NHL Playoffs 2019: Rd 1 Game 4: Isles Complete The Sweep

The Pittsburgh Penguins squared off once again in Pittsburgh for Game 4 of the series. The Pens, looking to get the win, to try and extend the series one more game. While the Islanders just needed one more win to complete the sweep.

In the first period, the Pittsburgh Penguins came out flying, as expected. They would get a goal not even a minute into the game. An early goal coming from Jake Guentzel beating Lehner top blocker. It would be the first goal of the series for Guentzel.

Seemingly gathering the early momentum, the Penguins would look to capitalize on early chances, but the Islanders would answer back, scoring on a beautiful 2 on 1. The goal coming from man on fire Jordan Eberle, scoring his fourth of the series.

Before the end of the period, the Islanders would add a second goal. This time coming from Brock Nelson. A beautiful chip play in front of the crease, beating Matt Murray upstairs. The goal was Nelson’s third of the series.

In the second period, there was great back and forth chances, but the only big action to note of, in the period, was an altercation between Penguins forward Patrick Hornqvist and Islanders goalie Robin Lehner. A scrum that saw the Islanders go on the power play after the dust had settled, which they failed to capitalize on.

In the third period, it was more of the same. A lot of great back and forth action, which saw both goalies make some incredible saves. Pittsburgh would get a wonderful opportunity to tie the game up while on the power play, a shot from Phil Kessel was saved off the line by Isles defensive Scott Mayfield. The icing on the cake though was the empty net goal that was scored by Josh Bailey, after a great defensive faceoff win by Valtteri Filppula.

It should be pointed out that this is the second year in a row that Islanders Head Coach Barry Trotz led his team to victory against the Penguins in the playoffs. Last year, he did it with the Washington Capitals in the second round.

The Yes Movement will be moving on to the second round, where they will be waiting for the winner of the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes series.

Game Recap – 3/1/2019 – Washington Capitals v. New York Islanders

    Washington Capitals (36-21-7 79pts) v. New York Islanders (37-19-7 81pts)

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals head to Nassau Coliseum for the first time to take on the New York Islanders, and it would be the Islanders that would get on the board early as Tom Kuhnhackl would score in the opening minutes of the game on a very casual breakaway due to a blown offside by the officials. Then Alex Ovechkin would take a very blatant interference penalty, but the Capitals would kill the penalty off.

A very uneventful second period outside of a Brett Connolly penalty, and some heavy hits on both ends of the ice.

Unlike the second period, the third period would be fast and hectic in the first half of the period. The Capitals would strike early as Jakub Vrana would battle in front of the net and knock in the rebound to tie the game at one, then right away on the powerplay it would be Alex Ovechkin batting the puck and getting a lucky bounce to get his 45th of the season and give the Capitals a 2-1 lead. This would be followed with 3 penalties that would start with a Capitals powerplay, and then end in a Capitals powerplay. Then to ice the game for the Capitals, with Thomas Griess pulled TJ Oshie would clear the puck out of the zone and without paying attention Josh Bailey accidentally shot the puck into his own net to give the Capitals a 3-1 victory.

    New York Islanders (27-15-4 58pts) v. Washington Capitals (27-14-5 59pts)

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals , who are looking to end their three game losing streak, did not start well when Nicklas Backstrom would take a hooking penalty 10 seconds into the game. However the Capitals would kill the New York Islanders first opportunity. Then after some back and forth, Tom Wilson would draw a tripping call to give the Capitals their first powerplay opportunity, which had some good looks, but could not convert. Both teams would generate some good chances, but both Braden Holtby and Thomas Greiss would stand tall in net.

To start the period, the Capitals would draw a penalty 57 seconds into the second period, however, they would not generate much with the opportunity. After a lot of back and forth, Nic Dowd would take a late tripping penalty, but with some key blocks by Brooks Orpik the Capitals were able to kill the penalty.

The Capitals would start the period rocky as they had trouble maintaining the puck, and turnovers were a plenty. As a result Josh Bailey would tip in a Mathew Barzal point shot to get the Islanders the first goal of the game. Then not that long after, Cal Clutterbuck would score to make it 2-0 for the Islanders while on a 2 on 0 break. The Capitals, however, would never recover and drop their fourth straight game, and falling in the Metropolitan Division standings.
