Game Recap – 3/6/2019 – Washington Capitals v. Philadelphia Flyers

    Washington Capitals (38-21-7 83pts) v. Philadelphia Flyers (32-26-8 72pts)

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals would continue their road trip with a short train trip to Philadelphia to take on the Flyers, and in the early stages of the game both teams would share chances in a track style back and forth, but it would be the Capitals striking first as Alex Ovechkin would feed the puck to Tom Wilson while on his knees for Wilson’s 19th goal of the season. Then later in the period while going down the wing Brett Connolly would rip a shot past Brian Elliott that would seem to have hit the crossbar, but during the TV timeout the play would be reviewed in Toronto and deemed a goal as Connolly got the puck past Elliott and hit the goal cam with the puck completely crossing the line thus giving the Capitals a 2-0 lead going into the second intermission.

To start the second period the Capitals would bring the domination as early in the period while on their first powerplay of the game it would be an Ovechkin snipe from the circles that would go five hole on Elliott. Then mere minutes later it would be Andre Burakovsky with a beautiful snipe to chase Elliott from the net and bring in Cam Talbot, but the Capitals would welcome him with that same domination as Nicklas Backstrom would net the first shot against Talbot to make this a 5-0 game. The Capitals would primarily control the play the rest of the period, but with 11.8 seconds left in the period Philippe Myers would score his first career goal to get the Flyers on the board.

To start the third period it would be the Flyers to get on the board ten seconds into the period as Claude Giroux would net his 20th of the season. The Flyers would pick up the play after scoring their second goal and as a result the Capitals would start chasing the game to which would then lead to an Andrew MacDonald point shot to get tipped by Scott Laughton to make this a 5-3 game, and have the Flyers trail the Capitals by only two goals.

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Get a good start

    • Don’t fall behind against this young team, they work hard and never give up. Their young guns will make you pay.

    2. Use your speed and cycle well.

    • Let the speed be the driving force and the cycle game take away their speed. Make the Canucks young players play defence.

    3.  Strong defensive game

    • Good outlet passes and board work. Play smart with the sticks and break the Canucks cycles down low.

  • Whale And Riveters Set For Playoff Rematch

Whale And Riveters Set For Playoff Rematch

The first playoff game for the NWHL this year will take place on Thurday March 7th at 7p EST. It features the two teams that finished fourth and fifth in the season standings. Finishing fourth place, and the host of this playoff match up, is the Metropolitan Riveters. Unfortunately, finishing last in the standing is the Connecticut Whale. The game will take place at the RJW Barnabas Health Hockey House.

Last year these two teams met in the Isobel Cup semi final game which saw the Riveters win that game, and would go on to win the championship that year, beating the Buffalo Beauts in the finals.

A quick look back at that game, the goalie match up last year was Katie Fitzgerald for the Riveters, and Sydney Rossman for the Whale. The Riveters jumped out to a quick lead, after a minute into the game, the goal coming from Rebecca Russo. This got the crowd going and the Riveters dominated play. However at the end of the first period, the Riveters only had a 1-0 lead.

In the second period, it was more of the same, dominance from the Riveters and eventually a breakthrough for them, as Erika Lawler would net a goal a little over halfway through the second period.

Unfortunately in the third period, the wheels came off from the Whale. About halfway through, when the Whale were on the power play, Madison Packer got a breakaway and scored while short handed. This really deflated any possible notion of a Whale comeback, because shortly after, the Riveters would get two more goals in quick fashion. Goals coming from Bray Ketchum and Kelly Nash. Rossman would depart from the game after the Ketchum goal and Keira Goin would finish the game. It ended with the final score being 5-0 in favor of the home team.

Boxscore for this game can be found here:

Fast forward a year later and both teams are again meeting in the playoffs. Perfect time for some revenge? Possibly. We do know that the Riveters will be starting Katie Fitzgerald on Thursday, info provided from Mike Murphy.

How have the Whale fared against the Riveters this season? Decently. Their record against them is 2-1-1 and they are also 1-0-1 against them in Newark, NJ.

The last time that the Whale and the Riveters matched up was on January 6th, a 6-3 victory for the Riveters. However it was Maria Sorokina in net for the Riveters, and the previous loss to the Riveters was back on November 25th, a shootout loss with Kimberly Sass in net.

Why bring that up? Well, the last time the Whale faced off against the Riveters with Katie Fitzgerald in net was all the way back on December 2nd, which was a 4-0 victory for the Whale in Pittsburgh; and the first game that these two teams squared off against each other was all the way back on November 18th, a 2-1 victory for the Whale with, you guessed it, Katie Fitzgerald in net. So this year, the Whale are a perfect 2-0 against Katie Fitzgerald.

Will the Whale continue to be the kryptonite against Katie Fitzgerald? Or will Fitzgerald go on another spectacular run in the playoffs like she did last year, posting two shutouts?

    3 Players to Watch

Audra Richards: The Minnesota native and Riveters rookie has had an incredible year for them, scoring 8 goals! 6 of her 8 goals have come against the Whale, including a hat trick! She is the only player in the NWHL to record a hat trick this season!

Katerina Mrázová: The Czech international, and Whale rookie has put up some stellar numbers this year, she leads the team in points with 12 (6g, 6a). 6 of her 12 points on the year have come against the Riveters (4g, 2a).

Shannon Doyle: The Whale blue liner has had a great year this season. She is one of the most consistent players for them. Against the Riveters, she has 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points. Both of her goals against the Riveters have been incredible, they include a game winner in the final minute and a sick deke against Katie Fitzgerald.

Mitch Marner – Amazing player and even better human

Mitch Marner has come into this season and taken his game to another level – Offensively and Defensively. Marner just doesn’t want to be the best on one side of the puck, he wants his overall game to be the best and that’s exactly what the Toronto Maple Leafs need. But for the Maple Leafs and their fans – LeafsNation – this is not the most exciting part about their budding superstar.

Everyone who watched Hockey Night in Canada last night was treated to the appreciation and jersey retirement of Jarome Iginla – one of the greatest Ambassadors for Hockey, If not the greatest. Iginla stood for more than just what he did on the ice, he took time for people and fans, making their days better.

Mitch Marner is becoming one of those Ambassadors. We’ve seen some great ones of the years. Ambassadors are the people who stand for more than hockey and reach out to the community. We will look at some of Mitch’s work in a bit but for now, let’s look at the history of some Ambassadors. Here’s a few for your interest.

Alex Ovechkin – There was a story told while Washington was in Edmonton in 2017 that Alex Ovechkin and a few teammates were walking down the street and Ovechkin saw this homeless man sitting on the corner. The man looking like he was freezing, Ovechkin stopped took off his winter coat and hat and gave it to the man.

Jarome Iginla –  This story was told of Iggy in another post of mine but it should be told again. Iginla met a few guys during one of the Olympics, he struck up a conversation with them and eventually found they had been sleeping in their cars just so they could come to watch him and the rest of the Canadian Team play. Iginla asked to be excused from the table and proceeded to books accommodations for all the men for the duration of the Olympics on him.

Iginla’s Actions Inspire Josh Morrissey – a New Generation of Hockey Players

These are just two in a list of so many that should be inserted here.

    • Teemu Selanne
    • Henrik and Daniel Sedin
    • Mike Fisher
    • Derek Boogaard
    • Josh Bailey
    • Zach Parise
    • Nicklas Lidstrom
    • James Wisniewski
    • Cam Ward
    • Dustin Brown
    • Shawn Matthias
    • Brad Richards
    • Ryan Miller
    • Derek Roy
    • Andrew Ference
    • Carey Price
    • Jason Spezza
    • Shane Doan
    • Joe Pavelski
    • Vincent Lecavalier

just to give you an idea. Mitch Marner is becoming one of these guys who make the game better. Most of these guys have worn a Captain’s C  or the Alternate A, because of the leadership they have shown on and off the ice. This has been Mitch Marner just this season:

Marner give an Autographed stick to a young kid after seeing sign

Marner has a Hero in a fan battling Leukemia

Mitch Marner makes valentines special for girl

Mitch Marner blessed to be in the position he’s in. Will use it to give back

Marner gifts GTHL team with new sticks

    Just found this one.

Marner, as you can tell, doesn’t see himself as a star but as someone who is blessed to be making a living doing something he loves and wants to use every last opportunity to give back to the Fans and especially those who are less fortunate. Marner is another classic example of someone who excels in what he does on the ice, but what defines him is what he does before games, after games and even during his time off.

The phrase coined a few times in the last few weeks on TSN, Sportsnet and other sports networks when discussing Mitch Marner was this….

“Mitch Marner, Amazing player and even better human being.”

and the statement couldn’t be truer as Marner truly pushes himself into a category of Ambassadors that stood in the game of Hockey for kindness and generosity. He is beginning the journey that will set him up like some of the players that have gone before him.

Think of what everyone said about Jarome Iginla last night. He gave everything on the ice and even more of himself as a human because that’s truly who Iggy was. A better Human.

Marner is building a legacy as a Toronto Maple Leaf. A legacy that will keep him in the hearts of Leafs fans for the rest of his career and beyond. Take notes young players, this is how you become a true professional.

  • Ted Lindsay – A Legend and Pioneer of Hockey Passes away

Ted Lindsay – A Legend and Pioneer of Hockey Passes away

Today we at TXHT are sad to announce the passing of Legend and Pioneer Ted Lindsay at the age of 93. Let’s take a look back and remember the amazing career on the ice and off the ice that Lindsay left as a legacy for the Hockey World.

“The Production Line”  that’s what they nicknamed the line of  Center Sid Abel, Right Winger Gordie Howe and of course Left Wing Ted Lindsay. This is where Ted Lindsay became one of the NHL most prolific players. Small in stature compared to most players in the league, His fierceness on the ice led to the Nickname “Terrible Ted” becoming a mainstay throughout his career. His style of play led the NHL to create penalties for elbowing and kneeing.

In the 1949–50 season, he won the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s leading scorer. The Red Wings would go on to win the Stanley Cup that year. Over the next five years, Lindsay helped Detroit win three more championships. Lindsay was the first player to lift the Stanley Cup and skate it around the rink, starting the tradition.

    NHLPA:

Ted Lindsay, had attended a meeting as a representative of the Detroit Red Wings, Where he would find out that other sports players had been treated much better. Lindsay made it his goal to make sure players had better conditions. in the 1950’s superstars were only making $25,000 ($223,000 in 2019 dollars), and after they retired they were hung out to dry.

Despite the fight back, Ted Lindsay and the Doug Harvey eventually founded the NHLPA – National Hockey League Player’s Association – which eventually change the scape of the how NHL players were treated.

Ted Lindsay was a man who left a strong legacy and who helped shape the game into what it is today. We appreciate his life and the legacy he left behind. Today we salute Ted Lindsay. Rest in Peace.
