    Game Recaps:

    Florida Panthers v. Buffalo Sabres – 7p EST Start Time

    In Buffalo the Sabres look to keep their winning ways goings as they host the Florida Panthers, and after a scoreless 39 minutes and 31 seconds the Sabres would strike first as Johan Larsson would score his first of the season to give the Sabres the 1-0 lead heading into the second intermission. The Sabres would feed off of their momentum as Marco Scandella would score two minutes into the third to give the Sabres the 2-0 lead. However, the Panthers would respond with goals from Evegnii Dadonov and Mike Hoffman to tie the game at two and send it to overtime. After 5 minutes of scoreless overtime the game would go to the shootout, and the Sabres would get goals from Jack Eichel and Casey Mittlestadt to give the Sabres the 3-2 victory.

     

    Anaheim Ducks v. Columbus Blue Jackets – 7p EST Start Time

    The Anaheim Ducks come to town as they visit the Columbus Blue Jackets looking for their fourth win of the season. After a scoreless first period the Ducks would get goals from Jakob Silfverberg and Cam Fowler to give them the two goal lead, but Pierre-Luc Dubois would score to cut the Ducks lead to one. However, after a scoreless third period Fowler’s goal would stand to become the game winner as the Ducks defeated the Blue Jackets 2-1.

    New York Islanders v. Carolina Hurricanes – 730p EST Start Time

    In Carolina the Hurricanes look to make franchise history as they aim to win their fifth straight game to start the season as they host the New York Islanders. In the first period both teams would traded goals as the Hurricanes would strike first a Teuvo Teravainen would score four minutes into the game, but then Brock Nelson would tie the game back up at one on the powerplay. However, the Hurricanes would get the final goal of the period as Brett Pesce would score to make it 2-1 going into the first intermission. Then in the second period Johnny Boychuk would score on the powerplay to tie the game for the Islanders at two, but the Hurricanes would score three unanswered goals as Erik Haula and Dougie Hamilton would score in the second period, and then Andrei Svechnikov would score his first of the season in the third period to ice the 5-2 victory for the Hurricanes.

    News:

    • The Winnipeg Jets have granted defenseman Dmitry Kulikov a personal leave from the team. The Jets have also designated Kulikov to the Non-Player Roster, and will not count against the team’s active 23 man roster. However, Kulikov’s cap hit will continue to count against the Jets salary cap.
      • As a result of Kulikov’s personal leave and Josh Morrissey’s injury the Jets have also called up defenders Sami Niku and Nelson Nogier from the Manitoba Moose of the AHL.
      • The Jets also placed forward Bryan Little on the injured list.

     

    • The San Jose Sharks have signed veteran forward Patrick Marleau to a one year $700k deal.

    Carolina Hurricanes v. Florida Panthers – 7p EST Start Time

    In Florida, the Carolina Hurricanes look to continue their winning ways as they take on their host Panthers, and the Hurricanes would keep their surge going as they would score four goals in the first period as Jordan Staal, Teuvo Teravainen, Dougie Hamilton, and Ryan Dzingel would all get the puck past Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. Going into the second period the Panthers would put Sam Montembeault between the pipes to start, but Dzingel would still score his second of the game to give the Hurricanes the 5-0 lead. However, the Panthers would finally get on the board as MacKenzie Weegar would get one past James Reimer to make it 5-1. Then in the third period the Panther would get powerplay goals from Keith Yandle  and Evgenii Dadonov, but Sebastian Aho would score late to give the Hurricanes the 6-3 victory.

     

    Edmonton Oilers v. New York Islanders – 7p EST Start Time

    The Edmonton Oilers head to the Island to face the New York Islanders as they look for their third consecutive victory, and in the first period the Islanders would take the lead on an Anthony Beauvillier shorthanded goal, but the Oilers would respond as they would get back to back goals from James Neal at even strength and on the powerplay to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. In the second period James Neal would complete the natural hat trick when he would score his second powerplay goal of the game. Then Zack Kassian would score his third of the season to give the Oilers a 4-1  lead. Then in the third period James Neal would score his fourth of the game to lead the Oilers to an eventual 5-2 viictory. Matt Martin would score the Islanders second goal of the game in the third.

     

    Winnipeg Jets v. Pittsburgh Penguins – 7p EST Start Time

    The Winnipeg Jets look to get themselves in the win column as they visit the Pittsburgh Penguins, but it would be the Penguins who would strike first when Sidney Crosby would strike 32 seconds into the game. However, the Jets would respond with goals from Ville Heinola and Nikolaj Ehlers to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission. In the second period the Jets would soar as they would score two more goals as Tucker Poolman and Neal Pionk would get on the board to grow the Jets lead to 4-1. The Jets would hold the Penguins scoreless in the third period to win 4-1.

     

    Dallas Stars v. Washington Capitals – 7p EST Start Time

    After going almost scoreless for two periods, the Detroit Red Wings would score with five seconds left in the second period to take the 1-0 lead off of a Filip Hronek goal. However, going into the third period it would be all Anaheim as the Ducks would get three unanswered goals from Rickard Rakell, Nick Ritchie, and Jakob Silfverberg to collect the 3-1 victory.

    San Jose Sharks v. Nashville Predators – 8p EST Start Time

    Looking for their first win of the season the San Jose Sharks travel to Nashville hoping to feast on the Predators. However, it would be the Predators who would takedown the Sharks instead as they got a two goal game from Roman Josi, as well as goals from Kyle Turris, Filip Forsberg, and Dante Fabbro to secure a 5-2 victory. the Sharks would get their goals from Evander Kane, who was returning from his three game suspension, and Brent Burns.

     

    Los Angeles Kings v. Calgary Flames – 9p EST Start Time

    In Calgary the Flames host the Los Angeles Kings as they look to get themselves in the win column, and through two periods it would be tightly contested but with the Kings with the slight edge on the score board. While the Flames got second period goals from Matthew Tkachuk and Mikael Backlund, it would be first period goals from Tyler Toffoli and Sean Walker, and a second period goal from Ilya Kovalchuk to give the Kings the 3-2 lead going into the second intermission. Then in the third period with a 64 seconds left in regulation Matthew Tkachuk would score his second of the game to tie it a three and send the game into overtime, but it would be Drew Doughty to end it in 50 seconds to give the Los Angeles Kings the 4-3 overtime victory.

     

    Boston Bruins v. Vegas Golden Knights – 10p EST Start Time

    In Vegas the Boston Bruins would make their third stop of their four game road trip to start the season, and right away the Golden Knights would get the jump on the Bruins with two goals in the first half of the first period from Mark Stone and Reilly Smith. But then in the second half of the first period the Bruins would come back with goals from David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand to tie the game a two going into the first intermission. Then in the second period the Bruins would get another goal from Marchand 33 seconds into the period, and then a little less than two minutes later David Backes would score to make it 4-2 for the Bruins. In the third period the Golden Knights would get a powerplay goal from Max Pacioretty to cut the deficit to one, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Bruins would go on to win 4-3.

    Tampa Bay Lightning v. Carolina Hurricanes – 5p EST Start Time

    After coming back a from a two goal deficit the night before in Washington, the Carolina Hurricanes would bring the magic back for a second consecutive night as they took on the Tampa Bay Lightning. After getting a goal from Brett Pesce in the first 1:14, the Hurricanes would give up three unanswered goals by the Lightning when Tyler Johnson, Kevin Shattenkirk and Steven Stamkos to gain a 3-1 lead heading into the first intermission. However, the Hurricanes would climb back as they would get goals from Erik Haula (second period PPG) and Dougie Hamilton (third period PPG) to tie the game and send the game to overtime. Once into overtime the Hurricanes would only need 1:53 of the extra frame as Jaccob Slavin would score to give the Hurricanes their second straight come from behind overtime victory.

     

    Dallas Stars v. Detroit Red Wings – 7p EST Start Time

    Heading to Detroit the Dallas Stars look for their first victory of their very young 2019-20 season, and a quick jump on the Red Wings would help them early on as they would get first period goals from Roope Hintz and Tyler Seguin to give the Stars a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission. In the second period it would become the Anthony Mantha show as he would score two goals to tie the game for the Red Wings. Mantha’s first goal would be on the powerplay and 48 seconds into the period. Then Mantha would score again nine minutes later to tie the game. In the third period Mantha would score 15 seconds into the period to complete the natural hat trick, but Roope Hintz would score his second of the game 33 seconds late tie the game back up at three. However, it would be Anthony Mantha once again as he would record his fourth goal of the game to lead the Red Wings to a 4-3 victory over the Stars.

     

    Winnipeg Jets v. New York Islanders – 7p EST Start Time

    The New York Islanders would host a defensively depleted Winnipeg Jets team who would lose Josh Morrissey due to an upper body injury during pregame warmups. The first period neither team would get on the board, but in the second period the Islanders would get three unanswered goals from Josh Bailey (PPG), Brock Nelson, and Anders Lee to give them a commanding 3-0 lead. However, before the end of the second Patrik Laine would get the Jets on the board to cut the Islanders lead to two. However, to start the third period the Islanders would score early to regain their three goal lead when Anthony Beauvillier scored 1:25 into the third period, and that’s all they would need to secure their first victory of the 2019-20 season.

The Leafs would get their goals from Alexander Kerfoot, Trevor Moore, William Nylander, and a pair from Auston Matthews, while the Canadiens would get their goals from Jonathan Drouin, Brendan Gallagher, Jeff Petry, and Phillip Danault.

    The New York Rangers would get a hat trick from Mika Zibanejad after he would score a powerplay goal, even strength, and shorthanded goal to help lead the Rangers to a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators. Rangers also got a powerplay goal from Artemi Panarin, which Zibanejad assisted on, while the Senators got their lone goal Brady Tkachuk.

     

    Tampa Bay Lightning v. Florida Panthers – 7p EST Start Time

    In a tightly contested matchup, the Florida Panthers would defeat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 after getting a hat trick from Mike Hoffman (2 PPG’s and 1 ESG) and a goal from Noel Acciari. The Lightning would get their goals from Gemel Smith, Steven Stamkos, and Mathieu Joseph.

    In a wild west matchup the Edmonton Oilers would host the Los Angeles Kings in what one would describe as a scoring festival. For the Kings they would get goals from Dustin Brown, Trevor Lewis, Anze Kopitar, Michael Amadio, and Drew Doughty, while the Oilers would get a pair of goals from James Neal, and goals from Connor McDavid, Zack Kassian, Joakim Nygard, and Darnell Nurse. Once the dust settled and the final buzzer sounded it would be the Oilers holding off the Kings with a 6-5 victory.

    Carolina Hurricanes (1-0-0 2pts) v. Washington Capitals (2-0-0 4pts)

     

    Game Recap:

    The Washington Capitals look to keep their winning ways going as they play their first game of the season at home against the Carolina Hurricanes. For the majority of the first period the Hurricanes would generate chances against the Capitals, but Braden Holtby would stand tall in net for the Capitals. Then late in the period Garnet Hathaway would pick off a poor pass attempt by Joel Edmundson and then drive to the net to score his first as Capital and to give them the 1-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

     

    In the second period the Capitals would still have some time to work on their first powerplay opportunity, but would not be able to convert. Then they would gain another opportunity when Jordan Staal would be called for tripping, but again could not convert on the powerplay. However, midway through the second it would be TJ Oshie who would bat the puck down and then get it past James Reimer to give the Capitals a 2-0 lead after an Official review. The Capitals would try to make it 3-0 off another potential Hathaway goal, but after a Coach’s Challenge it was ruled that Brendan Leipsic did in fact interfere with Reimer, and the goal would not count as a result.

     

    Then in the third period Radko Gudas would take an interference penalty and the Hurricanes would finally get their powerplay on point as Erik Haula would tap in a Teuvu Teravainen pass past Braden Holtby to cut the Capitals lead to one. The after killing off a Tom Wilson penalty, the Capitals would have a breakdown in their own zone and Jaccob Slavin would capitalize by getting the puck past Holtby to tie the game at two. Then in overtime the Capitals would dominate with 7 shots on goal and a powerplay opportunity, but were unable to capitalize. However, for the Hurricanes they would only need one shot to win it as Jake Gardiner would wrist a shot past Holtby to win the game 3-2 in overtime.

    This is it. The night Capitals’ fans have been anticipating for months. The Home Opener. Although this is the third game the Washington Capitals will have played thus far, the Home Opener is the first opportunity for fans to watch their favorite team play at home, which always has a special feel to it. Last season, the Capitals raised their Stanley Cup Champions banner, made us all cry, and shut out the Boston Bruins 7-0 on the night of their home opener. This time, the boys in red are looking to Rock the Red and to defeat the team that knocked them out in the first round of the playoffs this past April; Rod Brind’amour and his Carolina Hurricanes.

    Last night, the Washington Capitals beat their former bench boss Barry Trotz and his New York Islanders, 2-1 in regulation. Ilya Samsonov, in his NHL debut, and first NHL win, proved that he is indeed NHL caliber, and the future of Capitals goal-tending. The young Russian net-minder stopped 25 of 26 shots faced, and remained calm, cool, and very collected between the pipes. Samsonov did not let the rambunctious and passionate Isles hometown fan base distract or divert his attention away from the task at hand. Jakub Vrana scored his second goal of the season halfway through the first period, but one fluke of a goal two minutes later tied the game 1-1. TJ Oshie would ultimately score the game-winning goal on the Capitals’ power play late in the second. The Capitals played extremely well, sans a couple of bad passes, and extended defensive zone play early in the third period. Playing two games in as many nights is certainly not an easy feat, and the Capitals will have to dig deep tonight to come out with a win for the fans, and to downgrade a gritty, dirty Hurricanes team. As tonight’s game will be the second game of a back-to-back, Braden Holtby is expected to start for the Washington Capitals.

    Capitals veteran goaltender Braden Holtby will start versus the Carolina Hurricanes.

    The Carolina Hurricanes won their first game of the 2019-20 season on home ice at PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina. Lucas Wallmark put Carolina on the board first, and rookie Martin Necas gave the Canes a short-lived 2-0 lead. Montreal would score 3 unanswered goals in the second period, but former Vegas center Erik Haula managed to tie the game at three goals apiece early in the final frame. In a nerve-wracking 4-3 shootout win over the Montreal Canadiens, it was Dougie Hamilton that would set off the Storm Surge in Raleigh. Through two preseason games, the Hurricanes actually out-shot the Capitals 45-43, but lost both, separated by just a single goal. Carolinas’ Dynamic Finnish Duo of Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen scored a combined 51 goals and tallied 108 assists for a total of 159 points last season. The two also led the team in short-handed goals with 4 from Aho, and 1 from Teravainen, and finished the season with +/- ratings of +25 and +30, respectively. Last season, versus the Capitals, Aho scored 3 goals and tallied 3 assists, and Teravainen, 1 goal and 1 assist (Sebastian Aho)(Teuvo Teravainen). To say that these two can, and have, done damage against the Capitals in recent times is definitely an understatement, but man, are they fun to watch (as long as they aren’t playing the Caps). Goaltender Petr Mrazek, in his second season with the Carolina Hurricanes, stopped 33 of 36 shots he faced, and is expected to get the start for the Canes in tonight’s contest (TheScore, Mrazek).

    Capitals head coach Todd Reirden still hasn’t forgiven, and probably won’t, Canes head coach Rod Brind’amour for his inappropriate and childish exchange from the Canes bench with Caps’ hard hitter Tom Wilson last Sunday. Reirden did not miss his chance to express his discontent, despite the Hurricanes’ head coach making a bee-line for the dressing room following the final buzzer (Brandt). Wilson ultimately received a 10 minute misconduct penalty, and an additional two minutes for roughing, in an already-penalty heavy scrappy preseason game. Between both clubs, 44 penalty minutes were tallied, and 48 hits were committed. It should be noted that 71% of those hits were made by Capitals’ players (TheScore, WAS v CAR). We expect tonight’s match-up to be just as physical, with lots of bad blood between the former Stanley Cup Champs and a team that made the playoffs for the first time in 10 years last spring. We firmly believe that those recent interactions will serve as a strong motivator for the Capitals.

    News:

    • The Chicago Blackhawks re-signed forward Alex DeBrincat to a new three year deal. The contract will run through the 2022-23 season and will carry an AAV of $6.4mil.

     

    • Per Andrew Gross of Newsday, New York Islanders General Manager Lou Lamoriello confirmed that Josh Ho-Sang’s representative has requested a trade. Per Gross’ report Lamoriello has asked Ho-Sang to not report to Bridgeport of the AHL until he can explore all options.

     

    • The Calgary Flames have announced that they have re-signed General Manager Brad Treliving to a multi-year extension.

    Florida Panthers v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 7p EST Start Time

    In the first battle of Florida for the 2019-20 season it would see the Tampa Bay Lightning down the Florida Panthers 5-2 in the Lightning’s home opener. The Lightning would get goals from Nikita Kucherov, Kevin Shattenkirk, Ondrej Palat, Pat Maroon, and Erik Cernak while the Panthers would get goals from Mike Hoffman and Vincent Trocheck.

     

    Montreal Canadiens v. Carolina Hurricanes – 7p EST Start Time

    In Carolina the Hurricanes would host the Montreal Canadiens for their home opener and this would be the first game of the 2019-20 NHL season to go to a shootout after being tied 3-3 after 65 minutes of action. The Huricanes would get goals from Linus Wallmark, Martin Necas, and Erik Haula while the Canadiens would get goals from Tomas Tatar, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, and Jordan Weal in regulation. Dougie Hamilton would score in the first round of the shootout and Petr Mrazek would stop all three shooters to win the game for the Hurricanes 4-3.

     

    Winnipeg Jets v. New York Rangers – 7p EST Start Time

    In a matchup everyone has been waiting since the trade between these two teams, the New York Rangers hosted the Winnipeg Jets for their home opener, and would win 6-4 in a very tightly contested game between the two teams. The Rangers would get goals from newcomers Artemi Panarin (signed from Columbus) and Jacob Trouba (Trade with Winnipeg) as well as goals from Marc Staal, Mika Zibanejad, Brett Howden, and Brendan Smith. The Jets would get goals from Mark Scheifele, Kyle Connor, and a pair from Blake Wheeler.

     

    Buffalo Sabres v. Pittsburgh Penguins – 7p EST Start Time

    The Buffalo Sabres entered their 50th season by visiting the Pittsburgh Penguins, and they would spoil the home opener for the Penguins as they would get two goals from former Penguin Conor Sheary, and a late second period goal from Rasmus Dahlin to defeat the Penguins 3-1. The Penguins lone goal would be from Evgeni Malkin on an early second period powerplay.

     

    Minnesota Wild v. Nashville Predators – 8p EST Start Time

    The Nashville Predators would open up their season by hosting the Minnesota Wild, and the Predators would dominate the Wild 5-2 after scoring four unanswered goals in the third period to erase a one goal deficit for the victory. The Wild would get goals from Jason Zucker and Matt Dumba in a 43 second span late in the second period to make it 2-1 after Ryan Ellis initially gave the PRedators the one nothing lead. The Predators four third period goals would come from Markus Granlund, Austin Watson, Viktor Arvidsson, and Filip Forsberg.

     

    Boston Bruins v. Dallas Stars – 830p EST Start Time

    After having a special ceremonial puck drop with the 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush, the Stars would be dimmed by the visiting Boston Bruins as the Bruins would get two first period goals from Brett Ritchie and Danton Heinen within the first six minutes to guarantee them victory. The Stars lone goal of the 2-1 loss was from Roope Hintz.

     

    Calgary Flames v. Colorado Avalanche – 9p EST Start Time

    In the Colorado Avalanche’s home opener against the Calgary Flames it would be Mikko Rantanen netting two goals for the Avalanche along with goals from Joonas Donskoi, who also scored two, and JT Compher to secure the 5-3 victory over the Flames. The Flames would get goals from Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, and Mark Giordano.

     

    Arizona Coyotes v. Anaheim Ducks – 10p EST Start Time

    In our final game of NHL action for the night the Anaheim Ducks would hold of the Arizona Coyotes with a 2-1 victory after Cam Fowler would score with 32 seconds left in the second period to break the 1-1 tie. Ducks would also get a goal from Derek Grant, while the Coyotes got their lone goal from Derek Stepan.

    2019-20 Preview:

    After being one of the best stories of the 2018-19 season, the Carolina Hurricanes reinvigorated their franchise, along with some excellent “Bunch of Jerks” marketing thanks to Don Cherry, the Hurricanes stormed their way to the Eastern Conference Finals where they would eventually fall to the Boston Bruins.

     

    For the Hurricanes they did some minor tinkering to their lineup. The re-signed forward Sebastian Aho and goalie Petr Mrazek, and then traded for goalie James Reimer, and forward Erik Haula. Then the signing of forward Ryan Dzingel helped solidify their offense in the top six.

     

    The Hurricanes will look to duplicate their success this past season in the 2019-20 season, and they have the ingredients to do so. It’s up to them to continue to grow and evolve their game, and keep skating in the right direction.

    Breaking News: Justin Williams Taking Time Off – Not Expected to Start the Season

    In shocking news today Carolina Hurricanes captain announced that he will not be joining the team for the start of the 2019-20 season and will be taking a break from hockey instead.

     

    This news comes at a time when all teams are starting to gear up for Training Camp to prepare for the upcaming season. In a statement releaed by the Hurricanes, Williams had the following to say:

    “This is the first time in my life that I’ve felt unsure of my aspirations with regards to hockey. For as long as I can remember, my whole off-season until this point has been hockey and doing what was necessary to prepare for the upcoming season. Because of my current indecision, and without the type of mental and physical commitment that I’m accustomed to having, I’ve decided to step away from the game.

    “It’s important to me that the focus of attention is on the current, very talented group the Carolina Hurricanes have assembled, as they prepare to build on the momentum and growth we established last season.”

     

    Williams, who is 37 years old, has played in 1244 career NHL games with the Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings, and Washington Capitals. Williams is also a three time Stanley Cup Champion with Carolina (2006) and with Los Angeles (2012 and 2014), and won the Conn Smythe in 2014. Williams also recorded 312 goals, 474 assists for 786 points in his NHL career.

     

    Of the decision, Hurricanes President and General Manager had the following to say:

    “We appreciate Justin’s honesty and openness throughout this process, and respect his decision.He’s been an important part of our team, but we did prepare our roster with the understanding that he might step away. We are confident in the group we’ve assembled.”

     

    Only time will tell in regards to what Williams will ultimately decide to do, but whatever he chooses to do he knows it will be right in his heart.
