    NHL Stars of the Week – Markstrom Earns Top Honors

    Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of February 5th through 11th.

    First Star – Jacob Markstrom (G – CAL)

    • Jacob Markstrom would go a perfect 3-0-0 with 2.00 goals against average and a .939 save percentage in three games played for the Calgary Flames. Markstrom would open up his week with 21 saves in a 4-1 victory over Boston on Feb. 6th, and then on Feb. 8th he would make 37 saves in a 5-3 victory over New Jersey. Then to close out the week Markstrom would make 35 saves in a 5-2 victory over the New York Islanders on Feb. 10th.

    Second Star – Sergei Bobrovsky (G – FLA)

    • Sergei Bobrovsky would go 2-0-0 with a 1.00 goals against average, a .966 save percentage, and one shutout in two games played for the Florida Panthers. On Feb. 8th Bobrovsky would make 21 saves in a 4-2 victory over Washington. Then on Feb. 10th he would make 35 saves in a 4-0 shutout victory over Colorado.

    Third Star – Nick Suzuki (C – MON)

    • Nick Suzuki would record four goals and two assists for six points in three games played for the Montreal Canadiens. Suzuki would open up his week with two goals and an assist in a 5-2 victory over Washington on Feb. 6th, and then on Feb. 10th he would record a goal and an assist in a 3-2 loss to Dallas. The on Feb. 11th Suzuki would end the week with one goal in a 7-2 loss to St. Louis.

      • Grzelcyk would be fined $5,000 for spearing Washington Capitals forward Max Pacioretty on Saturday afternoon.
      • The fine would be the maximum allowed per the CBA.

    • The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that they offered Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly an in-person hearing.
      • The hearing will take place on Tuesday afternoon, and will be in regard to Rielly’s cross check to the head of Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig on Saturday night.

    • Minnesota and Boston would make a trade.
      • Boston would acquire forward Susanna Tapani and defender Abby Cook.
      • Minnesota would acquire defender Sophie Jaques.

    St. Louis Blues v. Montreal Canadiens – 1p ET

    • In Montreal for a Super Sunday early afternoon matinee, the Canadiens would play host to the St. Louis Blues, and in the first period Nick Suzuki would score for the Habs, but goals from Alexey Toropchenko, Colton Parayko, and Jordan Kyrou would give the Blues the 3-1 lead. In the second period Nathan Walker would score to grow the Blues lead to three. Then in the third period Joel Armia would score for the Habs, but goals from Robert Thomas, Jake Neighbours, and Kyrou would give the Blues the 7-2 victory over the Canadiens.

    Vancouver Canucks v. Washington Capitals – 130p ET

    • The Vancouver Canucks would come to the Nation’s Capital to take on the Washington Capitals for the only other game of the day, and in the first period Nic Dowd would score in the opening minutes of the game to give the Caps the 1-0 lead, but Conor Garland would strike later in the period to tie the game at one for the Canucks. In the second period Alex Ovechkin would score in his fifth straight game to give the Caps the lead back, but a little over a minute later Nils Hoglander would score to tie the game back up at two for the Canucks. Then after a scoreless third period JT Miller would score with 4.8 seconds left in overtime to give the Canucks the 3-2 victory over the Capitals.

    • The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that they have suspended Vancouver Canucks defenseman Nikita Zadorov.
      • Zadorov would be suspended for two games for an illegal check to the head of Detroit Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond on Saturday (Feb. 10th) afternoon.
      • Per the terms of the CBA, and based on his average annual salary, Zadorov will forfeit $39,062.50.

    St. Louis Blues v. Buffalo Sabres – 1p ET

    • In Buffalo for one of four early afternoon matinee game, the Sabres would play host to the St. Louis Blues, and in the first period Jake Neighbours would score to give the Blues the 1-0 lead. In the second period Kyle Okposo would score to tie the game at one for the Sabres, but Jordan Kyrou would score to retake the lead for the Blues. Then in the third period Neighbours would net his second of the game to give the Blues the 3-1 victory over the Sabres.

    Vancouver Canucks v. Detroit Red Wings – 1p ET

    • In Detroit the Vancouver Canucks would come to town to take on the Red Wings, and in the first period Lucas Raymond would score to give the Wings the 1-0 lead. In the second period Nils Hoglander, Filip Hronek , and Elias Pettersson would score to give the Canucks the 3-1 lead. Both Hronek and Pettersson would record two assists in the period as well. Then in the third period Daniel Sprong and Michael Rasmussen would score to tie the game at three for the Wings to force overtime. In the extra frame Jake Walman would score on a penalty shot 23 seconds in to give the Red Wings the 4-3 overtime comeback victory over the Canucks.

    Dallas Stars v. Montreal Canadiens – 1p ET

    • In Montreal the Canadiens would faceoff with the Dallas Stars, and after a scoreless first period Nick Suzuki would open up the scoring for the Habs, but Thomas Harley would score and Tyler Seguin would net a pair of goals to give the Stars the 3-1 lead. However, before the end of the second period Juraj Slafkovsky would score to get the Habs back within one. Then we would have a scoreless third period as the Stars would hold on to defeat the Canadiens 3-2.

    Calgary Flames v. New York Islanders – 1p ET

    • On Long Island the New York Islanders would play host to the Calgary Flames, and in the first period MacKenzie Weegar would score to give the Flames the 1-0 lead. In the second period Jonathan Huberdeau would score and Weegar would net his second of the game to grow the Flames lead to three. Then in the third period Brock Nelson and Jean-Gabriel Pageau would score for the Isles, but Blake Coleman would score and Weegar would get the empty netter to complete the hat trick as the Flames would go on to defeat the Islanders 5-2.

    Washington Capitals v. Boston Bruins – 330p ET

    • In Boston for an afternoon matinee the Washington Capitals would come to town to take on the Bruins, and after a scoreless first period TJ Oshie would strike on the powerplay to give the Caps the 1-0 lead. Then in the third period Dylan Strome would net his 20th of the season and Alex Ovechkin would get the empty netter for his 834th career goal to give the Capitals the 3-0 victory over the Bruins. Charlie Lindgren would stop all 18 shots faced for the shutout.

    Colorado Avalanche v. Florida Panthers – 6p ET

    • In Florida the Panthers would take on the Colorado Avalanche, and in the first period Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart would both strike on the powerplay to give the Panthers the 2-0 lead. In the second period Eetu Luostarinen would score to grow the Panthers lead to three. Then in the third period Aleksander Barkov would score to give the Panthers the 4-0 victory over the Avalanche. Sergei Bobrovsky would stop all 35 shots faced for the shutout.

    New Jersey Devils v. Carolina Hurricanes – 7p ET

    • In Carolina the Hurricanes go back in time for their annual Whalers Night as they host the New Jersey Devils, and after a scoreless 60 minutes of hockey this game would require extra time. 3:40 into the extra frame Sebastian Aho would score to give the Whalers/Hurricanes the 1-0 overtime victory over the Devils. Vitek Vanecek would stop 32 of 33 shots for the Devils while Pyotr Kochetkov would stop all 34 shots faced for the shutout.

    Tampa Bay Lightning v. Columbus Blue Jackets – 7p ET

    • In Columbus the Tampa Bay Lightning would come to town to battle the Blue Jackets, and in the first period Nick Paul would score to give the Bolts the 1-0 lead. In the second period Anthony Cirelli would strike to grow the Bolts lead to two. Then in the third period Steven Stamkos would score on the powerplay to give the Lightning the 3-0 lead, but Boone Jenner would score a pair of goals to get the Jackets back within one. However, Brandon Hagel would get the empty netter to give the Lightning the 4-2 victory over the Blue Jackets.

    Toronto Maple Leafs v. Ottawa Senators – 7p ET

    • In Ottawa the Senators would faceoff with the Toronto Maple Leafs for Hockey Night in Canada, and in the first period both teams would score as Auston Matthews would open the scoring for the Leafs, but Claude Giroux would score for the Sens for the 1-1 tie. In the second period Matthew Knies would score for the Leafs, but goals from Vladimir Tarasenko, Shane Pinto, and Josh Norris would give the Sens the 4-2 lead. Then in the third period Max Domi would score for the Leafs to get back within one, but Ridley Greig would get the empty netter to give the Senators the 5-3 victory over the Maple Leafs.

    Seattle Kraken v. Philadelphia Flyers – 7p ET

    • In Philadelphia the Flyers would take on the Seattle Kraken, and in the first period Matty Beniers would score for the Kraken, but goals from Scott Laughton and Ryan Poehling would give the Flyers the 2-1 lead. Then after a scoreless second period Jared McCann would score to tie the game at two for the Kraken, but Sean Couturier would score to give the Flyers the 3-2 victory over the Kraken.

    Pittsburgh Penguins v. Winnipeg Jets – 7p ET

    • In Winnipeg the Pittsburgh Penguins would come to town to faceoff with the Jets, and in the first period Mark Scheifele and Nino Niederreiter would score to give the Jets the 2-0 lead. In the second period Bryan Rust would score for the Pens to get back within one. Then in the third period the Jets would be able to hold the Penguins at bay as they would take this game 2-1.

      Vancouver Canucks v. Boston Bruins – 7p ET

      • In Boston, the Bruins hosted the Canucks and in the first Brad Marchand scored a shorthanded goal to give Boston the early 1-0 lead just 32 seconds into the period and then Danton Heinen scored a shorthanded goal of his own to give the Bruins the 2-0 lead. In the second, Morgan Geekie nets his ninth of the year early in the frame to put make it a 3-0 lead for Boston and then Pavel Zacha scored his 12th of the to make it a 4-0 lead. With no goals scored in the third period, the Bruins went on to get the 4-0 shutout victory over the Canucks.

      Washington Capitals v. Florida Panthers – 7p ET

      • In South Florida, the Panthers welcomed the Capitals and in the first Washington took the 1-0 lead with a power play goal from Alex Ovechkin. In the second, Matthew Tkachuk scored his 17th goal of the year to even the score for Florida but then Anthony Mantha scored his 16th of the year to put the Capitals back in the lead. Then, Sam Reinhart re-tied the contest with a power play goal, his 38th goal of the season. In the third, Florida took control of the game when Ryan Lomberg scored his third of the year and then Eetu Luostarinen scored an empty net goal to give the Panthers the 4-2 win over the Capitals.

      Calgary Flames v. New Jersey Devils – 7p ET

      • In New Jersey, the Devils hosted the Flames and in the first Ondrej Palat scored his seventh of the year to put New Jersey in the lead but then Mikael Backlund scored his 11th of the year to tie the contest for Calgary. In the second, the Flames took the 2-1 lead with Connor Zary’s 12th goal of the year. In the third, Calgary took the 3-1 lead when Kevin Rooney scored his first of the year but then the Devils got within a goal when Nico Hischier scored a shorthanded goal. Then, Andrei Kuzmenko scored his 10th of the year to give Calgary the two goal lead once more. Ondrej Palat then scored his second goal of the night to brink New Jersey once more but then Andrew Mangiapane scored an empty net contest to give the Flames the 5-3 victory over the Devils.

      Winnipeg Jets v. Philadelphia Flyers – 7p ET

      • In Philadelphia, the Flyers hosted the Jets and in the first Tyson Forester scored his 10th of the year to put Philadelphia up 1-0 and then Travis Konecny scored his 24th of the year to give the Flyers the 2-0. Then, Morgan Frost scored his eighth to give Philly the 3-0 lead. In the second, Ryan Poehling scored his sixth, with the Flyers shorthanded, to make it a 4-0 lead. In the third, Winnipeg got on the board when Kyle Connor scored his 19th of the year put the Flyers got the 4-1 victory over the Jets.

      Tampa Bay Lightning v. New York Islanders – 8p ET

      • In Long Island, the Islanders welcomed the Lightning and in the first Noah Dobson scored his seventh of the year to put New York up 1-0 but then Tampa Bay tied the contest when Nikita Kucherov scored his 33rd of the year. Then, Mathew Barzal scored his 15th to give the Isles the lead back and then Kyle Palmieri scored his 14th to put New York up 3-1. In the second, Brandon Hagel scored a power play goal to bring the Bolts within a goal but then Ryan Pulock scored a power play goal of his own to give New York the two goal lead back. Bo Horvat then scored his 21st to give the Isles the three goal lead and then Casey Cizikas scored his sixth of the year to give the Islanders the 6-2 win over the Lightning following a scoreless third period.

      Colorado Avalanche v. Carolina Hurricanes – 8p ET

      • In Raleigh, the Hurricanes hosted the Avalanche and in the first Martin Necas scored three unanswered goals, getting the hat trick, to put Carolina up 3-0 and then Colorado got on the board when Zach Parise scored his first of the year. Then, the Avs got within a goal when Samuel Girard scored his third of the year. In the second, Michael Bunting’s 11th goal of the year gave the Canes the two goal lead. In the third, Seth Jarvis was credited with his 16th of the year and gave the Hurricanes the 5-2 victory over the Avalanche.

      • The NHL announced that the 2025 Winter Classic will take place at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
        • The Blackhawks will play host to the St. Louis Blues in the outdoor game.
        • This will mark the seventh outdoor game for the Blackhawks (1-5-0), and the third for the Blues (2-0-0).
        • This will mark the second time the Blues and Blackhawks will faceoff in the Winter Classic (2017 at Busch Stadium).

      • At Madison Square Garden the New York Rangers would play host to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and after a scoreless first period Jimmy Vesey would net his tenth of the season and Jonny Brodzinski would score to give the Rangers the 2-0 lead. Then in the third period Brandon Hagel would score for the Bolts, but Vesey’s second of the game would give the Rangers the 3-1 victory over the Lightning.

      • In the Garden, the Rangers welcomed the Avalanche back to New York City. In the first period, a late goal from Nathan MacKinnon put Colorado up 1-0. In the third, Artemi Panarin scored his 31st of the year to even the score for New York. In overtime, Alexis Lafrenière scored his 13th of the year as the Rangers got the 2-1 win over the Avalanche

      New York Islanders v. Toronto Maple Leafs – 7p ET

      • In Toronto, the Maple Leafs hosted the Islanders and in the first a goal from Mathew Barzal gave New York the 1-0 lead. In the second, Mitch Marner scored his 21st goal on the year to tie the contest for Toronto but then Kyle MacLean scored his first career NHL goal to put the Isles back in the lead. In the third, John Tavares scored on the power play to tie the game for Toronto but then Pierre Engvall scored the game winner as the Islanders downed the Maple Leafs 3-2.

Then after a scoreless second period Lexie Adzija and Savannah Harmon would score to give Ottawa the three goal lead, but goals from Abby Roque, Jade Downie-Landry, and Alex Carpenter would tie the game at three for New York to force overtime. In the extra frame Carpenter would net her second of the game and fifth of the season to give New York the 4-3 overtime comeback victory over Ottawa.
