    On a chilly Monday night, there were six games across the NHL that included a fracas as well as action packed contests, plus news and notes

    NHL News and Notes from Monday, November 27th, 2023

    News

    • The NHL announced that they have named Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid as the First Star of the Week,
      • Nikita Kucherov (TB) and Juuse Saros (NAS) would round out the rest of the Three Stars.
    • NHL Stars of the Week – McDavid Surges for Top Honors

    • The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that they have suspended Minnesota Wild forward Ryan Hartman.
      • Hartman was suspended for two games for tripping Detroit Red Wings forward Alex DeBricat on Sunday.
      • Hartman will forfeit $41,463.42 based on his average annual salary per the CBA, and is also considered a repeat offender per the CBA as well.

    • The Minnesota Wild announced that they have relieved head coach Dean Evason and assistant coach Bob Woods of their duties.
      • The Wild would then name John Hynes as their new head coach.

    • The NHL announced that the 2024 All Star Weekend will be three days and will begin with All Star Thursday on February 1st, 2024.
      • At 6p ET on ESPN and SportsNet will be the Return of the All Star Player Draft.
      • Then at 7p ET on ESPN+ and SportsNet will be the NHL Alumni Man of the Year as the 1967 Toronto Maple Leafs will be honored.
      • Then to close out the evening at 9p will be the PWHL 3 on 3 Showcase.

    • In the PWHL Minnesota would sign defender Natalie Buchbinder to a two year deal.

    Boston Bruins v. Columbus Blue Jackets – 7p ET

    • In Columbus, the Blue Jackets hosted the Bruins and in the first Columbus took the 1-0 lead with a goal from Dmitri Voronokov, his fourth of the year. In the second, Columbus got a pair from Ivan Provorov, scoring his second of the year, and Yegor Chinakhov, also scoring his second, to take the 3-0 lead. In the third, a power play goal from Kirill Marchenko put the Blue Jackets up 4-0 but then Boston finally got on the board with Matthew Poitras fifth goal of the season. Columbus then re-took the four goal lead with an empty netter from Justin Danforth but Boston responded when John Beecher netted his fourth of the year. However, Columbus held on as the Blue Jackets defeated the Bruins 5-2.

    Buffalo Sabres v. New York Rangers – 7p ET

    • In New York City, the Rangers hosted the Sabres and in the first, Buffalo took the 1-0 lead when JJ Peterka scored his ninth of the year. In the second, Alex Tuch’s seventh goal of the year put the Sabres up 2-0. In the third, a power play goal from Mika Zibanejad got the Rangers on the board but then Alex Tuch’s second of the night gave Buffalo the two goal lead back. Then, an empty netter from Casey Mittlestadt put Buffalo up three and then Kyle Okposo sealed the game with his third of the year as the Sabres dominated the Rangers 5-1.

    Florida Panthers v. Ottawa Senators – 7p ET

    • In the Canadian capital, the Senators hosted the Panthers and in the first, Sam Reinhart scored a power play goal to give Florida the 1-0 lead. In the second, Sam Reinhart scored his second goal of the night, also on the power play to put the Cats up 2-0 and then Sam Bennett scored a power play goal of his own to give Florida the 3-0 lead. In the third, a major fracas broke out with penalties being doled out between both squads. Calmer heads prevailed for the time being when Carter Verhaeghe scored his ninth of the year to put the Panthers up 4-0. Then, at 12:38, there was even more chaos as another fracas broke out following matching roughing penalties, as well as an Ottawa goaltender interference penalty, and misconduct penalties totaling 106 minutes alone. Then, just shy of two minutes after the fracas, another set of matching misconduct penalties were doled out and then finally cooler heads prevailed with the game clincher from Eetu Luostarinen as the Panthers dominated the Senators for the 5-0 shutout win.

    NHL Stars of the Week – McDavid Surges for Top Honors

    Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of November 20th through 26th.

    First Star – Connor McDavid (C – EDM)

    • Connor McDavid would have a resurgence as he would record three goals and nine assists for 12 points in four games for the Edmonton Oilers. To start off his week McDavid would record two goals in a 5-3 loss to Florida on Nov. 20th, and then on Nov. 22nd he would collect an assist in a 6-3 loss to Carolina. Then on Nov. 24th he would record four assists in 5-0 victory over Washington, and then on Nov. 26th McDavid would close out the week with a goal and four assists in an 8-2 victory over Anaheim.

    Second Star – Nikita Kucherov (RW – TB)

    • Nikita Kucherov would record two goals and six assists for eight points in three games played for the Tampa Bay Lightning. To start off his week Kucherov would record an assist in a 5-4 overtime victory over Boston on Nov. 20th. Then on Nov. 22nd he would record another assist in a 3-2 overtime loss to Winnipeg, and then to close out the week Kucherov would record two goals and four assists in an 8-2 victory over Carolina on Nov. 24th.

    Third Star – Juuse Saros (G – NAS)

    • In three games played for the Nashville Predators, Juuse Saros would go a perfect 3-0-0 with a 2.35 goals against average, and a .921 save percentage. Saros would open the week with 26 saves in a 4-3 comeback victory over Colorado on Nov. 20th. Then on Nov. 22nd he would record 24 saves in a 4-2 win over Calgary, and then to close out the week Saros would record 32 saves in a 3-2 victory over Winnipeg.

    • In a matinee matchup in the Motor City, the Red Wings hosted the Wild and in the first period David Perron scored a power play goal to give Detroit the 1-0 lead but then Minnesota tied the game with a power play goal from Joel Eriksson Ek. In the second, Dylan Larkin scored his eighth of the year to put Detroit back in the lead. In the third, David Perron scores a power play goal of his own as Detroit took the two goal lead and then an empty netter from Shayne Gostisbehere would lift the Red Wings to the 4-1 win over the Wild.

    St. Louis Blues v. Chicago Blackhawks – 2p ET

    • In Chicago the Blackhawks welcomed the Blues back to the Windy City and in the first St. Louis got on the board first with Jake Neighbours sixth of the year and then the Blues took the 2-0 lead when Kevin Hayes scored his fourth of the year. Then, Chicago got on the board when Ryan Donato scored his fourth of the year but then the Blues re-took the two goal lead with Pavel Buchnevich’s eighth of the year on a St. Louis power play. After a scoreless second, St. Louis made it a three goal lead when Jake Neighbours scored his second of the night but then Boris Katchouk scored his first of the year. Despite the late goal by Chicago, the Blues held on as the would double up the Blackhawks with the 4-2 win.

    Columbus Blue Jackets v. Carolina Hurricanes – 5p ET

    • In Raleigh, the Hurricanes welcomed the Blue Jackets and after a scoreless first and second period Columbus got a pair when Kirill Marchenko scored his sixth and then Johnny Gaudreau got his third. Then, Carolina got on the board when Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored his seventh and then the Canes tied it up when Brady Skjei scored his third of the year. Andrei Svechnikov then scored the game winner, his first goal of the season, as the Hurricanes downed the Blue Jackets 3-2.

    Winnipeg Jets v. Nashville Predators – 8p ET

    • In Music City, the Predators welcomed the Jets back to Nashville and in the first, Yakov Trenin scored his fourth of the year to give the Predators the 1-0 lead. In the second, Roman Josi scored his fourth of the year to put Nashville up 2-0 and then Gustav Nyqvist’s third of the year on a power play put the Preds up 3-0. In the third, Winnipeg got on the board when Josh Morrissey scored his fourth of the year and then Cole Perfetti scored his seventh of the year on a power play. Despite the efforts from Winnipeg, the Predators escaped with the 3-2 win over the Jets.

    • The New York Islanders claimed defenseman Mike Reilly off of waivers from the Florida Panthers.

    • The Chicago Blackhawks confirmed that forward Corey Perry will be away from the team for the “foreseeable future”.
      • Perry’s agent Pat Morris announced that Perry has stepped away to attend to personal matters.
      • However, the team is claiming it was an “organizational decision” for his absence.

    • The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that they have fined New York Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba.
      • Trouba would be fined $5,000 for high sticking Boston Bruins forward Trent Frederic on Saturday afternoon.
      • The fine is the maximum allowed per the CBA.

    Boston Bruins v. New York Rangers – 1p ET

    • At Madison Square Garden the New York Rangers would host the Boston Bruins for an Original Six matchup to kick start Saturday’s action, and in the first period Nick Bonino and Chris Kreider would open the scoring for the Rangers, but goals from Charlie Coyle and Morgan Geekie would tie the game at two for the B’s. However, before the end of the first Kreider would net his second of the game to give the Rangers the 3-2 lead. In the second period David Pastrnak would strike 26 seconds in to tie the game at three for the B’s, but goals from Jimmy Vesey and K’Andre Miller would give the Rangers the 5-3 lead.     • In Los Angeles the Kings would play host to the Montreal Canadiens, and in the first period Carl Grundstrom would score to give the Kings the 1-0 lead. Then in the third period Trevor Lewis would score and Moore would net his second of the game to give the Kings the 4-0 shutout victory over the Canadiens.

    • In Pittsburgh for Hockey Night in Canada (but played in the US) the Penguins would play host to the Toronto Maple Leafs, and in the first period Tyler Bertuzzi and Matthew Knies would score for the Leafs, but Jake Guentzel would score to get the Pens on the board and down by one. In the second period Noel Acciari and Erik Karlsson would score to give the Pens the 3-2 lead. Then in the third period it would be scoreless as the Penguins would hold on to defeat the Maple Leafs 3-2.

    Philadelphia Flyers v. New York Islanders – 730p ET

    • On Long Island the Philadelphia Flyers would come to town to faceoff with the New York Islanders, and after a scoreless 65 minutes of hockey it would be Tyson Foerster in the shootout to give the Flyers the 1-0 victory over the Islanders. Samuel Ersson would stop all 25 shots faced in regulation and overtime and all four shots faced in the shootout for the shutout victory. Ilya Sorokin would stop all 40 shots faced in regulation and overtime for the Islanders.

    • In Boston the NHL would kick off it’s Black Friday action with an Original Six matchup as the Bruins would play host to the Detroit Red Wings, and in the first period JT Compher and Alex DeBrincat would score to give the Wings the 2-0 lead. In the second period Jake DeBrusk would score to get the B’s on the board and back within one, but Robby Fabbri would score to give the Wings their two goal lead back. Then in the third period Danton Heinen would score for the B’s, but it would not be enough as Dylan Larkin and David Perron would score to give the Red Wings the 5-2 victory over the Bruins.

    • In Chicago we would be treated to another Original Six matchup as the Blackhawks would play host to the Toronto Maple Leafs, and in the first period Nick Robertson would score to get the Leafs on the board first, but Jason Dickinson would score to tie the game at one for the Blackhawks. In the second period Calle Jarnkrok and Ryan Reaves would score for the Leafs to take the 3-1 lead, but Dickinson would net his second of the game to get the Blackhawks back within one. Then in the third period Dickinson would complete the hat trick after 15 seconds into the period to send the game to overtime tied at three. In the extra frame Kevin Korchinski would score to give the Blackhawks the 4-3 overtime victory over the Maple Leafs.

    Columbus Blue Jackets v. New Jersey Devils – 3p ET

    • In New Jersey the Devils would take on the Columbus Blue Jackets, and all of the scoring would take place in the first period as Boone Jenner would open up the scoring for the Jackets. Then Alexander Holtz would strike to tie the game for the Devils, but Eric Robinson would score late in the period to give the Blue Jackets the eventual 2-1 victory over the Devils.

    Nashville Predators v. St. Louis Blues – 3p ET

    • In St. Louis it would be a high scoring affair when the Blues hosted the Nashville Predators. In the first period Filip Forsbarg, Yakov Trenin, and Luke Evangelista would score to give the Preds the 3-0 lead, but Pavel Buchnevich would score to get the Blues on the board and back within two. In the second period Robert Thomas would score for the Blues, but Evangelista and Forsberg would both net their second goals of the game and Spencer Stastney and Ryan O’Reilly would score to give the Blues the commanding 7-2 lead. Then in the third period Jake Neighbours would score for the Blues, but Kiefer Sherwood would score to give the Predators the 8-3 victory over the Blues.

    Edmonton Oilers v. Washington Capitals – 3p ET

    • In Washington the Capitals would take on the Edmonton Oilers in a Black Friday afternoon matchup, and in the first period Evander Kane would strike, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins would bat the puck out of midair to give the Oilers the 2-0 lead. Then in the second period Evan Bouchard would blast a bomb from the point and Leon Draisaitl would net a pair of goals to give the Oilers three straight powerplay goals to down the Capitals 5-0.

    Los Angeles Kings v. Anaheim Ducks – 330p ET

    • It would be a Battle of LA as the Los Angeles Kings would make the 15 minute ride over to Anaheim to take on the Ducks, and in the first period Kevin Fiala and Arthur Kaliyev would score to give the Kings the 2-0 lead. In the second period Quinton Byfield would score and Fiala would net his second of the game to give the Kings the four goal lead, but Radko Gudas would score to get the Ducks on the board. Then in the third period Alex Killorn would score his first as a Duck, but Anze Kopitar would score to give the Kings the 5-2 victory over the Ducks.

    • In San Jose the Sharks would take on the Montreal Canadiens, and after a scoreless first period Mike Hoffman and William Eklund would strike first for the Sharks, but Johnathan Kovacevic would score for the Habs to get them back within one. In the third period Cole Caufield would score to tie the game at two for the Habs to send the game to overtime. Then after a scoreless extra five minutes of hockey it would be Jesse Ylonen with the shootout winner to give the Canadiens the 3-2 victory over the Sharks.

    • In Buffalo the Sabres would play host to the Pittsburgh Penguins, and in the first period Sidney Crosby would score to give the Pens the 1-0 lead. In the second period Lars Eller would score to grow the Pens lead to two. Then in the third period Jeff Skinner, Kyle Okposo, and Alex Tuch would score to give the Sabres the 3-2 comeback victory over the Penguins.

    • In Ottawa the New York Islanders would come to town to face the Senators, and in the first period Drake Batherson would strike first for the Sens, but Kyle Palmieri would score to tie the game at one for the Isles. In the second period Oliver Wahlstrom, Mathew Barzal, and Anders Lee would score to give the Isles the 4-1 lead, but goals from Tim Stuetzle and Batherson would get the Sens back within one.     • In Carolina the Hurricanes would reignite their rivalry with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and in the first period Stefan Noesen would score to give the Canes the 1-0 lead. In the second period Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov, and Brayden Point would score to give the Bolts the 3-1 lead, but Michael Bunting would score to get the Canes back within one. Then in the third period Brandon Hagel and Luke Glendening would score, plus Kucherov would net his second of the game and Point would net two more to complete the hat trick to give the Lightning the 8-2 victory over the Hurricanes.

    Edmonton Oilers v. Carolina Hurricanes – 7p ET

    • In Carolina the Hurricanes would play host to the struggling Edmonton Oilers, and in the first period Jesper Fast, Jack Drury, Teuvo Teravainen, and Seth Jarvis would score to give the Canes a commanding 4-0 lead, but Zach Hyman would score to get the Oilers on the board. In the second period Martin Necas would score to regain the four goal lead for the Canes, but Mattias Ekholm would score for the Oilers. Then in the third period Hyman would net his second of the game for his 10th of the season to get the Oilers back within two, but Brent Burns would get the empty netter to give the Hurricanes the 6-3 victory over the Oilers.

    Chicago Blackhawks v. Columbus Blue Jackets – 7p ET

    • In Columbus the Blue Jackets would host the Chicago Blackhawks, and in the first period Boone Jenner would net a pair of goals and Erik Gudbranson would score for the Jackets to take the 3-0 lead, but Connor Bedard would net his 10th of the season to get the Blackhawks on the board. In the second period Cole Sillinger, Dmitri Voronkov, Kirill Marchenko, and Patrik Laine would score to give the Jackets the commanding 7-1 lead. Then in the third period Jason Dickinson and Reese Johnson would score for the Blackhawks, but it would not be enough as they would fall to the Blue Jackets 7-3.

    New Jersey Devils v. Detroit Red Wings – 7p ET

    • In Detroit the Red Wings would take on the New Jersey Devils, and in the first period Lucas Raymond, Dylan Larkin, and Robby Fabbri would score to give the Wings the 3-0 lead. Then in the third period Moritz Seider would score to give the Red Wings the 4-0 victory over the Devils.

    Boston Bruins v. Florida Panthers – 7p ET

    • In Florida the Panthers would go to battle with the Boston Bruins, and in the first period Charlie Coyle would score to give the B’s the 1-0 lead. Then in the second period Anton Lundell would score to tie the game at one for the Panthers, but goals from John Beecher and Jake DeBrusk would give the Bruins the 3-1 victory over the Panthers.

    New York Rangers v. Pittsburgh Penguins – 7p ET

    • In Pittsburgh the New York Rangers would come to town to take on the Penguins, and in the first period we would see the lone goal of the game as Alexis Lafreniere would score to give the Rangers the 1-0 victory over the Penguins. Jonathan Quick would stop all 32 shots faced to earn his first shutout as a Ranger.

    Winnipeg Jets v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 7p ET

    • In Tampa Bay the Lightning would look to ground the Winnipeg Jets, and in the first period Josh Morrissey and Mark Scheifele would score to give the Jets the 2-0 lead, but Steven Stamkos would score to get the Bolts back within one. In the second period Brayden Point would score to tie the game at two for the Bolts. Then after a scoreless third period Adam Lowry would net the game winner as the Jets would go on to defeat the Lightning 3-2 in overtime.

    Buffalo Sabres v. Washington Capitals – 7p ET

    • In Washington the Capitals would play host to the Buffalo Sabres, and in the first period JJ Peterka would score and Zach Benson would net his first career NHL goal to give the Sabres the 2-0 lead, but Alexander Alexeyev would net his first career NHL goal to get the Caps back within one. In the second period TJ Oshie would score to tie the game at two for the Caps, but Dylan Cozens would score to retake the lead for the Sabres. Then in the third period Tom Wilson would score to tie the game at three to force overtime. In the extra frame Dylan Strome would strike to give the Capitals the 4-3 overtime victory over the Sabres.

    Philadelphia Flyers v. New York Islanders – 730p ET

    • On Long Island the New York Islanders would take on division rival Philadelphia Flyers, and in the first period Anders Lee would score to give the Isles the 1-0 lead. In the second period Brock Nelson would score to give the Isles the two goal lead, but Cam York would score to get the Flyers on the board and back within one. Then in the third period Joel Farabee would score for the Flyers, but Nelson’s second of the game would give the Islanders the 3-2 victory over the Flyers.

    • The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that they have fined Vancouver Canucks forward Nils Hoglander.
      • Hoglander would get fined $2,864.58 for slew-footing San Jose Sharks forward Kevin Labanc on Monday night.
      • The fine is the maximum allowed per the CBA.

    PWHL News

    • In the PWHL Montreal would sign defender Dominika Laskova to a two year deal.
    • Montreal would also sign defender Mariah Keopple to a one year deal.

    • The Carolina Hurricanes announced that they have released goaltender Jaroslav Halak from his Free Agent Tryout.

    • In PWHL news New York would sign defender Jaime Bourbonnais to a three year deal.

    • Montréal would announce that they have signed goaltender Elaine Chuli to a one year deal.

    • Montreal would also sign defender Kati Tabin to a two year deal.

    Edmonton Oilers v. Florida Panthers – 7p ET

    • In South Florida, the Oilers look to get back in the win column with their lone visit against the Panthers. In the first, Edmonton got a pair when Connor McDavid scored his fifth and then Evander Kane scored his eighth of the year. Then, Florida responded with two goals of their own to tie the game when Carter Verhaeghe scored a power play goal, his eighth goal of the year, and then Niko Mikkola scored his second of the year. In the second, Connor McDavid got his second of the night off a penalty shot to give Edmonton the 3-2 lead but then Niko Mikkola scored his second of the night to tie the game for the Panthers. Then, Kevin Stenlund scored his fifth of the year to put Florida up 4-3. In the third, Sam Bennett scored an empty net goal, his first goal on the season as the Panthers earned the 5-3 win over the Oilers.

    Boston Bruins v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 7p ET

    • In Tampa, the Lightning welcomed the Bruins back to town and in the first Tampa Bay took the 1-0 lead with Tanner Jeannot’s fourth of the year but then Boston responded with Pavel Zacha’s seventh of the year. In the second, Tampa Bay re-took the lead when Nicholas Paul scored a power play goal, his eighth of the year. In the third, Boston tied the game with David Pastrnak’s 12th of the year and then the B’s took the lead with John Beecher’s second of the year. However, Tampa tied the contest when Austin Watson notched his first tally of the year, but then Boston re-took the one goal advantage with Charlie Coyle’s sixth of the year. Then, the Bolts would tie the game with Steven Stamkos’ seventh of the year with five seconds left in the contest. In overtime, Brandon Hagel scored his ninth of the year as the Lightning got the 5-4 win over the Bruins.

    New York Rangers v. Dallas Stars – 8p ET

    • In Dallas, the Rangers made their lone visit to the Lone Star State to take on the Stars and in the first, New York took the 1-0 lead with Vincent Trocheck’s power play goal, his fifth of the year. In the second, Kaapo Kakko scored his second of the year to put the Rangers up 2-0 but then Dallas got on the board when Jamie Benn scored his fourth of the year. In the third, Joe Pavelski scored his eighth of the year to tie the contest for the Stars and then Mason Marchment scored a power play goal to put Dallas up 3-2. Then, three additional goals from Tyler Seguin, Sam Steel, and Roope Hintz put the Stars up four. Barclay Goodrow then scored his first of the year for the Blueshirts but the Stars held on as they doubled up the Rangers 6-3.

    Colorado Avalanche v. Nashville Predators – 8p ET

    • In Music City, the Predators welcomed the Avalanche back to Nashville and in the first Colorado took the 1-0 lead when Andrew Cogliano scored a shorthanded goal, his third goal of the year, but then Nashville responded when Filip Forsberg scored his eighth of the year. In the second, Nashville took the 2-1 lead with Jeremy Lauzon’s first of the year but the Avs tied the game Devon Toews notched his third of the year. Valeri Nichushkin’s power play goal, his seventh goal of the year, gave Colorado the one goal advantage. In the third, Filip Forsberg scored his second of the night to tie the game for Nashville and then Yakov Trenin scored his second of the year as the Predators downed the Avalanche 4-3.
