Canes Drop Devils in OT to Advance

New Jersey Devils @ Carolina Hurricanes

    (CAR wins series 4-1)

    Game Recap:

Following a crushing 6-1 loss and being forced to the brink of elimination, the New Jersey Devils look to fight another day as they take on the Carolina Hurricanes in enemy territory in game five. It was a pretty even first period with both teams trading some chances. However, it would be the Devils who would breakthrough at the 15:06 mark with a Dawson Mercer goal and get on the board first. Mercer would deflect the puck in on a long cross ice pass to give New Jersey the 1-0 lead and take the lead into the intermission.

Jacob Slavin got the Hurricanes on the scoreboard early in the early seconds of period two as he would wrist a shot from the point that way find it’s way to get by goalie Akira Schmid to tie the score up at one. Fast forward about seven minutes give or take, Timo Meier would pot one in on the power play off of a rebound from a Dougie Hamilton shot to give the Devils a 2-1 lead. Carolina did get the equalize from Brent Burns late in the period as he whipped a shot through traffic and in to tie the score up 2-2. We would take that score into the third period.

Period three was a very eventful one with both the Devils and Hurricanes trading multiple chances. Each team came super close but both Akira Schmid & Frederik Andersen kept their respective teams in this game and the puck out of the net. This game would now move onto overtime with the Devils hoping to stay alive, while the Hurricanes look to move onto the Eastern Conference Final.

In overtime, Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler would send a puck over the glass for a delay of game penalty to put the Carolina Hurricanes on the power play. The Canes would certainly take advantage as Jesper Fast would tip in a shot from Jesperi Kotkaniemi for the overtime game winner to help Carolina advance to the conference final. The Hurricanes now await the winner of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers matchup.

Canes Decimate the Devils in Game 4

Carolina Hurricanes @ New Jersey Devils

    (CAR leads series 3-1)

    Game Recap:

After a wild victory the other night, the New Jersey Devils looks to even up the series against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Devils did get off to a good fast start thanks to a Jack Hughes goal that he redirected off of a Timo Meier shot to give their team a 1-0 lead. It would remain that way for a while until late in the period Martin Necas tied things up scoring on a 2 on 1 that was created off of a turnover in the neutral zone. After the first period the score would be tied 1-1.

Things started to unravel for New Jersey in the second period as the Hurricanes scored five times to really put themselves out in front as they got goals from Martin Necas (second of the game), Brett Pesce, Jesper Fast, Brent Burns, & the especially red hot Jordan Martinook. The explosion of offense would put Carolina up 6-1 after two periods.

Period three saw the Hurricanes shut down the Devils the rest of the way and not giving them much opportunity at all to get back in this one and would warn the victory by a final score of 6-1. The Devils backs are against the wall not facing elimination against the Hurricanes in game five on Thursday night down in Ralieigh.

Devils Blow Past Canes in Wild Game 3 Victory

Carolina Hurricanes @ New Jersey Devils

    (CAR leads series 2-1)

    Game Recap:

To say this afternoon‘s game between the New Jersey Devils and Carolina Hurricanes was interesting would be an understatement. This game was wild on the scoresheet all around. It features power play goals, short handed goals, a penalty shot goal, and several multi point players in this thrilling game three matchup. New Jersey dictated the play in period one as they would get off to a 3-0 lead thanks to goals from Timo Meier, a Shorthanded goal from Michael McLeod on a nice individual effort, and Jack Hughes on a top shelf shot off of a give and go. It would be Devils up by three after the first period.

Nico Hischier would end Hurricanes goalie Frederik Andersen’s night with an early second period goal just fifty three seconds in. Pyotr Kochetkov would enter the game hoping to clean up the mess but unfortunately to no avail. Sebastian Aho respond about a minute later to get his team on the board before Damon Severson extended the Devils lead to 5-1 at the 5:33 mark. Carolina did get one more goal before the period was up as Jordan Martinook was awarded a penalty shot while his team was Shorthanded on the PK and converted to get the score to 5-2 and it would remain that way the rest of the period.

If you thought the scoring was over, you were clearly wrong. Miles Wood would score at the 3:08 mark receiving a beautiful stretch pass from the goal line in the breakout where he took the puck in on a beautiful effort by him and slid the puck five hole for the Devils sixth goal of the game. Moments later we saw Jack Hughes roof one that barely got over the goalie to increase the lead to seven. Game still not crazy enough yet? Then we saw two consecutive shorthanded goals by Carolina as Jordan Stall and Seth Jarvis would score to get the game within three. Finally the scoring ended as Ondrej Palat would pot one in on the power play with a one timer set up by Jesper Bratt. The New Jersey Devils went on to beat the Carolina Hurricanes in a wild one by a final score of 8-4 as we now turn the page to game four on Tuesday night at the Prudential Center.

Canes Dominate Devils to Take Game 1

New Jersey Devils @ Carolina Hurricanes

    (CAR leads series 1-0)

    Game Recap:

Tonight begins round two of the Stanley Cup playoffs and this matchup features first of a best of seven between the visiting New Jersey Devils and hosting Carolina Hurricanes. The Devils are coming off a shutout victory in game seven against the New York Rangers while the Hurricanes vanquished the New York Islanders in six games. New Jersey is without the services of prized acquisition Timo Meier after suffering an injury due to a Jacob Trouba hit the previous game. Unfortunately for the Devils, this was a game they want to turn the page and do better next game. Carolina got off to a great start by scoring twice in the first period thanks to goals from Brett Pesce and Seth Jarvis to make it 2-0 in favor of the Hurricanes heading into the second period.

Jesperi Kotkaniemi kept the momentum going as he scored early on at the 1:55 mark of period two putting the puck in at the side of the net for his first goal of the playoffs. Moments later, the Devils got on the board thanks to a Nathan Bastian breakaway goal to get his team within two. That would be the only goal New Jersey would get the rest of the way.

Carolina added two more goals from Brady Skjei and an empty netter from Jesper Fast to seal the victory by a final score of 5-1. The Hurricanes did to the Devils what they normal do to other teams which is use their high attack speed and used it against them. Both teams are back in action for game two on Friday night in Raleigh.

  • Devils Advance with Game 7 Shutout

Devils Advance with Game 7 Shutout

New York Rangers @ New Jersey Devils

    (NJ wins series 4-3)

    Game Recap:

Two words…Game Seven! That’s where we’re at tonight’s as the New Jersey Devils host their Hudson River rivals in the New York Rangers in a winner take all game to see who moves onto the next round to face off against the Carolina Hurricanes. It doesn’t get any better than a game seven with everything on the line in a win or go home situation. Both teams were feeling things out trying to see who would make the first mistake but alas, neither team did and it would be a scoreless first period.

However, the second period is where things started to pick up between the two teams. New Jersey’s speed was a lot to handle for the Rangers as they were pinned in their own zone and New Jersey did a great job using that speed to get out of their own zone to transition into offense effectively. Using that speed paid off as the Devils got a short handed goal thanks to great huddle and effort from Ondrej Palat who took the puck to the net and then teammate Michael McLeod buried the rebound into the back of the net for the first goal of the game. Moments later, Tomas Tatar extended the lead to two as defenseman John Marino’s backhand feed from the goal line gave him the chance to rip it behind Igor Shesterkin to make it 2-0 in favor of the New Jersey Devils. That would be the score heading into an exciting and final finish of this game in the third period.

And the third period was exciting as the Devils were able to put away their rivals thanks to a one timer goal from Erik Haula, and an empty netter from Jesper Bratt to seal the victory and shutout as they defeat the Rangers by a final score of 4-0. Akira Schmid rebounded very well with 31 saves and the speedy Devils put the Rangers on their heels all evening long giving them not very much room to work with. New Jersey advances onto round two of the Stanley Cup playoffs and will play the Carolina Hurricanes.

  • Rangers Win, Game 7 Here We Come

Rangers Win, Game 7 Here We Come

New Jersey Devils @ New York Rangers

    (Series tied 3-3)

    Game Recap:

Tonight, the New Jersey Devils have a chance to eliminate their arch rivals in the New York Rangers in game six of the first round of these Stanley Cup playoffs. It’s been all New Jersey the last three games as they’ve turned this series around in their favor after being down 0-2 to start the playoffs. Speed was in full force the first period as the Devils were doing a good job hammering the Rangers in their own zone. As a result later on they would get on the board first as Curtis Lazar would put in the rebound shot from the point by Kevin Bahl to make it 1-0 in favor or the Devils. Late in the period, a tripping call would out the Rangers in the power play and saw them finally breakthrough their struggles as Chris Kreider would deflect in a shot from Mika Zabanejad at the left face off circle to tie the game up at one. That wouldn’t be the only tripping penalty as Ondrej Palat would take one with seconds to go and give the Rangers a power play to begin the second period. After the first period, the score would be tied 1-1.

New York didn’t get the lead on that power play but, they did past the midway mark of the second period thanks to a goal from Mika Zabanejad. He received a backhanded pass into the high slot from Chris Kreider and fired a wrist shot that would beat Devils goalie Akira Schmid. Another late period goal would hurt New Jersey as Vladimir Tarasenko would fire one from the high slot to extend the Rangers lead to 3-1 heading into the third period.

The Rangers weren’t done scoring as they struck twice in the third and final period thanks to goals from Barclay Goodrow and Braden Schneider to make it 5-1 in favor of the Rangers. Devils goalie Akira Schmid was pulled in favor of back up Vitek Vanecek. New Jersey added a late power play goal from Dawson Mercer but, at that point it was too late as the Rangers win 5-2 and force a winner take all game seven back in New Jersey on Monday night.

Oh Schmid! Devils Shutout Rangers and Take Series Lead

New York Rangers @ New Jersey Devils

    (NJ leads series 3-2)

    Game Recap:

Looking to maintain the momentum they’ve built and take a series lead, the New Jersey Devils return home to host the New York Rangers in game five at the Prudential Center. It didn’t take long for the Devils to get out in front as Ondrej Palat scored thirty nine seconds into the game to give New Jersey a 1-0 lead. Palat put in a rebound shot in the offensive zone off of a face off for the quick and early goal. Goalie Akira Schmid made some incredible saves to keep the lead heading into the second period.

Erik Haula began his excellent night in the second period with a power play goal as he deflected in a shot from Dawson Mercer for the tip in to extend his team’s lead to two. New Jersey wouldn’t be done scoring just yet. Ten minutes later while in the penalty kill, the Rangers would cough the puck up at the point and put the Devils on a two on one chance where Dawson Mercer buried a feed from Erik Haula to make it 3-0 in favor of the Devils. It would remain a three goal lead heading into the final frame.

Akira Schmid continued to provide excellent goaltending in between the pipes, while the Devils defense gave the New York Rangers not many options throughout the evening. You could sense the frustration from the Rangers with the lack of production throughout the entire lineup the last few games. Later on, Erik Haula added his second goal of the game and third of the playoffs with an empty net goal to seal the shutout victory as the New Jersey Devils defeated the New York Rangers by a final score of 4-0. Akira Schmid made twenty three saves to earn the shutout victory and was phenomenal all evening long. The Devils have a chance to send their Hudson River rivals packing if they can win game six on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.

  • Devils Hang On and Even Series

Devils Hang On and Even Series

New Jersey Devils @ New York Rangers

    (Series tied 2-2)

    Game Recap:

After getting back into the series on Saturday night, tonight the New Jersey Devils look to get things even between them and the New York Rangers at MSG. Things got a little interesting early on during a mad scramble in front of Devils goalie Akira Schmidt’s crease. Fortunately for New Jersey was able to clear the puck thanks to Jonas Siegenthaler who was able to spring Jack Hughes on a breakaway where he beat goalie Igor Shesterkin for his third goal of the playoffs. After all the early commotion, things calmed down even after both teams had power play chances with the Devils taking a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

Period two saw a tight and defensive minded type of period with the New Jersey Devils stifling the Rangers in particular on the power play. The Rangers couldn’t get much going with the Devils being physical as well as limiting and blocking shots. Akira Schmid was solid in net building off the good way he began in the first period. After two periods, the Devils would maintain their 1-0 lead over the Rangers with hopes of expanding on it.

Unfortunately for the Devils, the Rangers got the score evened up thanks to a Vincent Trocheck goal which was his first of the playoffs. Trocheck scored off of a Chris Kreider rebound shot and got the goal to help his team breakthrough for the first time in this game. The scored would be tied at one for about six minutes or so until Jonas Siegenthaler got a cross ice pass and fired a beauty that would beat Igor Shesterkin to regain New Jersey’s lead. Down to the very end it would remain close until Ondrej Palat would score an empty net goal to seal the victory and make it 3-1 as well as tie the series up at two a piece. Akira Schmid made 23 saves for the Devils on the way to victory. Next up is game five back in the Garden State at the Prudential Center in Newark on Thursday night.

Devils Win in OT, Back in the Series

New Jersey Devils @ New York Rangers

    (Rangers lead series 2-1)

    Game Recap:

With the New York Rangers having a two games to none series advantage, the New Jersey Devils are hoping to get back into the thick of things with a victory in game three as Akira Schmid takes the reigns in goal tonight, instead of Vitek Vanecek. The first period was a quiet one with no goals put up on the scoreboard. New Jersey did lead in shots on goal with nothing to show for it just like their rival Rangers. It would be tied 0-0 going into the intermission.

Period two is where the scoring began as the Rangers would get on the board first thanks to a goal from Chris Kreider, he blasted a shot from a feed by Mika Zibanejad for a 1-0 lead. About seven minutes later, Jack Hughes tied the game for New Jersey on the power play as a fired a shot from the face off circle. After two periods, the scores would be tied up 1–1.

For the final frame of regulation, it would remain scoreless despite the Devils and Rangers hoping to avoid overtime. However, that’s where the game headed with the score being tied 1-1. Dougie Hamilton would be the overtime hero for the New Jersey Devils at the 11:36 mark. Hamilton would receive a twister esque pass from Jesper Bratt to the right face off circle and then fire it upstairs to beat Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin to give the Devils a 2-1 victory and get them back in the series after losing the first two games at home. New Jersey looks to tie up the series at two on Monday night as the series reconvenes at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Rangers Dominate Devils in Game 1

New York Rangers @ New Jersey Devils

    (NY Rangers lead series 1-0)

    Game Recap:

Welcome to round one of the Stanley Cup playoffs! Tonight’s matchup features the New York Rangers heading across the Hudson River to take on their arch nemesis and rivals in the New Jersey Devils at the Prudential Center for game one. From the get go, the Rangers set the tone early and got on the board first thanks to a goal from Vladimir Tarasenko in the slot who roofed it passed goalie Vitek Vanecek for the 1-0 lead. At the 9:30 mark, Chris Kreider created some team history as he tipped in a Adam Fox shot to extend New York’s lead to 2-0 and become the highest goal scorer in Rangers playoff history. The Devils looked good but a lack of getting shots on goal put them behind by two heading into the second period.

The middle frame was relatively quiet with some chances traded between both sides until Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren caught the goalie down early with plenty of room upstairs and fired it in from a sharp angle. Lindgren’s goal made it 3-0 in favor of the Rangers who would take that lead into the final period.

Midway through period three, Chris Kreider tipped in another one on the power play to extend the Rangers lead to four. New Jersey struggled scoring all night until they were awarded a penalty shot where Jack Hughes finally helped the Devils solve goalie Igor Shesterkin to end his shutout bid for his first goal of the playoffs. New York put the game away for good thanks to a Filip Chytil empty net goal and would earn the Rangers a 5-1 victory and early 1-0 series advantage in this best of seven matchup. Both teams get back at it for game two on Thursday night with the Rangers hoping to extend their series lead, while the Devils hope to even things up at one a piece.
