  • Washington Capitals Coach Preview

    WAS

With the 2018-19 season getting ready to begin, we are going to take a more in depth look at the Washington Capitals and see how they stand and what the lineup could, or should, look like. In today’s article we will be looking at the coach for the Capitals.

    Todd Reirdon:

1st Season as an NHL Head Coach

This will be Todd Reirdon’s first foray as an NHL head coach, but familiarity will be on his side as he takes over a team that he has been an assistant/associate coach the past four seasons under the recently departed Barry Trotz. Reirdon, who ran thw defense for the Capitals, will have a smooth transition due to his familiarity with this team, but he will have the daunting task of taking over the defending Stanley Cup Champions and will look to become one of very few to take over the defending champions and lead them to a second consecutive Cup after the original head coach left.

Tomorrow live on TXHT we will have our Washington Capitals Preview focusing on the Washington Capitals.

  • Washington Capitals Goalies Preview

    WAS

With the 2018-19 season getting ready to begin, we are going to take a more in depth look at the Washington Capitals and see how they stand and what the lineup could, or should, look like. In today’s article we will be looking at the goalies for the Capitals.

    Braden Holtby:

    2017-18 Regular Season Stats:

    54 GP     34-16-4      1648 SA      153 GA        2.99 GAA        .907 S%

    2018 Playoff Stats:

    23 GP     16-7     2 SO      639 SA       50 GA       2.16 GAA       .922 S%

Last season was not Braden Holtby’s best regular season, but having Philipp Grubauer around to take some of the load off of his shoulders was a great way for Holtby to get himself refocused going into the playoffs. Holtby is without a doubt the number one guy between the pipes for the Capitals, and he will be looking to have a stronger overall season this year.

    Pheonix Copley:

    2017-18 AHL Season:

    41 GP      15-17-6     2.91 GAA      .896 S%

The Capitals brass have decided that this season Pheonix Copley will be the back up to Holtby after trading Grubauer to Colorade at the NHL Draft. Having struggled in the AHL, one has to wonder if Copley will be able to handle the pressure of being an NHL back up.

    Ilya Samsonov:

    2017-18 KHL Season:

    26 GP     12-9-1       2.31 GAA        .926 S%

After spending the past three seasons with Magnitogorsk of the KHL, Samsonov is now making the move to North America to become a top netminder in the NHL. As the top prospect for the Capitals, there is a very good chance that if he picks up on the North American style quickly in the AHL, he could usurp Copley as the back up goalie to Holtby.

Tomorrow on TXHTHockey.com we will have our Washington Capitals Coaches Preview focusing on the coaching staff for the Capitals.

  • Washington Capitals Defense Preview

    WAS

With the 2018-19 season getting ready to begin, we are going to take a more in depth look at the Washington Capitals and see how they stand and what the lineup could, or should, look like. In today’s article we will be looking at the defensive pairings for the Capitals.

    Pairing One:

    Michal Kempny – John Carlson

Once deemed expendable by Chicago to becoming a Stanley Cup Champion, Michal Kempny, who was acquired at the Trade Deadline, quickly slotted himself alongside John Carlson, and the two became an amazing pair that complimented themselves. Both Kempny and Carlson are going to look to continue to grow as a defensive duo, and build upon what they started wen Kempny came to the Capitals.

    Pairing Two:

    Dmitry Orlov – Matt Niskanen

Last season Dmitry Orlov and Matt Niskanen were the most consistent defensive pair for the Capitals, but they also had their headaches too in regards to turnovers and poor executions. Niskanen and Orlov will have a lot that they will need to work on this season to improve upon last season, but this pair is definitely an important pair for the Capitals.

    Pairing Three:

    Christian Djoos – Brooks Orpik

Last Season Christian Djoos and Madison Bowey spent time learning under Brooks Orpik, but it would be Djoos who’d play 22 of the 24 playoff games that the Capitals would play, while Bowey watched all 24 games from the press box. This season it is expected that Djoos will be on the third pair Orpik, with Bowey as the team’s seventh defenseman and will possibly split time with Orpik as a way to giving the kids more opportunity this season.

Tomorrow on TXHTHockey.com we will have our Washington Capitals Goalies Preview focusing on the goaltenders for the Capitals.

  • Washington Capitals Forwards Preview Part 2

    WAS

With the 2018-19 season getting ready to begin, we are going to take a more in depth look at the Washington Capitals and see how they stand and what the lineup could, or should, look like. In today’s article we will be looking at the third and fourth forward lines for the Capitals.

    Third Line:

Andre Burakovsky – Lars Eller – Brett Connolly

During the playoffs both Lars Eller and Brett Connolly were clutch players for the Capitals as the elevated their play as the team got deeper into the playoffs. Andre Burakovsky had yet another injury plagued season marked with inconsistency, yet he meshed very well with Eller and Connolly. Plus knowing that Eller is a good stand in if either or Nicklas Backstrom or Evgeny Kuznetsov go down to injury, and if that happens then if Burakovsky can stay healthy and play consistently, then he too could be elevated to a higher role if needed. Also having Burakovsky on the third line with Eller and Connolly is a positive for both him and the line.

    Fourth Line:

Jakub Vrana – Nic Dowd – Devante Smith-Pelly

Devante Smith-Pelly was spectacular in the playoffs for the Capitals as he scored multiple clutch and game winning goals to help guide the Capitals to their first Stanley Cup. Nic Dowd, who was signed as a free agent from Vancouver, will be entering his first season with the Capitals and will be looking to fill the fourth line center role that was left vacant when Jay Beagle signed with Vancouver over the summer. If Dowd can get a defined role on the team he will excel and grow like the way Eller, Connolly, and others have the past few seasons. Now as for Jakub Vrana is that he needs to build chemistry with the team. He is a talented player, but his chemistry with others needs work. Having Vrana on the fourth line will also add some speed, playmaking, and some more scoring.

Tomorrow on TXHTHockey.com we will have our Washington Capitals Defense Preview focusing on all three defensive pairings for the Capitals.

  • NHL News and Notes for September 21st, 2018

These are your news and notes from the NHL for September 21st…

    In pre-season action:

    • Washington Capitals LW Alex Ovechkin looked to be in mid-season form in his preseason debut in the Capitals 5-2 loss against the Montreal Canadiens in a contest that took place at Videotron Centre in Quebec City, Quebec. In addition to the Ovechkin debut, fellow linemates, Evgeny Kuznetsov and Tom Wilson, also made their pre-season debuts for the Capitals.
    • Ilya Kovalchuk a goal in a 7-2 loss against the Vegas Golden Knights at Staples Center. This was Kovalchuk’s first goal in an NHL uniform since April 25, 2013, when Kovalchuk was a member of the New Jersey Devils.
    • New York Islanders F Kieffer Bellows is showing that he is ready for the NHL.  Bellows, the 19th pick of the 2016 NHL Draft, scored his second goal of the preseason in a 2-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils at Barclays Center.  Bellows scored this goal on a power-play late in the first period.
    • Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid recorded four points, one goal and three assists,  in a 7-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets at Rogers Place.  McDavid and his linemates, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Ty Rattie, combined to record five goals and 11 points.  Rattie had two goals and three assists whereas Nugent-Hopkins scored two goals.

    Dimtry Orlov – Matt Niskanen

Warren Foegele – Martin Necas – Teuvo Teravainen

Valentin Zykov – Sebastian Aho – Andrei Svechnikov

    Jaccob Slavin – Dougie Hamilton

Calvin de Haan – Justin Faulk

    Hayden Fluery – Brett Pesce

    Petr Mrazek

    Alex Nedelijkovic

    First Period:

    1. Capitals Penalty – Sergei Shumakov 2 minutes for High Sticking – 1:54
    2. Hurricanes PPG – Valentin Zykov (2) from Andrei Svechnikov (2) and Jaccob Slavin (2)

    3. Hurricanes Penalty – Sebastian Aho 2 minutes for High Sticking – 7:18

    4. Hurricanes Goal – Jordan Staal (1) from Jaccob Slavin (3) and Brock McGinn (1) – 11:33

    5. Capitals Goal – Nicklas Backstrom (1) from Aaron Ness (1) and Dmitry Orlov (1) – 12:21

    6. Hurricanes Penalty – Hayden Fleury 2 minutes for Tripping – 12:53

    7. Hurricanes SHG – Jordan Martinook (1) from Warren Foegele (2) – 13:36

    Score – WAS 1         CAR 3

    Shots –    7                   12

    FO’s –    8/20             12/20

    Hits –      4                   13

    PP –        0/2                1/1

Analysis: This was a very sloppy first period for the Capitals as they were coughing up turnovers left and right in their own zone. Also the Caps were having great difficulty generating good breakouts out of their own zone. The Caps did respond well when they went down 2-0, but giving up a shorthanded goal that long after is a bad blow for this team.

Need to Do: The Capitals need to tighten up in their own zone, and generate cleaner breakouts with better crisp passes. Also the Capitals need to do a better job in the offensive zone, and generate some better opportunities around Petr Mrazek.

    Second Period:

    8. Capitals Penalty – Nicklas Backstrom 2 minutes for Holding – 1:20

    9. Hurricanes Penalty – Calvin de Haan 2 minutes for Interference – 5:48

    10. Hurricanes Penalty – Warren Foegele 2 minutes for Slashing – 18:13

    Score – WAS 1         CAR 3

    Shots –    10                18

    FO’s –    13/30           17/30

    Hits –      13                 23

    PP –        0/4                1/2

Analysis: This was a better period for the Capitals. They played with some more hustle, but they only generated 3 shots this period.

Need to Do: The Capitals need to clean up their passes a bit more and they need to generate more scoring chances. The powerplay looked ok, but it didn’t generate much and they need to do better.

    Third Period:

    11. Capitals Penalty – Aaron Ness 2 minutes for Holding – 1:50

    12. Capitals Penalty – Shane Gersich 2 minutes for High Sticking – 16:56

    13. Hurricanes PPG – Jaccob Slavin (2) from Valentin Zykov (1) and Jordan Staal (1) – 17:16

    14. Hurricanes ENG – Martin Necas (2) from Warren Foegele (3) from Dougie Hamilton Hamilton (1)

    15. Captials Penalty – Madison Bowey 2 minutes for Hooking – 19:42

    Score – WAS 1         CAR 5

    Shots –    18                 26

    FO’s –    23/47           24/47

    Hits –      20                 35

    PP –        0/4                2/5

Analysis: Tough loss for the Capitals, but this is what happens when you take too many penalties, don’t capitalize on your powerplay opportunities, and most importantly, can’t generate clean breakouts to get out of your own zone. Caps are still winless in the preseason, which doesn’t mean anything right now especially since the entire main roster has yet to play together in this preseason. There are 3 more preseason games left, expect to see the Caps round back to form before Oct. 3rd.
