was a straightforward conversation, ‘Can you make morning practices?, ‘Oh you can’t, then this isn’t the team for you.’ It’s as simple as that and then they went elsewhere. And then the players we have are committed to being at practices and being there in the mornings and so far I’ve only received good feedback.”

Ayala asked Packer about the system as well, and the Riveters Captain called it a “huge advantage for us” while echoing some advantages Hovi mentioned including a change of focus to hockey first and players being fresher during practices.  Ayala also queried Packer about differences between American Dream and previous Rivs facilities and Packer noted the team had its own locker room, an office for coaches and a training and cool down space.  Also in response to a question from Alex Azzi regarding the skylight above the rink, Packer explained the way the sun comes into American Dream there hasn’t been a glare, and “it kinda feels like you’re playing outside. A lot of us like that feel.”

It will be interesting to see what these changes lead to in terms of performance in the regular season and beyond.

    2022-23 Preview

    3 Questions:

What are the Riveters this season?

I remember asking this question heading into last season. It was hard to pinpoint what the Riveters could be. During the bubble in Lake Placid, they were brilliant. They unfortunately didn’t get to participate in the playoffs, where who knows how far they could have gone. Flip to the 2021-22 season, it’s still hard to figure out what the Riveters are as a team. There were stretches where they were excellent and couldn’t be stopped; then came the times where they would have losing streaks. Specifically a 5 game losing streak in the middle of the season, and losing 4 of their last 6 games at the end of the year. So heading into this season, is it going to be more of the same or will their be some consistency in their future? Personally, I think their new additions to the team will help bring that stability they really need.

Who will emerge as the number 1 goalie?

We have new goalies this year for the Riveters. Gone are Sonjia Shelly and Brooke Wolejko and in are the newcomers Rachel McQuigge and Eveliina Makinen. McQuigge played 4 years of NCAA hockey for Princeton, amassing a record of 29-22-8 with 9 shutouts, a GAA of 1.81 and a .933 save percentage. While Makinen has played in the SDHL, earning a record of 50-45-0 with 9 shutouts, a GAA of 2.58 and a .908 save percentage. Makinen also has international hockey experience having played for Finland, earning bronze medals in the World Championships in 2014-15, and 2016-17. She’s also earned a silver medal in the World’s in 2018-17, and is a 2 time Olympic bronze medal winner in 2017-18 in Pyeongchang and 2021-22 in Beijing. So the only question to ask is who is going to take over in-between the pipes for the Riveters, and will there be an adjustment period.

How will their new home rink affect their games?

Also announced this offseason was a new venue for the Riveters. They are not going to be playing games at Barnabas Health Hockey House anymore, instead opting to play at the American Dream Meadowlands Ice Rink. It’s got….. interesting sightlines to say the least. Here is a rendering of the rink:

Foot traffic wise this is excellent. Anyone who walks by and takes a couple seconds to see what’s going on, helps expose the game to as many people as possible. A concern that I would have would be during day games with the sun bearing down on the rink will make it difficult for the goalies and the players to track the puck. However, the PHF makes it work in Minnesota at TRIA Rink with their giant window. I think it would be safe to assume that the Riveters are prepared for any issues or concerns.

  • Riveters Bounce Back And Beat Whitecaps In OT

Riveters Bounce Back And Beat Whitecaps In OT

Today, the Riveters and the Whitecaps played their second game of their weekend series. The Riveters would look to bounce back from their 9-2 drubbing yesterday.

The game was a much tighter affair than yesterday. There was great defensive effort from both teams. After some great back and forth action from both teams, and both goalies turning out some great saves, it would take till about a little over the 14 minute mark to get the games first goal. The goal came from the former Riveter, Audra Richards, who nabbed her first goal of the season. Assist on the play coming from Lauren Barnes.

The lead would be short though as two minutes later, the Riveters would answer. The goal coming off the rush, a great pass coming from Mallory Rushton across the offensive zone. It would be Kendall Cornine who would slot home the shot past Leveille.

That would be how the period would end with a 1-1 tie. Penalties in the period would be three for the Whitecaps and one for the Riveters. However, neither team would be able to take advantage of that. The Whitecaps also out-shot the Riveters 11-7 in the period.

In the second period, the Riveters would come out strong again, looking to capitalize on the late goal they scored. They would be rewarded for their momentum by scoring a little over halfway through the second period. The goal would be scored by the Riveters heart and soul of the team, Madison Packer. No assists came from the play.

The Riveters would keep the lead for a brief time as three minutes later, the Whitecaps would answer back. The goal coming from Amanda Boulier; who came off a great season last year, and is continuing her good play. The assist on the play coming from Allie Thunstrom.

The period would end with both teams again tied, 2-2. The only penalty in the period came from the Riveters, and the Whitecaps could not take advantage of it. However, the Whitecaps did again out-shoot the Riveters 17-10 in the period.

In the third period, there was pretty even match-up between both teams, however it would be the Riveters who would strike first blood in the period. The goal came from Kendall Cornine again, it would be her second of the game and it came on the power play.

The Whitecaps would pour on some more pressure to get the game tied, however the Riveters defense played well and staved off any offensive chances. It would be another 14 minutes before we would get the games next goal. (Yes, both goalies were playing that great.) It would be the Whitecaps who would eventually tie the game up. The goal coming from Allie Thunstrom, who slotted home the goal past Walther’s five hole.

The late goal would push the game to overtime, and in the extra session, it would only take 35 seconds. A great shot from the circle by Rebecca Morse would elude Leveille’s glove and would give the Riveters the overtime win.

The Riveters won’t be playing next weekend as they have a bye. The next game for the Whitecaps will be against the Boston Pride on October 19 at 630p in Boston.

NWHL Game Recap – 10/12/2019 – Metropolitan Riveters v. Minnesota Whitecaps

    Metropolitan Riveters (0-1-0 0pts) v. Minnesota Whitecaps (0-0-0 0pts)

    Game Recap:

After raising their Isobel Cup Banner the Minnesota Whitecaps went right to work against the visiting Metropolitan Riveters as Jonna Curtis would throw a centering pass in front of the net, but it would deflect off of a Riveters and through the legs of goaltender Sam Walther to give the Whitecaps the 1-0 lead 49 seconds into the game. However, the Riveters would respond as Kate Leary would take advantage of a loose puck in the crease and would bank it into the net past Amanda Leveille to to tie the game at one a piece. The Riveters would not stop there as Cailey Hutchison would feed Rebecca Morse in the slot area and Morse would get the puck past a sprawling Leveille to give the Riveters the 2-1 lead, but the Whitecaps would respond as Jonna Curtis would get a bouncer past Walther to tie the game up at two a piece and her second of the game. Then on a 5 on 3 advantage for the Whitecaps Allie Thunstrom would get the puck past Walther to give the Whitecaps the 3-2 lead going into the first intermission.

In the second period the Whitecaps would respond 57 seconds into the period while shorthanded as Nicole Schammel would score her first career NWHL goal to make it 4-2. Then while playing 4 on 4 Meaghan Lorence would score her first of the season off of a rebound to give the Whitecaps a 5-2 lead. Lorence would strike again, this time while shorthanded to give the Whitecaps the 6-2 lead and would end Sam Walther’s night as the Riveters head coach Ivo Mocek would have no choice but to pull Walther and put in Dana DeMartino. The Whitecaps would not slow down though while on the powerplay Jonna Curtis would net her third of the game to complete the hat trick and give the Whitecaps the 7-2 lead.

In the third period Jonna Curtis would be at it again as she would tuck the puck past an already down Dana DeMartino to score her fourth goal of the game and widen the Whitecaps lead to six. Then later in the period Sydney Baldwin would score her first of the season with a beautiful rip from the faceoff circle to make it 9-2 Whitecaps. After a late rush by the Riveters the Whitecaps would hold their ground and keep the Riveters off the board to secure the 9-2 victory to open their 2019-20 season.

NWHL Game Recap – 10/5/2019 – Boston Pride v. Metropolitan Riveters

    Boston Pride (0-0-0 0pts) v. Metropolitan Riveters (0-0-0 0pts)

    Game Recap:

The Metropolitan Riveters kick off their 2019-20 NWHL season as they host the Boston Pride in their home opener. The Riveters would start out by getting a few shots, but nothing difficult for rookie goaltender Lovisa Selander. Then Cassie Dunne would be called for tripping to give the Pride their first powerplay opportunity, and while they would not score, the Pride would use it to turn the tide and put the momentum on their side. The Pride would take it to the Riveters but Sam Walther was up to the task. However, late in the first period Jillian Dempsey would get one past Walther to give the Pride a late 1-0 lead to go into the first intermission with.

In the second period the Riveters would play with some more hustle in their game, and it would almost pay off early in the period as Bulbul Kartanbay would almost get the puck past Selander but a little puck luck was on the goalie’s side. However, that would not deter the Riveters as Kendall Cornine would score moments later to tie the game at one a piece. The Pride would force another penalty against the Riveters, but would be unsuccessful for a third consecutive time.

In the third period it would be a penalty filled affair as the Riveters would have two 5 on 3 powerplay opportunities while the Pride would only have one of their own. The Riveters would convert on the back end of their first two woman advantage as Madison Packer would tip in a Colleen Murphy point blast to take the 2-1 lead. However, the Riveters would begin to falter and the Pride would pounce as they would get goals from Tori Sullivan, Dempsey (her second of the game), and McKenna Brand to lead the Pride to a 4-2 victory to start their season.

    2019-20 Preview:

Heading into the 2019-20 NWHL season the Metropolitan Riveters will have familiar leaders in Rebecca Morse, Madison Packer, and Lexi Slattery along with new faces like Collen Murphy (played for the Connecticut Whale last season), BulBul Kartanbay, Cailey Hutchison, and Sam Walther to help round out this season’s squad.
