PWHL Stars of the Week – Shelton Ends Season Strong

Today the Professional Women’s Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of April 29th through May 5th.

First Star – Ella Shelton (D – NY)

    • Shelton is named first star of the week for the first time this season after leading all PWHL players in scoring last week. In two games played, Shelton had six points (2G, 4A), leading PWHL New York to two straight regulation victories. The 26-year-old had back-to-back three-point efforts, matching her season-high from January 14. First, on April 30 against Ottawa, Shelton had a goal and two assists — all in the second frame—helping New York storm back from a 2-0 deficit en route to a 4-3 win, which secured the first overall pick in the 2024 PWHL Draft for her team. Shelton followed up that performance by again recording a goal and two assists, as New York defeated Minnesota 5-2 on May 4. Three of Shelton’s four assists last week were primary, and she added eight shots on goal, averaging nearly 25 minutes through two games. With her offensive output, Shelton took over the scoring race among all PWHL defenders, finishing the season with 21 points (7G, 14A)—three more than the next highest-scoring defender. When the PWHL regular season officially came to an end on Sunday, Shelton sat fifth in scoring in the league.

Second Star – Natalie Spooner (RW – TOR)

    • Spooner is named as one of the PWHL’s 3 Stars of the Week for the fifth time this season as the forward continued her torrid scoring pace last week. Spooner tallied four goals across two games, notching two goals in each match while clinching the game-winning goal in both. The 33-year-old kicked off her stellar week in a battle against Minnesota on May 1, as she scored her league-leading sixth powerplay marker — the game’s winner — and added a highlight-reel breakaway tally to secure the win for her team. In the PWHL’s final regular season game on May 5, Spooner added to her league-leading goal total with two more tallies, including her seventh powerplay goal and fifth game-winner— also tops in the PWHL— in a 5-2 win against Ottawa, as she ended her season with 20 goals in 24 games. With the inaugural PWHL regular season wrapped up, Spooner officially claimed the league’s first two awards: 2024 PWHL Points Leader (20-7—27) and 2024 PWHL Top Goal Scorer (20).

Third Star – Hilary Knight (RW – BOS)

    • Knight is named as one of the PWHL’s 3 Stars of the Week for the first time as Boston’s captain recorded her second multi-point game of the season in her lone contest last week—and her timing couldn’t have been better. With Boston needing at least one point against Montréal to stay alive in the playoff race, Knight put up a goal and an assist, leading her team to a 4-3 regulation victory in thrilling fashion, securing three points in the standings. The 34-year-old got her team on the board first, out-muscling a Montréal defender to notch her sixth goal of the season. Knight then demonstrated her playmaking ability, threading the needle through traffic to set up Megan Keller in the second period. With her team’s season on the line, Knight played 27:30 and added five shots on goal.

PWHL Stars of the Week – Nurse Dominates for Top Honors

Today the Professional Women’s Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of April 22nd through 28th.

First Star – Sarah Nurse (C – TOR)

    • Nurse is named first star of the week for the second time this season — she also received the honor for the week ending March 3. The 29-year-old played in just one game last week, but she made it count, recording her first-ever PWHL hat trick. Her trio of tallies was the most among all PWHL players for the week, as Toronto continued their quest for first place in the league standings. Nurse opened the scoring against New York on April 28, just 1:05 into the game, and added a powerplay marker later in the period. She completed her hat trick 56 seconds into the third period as Toronto earned three key points in the standings via a 6-2 win, moving back into first place while guaranteeing themselves home-ice advantage for at least the first round of the playoffs. Nurse now has 5 goals in her last two games played and sits tied for second in the league in goals scored, with 10 tallies in 22 games played. She also moves into fourth in overall league scoring with 20 points.
The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT

    Second Star – Ann-Renee Desbiens (G – MON)

    • Desbiens is named second star after guiding her team to two regulation victories last week. In two games played, she posted a .969 save percentage with a goals-against-average of 1.00, as Montréal secured six points in the standings, clinching home ice advantage for at least the first round of the PWHL playoffs. In her first game of the week, Desbiens made 31 saves against New York in a 5-2 win that saw the goaltender help her team go 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, including three in the first period alone. Then, on April 27 against Ottawa, Desbiens posted her first-ever PWHL shutout, making 31 saves in a 2-0 victory. Her performance was highlighted by turning aside a season-high 21 shots in the third period, second-most for any PWHL goaltender in a single period this season. Desbiens now has seven wins on the season, tied for third-most in the league.

Third Star – Hannah Brandt (C – BOS)

    • Brandt is named third star of the week after putting up two points (1G, 1A) in two games played last week. First, on April 24 against Ottawa, Brandt recorded a primary assist — and scored her team’s lone shootout goal in a 3-2 SO loss. With her team’s playoff hopes on the line against Minnesota on April 27, Brandt scored a dazzling game-winning goal with just 2.7 second remaining in regulation to lift her team to victory, securing three key points in the standings. In addition to her heroics on April 27, Brandt boasted a plus-minus rating of +three, won 57.25% of her faceoffs and averaged more than 20 minutes of ice-time across two games played last week.
