    NHL Announces Three Stars of the Week for 10/7-10/13

    Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of October 7th through 13th.

     

    First Star – Connor McDavid (C, Edmonton Oilers)

    • McDavid lead the NHL with five powerplay points (2g, 3a) in three contests that saw him combine for a total of two goals and five assist for seven points, and would help the Oilers win their first five games of the season for the third time in franchise history. McDavid would record a three assist game against the New York Islanders on October 8th, then would collect two points (1g, 1a) against the New Jersey Devils on October 10th, and would score the game winning goal against the New York Rangers on October 12th.

    Second Star – Patrik Laine (RW, Winnipeg Jets)

    • Laine led the NHL in points with eight (2g, 6a) in four games as the Jets picked up three wins out of four games. Laine would record his first career three assist game against the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 8th, then would have a four point game (2g, 2a) against the Minnesota Wild on October 10th. Laine would also have an assist in the Jets loss to the Penguins on October 13th.

    Third Star – Sidney Crosby (C, Pittsburgh Penguins)

    • Crosby would compile seven points (3g, 4a) for the Penguins in four games as they closed the week with a three game winning streak. Crosby scored once against the Jets on October 8th, then registered two points (1g, 1a) on October 10th against the Anaheim Ducks and again on October 12th against the Wild. Crosby would notch two more assists on October 13th against the Jets to finish the week.

    Game 3 Recap – Winnipeg Jets v. St. Louis Blues

    Once again, the Winnipeg Jets came out playing much better than the St. Louis Blues, taking an 11-4 lead in shots. However, a timely shot by David Perron (who should be immortalized in STL lore because of his unwavering desire to keep coming back to the city), gave the Blues a 1-0 lead, with Jordan Binnington picking up the vaunted goalie assist (#assistington?).

    It stayed that way until the second when Kevin Hayes scored a flukey goal that was tipped in by Alex Pietrangelo. Then Patrick Laine scored. Sure, why not – what’s a game between these teams without Laine scoring. His shoulder has to be tired by now, right? Kyle Connor then makes it 3-1 on a 4 on 3 PP.

    The third period Brough two more goals for WPG – one a nice play, one a rather poor goal let up by Binnington (hopefully no more of those). The Blues managed one, but this was not their game. The final ended up being 6-3, but it was a lot more lopsided than that.

    Connor Hellebuyck wasn’t there to bail them out this time. If the Blues play like this the rest of the way, expect WPG to win in 6.

    I don’t expect the same play in Game 4, Wednesday at 9:30 PM Eastern.

    Game Recap – 1st Rd. Game 2 – St. Louis Blues v. Winnipeg Jets

    The Blues experienced a much different start of the game in Game 2, with Oskar Sundqvist scoring early on to take a 1-0 lead. The Blues spent the majority of the first 10 minutes on the power play because of a few rather egregious cross-checks by the Jets, but  were not able to capitalize. When Colton Parayko was not aware that penalty time was expiring and had his shot blocked, Blake Wheeler took advantage and quickly scored to tie it at one. Overall, not a great period, given the opportunities the Blues had.

    The Jets came out flying in the second, and basically dominated the first several minutes, but for a few spectacular saves from Jordan Binnington. After Robert Bortuzzo took a senseless, senseless interference penalty, the Blues, naturally, left Patrick Laine completely open for another goal to give the Jets a 2-1 lead. The Jets kept up their inexorable pressure after, but an incredible play by Robert Thomas led to a Pat Maroon goal to make it 2-2. Sundqvist’s second goal gave them a 3-2 lead – soft goal by Connor Hellebuyck, who has not been nearly good enough this series. Now seems like a good time for a friendly reminder that the Blues traded Ryan Reaves for Sundqvist and high-potential prospect Klim Kostin, which…wow.

    Play evened out after that, with Hellebuyck making a tremendous (see: lucky) save on O’Reilly to keep the blues from taking a 4-2 lead. Shortly thereafter, a (weak) penalty call on Robert Thomas led to another WPG PP goal to tie it at 3.

    WPG was controlling play pretty well at the beginning of the third, but another soft goal, this time by Ryan O’Reilly allowed the Blues to take a 4-3 lead. The rest of the game can pretty much be summed up with this: Jordan Binnington was incredible.

    First in the NHL…

    Yesterday’s schedule of games:

     

    Washington 5, NY RANGERS 3

    The Washington Capitals staged the 50th multi-goal comeback win on the NHL season yesterday afternoon when they defeated the NY Rangers 5-3.

    TORONTO 6, Philadelphia 0

    Andreas Johnsson had a hat trick, and achieved the mark in the first period.  Johnsson is the first player to score three goals in the first period since Wendell Clark on October 11, 1986.  Johnsson is the eighth player to score a hat trick in the first period.

    With the 6-0 win, this marks the largest margin of victory in a shutout at home since they defeated the Buffalo Sabres 7-0.

     

     

    Boston 3, MONTREAL 2

    Boston’s D John Moore would go on to score the game-winner for the Bruins, the first goal of his career.

     

    Buffalo 3, DETROIT 2 (SO)

    The Buffalo Sabres in this contest would win their ninth straight, the most since the 2006-07 season when they won 10 straight.


    Jeff Skinner of the Sabres scored his 18th goal on the season, the most so far on the season.  This is Skinner’s first season with the Buffalo Sabres.

    Chicago 5, FLORIDA 4 (OT)

    The Chicago Blackhawks would go on to win their first road game since their win on October 20th at the Columbus Blue Jackets when Chicago’s Erik Gustafsson would score the game-winner in the overtime frame.

    In the last 14 games between the two teams, Chicago has a record of 12-2-0 against Florida.

    NY ISLANDERS 4, Carolina 1

    NY Islanders Josh Bailey had his sixth multi-point game of the season, leading the team.  Bailey had 20 multi-point games during the 2017-18 campaign.

    PITTSBURGH 4, Columbus 2

    Pittsburgh Penguins Jake Guentzel had a hat trick of his own in the 4-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets last night.

    Winnipeg 8, ST. LOUIS 4

    Patrik Laine scored on five different occasions to help the Winnipeg Jets defeat the St. Louis Blues 8-4 at Enterprise Center in St. Louis last night.

    Laine joins three other players to have a five-goal performance before their 21st birthday.

    COLORADO 3, Dallas 2

     

    VEGAS 6, San Jose 0

    The Vegas Golden Knights scored the fastest goal in franchise history in the shutout over the San Jose Sharks last night.

    Marc-Andre Fleury posted a shutout in consecutive appearances for the third time.  He is also the second goalie in the expansion era to have at least 5 shutouts in 25 teams games in two different seasons.  He joins Ed Belfour on this list for such an achievement.

     

    Vancouver 4, LOS ANGELES 2

    Vancouver Canucks rookie Elias Pettersson had a multi-point contest and Adam Gaudette scored his first NHL goal in the 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center in Los Angeles last night.
