NWHL Game Recap – 10/5/2019 – Boston Pride v. Metropolitan Riveters

    Boston Pride (0-0-0 0pts) v. Metropolitan Riveters (0-0-0 0pts)

    Game Recap:

The Metropolitan Riveters kick off their 2019-20 NWHL season as they host the Boston Pride in their home opener. The Riveters would start out by getting a few shots, but nothing difficult for rookie goaltender Lovisa Selander. Then Cassie Dunne would be called for tripping to give the Pride their first powerplay opportunity, and while they would not score, the Pride would use it to turn the tide and put the momentum on their side. The Pride would take it to the Riveters but Sam Walther was up to the task. However, late in the first period Jillian Dempsey would get one past Walther to give the Pride a late 1-0 lead to go into the first intermission with.

In the second period the Riveters would play with some more hustle in their game, and it would almost pay off early in the period as Bulbul Kartanbay would almost get the puck past Selander but a little puck luck was on the goalie’s side. However, that would not deter the Riveters as Kendall Cornine would score moments later to tie the game at one a piece. The Pride would force another penalty against the Riveters, but would be unsuccessful for a third consecutive time.

In the third period it would be a penalty filled affair as the Riveters would have two 5 on 3 powerplay opportunities while the Pride would only have one of their own. The Riveters would convert on the back end of their first two woman advantage as Madison Packer would tip in a Colleen Murphy point blast to take the 2-1 lead. However, the Riveters would begin to falter and the Pride would pounce as they would get goals from Tori Sullivan, Dempsey (her second of the game), and McKenna Brand to lead the Pride to a 4-2 victory to start their season.

Today in the NWHL there were several announcements made by the league.

Starting with the first announcement and that is that in addition to the Twitch Broadcasts for the 2019-20 season the Goalie Guild, lead by owner Justin Goldman and popular writer Cat Silverman, will be providing goaltending analysis during select games this season on Twitch.

There are plans that will see this initiative also feature a weekly goalie specific stream which will see The Goalie Guild break down the top saves from around the league and participate in Q&A sessions with the NWHL fans.

The New York based company will be bringing their expertise to help the NWHL deliver world class fan experiences to professional women’s hockey. Girsch Sports will be supporting activities for the league and all five NWHL teams with their primary focus being on technology, sponsorships, and game presentation.

The NWHL also announced that Kelly Cooke will be returning for her fourth season as Ditrector of the NWHL Player Safety Committee.

Cooke, a member of the inaugural Isobel Cup winning Boston Pride, will be joined by by NCAA and USA Hockey official Alicia Hanrahan, 2014 US Olympian Josephine Pucci, ECHL VP of Hockey Operations Joe Ernst, and longtime women’s hockey coach Bobby Jay. The NWHL Player Safety Committee has the ability to suspend players and issue warnings.

Lastly it was announced that the Metropolitan Riveters have named their leadership group for the 2019-20 season.

    Riveters Leaders

The Riveters have named original NWHLer and Riveter Madison Packer as captain with Rebecca Morse and Cailey Hutchison as her assistant captains this season. Packer, a three time all star and 2018 Isobel Cup Champion with the Riveters, enters this season as the team’s all time leader in goals and points.

  • NWHL News and Notes – September 25th, 2019

NWHL News and Notes – September 25th, 2019

Today in the NWHL it was announced that Madison Packer of the Metropolitan Riveters will be working with the Kyle Pavone Foundation (KPF).

Packer, an original NWHLer and Riveter, will be promoting the foundation at all home games this season in honor of her childhood friend Kyle Pavone who passed away on August 25th, 2018 from an accidental overdose.

    Riveters

Kyle and Madison were both raised on the same block in the Detroit suburbs. Pavone was also the former frontman of the band We Came as Romans.

At all home games this season Packer will be wearing a KPF cap as she lines up with her team for pre-game introductions to the crowd, and will also have KPF caps available at all Riveters post game meet and greets with the fans and will sign the caps for any fans who purchase them for a a donation of $20.

All proceeds of the caps sales will go directly to the foundation, and Packer will make an additional, personal contribution.

“Kyle Pavone was an avid hockey fan, and we grew up down the street from one another, often playing street hockey, toilet papering each other’s houses with friends or siblings, and running around the neighborhood causing harmless havoc. It is important to remember Kyle for the legacy he left, the lives he touched and the music he created. It is also vital that we pay attention to the work his family
is doing in the creation of this foundation, and the message behind it.

Overdose is currently the leading cause of death in America for people under 50. It is hard to have the uncomfortable conversations, but it is harder to see a family and community endure the loss. Mental health is important. Substance abuse education is important. They are separate categories that often work hand-in-hand. I have lost a lot of people I love, and watched a lot of people I care about lose someone they love to substance abuse or suicide. Given the statistics, I know I am not alone. This season I am teaming up with the Kyle Pavone Foundation to drive awareness in a much-
needed category, to raise funds to provide resources, and to start a conversation so we can begin to turn the tide. It takes a village to enact change. Join me this season in supporting the Kyle Pavone Foundation, and in standing as an ally for those struggling. To anyone out there who feels lost: you are loved, you are needed, and you matter.”

    — Madison Packer

Chicago’s goalscorers would be Patrick Kane with his 24th goal on the season, Alex DeBrincat with his 20th goal of the season and Brandon Saad would score on the power play late in the third period with his 12th goal of the season, however that would not be enough as the Blackhawks would fall 4-3.

    In NHL News…

Yesterday the NHL announced the Three Stars of the Week (week ending January 6th)

The first star went to Calgary Flames Johnny Gaudreau, who had an 11 point week in four games played.  Included was a back-to-back four-point performance which had not happened for a Flames player since Doug Gilmour back in November of 1988.

The second star of the week went to San Jose Sharks Brent Burns.  Burns had a nine-point week across three multi-point outings over the weeks and leads the NHL among all defenceman for points with 47 points in 43 games played.

The third star of the week would go to New York Islanders goaltender Robin Lehner.  Lehner would go 3-0-0 during the week and has a record of 7-0-0 since December 18th.  Lehner would become the fourth different Islanders goaltender to have a personal win streak of at least seven games and is the first the 2014-15 season when Jaroslav Halak had a similar mark.

    NWHL

This week the NWHL announced co-players of the week.  Buffalo Beauts goaltender Shannon Szabados and Metropolitan Riveters Madison Packer were named the VEDA Co-Players of the Week.

Szabados had a 30 save performance in the Beauts 5-0 shutout win over the Boston Pride on Saturday.  That contest was scoreless for the first 25 minutes until Buffalo opened up the scoring.  Szabados would also go on to have miraculous saves in the contest.

Packer, in Sunday’s contest against the Connecticut Whale, had one goal and three assists to close out the regular-season series between the Riveters and Whale.  The Riveters had a six-goal outburst in the contest to give Metropolitan a 6-3 win.  Packer, a four-year veteran of the NWHL, led the league in goals last season and she will be playing in the NWHL All-Star Game next month in Nashville.
