PWHL Stars of the Week – Campbell’s Shutouts Earn Top Honors

Today the Professional Women’s Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of May 5th through 12th.

First Star – Kristin Campbell (G – TOR)

    • Campbell is named first star of the week after backstopping her team to a 2-0 series lead over Minnesota in the PWHL Playoffs. The Toronto netminder posted back-to-back shutouts, maintaining a perfect save percentage in the playoffs through her team’s first two games. She officially recorded the PWHL’s first-ever shutout on May 8, leading her team to a 4-0 victory in Game 1. Campbell made 26 saves in the game and held strong as her team was outshot 11-4 in the second frame. The netminder remained steady in Game 2— a tight-checking contest that went down to the wire. Campbell made 21 saves in the match and was particularly sharp while Toronto was on the penalty kill, as the team went 4-for-4 in the game, including killing two penalties in the third period. With the game tied 0-0 late in the third frame, Campbell continued to shut the door, allowing her team to take a late lead en route to a 2-0 victory— and 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series.

Second Star – Aerin Frankel (G – BOS)

    • Frankel is named second star of the week after clinching two overtime victories against PWHL Montréal in their playoff matchup. In Game 1, Frankel set a PWHL record for saves in a game, stopping 53 shots, including a combined 29 in the third period and overtime. Boston came out victorious via a 2-1 overtime victory — despite being outshot 54-26 — the largest shot difference between two teams recorded in a PWHL game this season. After setting the single-game save record in Game 1, Frankel broke her own record in Game 2, stopping 56 of 57 shots Montréal put on net in a contest that saw Boston once again come out on top, this time in triple overtime. Through two games played, Frankel has made 109 saves while posting a .982 save percentage and a 0.65 goals-against-average in 185:28 played.

Third Star – Blayre Turnbull (C – TOR)

    • Turnbull is named as one of the PWHL’s 3 Stars of the Week for the first time this season as her team kicked off their playoff semi-final matchup against Minnesota. In Game 1—a 4-0 victory for her team on home ice— Turnbull scored twice, and she remains the only PWHL player to record a multi-goal game in the playoffs thus far. She was also a +3 in the game with four shots on goal. In Game 2, Turnbull was +1, won 55.6% of her draws, had three shots on net, and recorded a game-high nine hits. Turnbull is a key contributor to Toronto’s penalty kill unit—through two games, they’re a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, which includes shutting down four Minnesota powerplays in Game 2. Turnbull’s contributions at both ends of the ice helped her team take a 2-0 series lead against Minnesota in their best-of-five playoff matchup.
