Washington Capitals v. New York Rangers – 1p ET
At Madison Square Garden the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers would faceoff for the second time in 24 hours, and in the first period Artemi Panarin and Alexis Lafreniere would score in the opening minute and closing minute respectively to give the Rangers the 2-0 lead. Then in the second period TJ Oshie would score to get the Caps on the board, but it wouldn’t be enough as it would be a scoreless third period for the Rangers to defeat the Capitals 2-1 and split the weekend series.
Detroit Red Wings v. Toronto Maple Leafs – 730p ET
In Toronto, the Maple Leafs and Red Wings faced off in an Original Six battle and after a scoreless first, Toronto took the 1-0 lead when Pontus Holmberg scored his second of the year but then Detroit tied the game with Dylan Larkin’s 17th of the year. Mitch Marner then scored his 18th of the year to put Toronto back in the lead. In the third, Daniel Sprong scored his 11th of the year to even the score once more but then Andrew Copp’s eighth of the year put Detroit in the lead. Then, Lucas Raymond scored an empty net goal to give the Red Wings the 4-2 win over the Maple Leafs.
And the NHL also, for better or for worse, unveiled the jerseys for the 2024 All Star Game.
The jerseys were created in collaboration with Justin Bieber and Drew House.

New York Rangers v. Washington Capitals – 1p ET
In Washington DC for the first game of a home and home back to back series the Capitals would play host to the New York Rangers for what would also be the first game of a 16 game slate in the NHL, and in the first period Adam Fox would open the scoring for the Rangers, but Anthony Mantha would score to tie the game at one for the Caps. In the second period Fox would net his second of the game for the Rangers to take the 2-1 lead. Then in the third period Nic Dowd and TJ Oshie would score to give the Capitals the 3-2 victory over the Rangers.
In Buffalo the Sabres would take on the Vancouver Canucks, and after a scoreless first period Sam Lafferty would score the lone goal of the game to give the Canucks the 1-0 victory over the Sabres. Thatcher Demko would stop all 26 shots faced for the shutout victory while Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen would stop 22 out of 23 shots faced in a valiant effort for the Sabres.
In Ottawa the San Jose Sharks would come to town to take on the Senators, and in the first period Claude Giroux and Thomas Chabot would score for the Sens for the 2-0 lead, but Anthony Duclair would score to get the Sharks back within one. In the second period Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Kevin Labanc would score to give the Sharks the 3-2 lead, but Brady Tkachuk and Drake Batherson would score for the Sens to reclaim the lead. Then in the third period Filip Zadina would score to tie the game at four for the Sharks, but Vladimir Tarasenko would score with five seconds left in regulation to give the Senators the 5-4 victory over the Sharks.
In Florida the Panthers would take on the New Jersey Devils, and in the first period Alexander Holtz and Jesper Bratt would score to give the Devils the 2-0 lead. In the second period Erik Haula would score to give the Devils the three goal lead, but Sam Reinhart would score to get the Panthers on the board. Then in the third period John Marino would score to give the Devils the 4-1 victory over the Panthers.
Pittsburgh Penguins v. Carolina Hurricanes – 7p ET
In Carolina the Hurricanes would take on the Pittsburgh Penguins, and in the first period Brett Pesce and Jordan Martinook would score for the Canes to take on the 2-0 lead. Then after a scoreless second period Jake Guentzel and Bryan Rust would score to tie the game at two for the Pens to send the game to overtime. In the extra frame Pesce would net his second of the game to give the Hurricanes the 3-2 overtime victory over the Penguins.
In Columbus the Blue Jackets would host the Seattle Kraken, and in the first period Ivan Provorov would net a pair of goals for the Jackets while Jordan Eberle and Jared McCann would score for the Kraken for the 2-2 tie. In the second period Kirill Marchenko would score for the Jackets to take the 3-2 lead, but goals from Tye Kartye and Oliver Bjorkstrand would give the Kraken the 4-3 lead. Then in the third period Emil Bemstrom would score for the Jackets, but goals from McCann, Brian Dumoulin, and Eeli Tolvanen would give the Kraken the 7-4 victory over the Blue Jackets.
In Detroit the Los Angeles Kings would come visit the Red Wings, and in the first period Dylan Larkin would score for the Wings while Quinton Byfield would score for the Kings for the 1-1 tie. In the second period Larkin would net his second of the game while Robby Fabbri, Patrick Kane, and Andrew Copp would score to give the Wings the 5-1 lead. Then in the third period Pierre-Luc Dubois and Byfield would score for the Kings, but it would not be enough as the Red Wings would go on to defeat the Kings 5-3.
In Montreal for an all Canadian battle the Canadiens would take on the Edmonton Oilers, and in the first period Cole Caufield would score to give the Habs the 1-0 lead. Then after a scoreless second period Leon Draisaitl would score to tie the game at one for the Oilers to force overtime. In the extra frame Evan Bouchard would score to give the Oilers the 2-1 overtime victory over the Canadiens.
In Tampa Bay the Lightning would welcome back Alex Killorn as the Anaheim Ducks come to town, and after a scoreless first period Frank Vatrano would score for the Ducks, but Victor Hedman would score and Steven Stamkos would net a pair of goals to give the Bolts the 3-1 lead. Then in the third period Calvin de Haan and Brandon Hagel would score to give the Lightning the 5-1 victory over the Ducks.
In Toronto for Hockey Night in Canada the Maple Leafs would go to battle with the Colorado Avalanche, and in the first period Max Domi, Morgan Rielly, and Timothy Liljegren would score to give the Leafs the 3-0 lead. In the second period Jonathan Drouin and Mikko Rantanen would score to get the Avs back within one. Then in the third period Andrew Cogliano, Nathan MacKinnon, and Ross Colton would score to give the Avalanche the 5-3 comeback victory over the Maple Leafs.
In Winnipeg the Jets would take on the Philadelphia Flyers, and in the first period Cam Atkinson would score to give the Flyers the 1-0 lead. Then in the second period Atkinson would net his second of the game to give the Flyers the 2-0 victory over the Jets. Samuel Ersson would stop all 35 shots faced to earn the shutout.

Nashville Predators v. Dallas Stars – 8p ET
In Dallas the Stars would play host to the Nashville Predators, and after a scoreless first period Jeremy Lauzon and Tommy Novak would score to give the Preds the 2-0 lead. Then in the third period Jani Hakanpaa, Wyatt Johnston, and Matt Duchene would score for the Stars, but goals from Ryan O’Reilly, Filip Forsberg, Gustav Nyquist, and Juuso Parssinen would give the Predators the 6-3 victory over the Stars.
In Minnesota the Philadelphia Flyers would come to town to take on the Wild, and after a scoreless first period Marcus Johansson would open the scoring for the Wild, but Joel Farabee would score to tie the game at one for the Flyers. In the third period Ryan Hartman and Matt Boldy would score to give the Wild the 3-1 lead, but goals from Tyson Forester and Owen Tippett would tie the game at three and force overtime for the Flyers. Then in the extra frame while on the powerplay Farabee would get his second of the game to give the Flyers the 4-3 victory over the Wild.

Ottawa Senators v. Buffalo Sabres – 7p ET
In Buffalo, the Sabres hosted the Senators and in the first Buffalo took the 1-0 lead when JJ Peterka scored his 13th of the year but then Ottawa evened the score thanks to a goal from Vladimir Tarasenko. Then, Tage Thompson notched a pair to give the Sabres the 3-1 lead. In the second, Peyton Krebs scored his third of the year to give Buffalo the three goal lead. In the third, Claude Giroux scored a pair of goals to bring Ottawa within a goal but then Dylan Cozens scored an empty net goal to give the Sabres the 5-3 win over the Senators.
In Raleigh, the Hurricanes hosted the Ducks and in the first Carolina took the 1-0 lead with Brady Skjei’s seventh of the year and then Andrei Svechnikov scored his 10th of the year to put the Hurricanes up 2-0. In the second, Anaheim got on the board when Isac Lundestrom scored his first of the year but then Jordan Martinook’s third of the year put the Canes back up two. Ryan Strome then netted his fifth of the year to bring Anaheim within a goal and then a power play goal from Frank Vatrano, scoring his 20th goal of the year, evened the score at 3-3. Stefan Noesen then scored his 11th goal of the year to give Carolina the lead back and then Jack Drury’s seventh of the year gave the Canes the 5-3 lead. In the third, Seth Jarvis scored his 15th goal of the year as the Hurricanes got the 6-3 victory over the Ducks.
In the Motor City, the Red Wings hosted the Oilers and after a scoreless first and second periods, Detroit got on the board when Andrew Copp scored his sixth of the year but then Connor McDavid scored his 16th of the year to tie the game for Edmonton. Then, Zach Hyman’s 26th of the year gave the Oilers the 2-1 lead but then Olli Maatta’s second of the year tied the game for Detroit. In overtime, Darnell Nurse’s sixth of the year gave the Oilers the 3-2 win over the Red Wings.
In South Florida, the Panthers welcomed the Kings back to the Sunshine State and in the first, Los Angeles took the 1-0 lead when Trevor Moore scored his 18th of the year. In the second, Sam Bennett scored his eighth of the year to tie the game for Florida but then Drew Doughty scored a power play goal, his eighth of the year, to give the Kings the 2-1 lead. In the third, Matthew Tkachuk netted his 12th of the year to tie the game for Florida. In overtime, Sam Reinhart scored his 30th of the year on the power play as the Panthers got the 3-2 win over the Kings.
In Montreal, the Canadiens welcomed the return of the Sharks and in the first San Jose got a pair of goals when Luke Kunin scored his sixth of the year and then Fabian Zetterlund scored his 12th of the year. Then, Montreal got on the board when Brendan Gallagher scored his seventh of the year. In the second, Nikita Okhotiuk scored his first of the year to give San Jose the 3-1 lead. In the third, Mike Matheson scored his seventh of the year but the Sharks would stand pat to get the 3-2 win over the Canadiens.
In the Steel City, the Penguins welcomed the Canucks back to Western Pennsylvania and in the first, Vancouver got a pair from Brock Boeser, the second being on the power play, but then Pittsburgh got on the board when Marcus Pettersson scored his first of the year. Then, Elias Pettersson scored his 21st of the year to put the Canucks back up two. In the second, Sidney Crosby scored his 23rd of the year to bring the Pens within a goal. In the third, Sidney Crosby scored his second of the contest to tie the game for Pittsburgh. In overtime, Elias Pettersson scored his second of the night as the Canucks got the 4-3 win over the Penguins.
In Tampa, the Lightning played host for the Devils and in the first New Jersey took the 1-0 lead with Dawson Mercer’s 13th of the year but then Tampa Bay got a pair from Luke Glendening to put the Bolts up 2-1. In the second, Brayden Point’s 20th of the year put Tampa Bay up two but then Jesper Bratt scored his 15th of the year to bring the Devils within a goal. In the third, Nathan Bastian scored his second of the year to tie the game for New Jersey. In overtime, Darren Raddysh scored his third of the year as the Lightning got the 4-3 win over the Devils.
In Washington, the Kraken made the annual trek out to the Nation’s Capital to take on the Capitals and in the first, Seattle got a pair when Tye Kartye scored his seventh of the year and then Alex Wennberg also scored his seventh. In the second, Max Pacioretty scored his first goal of the year as Washington got on the board but then Justin Schultz scored his fourth of the year to give Seattle the two goal lead back. In the third, Adam Larsson scored his third of the year to give the Kraken the 4-1 win over the Capitals.
In Long Island, the Islanders hosted the Maple Leafs and in the first Kyle Palmieri scored his 10th of the year on the power play to put New York up 1-0 but then Toronto tied the contest when Bobby McMann scored his second of the year. In the second, Auston Matthews scored a pair to put Toronto up two but then New York scored a pair when Alexander Romanov scored his fourth and then Bo Horvat scored his 17th on the power play. After a scoreless third, Mathew Barzal scored his 12th of the year to give the Islanders the 4-3 victory over the Maple Leafs.
In St. Louis, the Blues welcomed the Rangers and in the first New York took the 1-0 lead when Adam Fox scored his fifth of the year but then St. Louis got a pair when Jordan Kyrou scored two, the second being on the power play, to put the Blues up 2-1. In the second, Brandon Saad scored his 10th of the year on the power play to put St. Louis up two. In the third, Jordan Kyrou got the hat trick to put St. Louis up 4-1 but then Vincent Trocheck scored on the power play to bring the Rangers within two. Then, Pavel Buchnevich scored his 13th of the year on the empty net as the Blues defeated the Rangers 5-2.
In Winnipeg, the Jets hosted the Blackhawks and after a scoreless first, Chicago took the 1-0 lead when Connor Murphy scored his second of the year. In the third, Winnipeg tied the contest when Gabriel Vilardi scored his 10th of the year and then Nikolaj Ehlers scored his 15th of the year as the Jets got the 2-1 win over the Blackhawks.
It would be home dominance in the NHL as both Philadelphia and Dallas would put in strong efforts at home for victories.

In Philadelphia Jamie Drysdale would make his Flyers debut as they host the Montreal Canadiens, and in the first period Sean Monahan and David Savard would both score to give the Habs the 2-0 lead, but Owen Tippett would strike to get the Flyers on the board and back within one. In the second period Morgan Frost would score to tie the game at two for the Flyers. Then after a scoreless third period and overtime it would be Sean Couturier with the winner in the shootout to give the Flyers the 3-2 victory over the Canadiens.
In Dallas the Stars would play host to the Minnesota Wild, and in the first period Joe Pavelski would score to give the Stars the 1-0 lead. In the second period Matt Duchene and Roope Hintz would score to grow the Stars lead to three. Then in the third period Matt Boldy and Ryan Hartman would score for the Wild, but goals from Jason Robertson, Nils Lundkvist, Tyler Seguin, and Sam Steel would give the Stars the 7-2 victory over the Wild.
It would be a high powered Tuesday in the NHL as we would be treated to ten games as we continue to process the Cutter Gauthier trade.

However, Tyler Myers would score to reclaim the three goal lead for the Canucks. Then in the third period Nelson would net his second of the game for the Isles, but Dakota Joshua would score to give the Canucks the 5-2 victory over the Islanders.

In the second period Sam Reinhart would score to give the Panthers the 2-1 lead. Then in the third period Matthew Tkachuk would score three goals for the natural hat trick to give the Panthers the 5-1 victory over the Blues.

In New York, the Canucks made the annual trek to the Garden to take on the Rangers and in the first New York took the 1-0 lead when Vincent Trocheck scored a power play goal, his 11th of the year but then Vancouver responded with a trio of goal from J.T. Miller, Nils Hoglander, and Brock Boeser to take the 3-1 lead. In the second, Artemi Panarin struck with his 26th of the year but then the Canucks got a pair when Elias Pettersson scored his 18th of the year and then Nils Hoglander netted his second of the night to give Vancouver the 5-2 lead. In the third, Vincent Trocheck scored his second of the night to bring the Blueshirts within two but Elias Pettersson scored his second of the night on the empty net as the Canucks doubled up the Rangers 6-3.
Pittsburgh Penguins v. Philadelphia Flyers – 7p ET
In Philadelphia, the Keystone State battle continued as the Flyers hosted their archrivals in the Penguins. In the first, Pittsburgh got a pair of goals when Rickard Rakell scored a power play goal, his fifth goal of the season, and then Erik Karlsson struck with his seventh of the year. Then, Philadelphia got on the board when Owen Tippett scored a power play goal of his own. In the second, Chad Ruhwedel scored his first of the season to give Pittsburgh the two goal lead back. Then, in the third, Evgeni Malkin scored his 15th of the year to give the Penguins the 4-1 win over the Flyers.
In the State of Hockey, the Stars visited the Wild and in the first, Dallas took the 1-0 when Roope Hintz scored a shorthanded goal, his 16th goal on the year. After a scoreless second, Tyler Seguin scored his 15th to put the Stars up 2-0 and then Rdek Faksa scored a shorthanded goal to put Dallas up 3-0. Then, Jason Robertson sealed the game with his 14th of the year as the Stars got the 4-0 shutout victory over the Wild.
Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of January 1st through 7th.
First Star – Sam Reinhart (C – FLA)
Sam Reinhart would find himself earning Three Star of the Week honors for the fourth time this season, and his second time as First Star after recording five goals and an assist for six points in 3 games played for the Florida Panthers. To open up his week Reinhart would score a goal in a 4-1 victory over Arizona on Jan. 2nd, and then on Jan 4th he would record a goal and an assist in a 4-1 victory over Vegas. To close out the week Reinhart would record a hat trick in an 8-4 victory over Colorado on Jan. 6th. Reinhart would also be named to the 2024 All Star game as the Panthers representative.

Second Star – Martin Jones (G – TOR)
Martin Jones would go a perfect 3-0-0 with a .976 save percentage, a 0.66 goals against average, and one shutout for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Jones would open up his week with a 31 save effort to earn a 3-0 shutout victory over Los Angeles on Jan. 2nd, and then on Jan. 3rd he would make 27 saves in a 2-1 victory over Anaheim. Then to close out the week Jones would record 23 saves in a 4-1 victory over San Jose on Jan. 6th.

Connor Hellebuyck start off January strong after being named 3rd Star for December as he would go a perfect 3-0-0 with a 1.68 goals against average, and a .937 save percentage in three games played for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Hellebuyck would start off his week with 32 saves in a 4-2 victory over Tampa Bay on Jan. 2nd. Then on Jan 4th he would make 27 saves in a 2-1 victory over San Jose, and then to close out his week Hellebuyck would record 15 saves in a 6-2 victory over Arizona on Jan. 7th.

In Chicago, the Blackhawks hosted the Flames and in the first Colin Blackwell scored his second of the year to put Chicago up 1-0 but then Nazem Kadri scored his 12th of the year to even the score. In the second, Andrew Mangiapane scored his eighth of the year on the power play to put the Flames up 2-1 but then a pair of goals from Philipp Kurashev and Nikita Zaitsev put Chicago back up a goal. In the third, Colin Blackwell scored his second of the night to put the ‘Hawks up two but then Nazem Kadri scored his second of the night. However, the Blackhawks held on to get the 4-3 win over the Flames.
In the Nation’s Capital, Washington welcomed Los Angeles for the lone time on the season. In the third, Trevor Zegras scored his second of the night to even the score for the Ducks but then Michael Rasmussen scored his ninth of the year to give the Red Wings the 3-2 win over the Ducks.

The Chicago Blackhawks and Pittsburgh Penguins would make a trade.
The Blackhawks would acquire forward Rem Pitlick.
The Penguins would acquire a Conditional 2026 7th Round Pick.
The Penguins have acquired a conditional seventh-round draft pick in the 2026 NHL Draft from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for forward Rem Pitlick.
The acquisition of the pick gives the Penguins nine selections in the 2026 NHL Draft.

Calgary Flames v. Philadelphia Flyers – 1p ET
In Philadelphia the Flyers would honor their founder and original owner Ed Snider as they took on the Calgary Flames, and after a scoreless first period both teams would trade goals as Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar would score for the Flames while Morgan Frost and Sean Couturier would strike for the Flyers for the 2-2 tie. Then in a very feisty third period Travis Konecny would score shorthanded to give the Flyers the 3-2 victory over the Flames.
In Colorado the Avalanche would host the Florida Panthers for an afternoon matinee, and in the first period the Panthers would pounce with a goal from Carter Verhaeghe and a pair of goals from Sam Reinhart for the 3-0 lead. In the second period Cale Makar, Josh Manson, and Valeri Nichushkin would score for the Avs to tie the game at three in the opening five minutes of the period, but Oliver Ekman-Larsson would score to retake the lead for the Panthers. Then in the third period Jonathan Drouin would strike to tie the game at four for the Avs, but Reinhart would complete the hat trick, Kevin Stenlund and Matthew Tkachuk would score, and Verhaeghe would net his second of the game to give the Panthers the 8-4 victory over the Avalanche.
In Boston the Bruins would play host to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and in the first period Brayden Point would strike to give the Bolts the 1-0 lead, but goals from Trent Frederic and Charlie McAvoy would give the B’s the 2-1 lead. In the second period both teams would record a pair of goals as Nikita Kucherov and Point would strike for the Bolts, and Frederic and David Pastrnak would score for the B’s to keep the one goal lead. Then in the third period Morgan Geekie, Jake DeBrusk, and Charlie Coyle would score to give the Bruins the 7-3 victory over the Lightning.
In Columbus the Blue Jackets would take on the Minnesota Wild, and in the first period Cole Sillinger would open the score for the Jackets, but Matt Boldy would score to tie the game at one. In the second period both Sillinger and Boldy would net their second goals of the game to keep the game tied up at two. Then in the third period Sillinger would score to complete the hat trick and give the Jackets the 3-2 lead, but Marcus Johansson would score to tie the game at three for the Wild to force overtime. In the extra frame Marco Rossi would strike to give the Wild the 4-3 victory over the Blue Jackets.
In Montreal for Hockey Night in Canada the Canadiens would play host fellow Original Six member the New York Rangers, and in the first period Brendan Gallagher would score to give the Habs the 1-0 lead. In the second period Sean Monahan and Joel Armia would score to give the Habs the 3-0 lead, but goals from Vincent Trocheck and Artemi Panarin would get the Rangers back within two. Then in the third period Adam Fox would score to tie the game at three for the Rangers to force overtime. After a scoreless extra five minutes of action it would be Cole Caufield with the winner in the shootout to give the Canadiens the 4-3 victory over the Rangers.
In New Jersey the Vancouver Canucks would come to town to take on the Devils, and after a scoreless first period Elias Pettersson would score and JT Miller would net a pair of goals to give the Canucks the 3-0 lead, but Colin Miller and Erik Haula would score to bring the Devils back within one. However, Conor Garland would score to give the Canucks the two goal lead before the second period ended. Then in the third period Colin Miller would net his second of the game and Brendan Smith would score for the Devils, but Pettersson’s second of the game and Dakota Joshua would score to give the Canucks the 6-4 victory over the Devils.
In Pittsburgh the Penguins would battle the Buffalo Sabres, and in the first period Alex Tuch would net his 10th of the season to give the Sabres the 1-0 lead. Then after a scoreless second Rickard Rakell would score for the Pens, but Zemgus Girgensons and Rasmus Dahlin would score to give the Sabres the 3-1 victory over the Penguins.
In San Jose the Toronto Maple Leafs would come to town to faceoff with the Sharks, and in the first period Mitch Marner would score to give the Leafs the 1-0 lead. In the second period Calle Jarnkrok would score to grow the Leafs lead to two. Then in the third period Mikael Granlund would score for the Sharks, but William Nylander would net his 20th and 21st of the season to give the Maple Leafs the 4-1 victory over the Sharks.
In Carolina the Hurricanes would take on the visiting St. Louis Blues, and in the first period Nathan Walker would score to give the Blues the first period, but Teuvo Teravainen would score to tie the game at one for the Canes. Then after a scoreless 45 minutes of hockey it would be Brayden Schenn with the winner as the Blues would get the 2-1 shootout victory over the Hurricanes.
In Dallas the Stars would face the Nashville Predators in a Central Division matchup, and in the first period Gustav Nyquist would score to give the Preds the 1-0 lead. In the second period Luke Evangelista would score to grow the Preds lead to two, but goals from Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn would tie the game at two for the Stars. Then in the third period Jason Robertson would score for the Stars, but Filip Forsberg would score a pair of goals for the Predators to defeat the Stars 4-3.
