    Game Recap – 10/10/2019 – Washington Capitals v. Nashville Predators

    Washington Capitals (2-0-2 6pts) v. Nashville Predators (2-1-0 4pts)

     

    Game Recap:

    Heading into Nashville to start a quick two game road trip, the Washington Capitals look to get back into the win column after two consecutive overtime defeats at home. However it would be the Predators on the quick pounce as they would get four shots in the first three minutes of the game. After a little over 8 minutes played the Predators would be outshooting the Capitals 7-3, and Braden Holtby had to come up huge to deny Matt Duchene, but after the TV break Lars Eller would knock in the loose puck in the crease after a mad scramble around the Predators net. However, the Predators would respond when Jakub Vrana would do a very poor break out pass attempt and Filip Forsberg would get a breakaway opportunity and rip the puck past Holtby to tie the game. After both goals were scored the Capitals would get a powerplay opportunity, but could not capitalize and then gave the Predators two powerplay opportunities which they would kill going into the first intermission tied at one a piece.

     

    In the second period the Capitals would get an early powerplay opportunity on a Colton Sissons high sticking penalty, and it would take the Capitals about 30 seconds of powerplay time for Alex Ovechkin to crank a one timer past Pekka Rinne to give the Capitals the 2-1 lead. However, the lead would not last long as the Predators would take advantage of a stretch pass that scattered the Capitals defense to give Ryan Johansen his first goal of the season to tie the game at two. After giving up the tying goal Garnet Hathaway would be called for interference, but Tom Wilson would wrist a beautiful shot past Rinne for the shorthanded goal to give the Capitals the 3-2 lead. A little later into the period the Capitals first line of Wilson, Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom would do a very good job of cycling the puck to result in a Roman Josi penalty, and on the powerplay Ovechkin would bomb his second powerplay goal of the game to make it 4-2 Capitals.

     

    Then in the third period the Capitals would lay back and take a bad penalty that would allow the PRedators to get back in the game starting with Ryan Johensan scoring his second of the game while on the powerplay, then a minute ten seconds later Matt Duchene would score his first goal as a Nashville Predator to tie the game at four a piece. However, Dmitry Orlov would lead a rally as he would have a huge shift that would have him finding TJ Oshie who would bury the puck to make it 5-4 Capitals. But it wouldn’t last long as the Predators would get goals from Nick Bonino and Mattias Ekholm in a 28 second span to give the Predators a 6-5 lead over the Capitals. The Capitals would pull Braden Holtby for the extra attacker, and draw one last powerplay, but the Capitals could not comeback after blowing their third consecutive third period lead as they fall to the Predators 6-5.

    Game 4 Recap:

    The Tampa Bay Lightning, clinging onto life in the series, would be called with an early slashing penalty just 45 seconds into the period.  On that power play, Columbus would strike with a goal by Alexandre Texier, his first in the postseason.  Pierre-Luc Dubois would make the game a 2-0 game just a minute later and then at the 8:44 mark, Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos would make it 2-1 contest.  At the 11:41 mark, Lightning F Nikita Kucherov would be called for a tripping penalty and it was thought that Cam Atkinson would make it a 3-1 contest before Tampa Bay would challenge the goal.  The challenge would turn out to be successful, as the Blue Jackets would be called offsides, with 7:37 left in the period.  Columbus would try several more times to get the lead back to two goals, but Tampa Bay goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy would make several saves.  Columbus goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky would make great saves as well and has played a great first 20 minutes, despite allowing the goal by Stamkos.

    The play in the second period would start out slow but both teams would get several shots off. Blue Jackets D Seth Jones make the score 3-1 with his second goal of the series at the 6:28 mark in the period, with Cam Atkinson and Matt Duchene registering their second and fourth assists, respectively, in the postseason.  Tampa Bay would get great looks and shots, but Bobrovsky would do everything he could to turn aside all the shots he faced, especially a great rebound shot from Brayden Point.  However, that shot would go wide from the net as well.  Tampa Bay has been fighting to stay alive not only in the period, but in this contest as well.  The Lightning in the next thirty minutes of the contest need to have more of their top players producing.  Cedric Paquette would bring the Lightning back to within a goal with his first goal of the postseason when the puck would bounce off the top of the crossbar and into the back of the net.  The Tampa Bay Lightning would tie the game at 3 when Brayden Point would score a power play goal, off of the David Savard penalty for Cross-checking.  Columbus would take back the lead with Oliver Bjorkstrand’s second goal of the playoffs just a minute after Point’s goal.

     

    The third period in the contest would contain a few chances for both teams and there would be a lot of hacking and whacking for control of the puck around the boards for possession of the puck.  Five minutes into the period, Anthony Cirelli of the Lightning would breakdown the ice before losing possession of the puck and Tampa would regain possession but it would not be enough as Columbus would regain puck possession.  Throughout the first seven minutes of the third period, there would be a lot of turnovers due to the high action of plays going on from both teams.  In the final five minutes, Artemi Panarin had a great chance to make it a 5-3 Columbus game but the shot would  miss the net by a couple of feet and then Tampa Bay would come racing down the ice to try and make it a 4-4 game but Bobrovsky would freeze the puck and we get the whistle stop play with 3:58 left in the period.  Tampa Bay would pull Vasilevskiy with 2:10 left in the period to give the Lightning an extra skater but that would prove to be costly as Artemi Panarin would score the empty netter to give the Columbus a 5-3 lead with 1:53 left in the contest.  19 seconds later, Alexandre Texier would score an empty netter to seal the win for the Columbus Blue Jackets.  Matt Duchene would score the third empty net goal with nine seconds left to give Columbus the 7-3 win over the Lightning.

     

    The Columbus Blue Jackets win their first playoff series, sweeping the Lightning, and now await the winner of the Toronto Maple Leafs v. Boston Bruins.

     

    With the loss by the Tampa Bay Lightning, they become the first team in NHL history to win the Presidents’ Trophy AND get swept in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

    The unthinkable has happened in this series folks. The Columbus Blue Jackets continued their dominance of the Tampa Bay Lightning in a 3-1 win and now lead their best of seven series 3-0. If you asked any analyst, any hockey fan, anyone who knew the sport at all a few weeks ago and they all would’ve told you the same thing: The Lightning were going to win this series. Now? The Blue Jackets are making us all eat crow and they are shocking the entire world. Game Three Recap. Let’s do this.

    After a scoreless first period where the Blue Jackets poured ten shots on in front of their home crowd, they got them out of their seats early in the second period when Matt Duchene would break the ice. After a big shot from the point, Duchene jumped on the rebound and backhanded it into a basically open cage for a 1-0 Blue Jackets lead. The Nationwide Arena crowd was getting into it now and the Lightning were still unprepared for the storm to come.

    Later in the second period, Oliver Bjorkstrand, who is having a nice resurgence since the second half of the season, would strike and give the Blue Jackets a 2-0 lead midway into the second period. After a solid cross-ice dish from Seth Jones, Bjorkstrand would snipe the puck past Andrei Vasilevskiy with a absolute laser of a shot. The Blue Jackets were rolling and they weren’t backing down. But the Lightning found a bit of a spark.

    Early in the third period, Ondrej Palat would give the Lightning a much needed goal. A net-front redirection would cut the Blue Jackets lead to 2-1 and cause a little panic to run through Nationwide Arena. The third period would see the Lightning fail to score again though and the Blue Jackets would get an empty-net tally from Cam Atkinson to go up 3-1 late in the third period. The Blue Jackets would tae game three and send Nationwide into a frenzy.

    They are shocking the hockey world. They are shocking the entire sports world. Could the Blue Jackets close out the series in game four at Nationwide on Tuesday? It’s entirely possible. The Jackets are proving us wrong every day; they are making fools out of their doubters. Jarmo Kekalainen made some power moves at the deadline in hopes of the Cup making it’s way to Columbus. His dream looks more like a reality than it has all season.

    Blue Jackets Lead 1-0

     

    Game Recap:

    With the Columbus Blue Jackets leading the series going into game 2, the Tampa Bay Lightning will be looking to even up the series at one game a piece, however, the Blue Jackets would have other things on mind. A little over five minutes into the game Cam Atkinson would score his first goal of the playoffs to give Columbus an early 1-0 lead. The Blue Jackets aggressive play would force the Lightning to take two bad penalties. Columbus would not be able to capitalize on their first powerplay, but it would only take four seconds on the second powerplay as Zach Werenski would get the puck off a clean faceoff win from Matt Duchene and rip it right on net for his first of the playoffs and give Columbus a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission.

     

    The second period would not start well for the Lightning as Alex Killorn would take a horrible interference penalty. As a result, the Blue Jackets would strike again. This time Duchene getting his first career playoff goal to give the Blue Jackets a 3-0 lead. The Lightning would get their first powerplay opportunity when Columbus would be called for too many men, however, they would not capitalize on the powerplay, but the Lightning would gain some momentum.

     

    For the third period, the Lightning would come out fired up and force the play against the Blue Jackets. The Lightning’s heavy forechecking would result in a Mikhail Sergachev goal to cut the Blue Jackets lead to two, but the Blue Jackets would respond as Riley Nash would snipe one past Andrei Vasilevskiy to give Columbus their three goal lead back. Not long after getting their three goal lead back, the Blue Jackets would strike again as Artemi Panarin would score his first of the playoffs to give the Blue Jackets a commanding 5-1 lead. Things would get ugly though as after Nikita Kucherov tripped up Makus Nutivaara, he would proceed to board Nutivaara while he was defenseless thus earning a 5 minute major and a game misconduct which should be reviewed by the League for supplementary discipline.

    The Detroit Red Wings had another comeback in their contest against the New Jersey Devils yesterday afternoon.  The Red Wings came back from a 2-0 deficit to win the contest..

    Tampa Bay 6, PHILADELPHIA 5 (OT)

    Brayden Point had consecutive multi-goal games for the first time in his career and joined three other players in Tampa Bay Lightning history to have such a mark.

    Despite the loss in overtime, the Philadelphia Flyers would score four goals in the span of 6:04 to tie the game against the Lightning.  Philadelphia also became the ninth club to score four goals in the final 10 minutes of the contest to tie a game.

    Buffalo 3, MINNESOTA 2

    The Buffalo Sabres would go on to defeat the Minnesota Wild and with the win, the Sabres now have 26 points in their last 2mi0 contests and the second best 20 game start since the overtime point era started.

    OTTAWA 6, Pittsburgh 4

    Ottawa Senators Mark Stone had a game with two goals on four shots to help lift the Ottawa Senators past the Pittsburgh Steelers with a 6-4 win.

    Matt Duchene would also reach the 500 point mark with a two goal, one assist performance in the win as well.

    NY RANGERS 4, Florida 2

    New York Rangers Filip Chytil became the only teenager in the long-history of the NY Rangers to score in three straight games in the win over the Florida Panthers yesterday.

    Columbus Blue Jackets Cam Atkinson registered the fifth career hat trick in Blue Jackets history with the rout of the Carolina Hurricanes last night.

    Elias Pettersson scored to be the third player in Vancouver Canucks history to register 11 goals in 16 games in the Canucks 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens yesterday.

    Montreal Canadiens Max Domi became the tenth player to have a nine game point scoring streak in their first season with the franchise.

    Los Angeles Kings Dion Phaneuf became the seventh player this season to play in his 1,00th NHL game in the Kings 5-3 loss to the Nashville Predators last night.

    San jose Sharks D Erik Karlsson scored his first goal as a member of the franchise and helped shutout the St. Louis Blues 4-0.

    Joe Pavelski would also score in the contest and this would also be his fourth consecutive game with a goal.

    The lone NWHL contest of yesterday pitted the Boston Pride against the Buffalo Beauts.

     

    Boston’s Jillian Dempsey and Gigi Marvin would both score twice to give the Pride a big win over the Buffalo Beauts at Warrior Ice Arena last night.

     

    Dempsey scored her goals in the first period and then sealed the win for the Pride with her second goal of the contest with 6:40 left in the third period.

     

    The Boston Pride would play strong defensively in this contest, giving up Buffalo’s lone goal at the 7:40 mark in the second.  Hayley Scamurra would get the goal for Buffalo.

     

    Hayley Scamurra has four goals and four assists on the season.

     

    Pride G Katie Burt registered 25 saves on 26 shots and Beauts G Nicole Hensley would have 22 saves on 26 shot attempts.

     

    With the win, Boston is now in second place in the NWHL standings at 3-1 with the Minnesota Whitecaps at 6-0, who return to NWHL action in two weeks.

     

    The Buffalo Beauts now sit at 2-3-0 in the standings, good for third place.  The Metropolitan Riveters are at 1-5-0 and rounding out the standings is the winless Connecticut Whale at 0-3-0.

     

    The Boston Pride and Buffalo Beauts will face off again at 2:30pm today at Warrior Ice Arena.
