    The Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins renew their rivalry on Wednesday Night Hockey on NBC Sports Network. The Capitals will look to keep their 5 game winning streak going, while the Penguins will look to bounce back from their recent loss to the Anaheim Ducks, and gain some consistency.

    The Capitals need to start getting their special teams back on track, especially the penalty kill. It has been the biggest weakness thus far as their penalty kill has given up too many goals and ranks 27th overall in the League.

     

    2. Smart defense

    The Capitals need to play smart defensively against the Penguins, and contain the Penguins speed and skill. The Capitals also need to make better plays to break out of their zone as well too.

    There were five contests taking place in the NHL last night.

     

    Anaheim 4, PITTSBURGH 2

    The Anaheim Ducks faced off against the Pittsburgh Penguins last night and would come away with the 4-2 win.  With this win, the Ducks have won six consecutive road games, as well as their ninth game out of the last ten contests.

    For the Pittsburgh Penguins, this loss would give them a record of 15-12-6 (36 points), and places them in fourth place in the Metropolitan division.

     

    COLUMBUS 1, Vegas 0

    The Columbus Blue Jackets faced off against the defending Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights and would come away with the 1-0 win.

    Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky would go on to register his 13th shutout since the start of the 2016-17 season and is tied with Pekka Rinne for the most shutouts in that time span.

     

    Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno would score the lone goal in the third period.  This contest would also mark the 800th NHL game for Foligno.

     

     

     

     

    Boston 4, MONTREAL 0

    The Boston Bruins would visit the Montreal Canadiens and would come out on Montreal with a 4-0 victory.

    With this win, the Bruins have won the last five contests against the Canadiens when they are the visitors.

     

    Bruins goaltender Jaroslav Halak would turn aside all 22 shots he faced whereas Canadiens goaltender Carey Price had 31 saves on 35 save opportunities.

     

     

    OTTAWA 4, Nashville 3 (OT)

     

    Ottawa Senators Brady Tkachuk would register his tenth career goal as a Senator in his 24th game played with the club last night.

     

     

    Ottawa rookie defenceman Max LaJoie would also register his seventh goal in this contest, good for a tie for third place all-time in Senators history for most goals by a rookie defenceman.

     

     

    Also for Ottawa, the rookies on this team account for most points combined between all players across the League thus far during the 2018-19 season.

     

     

    Thoms Chabot would seal the win for the Senators in the overtime frame.

     

     

    NY Islanders 4, COLORADO 1

    NY Islanders goaltender Thomas Griess would make 30 saves in the contest to give the Islanders the 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche last night.

    Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov would make 17 saves on 21 save opportunities.

     

     

     

    Two of the Islanders goals would come on the power-play in this contest and the penalty kill would end up playing a big factor in this win to start off the road trip for the Islanders in this contest.

    There were 10 contests on the NHL slate yesterday.

     

    Calgary 2, MINNESOTA 1

    In a penalty filled contest between the Calgary Flames and the Minnesota Wild, the Calgary Flames would come away from Minnesota with the 2-1 victory yesterday afternoon.

    Flames D Mark Giordano became the first player in Flames history to have shorthanded goals in consecutive games with his short-handed goal at 12:03 in the first period.

     

     

    Despite being outshot, Calgary would have the most important side of the stat sheet with their 2-1 win.

     

    MONTREAL 5, Ottawa 2

     

    This would be the Canadiens third win over the Senators in 12 days.

     

     

    The Montreal Canadiens, with their win, would give head coach Claude Julien his 600th NHL win.

     

    NY ISLANDERS 4, Detroit 3 (OT)

     

    NY Islanders Matthew Barzal would net the winner in the shootout frame to give the Islanders the win over Detroit.

     

    PITTSBURGH 4, Los Angeles 3

    With the overtime winner by Phil Kessel, Kessel now ties Hall of Famer Mike Modano, Bill Guerin, and David Legwand for the second most regular season overtime winners by a  U.S.-born player with nine goals.

     

    ANAHEIM 2, Columbus 1

    The Anaheim Ducks would seal the 2-1 win, holding off a late rally from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

    Anaheim’s Daniel Sprong would score the only two goals for the Ducks.  Anaheim has won 10 out of their last 12 contests with this win over Columbus.

    FLORIDA 4, Toronto 3 (OT)

    With the Florida Panthers over the Toronto Maple Leafs in overtime, the Panthers Aleksander Barkov would become the first player in the 25-year history of the franchise to complete the hat-trick with an overtime goal.

    Barkov, with his three goals in the contest, now has 114 goals as a Panther.  He moved past Radek Dvorak, who had 113 goals as a Panther.

    Despite Toronto scoring three goals in the third period, two by Mitchell Marner and other by John Tavares, the Maple Leafs were unable to take advantage in the overtime frame.

    Washington Capitals F Alex Ovechkin would extend his point-scoring streak to 14 games, a career-high, with his League-leading 29th goal on the season.

    Alex Ovechkin now sits one goal away from having his 14th consecutive season in which he has scored at least 30 goals in a season.

     

    Rasums Dahlin, last June’s number one overall pick, became the fifth different rookie defenceman in Buffalo Sabres history to record at least three points in a contest.

    Nashville Predators Ryan Johansen would seal the winner in the shootout frame to give the Predators a of 22-10-1 (45 pts), moving back the top of the Western Conference standings.

     

    Nashville would also move to a record of 10-0-0 against Eastern Conference opponents during the 2018-19 campaign with the win over the New Jersey Devils.

    COLORADO 6, Dallas 4

     

    In this contest, Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen would become the fifth set of teammates to reach the 50-point plateau since the 1981-1982 season.

     

     

    VANCOUVER 5, Philadelphia 1

    Philadelphia’s lone goal in the contest would be scored by Scott Laughton at 16:29 in the first period to bring the

     

    Meanwhile for the Vancouver Canucks, rookie sensation Elias Pettersson continues to find his way onto to scoring sheet.

    Pettersson has extended an assist and point streak to six games, amassing three goals and nine assists (12 points) and this matches a Vancouver Canucks rookie record for longest assist streak.

     

    The longest assist streak belongs to J.J. Daigneault during the 1984-85 season.

     

    The longest rookie point streak belong to Pavel Bure, who had a point in at least eight straight contests during the 1991-92 season.

    Today is Saturday, December 15th, 2018, and these are your news and notes.

     

    There were eight contests in action yesterday.

     

    NEW JERSEY 5, Vegas 4 (OT)

    The Vegas Golden Knights would fall to the New Jersey Devils after be up 4-1.  New Jersey Devils would score four unanswered goals with New Jersey’s Nico Hischier scoring the game winner just 41 seconds into the overtime frame.

     

     

    Arizona 4, NY RANGERS 3 (OT)

     

    The Arizona Coyotes would also stage a come from behind win after being down three goals in the contest at the New York Rangers last night.  It would be the 12th time that the Coyotes franchise would accomplish this and the 29th time overall in franchise history.

     

     

    For the Rangers, goalie Henrik Lundqvist would register 30 saves on 34 opportunities.

     

     

    PITTSBURGH 5, Boston 3

     

    In an amazing performance, Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith became the third goalie in the last 20 years to have a game in which he had at least 48 saves.  DeSmith joins Jeff Zatkoff and Ty Conklin.

     

    Boston Bruins goalie Jaroslav Halak had a performance of 23 saves on 28 save chances.

     

     

     

    Ottawa 4, DETROIT 2

     

    The Ottawa Senators would go on and get the road win when they would defeat the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 last night at Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit, Michigan last night.

     

    Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard would have 28 saves in the contest and Ottawa Senators goalie Craig Anderson would have a performance of 26 saves on 28 save chances.

     

     

    Washington 6, CAROLINA 5 (OT)

     

    After the Washington Capitals would be down 4-1 at 6:41 mark in the second period, the Capitals would tie the game 4-4 toward the end of the second period.

     

    Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin would have consecutive games in which he would have a hat-trick, and now has 28 goals on the season.

     

     

     

     

    When Ovechkin scored the power-play goal in the third period at the 9:49 mark, it would be his 237th career power-play goal. He now ranks at seventh place on the all-time list for power-play goals.

     

    Finally, for the Washington Capitals, Jonas Siegenthaler registered his first NHL point with the assist on Alex Oveckin’s goal at the 3:56 mark in the first period.

    ST. LOUIS 4, Colorado 3 (OT)

    The St. Louis Blues would go on to defeat the Colorado Avalanche in overtime with the 4-3 win at home last night.

     

    At the 2:05 mark in the overtime period, St. Louis Blues Ryan O’Reilly would cap off a two-point night when O’Reilly scored the game winner.

     

     

    Also in the contest, Colorado Avalanche’s Mikko Rantanen would register his 40th assist on the season with the secondary assist on J.T. Compher’s eighth goal on the season at the 13:10 mark in the third period.

     

     

    Winnipeg 4, CHICAGO 3 (OT)

    Chicago Blackhawks captain Johnathan Toews would net two goals, but it would not be enough as the Blackhawks would fall to the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 at United Center in Chicago, Illinois last night.

     

     

     

    The Jets Mark Scheifele would net his sixth overtime winner, which is good for third place in franchise history.  Scheifele now only trails Ilya Kovalchuk and Dustin Byfuglien for the career lead.

     

    EDMONTON 4, Philadelphia 1

     

     

    Connor McDavid would have two goals, and an assist, good for his 34th career three-point performance.  It is now ranked tied for fifth place for most three-point games before one’s 22nd birthday.

    The Ottawa Senators would defeat the San Jose Sharks 6-2 yesterday afternoon.  This matchup would mark the return of Sharks D Erik Karlsson to Ottawa for the first time since the offseason trade.

     

    Ottawa’s Thomas Chabot recorded his 30th point on the season, making him the third player to get to 30 points for a Senator defenceman in franchise history.

     

     

    Ottawa’s Ben Harpur would score his first NHL career goal in the win for the Senators.

     

    NY ISLANDERS 3, Columbus 2

     

    The New York Islanders would play their first contest in the newly renovated Nassau Coliseum last night of the season.

     

    Columbus Blue Jackets Cam Atkinson would extend his point streak to a career-best 10 contests and is only three games shy of tying the all-time franchise record set by Ryan Johansen in the 2014-15 season.

     

     

    Dallas 2, VANCOUVER 1

     

    Detroit 4, BOSTON 2

    The Detroit Red Wings snapped an eight-game regular-season winless streak against the Boston Bruins as the visitors when they defeated the Boston Bruins 4-2 last night.

     

    MONTREAL 5, NY Rangers 2

    In his return to action, Montreal Canadiens captain Shea Weber would score twice to help lift the Canadiens past the New York Rangers with a 5-2 win.

     

     

    Tampa Bay 5, FLORIDA 4 (OT)

     

    Brayden Point of the Tampa Bay Lightning score the 15th game winner, the most in the NHL since the 2017-18 season.

     

     

    Tampa Bay would go on to win the contest over the Florida Panthers 5-4 in overtime.

     

    Winnipeg 4, NEW JERSEY 3 (OT)

     

    Mark Schiefele would score the fifth regular-season overtime goal, the most in Winnipeg Jets franchise history with the Jets 4-3 win over the New Jersey Devils last night.

     

    Philadelphia 4, PITTSBURGH 2

     

    Toronto 5, MINNESOTA 3

     

    The Toronto Maple Leafs would win their 10th road contest out of the 13 played thus far on the season with the 5-3 win over the Minnesota Wild.

    The Nashville Predators would score three goals in the first five minutes of the contest and would go on to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2.

    There were six different players that scored for the Arizona Coyotes when they would go on to rout the St. Louis Blues by the score of 6-1.

    In the NWHL contest from last night, the Connecticut Whale took on the Boston Pride in the NWHL Twitter Game of the Week.

     

    The Boston Pride would halt the Minnesota Whitecaps win streak at six games with the Pride’s 5-1 win at TRIA Rink last night.

     

    The contest would be scoreless for the first 17 minutes until  Mallory Souliotis scoredher first NWHL goal thanks to an assist from Amanda Pelkey to give the Pride the 1-0 lead.

     

    Jillian Dempsey would make the contest 2-0 before the end of the first period.

     

    Amanda Boulier would score the lone goal for the Whitecaps in the contest in the second period.

     

    The Boston Pride’s Hayley Skarupa would score on the power-play with 35 seconds left in the second period to give the Pride the 3-1 lead.

     

    In the third period Gigi Marvin would score both goals to give the Pride cement the 5-1 lead.

     

    The Minnesota Whitecaps look to take the win from the Boston Pride today at in front of another sold-out crowd at 2 p.m., CT and the game can be seen on NWHL.zone/watch

    The Buffalo Sabres would win their 10th straight contest, the most consecutive wins since the 2006-07 season in their 3-2 win over the San Jose Sharks last night.

    Brady Tkachuk and the Ottawa Senators would come back from a multi-goal deficit in the last 10 minutes of the game to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3.

     

    -Carolina 2, MONTREAL 1

    Carolina Hurricanes G Curtis McElhinney would have a 48 save performance, matching a career high, in the 2-1 over the Montreal Canadiens last night.

     

    -Anaheim 3, TAMPA BAY 1

    Anaheim Ducks G Ryan Miller would have 25 saves in his 373rd career win and is now one shy of the all-time record of 374 set by John Vanbiesbrouck for most wins by a U.S.-born goaltender.

     

    -Colorado 3, NASHVILLE 2

    Colorado Avalanche’s Mikko Rantanen became the first player this season to have 40 points when he had two assists in the Avalanche’s 3-2 win at the Nashville Predators last night.  With the achievement, Rantanen became the quickest player to reach to 40-point mark in a season since the Avalanche relocated from the Quebec Nordiques in 1995.

     

    -Arizona 4, MINNESOTA 3

    Despite the 4-3 loss to the Arizona Coyotes, Minnesota Wild’s Matt Dumba extended his point streak to seven games and matched a franchise high for a defenceman.  Ryan Suter achieved the mark of seven games with at least a point twice.

     

    -Pittsburgh 4, WINNIPEG 3

     

    Pittsburgh Penguins F Phil Kessel would extend his point streak to nine games and is the longest active point streak in the League.

     

    -Vegas 8, CHICAGO 3

    The Vegas Golden Knights would score a franchise-record eight goals in their rout over the Chicago Blackhawks last night.

     

    -EDMONTON 1, Dallas 0 (OT)

     

    -Los Angeles 2, VANCOUVER 1 (OT)

    After his hat trick on Sunday, it only took the Los Angeles Kings Dustin Brown 53 seconds to score the game-winner in the extra frame to give the Kings the 2-1 win at the Vancouver Canucks last night.

    Yesterday’s schedule of games:

     

    Washington 5, NY RANGERS 3

    The Washington Capitals staged the 50th multi-goal comeback win on the NHL season yesterday afternoon when they defeated the NY Rangers 5-3.

    TORONTO 6, Philadelphia 0

    Andreas Johnsson had a hat trick, and achieved the mark in the first period.  Johnsson is the first player to score three goals in the first period since Wendell Clark on October 11, 1986.  Johnsson is the eighth player to score a hat trick in the first period.

    With the 6-0 win, this marks the largest margin of victory in a shutout at home since they defeated the Buffalo Sabres 7-0.

     

     

    Boston 3, MONTREAL 2

    Boston’s D John Moore would go on to score the game-winner for the Bruins, the first goal of his career.

     

    Buffalo 3, DETROIT 2 (SO)

    The Buffalo Sabres in this contest would win their ninth straight, the most since the 2006-07 season when they won 10 straight.


    Jeff Skinner of the Sabres scored his 18th goal on the season, the most so far on the season.  This is Skinner’s first season with the Buffalo Sabres.

    Chicago 5, FLORIDA 4 (OT)

    The Chicago Blackhawks would go on to win their first road game since their win on October 20th at the Columbus Blue Jackets when Chicago’s Erik Gustafsson would score the game-winner in the overtime frame.

    In the last 14 games between the two teams, Chicago has a record of 12-2-0 against Florida.

    NY ISLANDERS 4, Carolina 1

    NY Islanders Josh Bailey had his sixth multi-point game of the season, leading the team.  Bailey had 20 multi-point games during the 2017-18 campaign.

    PITTSBURGH 4, Columbus 2

    Pittsburgh Penguins Jake Guentzel had a hat trick of his own in the 4-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets last night.

    Winnipeg 8, ST. LOUIS 4

    Patrik Laine scored on five different occasions to help the Winnipeg Jets defeat the St. Louis Blues 8-4 at Enterprise Center in St. Louis last night.

    Laine joins three other players to have a five-goal performance before their 21st birthday.

    The Vegas Golden Knights scored the fastest goal in franchise history in the shutout over the San Jose Sharks last night.

    Marc-Andre Fleury posted a shutout in consecutive appearances for the third time.  He is also the second goalie in the expansion era to have at least 5 shutouts in 25 teams games in two different seasons.  He joins Ed Belfour on this list for such an achievement.

    Vancouver Canucks rookie Elias Pettersson had a multi-point contest and Adam Gaudette scored his first NHL goal in the 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center in Los Angeles last night.
