  • News and Notes: October 15th, 2018

     

    Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, these are your news and notes for Monday, October 15th, 2018.

     

    There were three contests in the NHL yesterday.

    • Kyle Palmieri recorded two goals, his third consecutive multi-goal outing, to lift the New Jersey Devils over the San Jose Sharks with a 3-2 victory. In addition, Palmieri became the fourth player to record multi-goal games in each of his team’s first three games to kick off the regular-season campaign.

      Also in this contest, Joe Pavelski became the fifth player in NHL history to record at least 700 career points for a player drafted after the 200th overall pick.

    The Three Stars of the Week were announced earlier today:

    • The NHL Department of Player Safety had a phone hearing with Florida Panthers D Mike Matheson for his interference/unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on Vancouver Canucks F Elias Pettersson earlier today. With this hearing, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Matheson has been suspended for two games.

     

    In NWHL news:

    • The NWHL announced the Player of the Week is Lexi Bender. Bender was dominant on both sides of the ice, recording two assists in Boston’s 5-1 win over the Metropolitan Riveters. She carried plays amongst her units in almost every shift on the ice.

    • The Metropolitan Riveters will raise their 2017-18 Isobel Cup championship banner before their contest on Saturday against the Minnesota Whitecaps at 2 p.m. ET.

    Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, these are your news and notes for Friday, October 12th, 2018.

    In NHL action last night there were twelve contests.

    • The Washington Capitals were shutout by the New Jersey Devils. Kyle Palmieri scored twice to drub Washington 6-0 in the home opener for the Devils.For TXHT’s coverage for last night’s contest between Washington and New Jersey, please go here.
    • It was an eventful night for the Toronto Maple Leafs as they defeated the Detroit Red Wings 5-3. The quartet of Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Morgan Rielly, and Mitch Marner all continued their record-setting start to the season. The Maple Leafs have scored at least five goals in four straight games. The quartet also is in the top four for league scoring with a combined 44 points.TXHT has your coverage of this contest as well. For coverage, please go here.
    • Phil Kessel recorded his sixth career hat trick to lead the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 4-2 victory over the Vegas Golden Knights. This would be Kessel’s first hat trick with the Penguins. Kessel has scored at least 20 goals in the past ten seasons and is one of only five players currently playing in the NHL to achieve this feat.
    • The Montreal Canadiens were shutout by the Los Angeles Kings 3-0 last night.TXHT and Last Word on Hockey’s Armand Kilsvitch has your coverage of the contest at the following page.

    In NHL news…

    Nashville Predators Austin Watson’s 27-game suspension for domestic violence was reduced by NHL/NHLPA neutral arbitator Shyam Das to 18 games last night.

    In relation to the reduced suspension, the NHL released the following statement today:

     

    The Vancouver Canucks announced yesterday that Henrik and Daniel Sedin will have their numbers retired next season.

     

    In a pre-game ceremony in Montreal, the Canadiens honoured the 1993 Stanley Cup championship team.

     

    The Florida Panthers announced that F Micheal Haley will be away from the team to take part in the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program.

     

    In NWHL news, the NWHL returns to action tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. ET when the Buffalo Beauts faceoff against the Connecticut Whale in the Twitter Game of the Week. At 7:30 p.m., the Boston Pride faceoff against the Metropolitan Riveters.

    These are your news and notes for Thursday, October 11th, 2018…

    There were three contests in the NHL last night.

    • The Washington Capitals faced off against the Vegas Golden Knights in a rematch of last season’s Stanley Cup Final. Evgeny Kuznetsov and Alex Ovechkin would both find the scoring sheet and lead Washington to a 5-2 victory over Vegas at Capital One Arena.Ovechkin would net career goals 610 and 611 to pass Bobby Hull for 17th place on the NHL’s career goal scoring list. This would also be Ovechkin’s first multi-goal game on the season and the 121st time he has multi-goal games in his NHL career.

    • The Philadelphia Flyers went on to defeat the Ottawa Senators 7-4. Jakub Voracek had a five point contest (two goals and three assists) to establish a career high. He joined Mike Richards and Claude Giroux as the only players in the last ten years to register five points in a regular season game.

      For the Ottawa Senators, rookie Brady Tkachuk scored his first two goals of his NHL career and became the quickest among his family to score his first NHL goal.

    • The Arizona Coyotes went on to defeat the Anahiem Ducks 3-2 in a shootout. This gave Arizona their first win of the season.Coyotes goalie Antti Raanta registered 23 saves and would deny three shooters in the shootout. Raanta now owns a .922 career save percentage which is go for third-highest among goalie who have appeared in at least 100 games.

  • NHL and NWHL News and Notes: October 8th, 2018

     

    These are your News and Notes for Monday, October 8th, 2018:

     

    In the NHL there were three games that happened yesterday…

    • The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the New York Rangers 8-5 at PNC Arena. Carolina overcame four different deficits before Andrei Svechnikov registered his first goal, a game-winner, with 9:16 remaining in the third period. This was the first time the Hurricanes scored eight goal in a contest since March 13, 2017 when they defeated the New York Islanders 8-4. Carolina has registered a point in all three contests this season to extend their record to 2-0-1.Svechnikov (18 years, 195 days) became the first player born in the 2000s to score a NHL goal. He also joined the Hurricanes/Whalers history book as the third youngest player in franchise history to score their first goal. Only Jeff Skinner (18 years, 157 days) and Paul Lawless (18 years, 181 days) are the other two players.

      Yesterday’s contest also marked the first time in the history of the franchise to overcome the four different deficits and go to win the contest in any fashion. The only time this occurred last season was when the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-4 in overtime.

    • John Tavares continues to shine for the Toronto Maple Leafs as Tavares registered his first hat trick with the Maple Leafs en route to a 7-6 win in overtime over the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center. This was also Tavares’ ninth NHL career hat trick. Toronto registered three goals in the final two minutes of the contest to extend the game into the overtime frame. Morgan Reilly would score the game winner for Toronto just 19 seconds into the overtime frame.Tavares’ made Maple Leafs record book as the fourth player in the NHL modern era (since the 1943-33 season) to register a hat trick in his first three games. he Joins Miroslav Frycer, Jeff O’Neill, and current Maple Leaf teammate Auston Matthews.

      Matthews would go on to match a career-high four points in the contest (two goals and two assists), a mark he set in four-goal NHL debut on October 12, 2016.

      In a tribute ceremony before yesterday’s game, there was an emotional tribute for Chicago Blackhawks legend Stan Mikita. Mikita’s wife, Jill, was on hand for the ceremonial puckdrop.

    • The Los Angeles Kings went on to defeat the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 at Staples Center. Ilya Kovalchuk would register two assists, including on the game-winner, to reach the 400-assist milestone. This would also mark the first win on the season for the Kings.Kovalchuk returned to the NHL when he signed with Los Angeles on June 23. Kovalchuk, 35, is one of eight active players in the NHL who have played a minimum of 100 contests and then average at least one point per game.

    In NHL news…

      • The Three Stars of the Week were announced earlier today.The Third Star of the Week went to Dallas Stars goalie Ben Bishop. Bishop recorded 62 saves on 63 shot attempts (a .984 save percentage), compiling a 2-0-0 record with a 0.50 GAA. Bishop would also register one shutout, a 3-0 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on October 4. In that contest Bishop stopped all 30 shots and became the third goaltender in franchise history to earn a shutout in a season opener.

        The Second Star of the Week went to Chicago Blackhawks C Jonathan Toews. Toews currently shares the League lead in goals with five and ranks second in points with six. Chicago has earned five points out of a possible six in the season standings (2-0-1) to open up the season. Toews registered his fifth career hat trick back on October 6. When Toews accomplished that feat, he became the fifth player in Blackhawks history to complete the hat trick with an overtime goal since December 2, 2006 when Jeff Hamilton reached that milestone.

        The First Star of the Week went to Toronto Maple Leafs C Auston Matthews. Matthews currently leads the League in goals (five), tied with Jonathan Toews and leads the league in points (eight). Toronto is currently 2-1-0 (4 pts) on the season. Matthews registered his second career four-point game in Toronto’s 7-6 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday and became the seventh player in franchise history to register multiple points in the team’s first three games of the season.

      • The Philadelphia Flyers announced that James van Riemsdyk will be out five to six weeks with a lower-body injury.
      • Florida Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo will be out of action for 2-4 weeks with an MCL sprain, the team announced today
      • Columbus Blue Jackets C Brandon Dubinsky is also headed for Injured Reserve, the team announced today. Dubinsky has a strained oblique muscle that was suffered in a practice on Sunday.

     

    In NWHL news, there were two contests to happen in the NWHL yesterday:

      • First, the Buffalo Beauts went on to defeat the Connecticut Whale 4-0 at Terry Connors Ice Rink in Stamford, CT. This game featured the debut of two goaltenders, Nicole Hensley and Meeri Räisänen. Räisänen stopped 34 of the 38 shots she faced in the contest for the Whale and Nicole Hensley made 10 saves on 10 shots on goal for the Beauts.Maddie Elia would score the first two goals of the contest for the Beauts in the span of 2:31, assisted by her linemates.

        Hayley Scamurra, the 2018 NWHL Rookie of the Year, would register four points in the contest with two goals and two assists.

        Buffalo had the 2-0 advantage going into the first intermission, along with outscoring Connecticut 16-4.

      • The other contest pitted the Minnesota Whitecaps versus the Metropolitan Riveters at TRIA Rink. The Whitecaps would complete a weekend sweep of the defending Isobel Cup champions with a 3-1 win.The Whitecaps, much like Saturday’s contest, used their speed to get past the Riveters. Amanda Boulier would open up the scoring for Minnesota at 10:25 in the first period. Jenny Ryan would tie the score for the Riveters, the team’s first on the young season.

        Whitecaps Kendall Coyne Schofield had the opportunity to score on a shorthanded breakaway but would be denied by Riveters goaltender, Katie Fitzgerald. Amanda Kessel would have her own breakaway moments later for the Riveters on her way out of the penalty box, but her shot was too high.

        Jonna Curtis would give the Whitecaps the lead at 2-1 8:24 in the second period. Hannah Brandt would make it a 3-1 lead for the Whitecaps when she buried her shot off of Olympic teammate Coyne Schofield.

      • Coming up this week in NWHL action:On Saturday October 13th, the Connecticut Whale visit the Buffalo Beauts at HarborCenter at 1:30 p.m., EDT and at 7:30 p.m., EDT, the Metropolitan Riveters visit the Boston Pride at Warrior Ice Arena.
      • Your NWHL Player of the Week is Hannah Brandt of the Minnesota Whitecaps. Brandt scored a goal in each of the Whitecaps games over the weekend over the Metropolitan Riveters. Brandt gave the Whitecaps the 2-0 advantage with her goal early in the second period on Saturday and then she would score again on Sunday to give the Whitecaps a 3-1 on Sunday, as well as the weekend sweep for the NWHL’s newest team.When Brandt was informed that she was named Player of the Week, she was appreciative but felt that the spotlight and award should be shared with her coaches, staff, players, and the fans.

    These are your news and notes for Sunday, October 7th, 2018.

    There were twelve contests last night in the NHL.

    • The Chicago Blackhawks became third team in NHL history to start the season with consecutive overtime victories. The Blackhawks follow the 1984-85 Toronto Maple Leafs and 2009-10 Montreal Canadiens. Jonathan Toews completed a hat trick to secure a Chicago 5-4 win over the St. Louis Blues in overtime at Enterprise Center. Toews’ hat trick was also the fifth of his career.
      • The New Jersey Devils defeated the Edmonton Oilers 5-2 in the NHL Global Series at Gothenberg, Sweden. This was New Jersey’s first neutral site victory since March 27, 1994 when they defeated the Quebec Nordiques at Target Center in Minneapolis, MN. New Jersey’s Kyle Palmieri became the third player to score the fastest goal in an NHL game outside of North America.
      • Martin Brodeur was on hand for the ceremonial puck drop that included New Jersey’s Marcus Johansson and Edmonton’s Adam Larsson, both of whom were born in Sweden.
      • St. Louis Blues Alexander Steen appeared in his 900th NHL game. His father, Thomas Steen, played in 950 NHL games. The Steens joined only two other father/son duos for more than 900 NHL games played.

      • The San Jose Sharks have placed Joe Thornton on Injured Reserve.

    In NWHL news…

      • The Minnesota Whitecaps defeated the Metropolitan Riveters 4-0 at a sold-out TRIA Rink in St. Paul, Minnesota yesterday. Amanda Leveille, former University of Minnesota and Buffalo Beauts goalie, recorded the shutout for the Whitecaps. Katie McGovern would register the first goal for the Minnesota Whitecaps. McGovern’s goal, which was the first in team NWHL history, was registered with 2:24 left in the first period.Hannah Brandt would score the Whitecaps second goal of the contest. Riveters Amanda Kessel attempted to get the team on the board, however Leveille deflected Kessel’s shot midway through the second period. Kessel would later ring a shot off of the crossbar.

        Kate Schipper would make the contest a 3-0 lead for the Whitecaps 3:34 into the third period from a high shot pass from Kendall Coyne Schofield. Coyne Schofield would score the empty-net goal in the final seconds of the contest.

        The Minnesota Whitecaps take on the Metropolitan Riveters again today at TRIA Rink.

    These are your news and notes covering the NHL for Thursday, October 4th, 2018.

    There was one final preseason match yesterday and that pitted the Edmonton Oilers and Cologne Sharks (Kolner Haie) which Edmonton would go on to win 4-3 in overtime in Germany.

    Last night was the kickoff for the 2018-19 NHL season and four games happened.

    • The Washington Capitals faced off against the Boston Bruins at Capital One Arena. In a pregame ceremony, the Capitals raised their Stanley Cup champions and went on to route the Bruins in a 7-0 win. TXHT has your coverage from last night’s game here.
    • The Montreal Canadiens took on the Toronto Maple Leafs at Scoatiabank Arena. Toronto would go on to defeat Montreal in a 3-2 victory in overtime. Canadiens rookie Jesperi Kotkaniemi would go on to register his frist NHL point with an assist. Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews would score the game-winner 1:01 into the overtime frame.     • The Anaheim Ducks defeated the San Jose Sharks 5-2 at SAP Center. Anaheim rookie Max Comtois scored 49 seconds into the contest, the sixth-fastest for a rookie in NHL history.
    • A new era for the Vancouver Canucks began with a decisive 5-2 win over the Calgary Flames at Rogers Place. The Canucks were playing without Henrik and Daniel Sedin since they announced their retirement last season. Canucks rookie Elias Pettersson scored his first NHL goal in this contest. With that goal, Pettersson became the third teenager to score a goal in his NHL debut.

    These are your News and Notes for Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018…

    There were no preseason contests yesterday.

    Today is the first day of the regular season in the NHL and there are four contests taking place.

    • The Washington Capitals will raise their Stanley Cup Championship banner tonight in a pre-game ceremony when they take on the Boston Bruins at Capital One Arena. TXHT has the preview of the game here.
    • The Montreal Canadiens take on the Toronto Maple Leafs, which will mark the official debut of John Tavares. Tavares joined the Maple Leafs as a free agent over the summer. For TXHT’s preview of this match-up, please check out Steve Gardiner’s game preview

    • The Calgary Flames face off against the Vancouver Canucks. For the Canucks this marks the first season without Henrik and Daniel Sedin, who retired last season, since the 1999-2000 season.
    • The Anaheim Ducks face off against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center. For the Sharks this will mark the official debut of Erik Karlsson, who joined the team after a trade

    In NHL news today:

    • The Buffalo Sabres announced that Jack Eichel has been named team captain.
    • The Washington Capitals announced that Jayson Megna has been placed on waivers.
    • Montreal Canadiens head coach Claude Julian announced that Karl Alzner and Tomas Plekanec will be healthy scratches tonight. This will end Karl Alzner’s consecutive-games played streak at 622, which is the fourth longest activer streak in the NHL and the 12th longest in NHL history.
    • The NHL announced all 31 teams opening night 23-man rosters earlier today
    • Former NWHL player and United States captain Meghan Duggan married three-time Canadian women’s gold medalist Gillian Apps two weeks ago. Duggan played for the Boston Pride and the Buffalo Beauts. Gillian Apps would play in the CWHL with the Brampton Thunder (now Markham Thunder).

  • NHL and NWHL News and Notes: October 1, 2018

     

    Here are your news and notes covering the NHL for Monday, October 1, 2018.

     

    There were four preseason contests that happened yesterday.

      • The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the San Jose Sharks with a 5-3 win at T-Mobile Arena. Tomas Nosek would score two of the Golden Knights three shorthanded goals. Max Pacioretty would also score the other shorthanded goal. Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury registered 33 saves to give Golden Knights six wins out of seven on the preseason campaign. Erik Karlsson scored his first goal for the Sharks, which were 2-for-6 on the power-play. Sharks goalie Martin Jones recorded 27 saves in the contest.
      • The Nashville Predators defeated the Carolina Hurricanes with a 5-4 in overtime at PNC Arena. Nashville’s Ryan Johansen scored the GWG 21 seconds into the overtime frame, his second of the game. Hurricanes goalie Scott Darling recorded 20 saves before leaving the game in the second period with a lower-body injury. Petr Mrazek came in for relief for Carolina and recorded 10 saves. Pekka Rinne and Juuse Saros registered 14 and 16 shots respectively for Nashville.
      • The Washington Capitals defeated the St. Louis Blues with a 5-2 victory at Capital One Arena. Washington Capitals forwards Alex Ovechkin and T.J. Oshie scored goals 49 seconds apart early in the third period. Ovechkin scored his fourth goal of the preseason 38 seconds into the third period to give Washington a 2-1 lead and then Oshie scored at 1:27. Capitals goalie Braden Holtby recorded 21 saves. Tom Wilson was given a match penalty for his hit on Blues F Oskar Sundqvist at 5:22 in the second period. There is more to come on that later.
      • The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Dallas Stars in a 6-5 victory at American Airlines Center. Colorado’s Nathan Landeskog had two goals and assist in this contest. Mikko Rantanen registered one goal and two assists, Tyson Jost and Matt Calvert each had two assists, and Colorado goalie Seymon Varlamov recorded 32 saves.

    • NHL rosters for opening night on Wednesday must be submitted by 5 p.m. ET tomorrow (October 2nd).
    • The Edmonton Oilers traded Jakub Jerabek to the St. Louis Blues for a sixth-round draft pick in 2020

     

     

    • Scott Hartnell announced his retirement today from the NHL. Hartnell played 17 seasons and registered 707 points in 1,249 games with three teams.

     

     

    • Shea Weber was announced as the 30th captain in Montreal Canadiens team history today. Paul Byron and Brendan Gallagher were also announced as the alternate captains.

     

     

    • The Toronto Maple Leafs finalized their 23-man roster (13 forwards, eight defenceman and two goalies) today.

     

     

    • 19 years ago today, the Edmonton Oilers officially retired Wayne Gretzky’s number.

     

     

    • The New York Islanders unveiled their new third jerseys today. These thirds are identical to the last few third jerseys they have had over the past few seasons.

    • The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded Connor Carrick to the Dallas Stars for a conditional seventh-round draft pick which will turn into sixth rounder if Carrick plays at least 50 games.

     

     

    • Radim Vrbata announced his retirement today from the NHL.

     

     

    • The Montreal Canadiens acquired Brett Kulak from the Calgary Flames, who will report to the Laval Rocket of the AHL. In return, the Calgary Flames, will get Matt Taormina and Rinat Valiev.

     

     

    In the NWHL, the Connecticut Whale announced that they have signed Meeri Räisänen. Räisänen, a Finnish goalie, joins Russian national team goalie Maria Sorokina to give the Whale a strong and talented goaltending tandem.

    New Jersey Devils goalie Cory Schneider will miss the season opener due to offseason hip surgery, when the Devils take on the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL Global Series game in Scandnavium, Gothenburg, Sweden Saturday, October 6.

     

    New Jersey’s Nico Hischier returned home to Sweden to prepare for the Devils final preseason game on Monday. New Jersey takes on SC Bern at PostFinance Arena in Bern, Switzerland, also a match-up for the NHL’s Global Series Challenge.

     

    On Monday, the New York Islanders will officially unveil their new alternate jerseys.

    These are your news and notes covering the NHL and the NWHL for Saturday, September 29th, 2018…

     

    In NHL preseason action last night there were seven contests that took place. Here are brief recaps on select games:

    • The Columbus Blue Jackets took on the Pittsburgh Penguins at Nationwide Arena and would win this contest 7-6. Blue Jackets Artemi Panarin (two goals and two assists), Cam Atkinson (one goal and three assists), and Zach Werenski (four assists) were the noteworthy players with points in the contest. Columbus goalie Sergei Bobrovsky recorded 23 saves.
    • The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Los Angeles Kings 2-0 at T-Mobile Arena. Vegas goalie Marc-Andre Fleury recorded 26 saves in the contest. Ryan Reaves and Brayden McNabb registered the two goals for the Golden Knights. The Kings were 0-for-5 on the power-play and the Golden Knights were 0-for-2
    • The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Detroit Red Wings with a 6-2 win at Scotiabank Arena. Toronto’s Jake Gardiner would score the first of three straight power-play goals for the Maple Leafs to give Toronto a 2-1 lead at 12:47 of the second period. John Tavares would score his fifth goal of the pre-season with a PPG at 14:58 and Patrick Marleau would score the third straight power-play goal at 15:25. Frederik Anderson would register 23 saves for Toronto.
    • The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Washington Capitals in a 5-4 overtime at Capital One Arena. Carolina’s Sebastian AHo would score the game winner 19 seconds into the overtime frame with his second goal of the contest. Hurricanes LW Teuvo Teravainen registered four points (one goal and three assists), which is 5-0-0 during the preseason thus far. Alex Ovechkin (two goals), Evgeny Kuznetsov (two assists), John Carlson (one assist), Aaron Ness (one assist), Tom Wilson (one assist), Lars Eller (one assist), Andre Burakovsky (one goal), and Jayson Megna (one goal) all registered points for the Capitals in the contest.
    • Rasmus Dahlin scored his first goal of the preseason to lift the Buffalo Sabres over the New York Islanders, 5-4, in a contest at General Motors Place in a contest that took place Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Dahlin, the first overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft, gave the the Sabres the 3-1 with that goal at 3:42 in the second period.
    • The St. Louis Blues defeated the Dallas Stars with a 3-1 win at Enterprise Center. Blues Jaden Schwartz registered one goal and two assists in the contest. Ryan O’Reilly would score 31 seconds into the second period and Schwartz scored 1:30 into the third period. Blues Vladimir Tarasenko would score the third goal, an empty-netter, at 19:53 in the third period. St. Louis was 0-for-5 on power-plays and Dallas was 0-for-3.
    • The Colorado Avalanche defeated the Minnesota Wild with a 4-3 overtime victory at Pepsi Center. Avalanche Mikko Rantanen scored a PPG 1:29 into the extra frame, which was upheld after a video review.

    The Montreal Canadiens confirmed that 18-year-old Jesperi Kotkaniemi will begin the season with the team.

    In NWHL news, there was a contest for the Champions Cup earlier today. This contest pitted the NWHL’s Isobel Cup champion, Metropolitan Riveters and the SDHL’s Luleå Hockey. The Champions Cup weighs 25 pounds and is gold and silver to represent the founding leagues of the NWHL and SDHL. The cup is engraved with “Champions Cup” in eight different languages.

    In this contest, Luleå Hockey defeated the Metropolitan Riveters at Hobey Baker Rink by the score of 4-2. Noora Tulus scored late which ended up being the difference maker in the game.

    Luleå’s Michelle Karvinen scored the first goal of the contest just 27 seconds into what was a penalty-filled second period. This lead for Luleå would be erased at the 14:16 mark of the second period with a goal by Riveters forward Kelly Nash, who is also the assistant coach at Princeton. This goal was the product of a deflected shot off of Alexa Gruschow.

    There were eight penalties that occurred during the second period but the penalty issues would continue for Luleå going into the third. With two players in the penalty box, Karvinen finished on a 2-on-1 shorthanded rush by putting the puck behind the 2018 Isobel Cup MVP Katie Fitzgerald to regain a one-goal lead. 51 seconds later, the Riveters would tie the game again at 2 with a goal from Riveters newcomer Kristin Lewicki.

    Noora Tulus would score at 12:05 in the second to give Luleå the lead for good at 3-2. Emma Nordin would score an empty-net goal with seconds left in the game to seal the 4-2 win for Luleå.

    Michelle Karvinen was later named the MVP of the Champions Cup. For the Riveters, this marked Shelley Picard’s first as the captain. Kristin Lewicki, Alexa Aramburu, Lexi Slattery, Audra Richards, Chelsea Ziadie, and Fiona McKenna also all donned the Riveters red for the first time.

    The Riveters have only one week to begin the defense of their Isobel Cup championship following this contest. The Riveters open the season with games against the NWHL’s newest franchise, the Minnesota Whitecaps, October 6 and 7 at TRIA Rink.

     

    In other news, CSA Shows made an announcement yesterday about the Washington Capitals with one of their upcoming events.
