Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of January 15th through 21st.
First Star – Kirill Kaprizov (LW – MIN)
Kirill Kaprizov would record five goals and three assists for eight points in four games played for the Minnesota Wild, and to open up his week Kaprizov would record an assist in a 5-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Jan. 15th. On Jan. 18th in a 7-3 loss to Tampa Bay he would record an assist, and on Jan. 19th Kaprizov would tally two goals and an assist in a 6-4 vin over Florida. Then to close out the week Kaprizov would record a hat trick in a 5-2 victory over Carolina on Jan. 21st.

Second Star – David Pastrnak (RW – BOS)
David Pastrnak would also record five goals along with two assists for seven points in three games for the Boston Bruins. To start off the week Pastrnak would record a goal and an assist in a 3-0 victory over New Jersey on Jan. 15th, and then on Jan. 18th he would record a hat trick in a 5-2 victory over Colorado. Then on Jan. 20th to close out the week Pastrnak would record a goal and an assist in a 9-4 victory over Montreal.

Third Star – Logan Thompson (G – VGK)
Logan Thompson would backstop the Vegas Golden Knights with a perfect 3-0-0 record with a 1.34 goals against average, and a .956 save percentage in three games played. To open up his week Thompson would stop 34 of 35 shots faced in a 4-1 victory over Nashville on Jan. 15th, and then he would make 29 saves in a 5-1 victory over the New York Rangers on Jan. 18th. Then to close out the week Thompson would make 23 saves in a 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh on Jan. 20th.

Ottawa Senators v. Philadelphia Flyers – 1p ET
In Philadelphia, the Flyers faced off against the Senators in a matinee match-up. In the first, the Flyers took the 1-0 with a power play goal from Egor Zamula and then he ended up scoring again to put Philadelphia up 2-0. In the second, Zack MacEwen scored his second of the year to put Ottawa one the board but then the Flyers re-took the two goal lead when Joel Farabee scored a power play goal, his 17th of the year. Then, Ottawa got within a goal when Tim Stützle scored his ninth of the year. In the third, Claude Giroux scored his 14th of the year to tie the contest and then Vladimir Tarasenko put Ottawa in the lead with his 12th of the year. Then, Tim Stützle scored an empty net goal, his second of the night, as the Senators came from behind to defeat the Flyers 5-3.
In Raleigh, the Hurricanes welcomed the Wild and in the first, Carolina took the 1-0 lead when Martin Necas scored his 11th of the year but then Minnesota evened the score when Kirill Kaprizov scored his 16th of the year. In the second, Kirill Kaprizov scored his second of the year to the Wild in the lead. In the third, Carolina evened the score with Michael Bunting’s 10th of the year but then Minnesota got back in the lead when Joel Eriksson Ek scored his 19th of the year. Then, Kirill Kaprizov got the hat trick with an empty netter to put Minnesota up by two and then Jake Middleton closed the game with an empty net goal of his own as the Wild struck down the Hurricanes 5-2.
In the Motor City, the Red Wings welcomed the Lightning and in the first Tampa Bay took the 1-0 lead with Victor Hedman’s ninth of the year but then Detroit tied the game when Lucas Raymond scored his 13th of the year. In the second, Daniel Sprong put Detroit in the lead with his 12th of the year. After the scoreless third, the Red Wings squeaked by the Lightning for the 2-1 victory.
In Long Island, the Islanders welcomed the Stars back to New York and in the first Alexander Romanov scored his fifth of the year to put New York in the lead. In the second, Dallas tied the game when Jason Robertson scored his 16th of the year and then the Stars took the lead with Nils Lundkvist scored his second of the year. In the third, the Isles tied the game when Hudson Fasching scored his third of the year. In overtime, Bo Horvat scored the game winner, his 19th goal of the year, to lift the Islanders past the Stars 3-2.
More history on the road would be made as Toronto would earn the first shootout victory in PWHL history as both road teams were victorious.

New York v. Boston – 1230p ET
Boston would play host to New York for an early afternoon matinee as PWHL action would return after a couple days off, and in the first period Jade Downie-Landry would net her first of the season to give New York the 1-0 lead. In the second period Jessie Eldridge would score and Downie-Landry would net her second of the game to grow New York’s lead to three. Then in the third period Loren Gabel would score for Boston, but Downie-Landry would score to complete the hat trick and give New York the 3-1 victory over Boston.
Montreal would play host to Toronto for their first meeting of the season, and in the first period Sarah Bujold would score for Montreal to take the 1-0 lead. In the second period Jocelyne Larocque would score for Toronto to tie the game at one, but Marie-Philip Poulin would score to give Montreal the 2-1 lead. Then in the third period Maggie Connors and Natalie Spooner would score to give Toronto the 3-2 lead, but Poulin’s second of the game would tie the game at three for Montreal to force overtime. After a scoreless five minutes of extra hockey Lauriane Rougeau would score the shootout winner to give Toronto the 4-3 victory over Montreal. The game would also mark the first shootout victory in PWHL history.
It was definitely a good hockey day for the NHL as we would be treated to 12 action packed games throughout the League.

Tampa Bay Lightning v. Buffalo Sabres – 1230p ET
In Buffalo for an early afternoon matinee the Sabres would play host to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and in the first period Nick Paul and Tyler Motte would score to give the Bolts the 2-0 lead. In the second period Dylan Cozens would score to get the Sabres on the board and back within one. Then in the third period Calvin de Haan would score to give the Lightning the 3-1 victory over the Sabres.
In Philadelphia the Flyers would host the Colorado Avalanche for an afternoon matinee matchup, and in the first period Logan O’Connor would open the scoring for the Avs, and Mikko Rantanen would score to give the Avs the 2-0 lead. In the second period Nathan MacKinnon would score to grow the Avs lead to three, but Joel Farabee would score to get the Flyers on the board. Travis Konecny would also score for the Flyers in the second period, but both O’Connor and MacKinnon would net their second goals of the game to give the Avs the 5-2 lead. Then in the third period Tyson Forester and Cam Atkinson would score for the Flyers, but Rantanen would net his second of the game and O’Connor would score to complete the hat trick to give the Avalanche the 7-4 victory over the Flyers.
In Arizona the Coyotes would take on the Nashville Predators, and in the first period Clayton Keller would score to give the Yotes the 1-0 lead. In the second period Keller would net his second of the game while Roman Josi would score for the Preds and Michael Carcone would strike for the Yotes to have the 3-1 lead. Then in the third period Tommy Novak would score for the Preds, but it would not be enough as the Coyotes would hold on to defeat the Predators 3-2.
In Ottawa for the first game of a Hockey Day in Canada tripleheader the Senators would take on the Winnipeg Jets, and after a scoreless first period Mason Appleton would score to give the Jets the 1-0 lead. In the third period Parker Kelly would score for the Sens to tie the game at one. Then in the extra frame Nikolaj Ehlers would score to give the Jets the 2-1 overtime victory over the Senators.
In Boston for an Original Six matchup the Bruins would play host to the Montreal Canadiens, and in the first period Cole Caufield and Joel Armia would score for the Habs, but goals from Brandon Carlo, Jake DeBrusk, and Danton Heinen would give the B’s the 3-2 lead. In the second period Mike Matheson and Brendan Gallagher would strike for the Habs, but goals from Heinen and Charlie Coyle would keep the B’s in the lead. Then in the third period David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand and Pavel Zacha would score, and Heinen would score to complete the hat trick to give the Bruins the 9-4 victory over the Canadiens.
In New Jersey the Devils would honor Sergei Brylin as they would host the Dallas Stars, and in the first period Joe Pavelski would score to give the Stars the 1-0 lead. In the second period Roope Hintz would net a pair of goals and Matt Duchene would score for the Stars to take the four goal lead. Then in the third period Jesper Bratt and Tyler Toffoli would score for the Devils, but goals from Craig Smith and Wyatt Johnston would give the Stars the 6-2 victory over the Devils.
In Vancouver for Hockey Night in Canada the Canucks would battle the Toronto Maple Leafs, and in the first period Nils Hoglander would net a pair of goals and Conor Garland would score for the Canucks to take the 3-0 lead. In the second period William Nylander would net a pair of goals and Jake McCabe would score for the Leafs to tie the game at three, but Garland would net his second of the game to give the Canucks the 4-3 lead. Then in the third period Mitch Marner would score to tie the game at four for the Leafs, but goals from JT Miller and Elias Pettersson would give the Canucks the 6-4 victory over the Maple Leafs.
In St. Louis the Blues would induct Mike Liut, Keith Tkachuk, and Pavol Demitra into their Hall of Fame as the Washington Capitals come to town, and in the first period Colton Parayko would score to give the Blues the 1-0 lead. In the second period Brayden Schenn would strike to give the Blues the two goal lead. Then in the third period Jake Neighbours would score to give the Blues the 3-0 victory over the Capitals.
The Vancouver Canucks announced that they have extended General Manager Jim Rutherford’s contract.

The Washington Capitals announced that they have signed forward Aliaksei Protas to a contract extension.
Protas would sign a five year contract that would carry an AAV of $3.375 million per season.

In Carolina the Hurricanes would play host to the Detroit Red Wings, and in the first period Klim Kostin would open the scoring for the Wings, but Jordan Martinook would strike for the Canes to tie the game at one. In the second period both teams would trade goals again as Martin Necas would strike for the Canes while JT Compher would score for the Wings for the 2-2 tie. Then in the third period Andrei Svechnikov and Sebastian Aho would score to give the Hurricanes the 4-2 victory over the Red Wings.

In Columbus the Blue Jackets would go to battle with the New Jersey Devils, and in the first period Cole Sillinger would score to give the Jackets the 1-0 lead. In Buffalo, the Sabres welcomed the Blackhawks back to Western New York and after a scoreless first Buffalo took the 1-0 lead when Zemgus Girgensons scored his fourth goal of the year. In the third, JJ Peterka netted his 14th to put Buffalo up 2-0 and then Rasmus Dahlin scored a power play goal, his 13th of the year as the Sabres went to shutout the Blackhawks 3-0.
In Boston, the Bruins welcomed the Avalanche back to Beantown and in the first Boston took 1-0 lead when David Pastrnak scored his 27th and then Jakub Lauko scored his first of the year to put the Bruins up 2-0. Then, Miles Wood scored his eighth of the year to put Colorado on the board but then Jake DeBrusk scored his 10th of the year to put Boston back up two. In the second, Nathan MacKinnon scored his 24th to bring the Avs within a goal once again. In the third, David Pastrnak scored a pair, a power play goal and an empty netter, to complete the hat trick and give the Bruins the 5-2 win over the Avalanche.

In the second, Rourke Chartier scored his second of the year to put the Sens up 3-1 and then Vladimir Tarasenko scored his 11th to put Ottawa up three. In the third, Mathieu Joseph scored his seventh to put the Sens up 5-1 and then Parker Kelly scored his fifth on an empty net to give Ottawa the 6-1 lead. Then, Michael Pezzetta scored his second of the year for Montreal but the Senators ended up getting the 6-2 victory over the Canadiens.

Then, Owen Tippett scored his second of the night as the Flyers breezed by the Stars for the 5-1 win.
In Tamp, the Lighting hosted the Wild and in the first Joel Eriksson Ek’s 18th of the year gave Minnesota the 1-0 lead but then Victor Hedman responded with his eighth of the year to even the score. In the second, Anthony Cirelli scored on the power play to give the Bolts the 2-1 lead and then Walterri Merela scored his first NHL goal to give Tampa Bay the two goal lead. Marco Rossi then scored his 13th of the year to bring the Wild within a goal but then Brayden Point notched his 21st to give the Lightning the two goal lead back. Then, Jake Middleton scored his sixth of the year to bring Minnesota within a goal once more. In the third, Steven Stamkos and Michael Eyssimont each scored a power play goal to put Tampa Bay up three and then Anthony Cirelli scored his second of the night to give the Lightning the 7-3 victory over the Wild.
In the Nation’s Capital, Washington hosted St. Louis in the front half of a home and home series and in the first T.J. Oshie scored a power play goal, his fifth of the year to put Washington up 1-0. Nathan Walker then responded when he scored his second of the year to even the contest. In the second, Washington got a pair when Nicolas Aube-Kubel scored his fifth of the year and then T.J. Oshie scored his second of the night to put the Caps up two. In the third, Dylan Strome scored his 16th of the year to put Washington up three but then Nathan Walker scored his second of the night to bring the Blues within two. Then, T.J. Oshie got the hat trick as the Capitals defeated the Blues 5-2.
