Game Recap – 11/16/2019 – Washington Capitals v. Boston Bruins

    Washington Capitals (14-3-4 32pts) v. Boston Bruins (12-3-4 28pts)

    Game Recap:

Shipping up to Boston after a disappointing showing at home the night before against the Montreal Canadiens, the Washington Capitals look to rebound against the Bruins. In the first period the Capitals would get a powerplay opportunity near the half way point of the period, but their struggles from the night before continued as they were unable to handle the puck well, and squandered their powerplay. Then shortly after the powerplay ended for the Capitals, the Bruins would strike as Danton Heinen would feed a beautiful pass across the slot to Charlie Coyle to bank in his fourth goal of the season to give the Bruins the one goal lead. However, the Capitals would respond as Travis Boyd, who was recalled from Hershey earlier in the day, would cut through the slot area and redirect a John Carlson point blast to get his first of the season and tie the game at one.

In the second period the Bruins would fail to capitalize on the remaining time left on their powerplay from the first period, but once it was over the Bruins would still respond anyways as David Pastrnak would score off a bad angle to retake the one goal lead over the Capitals. The Capitals would get a powerplay opportunity a little later, but would not do anything substantial with it. The Bruins would earn another powerplay as well, and just like the Capitals were unable to make anything of the opportunity.

In the third period there wouldn’t be a lot outside of Tom Wilson and Zdeno Chara both getting minors for roughing until the final minute of regulation as the Capitals would pull Braden Holtby and a slick pass from behind the net to TJ Oshie who would bury it to tie the game at two and send the game to overtime. After a scoreless extra five minutes the game would head to the shootout. After being tied at one goal each after the first three rounds, Jakub Vrana would undress Jaroslav Halak to score the winning goal in the shootout and give the Capitals the 3-2 victory.

Capitals News – Fehervary Assigned to Hershey *UPDATED*

Today the Washington Capitals have assigned Martin Fehervary to the Hershey Bears of the AHL.

In three games this season, the 20 year old rookie defenseman was averaging 14:29 minutes per game and had a 54.72 shot attempt percentage during five on five play.

The move opens the door for defender Michal Kempny’s return after missing the rest of the latter portion of the regular season and playoffs last season, and the first three games of the 2019-20 season.

    *Update* 12:01p ET

The Washington Capitals have also announced that they have placed forward Travis Boyd on waivers.

Boyd is expected to be loaned to Hershey once he clears waivers.

Game Recap – 3/24/19 – Philadelphia Flyers v. Washington Capitals

    Philadelphia Flyers (36-31-8 80pts) v. Washington Capitals (43-24-8 94pts)

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals host the Philadelphia Flyers for an NBC matinee in their final meeting of the regular season. Early in the first period it would be the Capitals scorimg first as an Alex Ovechkin pass would be deflected to Nick Jensen who would shoot it from the point with Tom Wilson deflecting it past Briam Elliott for the 1-0 lead. The Capitals wouldvgain two powerplay opportunities, but would not be able to use them to build on their 1-0 lead going into the intermission.

In the second period it would be the Flyers dominating the play against the Capitals for the first half of the period, but it would be the Capitals who would strike once again with a deflection in front of the net this time Travis Boyd deflecting Matt Niskanen’s point shot. However, the Capitals would continuously go to the penalty box, and the third time would be the charm as Jakub Voracek would score for the Flyers on their third powerplay opportunity on a TJ Oshie holding call.

In the third period, it would be a tightly contested affair, but a Jakub Vrana breakaway courtesy of Brett Connolly would ice the game for the Capitals as they would sweep the regular season series with a 3-1 victory over the Flyers.

    Washington Capitals (24-12-4 52pts) v. Detroit Red Wings (16-20-7 39pts)

    Game Recap:

To start this game, both the Washington Capitals and Detroit Red Wings would have a feeling out process for the first few minutes, but then the Capitals would get a dominate shift from their second line that would carry over to their top line the very next shift as Tom Wilson would get the Capitals on the board first after continuing sustaining the pressure in the Red Wings zone. Then both teams would continue with some back and forth until Jakub Vrana turns the puck over in the defensive zone which leads to Anthony Mantha tying the game at one for the Red Wings. Late in the period the Capitals would get a powerplay after Dylan Larkin tripped Alex Ovechkin in the neutral zone, but would do nothing with it, and will have 37 seconds of powerplay time to start the second period.

Going into the second period the Capitals looked sluggish and their powerplay time was wasted away. Also as a result of their sloppy play, the Red Wings would capitalize on a tic-tac-toe play as Filip Hronek would score his third of the season to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead. The Capitals would then take back to back penalties in this very boring period. They would kill both penalties, and then would draw a penalty with 5 seconds left in the period.

The start of the third period was not very ideal as the Capitals could not generate on their powerplay to start the third period. However, it would be a smart play by Travis Boyd that would generate in him scoring to tie the game at 2 for the Capitals. The goal would breathe life into the Capitals and would force Niklas Kronwall to take a hooking penalty, and while the Capitals generated a few good looks, could not capitalize on yet another powerplay. The Capitals would continue the pressure and get an ugly knuckle puck goal from Michal Kempny that would hold as the game winner despite the barrage of penalties to both teams near the end of the game.

It was an ugly and boring win for the Capitals, but they ended their three game losing streak to end their road trip.

    Analysis:

This was a very good period for the Capitals that saw them strike early and strike consistently throughout the period. Great job by Dmitrij Jaskin for getting to the net and getting his first as a Capital.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to continue playing the way they are now and consistently pressuring the play in the Blue Jackets zone.

    PP                   0/3                  0/1

    Analysis:

This was a good period. The Capitals maintained the pace that they liked, and continued to pressure on the Blue Jackets defense.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals just need to keep it going. Keep pressuring the Blue Jackets, forcing turnovers and penalties. The Capitals need to do a much better job with their powerplay opportunities.

    Third Period:

Capitals Penalty – 2:44 – Dmitry Orlov 2 minutes for Tripping

Capitals Goal – 11:04 – Travis Boyd (1) from Alex Ovechkin (14) and Nic Dowd (4)

    PP                 0/3                    0/4

    Analysis:

A good overall game for the Capitals as they end their 3 game road trip with a victory over their Metropolitan Division rival Blue Jackets. The 3rd period though the Capitals took too many penalties which allowed the Blue Jackets an opportunity to get back into this game but Braden Holtby would be strong in net.
