Gameday Recap: Nashville Predators vs. Dallas Stars (First Round: Game 3)

    Nashville Predators at Dallas Stars
    Series Tied 1-1

    Game Recap:

In Game 3 of this match, the first period would be a fast-paced period both teams going on the power play.  There would be a lot of puck possession between both squads and there would be a lot of excellent chances for the teams to score.  Both teams would lay out their fair share of hits in the contest, with the Stars having 20 hits in the first period to Nashville’s 10.

In the second period, Rocco Grimaldi would get his second goal in the series when the puck would bounce off of Dallas goaltender Ben Bishop at the 3:29 mark.  Dallas would get a few chances to tie the score in the next couple of minutes after Grimaldi’s goal but Rinne would stop those shots with great saves.  Nashville would then kill off a 5 on 3 penalty, with the Stars getting several chances at the net.  Possession would then swing back Nashville’s way before they would turn over the puck to the Stars who would then hold on before an offsides call was made midway through the period.  Filip Forsberg would make the contest 2-0 Nashville with 5:25 left in the period.  After a great set-up play, Mats Zuccarello would get the Stars on the board with under 3 minutes to play in the period, and the goal would inject some life into the Stars bench.  Austin Watson would be called for a  tripping penalty with 25 seconds remaining in the period, giving the Stars a chance to tie the game with an extra man when they have 1:35 left on the power play going into the third period.

Going into the third period, Nashville would be successful in killing off the penalty and Nashville would get some chances to get a comfortable lead.  The period would have the puck go back and forth until Dallas would score at the 8:15 mark in the period with Tyler Seguin getting the goal to tie the game a 2.  Nashville would get the lead back after a faceoff and the puck would bounce off of Dallas D Miro Heiskanen’s stick at the 11:41 mark in the period and Nashville Mikhail Granlund would be awarded the goal.  Dallas would get several chances in the front of the net, however, Pekka Rinne would makes several saves after the hacks and whacks at the net.  Dallas would pull Ben Bishop with 2:11 left in the contest to add six attackers to try and tie the score but it would not help out and Nashville would escape with a Game 3 win, and the 2-1 series lead.

    Dallas Stars at Nashville Predators
(Dallas Stars lead the series 1-0)

In Game 2 of this series…

In the first period, tempers would flare out with a lot of pushing and shoving near the net post whistles and the Predators could not find their way out of the penalty box with Austin Watson being called for a slashing penalty early in the period.  Mattias Ekholm would be issued a double minor half way through the period.  In the final five minutes of the contest, both teams would get several possessions of the puck and each team would do their best to get the puck to the back of the net.  Toward the end of the period, Dallas’ Roman Polak and Nashville’s Blake Comeau would both be dealt matching roughing penalties.  Look for Nashville’s forward to come out with firepower to get the goals.  Dallas will look to rely on Ben Bishop to play lights out and prevent Nashville from getting any goals.

In the second period, Jamie Benn would get an early goal.  Rocco Grimaldi would later tie the game at 1 two minutes later in the contest.  This would be Grimaldi’s first postseason goal.  During a scramble, Dallas Mattias Janmark would take a hit and as a precaution, he left the ice to be looked at.  Nashville’s Mattias Ekholm would be called for boarding, his third penalty in the contest.  On that penalty kill, Nashville would prevent the Stars from scoring, after having several chances and good looks at the net.  The second period would end with good chances by both teams but much like the end of the first period, neither team would take advantage of the chances.  Going into the third period, both teams need to whatever they can to avoid the penalty box, as it is a critical period in the contest, especially for the Predators.

The third period would be a period in which both teams would not take any calculated risks, as they were both avoiding the penalty box.  There would also be a strong defencive showing from both teams throughout the first six minutes of the period.  At the 13:35 mark in the period, both teams would take shots at each other, throwing punches.  This would lead to a penalty being called on Nashville’s Craig Smith at the 6:35 mark.  There would not be any other action going on as both teams did their best to move the puck around and take shots at the net.  The game would remain tied at 1 heading into the overtime frame.

To start out the overtime frame, Nashville would spend the first 90 seconds in Dallas’ zone getting several shots on net, but none would net the game winner.  When Dallas gained momentum on the next faceoff, the Stars had a great shot at a goal before Nashville goaltender Pekka Rinne made the save.  Craig Smith would get his first postseason goal on the 2019 postseason with a bouncing puck that would get past Ben Bishop and give the Nashville Predators the 2-1 win in overtime and tie the series at 1 game a piece.

Game Recap – 1/15/2019 – Washington Capitals v. Nashville Predators

    Washington Capitals (27-13-5 59pts) v. Nashville Predators (27-16-4 58pts)

    Game Recap:

To start this game, there was some good pace between both the Washington Capitals and Nashville Predators, but it would be the Predators who would strike first when they pick off a pass from Tom Wilson to Alex Ovechkin and Mattias Ekholm sends Viktor Arvidsson streaking into the Capitals zone for the first goal of the game. The Capitals would respond well with a couple shifts, but their aggressiveness caused them to give up a few too many odd man rushes and the Predators would capitalize as Nick Bonino would score to make it 2-0 on a 2-1 break with Colton Sissons. The rest of the period would show some more good back and forth, but the Predators were very good at creating odd man rushes, and breaking up the Capitals plays in the offensive zone.

To start the second period, the Predators would strike fast as Arvidsson would deflect a PK Subban point shot for his second goal of the game. Then some frustration would boil over as Jakub Vrana would get called for Slashing in the neutral zone behind the play to give the Predators the first powerplay of the game. Once the penalty was killed the Capitals would surge with a really strong shift that featured Wilson almost scoring but getting the post instead, and eventually drawing a penalty against the Predators for their first powerplay of the game. On the powerplay the Capitals would make the penalty killers move around and scramble, and then it would be a point blast from John Carlson that would go wide on purpose for Nicklas Backstrom to tip in for the powerplay goal. The Capitals would keep that fire burning as they would dominate at 5 on 5 for the next few shifts, and draw another tripping penalty on the Predators to go back on the powerplay. However, a horrible zone entry by Backstrom would result in Ryan Johansen chipping the puck up to Arvidsson who would score his second breakaway goal for the hat trick. Then on a one on one play into the zone, despite Jonas Siegenthaler’s best efforts, Rocco Grimaldi would make a really good move and an even better backhand shot to beat Pheonix Copley to make it 5-1. Then in the wanning seconds of the second period, Nick Bonino would tip in a point from Mattias Ekholm to make it 6-1.

The 3rd period happened. Cool if we don’t talk about it? Yea… Thanks for understanding.
