Welcome to Mike’s Season Ticket Holder (STH) Xperience!

This season is my first one as a Season Ticket holder for the Washington Capitals, and in place of doing Caps Game Recaps, I’ll be sharing my experience being a STH during the 2024-25 season. Here I’ll be sharing all of the photos that I take during pregame warmups, along with any FB/IG Reels and TikToks I create at the games.

I will also be doing this for any other games I may go to, whether it’s in Hershey for the Bears, or at other NHL venues for games.

It’s the third and final game of their opening homestand as the Washington Capitals host the Dallas Stars.

    #Caps50Facts

Originally in Minnesota as the North Stars, the Stars moved to Dallas in 1993. In their first visit to Washington as the Dallas Stars, the Capitals would fall 6-3. Forwards Joe Juneau recorded a goal and an assist, and Dmitri Khristich recorded two assists in the loss.

    Thoughts on the Game

This game was definitely a battle. I felt this was going to be a long one for the Caps after how they played in the first period. In the first period, the Caps looked very disjointed, but they turned it around in the second period.

Tom Wilson scoring to extend his goal scoring streak to three games was beautiful. Wilson with Pierre-Luc Dubois and Connor McMichael is hands down the Caps best line after three games.

Charlie Lindgren looked solid and, in the third period, got amazing buy-in by his team to defend the 3-2 lead and turn it into a victory.

It’s the second game of the season as the Washington Capitals hosted the Vegas Golden Knights.

    #Caps50Facts

The 2017-18 season marked the inaugural season of the Vegas Golden Knights as they made history as an expansion franchise. However, the Cinderella story came to an end in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final when the Washington Capitals clinched the series and their first ever Stanley Cup.

    Jersey Tracking

    Thoughts on the Game

This was a much better game than what we saw on Saturday night against New Jersey. The Capitals got the hop on the Golden Knights, and you could really see they wanted it. Especially Alex Ovechkin.

Ovechkin had two assists to give him 700 career NHL assists (which means he’ll start scoring goals now?), six hits, and a takeaway. He looked like a man on a mission.

Logan Thompson looked solid in goal. The two goals against were tough ones that we really can’t blame him for. But overall, he had a really solid game to earn his first win as a Capital.

Speaking of firsts as Capital, Jakob Chychrun would score his first goal as a Cap, and Andrew Mangiapane would record his first assist/point as a Capital when he assisted on Jakub Vrana’s first of the season.

There are a few things the Capitals still need to work on, but if they keep playing this way, they should have another big game in them against Dallas on Thursday.

    2024-25 Preview

Going into the 2024-25 season, the Washington Capitals come in as a different team. With changes done at all three positions, the Capitals brass is hoping that these changes can push the team into the playoffs for a deep run. Also, the brass hope that it will take pressure off of star forward and captain Alex Ovechkin as he continues his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s goal record, which sees Ovechkin sit 42 goals from breaking the record.

    Forwards

Starting on offense, the Capitals would move on from forwards Beck Malenstyn (trade with Buffalo), Nicolas Aube-Kubel (signed with Buffalo), and Max Pacioretty (signed with Toronto), and enter the season with both TJ Oshie and Nicklas Backstrom on long term injured reserve (LTIR). Coming to DC would be forwards Pierre-Luc Dubois (trade with Los Angeles), Andrew Mangiapane (trade with Calgary), Brandon Duhaime (free agent signing), and Taylor Raddysh (free agent signing).

When looking at these new additions it’s rather simple to see where these four will fit into the lineup. Both Duhaime and Raddysh will comprise the new fourth line with Nic Dowd at center. As for Dubois and Mangiapane, that’s where things can become interchangeable. Mangiapane, who I’ve always liked from his time with the Calgary Flames, is a suitable replacement to Oshie and will be able to fill that right wing spot very well throughout the lineup.

Now for Dubois, who Elliotte Friedman had been reporting as part of a trade with the Los Angeles Kings for goalie Darcy Kuemper since January, he is an interesting factor. Dubois has all of the talent in the world, but I’m not one hundred percent sure with him. He’s projected to be the number one center, but I can see him be on the second line too. We saw the magic head coach Spencer Carbery did with Anthony Mantha last season. Will Carbery be able to do it again this season with Dubois?

    Defense

On defense the Capitals shipped Nick Jensen to the Ottawa Senators for Jakob Chychrun, and then signed Mat Roy via free agency from Los Angeles. Roy is definitely a top four pairing shut down defenseman, and will help with the penalty kill. For Chychrun, he becomes the second player the Capitals picked up that only lasted a season with their new team. Questions will surround Chychrun like they do with Dubois, but we shall see how he fits into the mix.

One thing I will say though is that it will be interesting to see how Alexander Alexeyev and Ethan Bear will fit into things. Alexeyev really showed promise during the later part of the season when injuries hit the Capitals defensive core. For Bear, he is looking to re-establish himself after having a really difficult 2023-24 season that saw him miss the beginning of the season due to shoulder surgery, then after 24 games played, he would enter the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program to help him with depression and anxiety. I’m really pulling for Bear. I want this season to be a great one for him.

    Goaltending

Moving between the pipes, Charlie Lindgren solidified himself as the number one goalie for the Capitals, and with Kuemper being traded to Los Angeles for Dubois, the brass had a decision to make. Do they let Hunter Shepard and Clay Stevenson battle it out to be Lindgren’s backup, or do they go outside the organization? They chose to go outside the organization and picked up Logan Thompson from the Vegas Golden Knights.

Thompson, who won the Stanley Cup with Vegas in 2023, comes to the Capitals already familiar with the organization having previously played for the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL in the Capitals farm system. Thompson also gives the Capitals a credible 1B option to split time with Lindgren so neither goalie gets overworked. I personally view this as a win0win scenario for the Capitals, and with both goalies entering the final season, the competition between the two of them will be fun to watch.

    TXHT at Caps 50 Fest

On Thursday, October 10th, 2024, the Washington Capitals kicked off their 50th Anniversary with Caps 50 Fest.

Caps 50 Fest featured the 2024-25 Capitals team, along with 70+ alumni, special panels hosted by Joe Beninati, and a concert by Third Eye Blind. We would also be treated to a special appearance by the Stanley Cup as well.

Overall it was good event. Third Eye Blind put on a spectacular show, and the panels were fun and insightful. The only downside was the lack of interaction I got to have with the Alumni, especially since they were the ones I was looking forward to meeting the most. I got to meet Olaf Kolzig very briefly before he did an interview, and I got my picture with Aaron Volpatti (who is a really cool dude). I really wish the alumni were more accessible than they were. (Note: I had a General Admission Floor ticket. I understand that the alumni were more accessible to the VIPs, but for General Admission ticket holders I felt was a bit more restrictive.)

    TXHT Presents “So Close”

TXHT and X75 Productions is excited to announce it’s first ever docu-series, “So Close: The Story of the 1997-98 Washington Capitals”.

The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT

“So Close: The Story of the Washington Capitals” is a 14 chapter docu-series that chronicles the Washington Capitals from April 1997 through June 1998. It will cover everything from the firings of general manager David Poile and coach Jim Schoenfeld to the hirings of general manger George McPhee and coach Ron Wilson. Plus, we look at the extensive contract negotiations of key players, incidents that took place during the season, honors and milestones that were achieved, and the thrilling run to the 1998 Stanley Cup Final. This is a very thorough look at the 1997-98 Washington Capitals

“So Close” is an extensive labor of love project that began development in 2012. In the beginning the vision for “So Close” was to be a 12 episode documentary series for television, but after changes to Monumental Sports, talks ceased and the project was shelved for over a decade.

Then in 2023, we dusted the project off, and began recollecting all of our research for the project. TXHT is very grateful for the Montgomery County Public Library and for all of their resources to help us in our research. The MCPL’s resources allowed us to look up Washington Post articles from both 1997 and 1998, and is the main source for a lot of the content that you’ll see in the docu-series.

Due to TXHT’s inability to conduct interviews with the players, coaches, and management, all of the quotes that you will see are directly from the research that was conducted. At the end of every chapter will be a Resources section with all articles cited that the quotes were pulled from.

TXHT is also thankful to both Sports Illustrated and The Hockey News for having archives that we could use for additional research.

“So Close: The Story of the 1997-98 Washington Capitals” debuts on Monday, October 7th, with new chapters being released every other week.

  • Washington Capitals Acquire Andrew Mangiapane in Trade

Washington Capitals Acquire Andrew Mangiapane in Trade

As we prepare for the 2024 NHL Draft, the Washington Capitals would acquire forward Andrew Mangiapane from the Calgary Flames.

A week after the Caps made their first big move of the offseason when they traded goaltender Darcy Kuemper for forward Pierre-Luc Dubois, General Manager Brian MacLellan would continue to make moves as he would trade Colorado’s 2025 second round pick (from the Lars Eller trade) to the Flames for forward Andrew Mangiapane.

The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT

    The Player

Mangiapane made his debut with Calgary during the 2017-18 season where he would play ten games, but would not record any points. Then during the 2018-19 season Mangiapane would play in 44 games for his rookie season and record eight goals and five assists for 13 points. He would then record 32 points in both the shortened 2019-20 (17g, 15a) and 2020-21 (18g, 14a) seasons. In what would be his first full NHL season, Mangiapane would play in all 82 games and record a career high 35 goals and 20 assists for also a career high 55 points.

Then in the past two seasons, Mangiapane would crack 40 points as he would record 17 goals and 26 assists in 2022-23, and 14 goals and 26 assists in 2023-24. Mangiapane would also be a combined +39 his past three seasons. Overall in 417 games played, Mangiapane has 109 goals and 106 assists for 215 points.

In the playoffs, Mangiapane has appeared in the playoffs three times with the Flames where he has played in a combined 27 games, and has recorded six goals and six assists for 12 points.

    The Contract

Mangiapane will be entering the final year of a three year contract that he signed in the summer of 2022. His salary cap hit will be $5.8 million, and as part of the trade, the Flames did not retain any salary, so the Caps will be on the hook for the full amount during the 2024-25 season. Mangiapane’s deal also carries a Modified No Trade Clause where he needs to submit an 8 team no trade list. Mangiapane will be an unrestricted free agent when the 2024-25 season has concluded.

    Overall Thoughts

Overall, I love this trade. Mangiapane is someone I’ve always liked on the Flames, and is someone who has also brought good fantasy value for those that do Fantasy Hockey. I can see that the change of scenery will be good for Mangiapane, and he is someone that you can plug in the middle six part of the lineup. I also wouldn’t be surprised if he gets some looks on the powerplay and penalty kill as well. I’m very interested to see how Spencer Carbery will utilize him this upcoming season.

Also, this goes without saying, but I’d probably expect Mangiapane to wear 88 this season, but we’ll see.

  • Breaking Down the Caps 50th Anniversary Branding

Breaking Down the Caps 50th Anniversary Branding

It has finally come! The Washington Capitals unveiled their 50th Anniversary branding on Monday morning, and there is so much to take in and breakdown in regard to what we’ll be seeing for the next year.

The Official Men’s Personal Care Products of TXHT.

    The 50th Anniversary Logo

Taking a look at the Primary Logo first, we have a sleek, retro look that features the original lowercase Capitals font in it’s reverse-italic design that debuted back in 1974. The logo features the original Capitals wordmark up above the number 50 with the iconic Stick and Puck that has always been associated with the Capitals logos throughout their history. Underneath the “5” you see it say “Est. 1974” to recognize the year the team was established, and at the very bottom we see five stars alternating between red and blue. The stars represent how many decades the Capitals have been in the DMV. The colors for the primary logo use the original red and blue that were used back in 1974 to give it that true retro feel.

Overall, I like it. It’s a simple logo that does what it’s supposed to do and pay tribute to the past, and that’s all that really needed to be accomplished.

The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT

    Jersey Patch

Moving onto the jersey patch, the Capitals are utilizing what they are calling the secondary logo for the 50th Anniversary. Same style font and look with the 50 and stick and puck, but this time it has a more 3D feel to it which allows for it to pop more when it’s on the jersey. Gone are the stars and the “Capitals”, but the “Est 1974” remains but in a cut ribbon fashion. Again, an overall solid look.

One other thing that I like about this is that the patch’s colors match that of the jersey it is on. So for the home and road jerseys, the patches will be in the current red and navy blue, so it blends really nicely with the jersey.

However, with that said, where it’s going to be placed on the home jersey is very disappointing. Due to the ill-advised ad patch for that sportsbook, the 50th Anniversary patch will not sit on the right breast like tradition usually has it at, but instead it will be placed on the left breast of the jersey where the C and A’s go for Alex Ovechkin and the rest of the leadership group. This will lead to clunkiness, and will not look appealing at all. I dread media day and seeing those player head shots with the patch on it with a C or A next to it.

I would expect that on the road white jerseys the 50th Anniversary patch would be on the right breast like normal.

The Official Jersey Retailer of TXHT

    Alternative Logos

Next up we have the alternate logos, and we’re also going to include the wordmarks here too. For the alternative logo the Capitals placed their primary 50th Anniversary logo in a circle border that is blue but with a white filling for the background. Now I know what you’re thinking, that’s not much of an alternate, and you’re right, but it’s what they are doing with the alternate that makes me excited.

So we know the primary logo is in the 1974 red, white, and blue, but as we have learned through both the info graphics, and in the promotional video introducing the 50th Anniversary logo, but there will be a “90’s Era” version and a “Modern Era” version. The primary is in what the Capitals are calling “Caps Classic”. The “90’s Era” is the one I’m personally more excited for as it features the Blue, Black, and Bronze colors. As of now we don’t know how often we’re going to get to see these colors, but I’m hoping that it’ll be just as frequent as the other versions. The third version is obviously the “Modern Era” with the current colors, and it looks fine.

    Wordmarks

Looking at the wordmarks for the Capitals, they took a page from the secondary logo, and gave it a more 3D look to it which makes it standout really nicely. The three versions they have say “Capitals 50th”, “Capitals 50th Anniversary” with anniversary underneath Capitals 50th, and “Capitals 50th Anniversary” with all three in a straight line. For all three they utilize the secondary logo for the “50”. As of now we have only seen the wordmarks int eh 1974 colors, and will be interesting to see if they release them in the 90’s and Modern era versions.

  • Former Cap Chris Simon Passes Away

Former Cap Chris Simon Passes Away

It is with sad news today that we have learned of the passing of former Washington Capitals forward Chris Simon.

Simon, who was born in Wawa, Ontario, Canada, was drafted into the NHL 25th overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 1990 NHL Draft, but would be part of the infamous Eric Lindros trade to the Quebec Nordiques that would also see Peter Forsberg, Steve Duchesne, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Ron Hextall, and a pair of draft picks go to Quebec.

Simon would shift over to Colorado when the Nordiques relocated to Denver in 1995 to become the Avalanche. During their first season in Colorado, Simon and the Avalanche would win the Stanley Cup in 1996. Then on November 2nd, 1997, Simon would be traded to the Capitals with Curtis Leschyshyn for Keith Jones and a pair of draft picks. Simon would play an integral part for the Capitals as he would be a part of the 1997-98 team that would make their first ever Stanley Cup Final appearance.

In his seven years with the Capitals Simon would record career highs in goals (29 – 1999-2000), assists (20 – 1999-2000), and points (49 – 1999-2000). On November 1st, 2002 Simon would be traded to the Chicago Blackhawks, and after that he would go on to play for the New York Rangers, Calgary Flames, New York Islanders, and Minnesota Wild.

Simon would end his NHL career in 2007-08 as a member of the Wild. Simon would go on to play in 15 NHL season that would see him play in 864 games with 144 goals and 161 assists for 305 points. Simon would also amass 1,824 penalty minutes.

TXHT would like express our condolences to Simon’s family, friends, and former teammates during this difficult time. Simon was 52 years old.

  • Caps Fall Flat to B’s in Opener

Caps Fall Flat to B’s in Opener

    Boston Bruins (0-0-0 0pts) v. Washington Capitals (0-0-0 0pts)

    Game Recap:

To kick off the 2022-23 NHL season the Washington Capitals would play host to the Boston Bruins, and to start the game the Caps would get an early powerplay, but good ole Blaine Forsythe didn’t bother to change a thing so it would be a non-existent powerplay for the Caps to start the game. Shortly after the Caps would go to the penalty kill and it would be Patrice Bergeron striking on the powerplay to give the B’s the 1-0 lead over the Caps. Then later in the period David Pastrnak would strike to grow the Bruins lead to two. The Caps would get a late powerplay opportunity, but once again did nothing with it.

In the second period Taylor Hall would open the period with a tally to grow the B’s lead to three, but the Caps would respond as Dylan Strome would make a spectacular play to get the puck to the front of the net, and with the assist of a lucky bounce, as Anthony Mantha would bury the puck into the net for the Caps first goal of the young season. Then later in the period Conor Sheary would strike on a beautiful blast to get the Caps back within one of the Bruins.

However, going into the third period the Capitals would fall flat as the Bruins would get goals from David Krejci and Hampus Lindholm to defeat the Caps 5-2. For the Caps this was a disappointing start for the team as the first half of the game they came out flat, and the fact that the powerplay was not really clicking and they were dominated in the faceoff circle (both of which fall under Forsythe) this was not a good solid effort from the Caps. They did have good opportunities, but they threw too many away with too many passes when they really should have gone for it.

The Caps don’t have a lot of time to think about this one as they head to Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs on Thursday night.

  • Game Recap – 11/23/2019 – Vancouver Canucks v. Washington Capitals

Game Recap – 11/23/2019 – Vancouver Canucks v. Washington Capitals

    Vancouver Canucks (11-8-4 26pts) v. Washington Capitals (16-4-4 36pts)

    Game Recap:

Celebrating Hockey Fights Cancer with a special starting six, the Washington Capitals would play host to the Vancouver Canucks and a little over two minutes into the game Jakub Vrana would unleash a bullet past Jacob Markstrom to take the early 1-0 lead. The Capitals would then get a powerplay opportunity, but they would not be able to capitalize on it despite getting some quality chances. Then the Canucks would get the Capitals into penalty to get a 58 second two man advantage that would see Elias Pettersson score to tie the game at one. The Capitals would be able to kill off the second penalty to keep the game tied at one. After some more back and forth between the two teams, time would expire and remain tied at one going into the first intermission.

In the second period there would be no goals scored, but the Capitals would give the Canucks two more powerplay opportunities. However, this time the Capitals were able to execute the penalty kill much better than in the first period. Tom Wilson would also draw an interference call on Tyler Myers to give the Capitals their second powerplay of the game, and will have a little over a minute of powerplay time to start the third period.

In the third period the Capitals would fail to score on their powerplay to open the period, and again on a powerplay they earned while forcing the play in the Canucks zone they would fail to capitalize on the opportunity. Both teams would trade chances late in the third, but neither team would score and the game would go to overtime. In overtime Evgeny Kuznetsov would take a hooking penalty, but the Capitals would stay alive by killing off the penalty. In the final minute of overtime both Alex Ovechkin and TJ Oshie would try to secure the victory for the Capitals, but Jacob Markstrom would stand tall to force the game to go to the shootout. Then after six scoreless rounds, it would be Bo Horvat scoring in the seventh round to secure the 2-1 victory for the Canucks.
