  • NHL and NWHL News and Notes: September 20th, 2018

     

    These are your NHL and NWHL news and notes for September 20th, 2018.

    In NHL preseason action last night, there were eight games scheduled.

    • The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 6-1 at PNC Arena. Hurricanes forward Martin Necas, the No. 12 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, scored a goal in the contest.
    • The youth movement in Detroit has begun and the focus of a Detroit Red Wings rebuild is centered around Red Wings forward, Dylan Larkin.  Two recent Detroit draft picks teamed with Larkin for the overtime victory, winning 3-2, against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Little Caesars Arena.  This was Detroit’s preseason opener.
    • The St. Louis Blues defeated the Minnesota Wild in a contest that took place in Des Moines, Iowa.  Des Moines is the location for the Wild’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Iowa Wild.  St. Louis went on to win the game 3-2 after scoring two goals in 27 seconds in the final five minutes of the contest.

    In NHL and NWHL news…

    • Montreal’s Maxi Domi had a hearing scheduled for 12:30pm ET for a roughing and punch to an unsuspecting opponent last night against Florida’s Aaron Ekblad
    • At 3:40pm EST, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety announced that Max Domi has been suspended for the remainder of the pre-season.

    • Former New York Rangers, Atlanta Thrashers, and Winnipeg Jets goalie Ondrej Pavelec announced his retirement today.
    • In NWHL News, the Metropolitan Riveters announced from NHL player, Randy Velischek, as the new Head Coach.
    • Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada released his weekly “31 Thoughts” podcast with Henrik Zetterberg as a guest.

    Here are your NHL and NWHL News and Notes for September 19th, 2018

    • Ilya Kovalchuk recorded an assist in his Los Angeles Kings debut last night with a 4-3 loss to the Arizona Coyotes at Staples Center in a split-squad game between the two teams. Lawson Crouse of the Coyotes scored the game-winning goal with 1:18 left.  Kovalchuk, who played in Kontinental Hockey League the last five seasons, signed with the Kings on July 1, recorded the assist on Dustin Brown’s power-play goal at 11:05 in the third period to tie the game a 3-3.
    • Alex Galchenyuk scored two goal to give the Arizona Coyotes a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in the other split-squad game between the two teams at Gila River Arena.  Richard Panik and Vinnie Hinostroza scored in the game as well, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson recorded three assists for the Coyotes.  Coyotes goalie, Antti Raanta recorded 18 saves in 39:53 of on ice time and Hunter Miska recorded nine saves during the third period. Jeff Carter recorded the two goals for the Kings.
    • John Tavares recorded two goals and an assist in his Toronto Maple Leafs debut, giving Toronto a 4-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators at Kraft Hockeyville Canada.  Mitch Marner recorded a goal and two assists. Toronto goalies Curtis McElhinney and Garret Sparks made a combined 33 saves for the Maple Leafs.  Ottawa goalies Mike Condon and Marcus Hogberg recorded 26 saves.
    • The Boston Bruins defeated the Washington Capitals 5-2 at Capital One Arena Monday night.  Zach Senyshyn recorded two goals for the Bruins, scoring at 8:56 in the second period and again at 19:33.  Matt Niskanen brought the Capitals within two, scoring a power-play goal 1:44 into the third period, but Sean Kurlay scored an empty net goal with 54 seconds remaining, giving the Bruins the 5-2 lead.  Capitals goalies  Braden Holtby recorded six saves on eight shots, and Ilya Samsonov recorded nine saves on 11 shots in relief.

  • NHL and NWHL News and Notes: September 18th, 2018

     

    Here are your news and notes covering the NHL and the NWHL for September 18th.

    In preseason action for September 17th:

    • The Montreal Canadiens defeated the New Jersey Devils, 3-1 at Bell Centre.
      Jesperi Kotkaniemi, the third pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, scored in his Montreal Canadiens debut in the third goal in 1:32 at the 4:40 mark of the third period. Victor Mete tied the game at 1-1 at the 3:08 mark and at the 4:11 mark, Charles Hudon gave Montreal the 2-1 lead. Antti Niemi started for the Canadiens and in 30:56 of ice time, recorded eight saves.
    • The New York Rangers defeated the New Jersey Devils in overtime on Neal Pinok’s goal.  Pinok scored at 1:20 into the overtime period, which gave the Rangers a 4-3 victory over the Devils on Monday night at Prudential Center.  This win gave Rangers head coach David Quinn his first after he was hired on May 23 from Boston University.
    • Filip Forsberg scored three goals to give the Nashville Predators at 5-3 win in their second contest of the day against the Florida Panthers at BB&T Center.  In the first contest, the Predators won 5-0.  Forsberg scored his third goal with an empty net goal with 14 seconds left in the contest.  Kevin Fiala and Ryan Johansen also scored for the Predators.  Predators goalie Pekka Rinne registered 12 saves on 13 shots in 29:35 of on ice time.

    In other preseason action last night:

    Thursday September 13th, 2018 was an exciting day in the world of hockey. Here’s the biggest news that took place and some notes about them:

    Carolina Hurricanes announced Justin Williams as their new captain. Justin Faulk and Jordan Staal will be Williams’ alternate captains.

     

     

    Also the Hurricanes announced that Victor Rask will be out indefinitely due to a hand injury he suffered in his kitchen.

    Tyler Seguin resigns with the Dallas Stars for 8 years with a $9.85 million AAV. Also the Dallas Stars announced in the coolest way possible as seen below:

     

    Elliotte Freidman of “Hockey Night in Canada” breaks down the new Seguin contract which kicks in July 1st, 2019 below:

    Arthur Staple of “The Athletic” put out an amazing article today on New York Islanders goalie Robin Lehner as he opens up about his battles with addiction and bipolar diagnosis.

     

    In NWHL news, it was announced that four more players signed with teams today. Two players signed with the Minnesota Whitecaps, and one each with the Metropolitan Riveters and Connecticut Whale.

    And speaking of the Whitecaps, it was announced today that TRIA will be the official healthcare provider for the team and will feature an all female medical staff.

     

    Erik Karlsson traded to the San Jose Sharks by the Ottawa Senators in a massive trade.

    And lastly here are the two conditions in regards to the Conditional Draft Picks potentially going to Ottawa:

    Lastly, after the Karlsson trade, the Senators announced that Jean-Gabriel Pagaeu is out potentially for 4 to 6 months due to surgery to repair his Achilles’tendon, per reported by Renaud Lavoie.
