Capitals News – Roster Moves and Other Notes

Today the Washington Capitals announced some waiver news, as well as some injury news in regards to the roster.

    Roster Moves

First the Capitals announced that Christian Djoos, Liam O’Brien, and Michael Sgarbossa have cleared waivers and have been loaned to the Hershey Bears of the AHL.

This move comes as no surprise as the Capitals needed to get down to 23 on their roster, and these going to Hershey was always the plan.

Next the Capitals announced that defenseman Michal Kempny has been placed on Injured Non Roster.

The move brings the Capitals to 23 for their roster, including the Evegny Kuznetsov three game suspension to start the season, and per the Capitals release Kempny can be activated when healthy and that there is no minimum game threshold for how long Kempny can be on the Injured Non Roster.

What does this really mean? With Kuznetsov’s suspension and Kempny’s injury the Capitals have the cap space until after their game against Carolina on Saturday, and will then need to make some more moves before they can play their next game on Tuesday, October 8th against Dallas top make sure they are under the cap.

    Capitals News

In other news for the Capitals, they have announced that John Carlson has been named alternate captain.

Carlson ranks third among active Capitals players in games played, and is taking over for Brooks Orpik who retired this past summer.

    NHL News

In NHL news the League has announced that San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane has been suspended for the first three games of the season in accordance to Rule 40.4 (Physical Abuse of Officials).

Under the terms of the CBA, and based on Kane’s average annual salary, Kane will forfeit $112,903.23. The money will be going to the Player’s Emergency Assistance Fund.

Game Recap- Round 2 – Game 2: Colorado Avalanche v.s San Jose Sharks

    Game Recap:

Tonight resumes play of this best of 7 series between the Colorado Avalanche & San Jose Sharks. The Sharks previously won game one on Friday night by a score of 5-2 to take an early 1-0 series lead. In the first. San Jose would get on the scoreboard first as Evander Kane would put in the rebound off a Brent Burns shot from the point in front of the net. That would be the only goal for the first period. San Jose Sharks will take a 1-0 lead after the first period.

In the second period, the Avalanche score twice to take the lead. The Avs first goal came off of a deflection by Gabriel Landeskog on a shot from the point by Tyson Barrie. Colorado’s second goal came from Tyson Barrie as he skated towards the right circle and blasted it past Sharks Goalie Martin Jones. At the end of two periods, the Colorado Avalanche would take a 2-1 leading going into the third period.

Colorado would add onto their lead in the third period. Matt Nieto added his third goal of the playoffs. Nieto put the puck in the back of the net on his backhand on a very gritty type of effort. However, San Jose would get back to within one goal as Brent Burns lifted the puck over Avalanche goalie Phillip Grubauer’s glove hand. The Avalanche would add an empty net goal by Nathan MacKinnon. Except, San Jose got back within one on a Power Play goal by Brent Burns with ten seconds left in the game. Unfortunately, it was too late for the Sharks to tie the game up. Colorado would go onto win 4-3. The Avalanche evened up the series with the Sharks at one game a piece going into game three.

Game Recap – 1/22/2019 – San Jose Sharks v. Washington Capitals

    San Jose Sharks (28-16-7 63pts) v. Washington Capitals (27-16-5 59pts)

    Game Recap:

The San Jose Sharks would strike quickly to get the 1-0 lead over the Washington Capitals twelve seconds into the game. After that the Sharks would generate a few more opportunities in the Capitals zone, but it would be a rush into the Sharks zone that would see Tim Heed get called for hooking. The Capitals would only need 13 seconds of powerplay time as Alex Ovechkin would score to tie the game. The less than two minutes later, Chandler Stephenson would gain possession of the puck in the neutral zone, and then feed the puck to Andre Burakovsky who would roof it to give the Capitals a 2-1 lead. However, TJ Oshie would be called for tripping resulting in a powerplay for the Sharks, and just like the Capitals powerplay, the Sharks didn’t need a lot of time for Tomas Hertl to score and tie the game at two a piece. But the Capitals would respond as Ovechkin would steal the puck and get into the zone to pass it to Oshie to give the Capitals a 3-2 lead on a shot that had to be fought to be put in.

The Capitals would start the period short handed, but would kill the penalty. However, the Sharks would get on the board with Evander Kane’s 20th of the season. But two minutes later Evgeny Kuznetsov would score in a scramble around the Sharks net to regain the lead. Then it would be Ovechkin again as he would net his second of the game to give the Capitals a 5-3 lead after killing off a Lars Eller delay of game penalty. However, the Capitals would not enter the second intermission with their 2 goal lead intact as a 3 on 0 odd man rush would give Logan Couture the opportunity to score and shrink the Capitals lead to 1.

The third period would show both teams trading some powerplay opportunities, but it would be Ovechkin with the hat trick to regain the Capitals two goal lead. However, on a John Carlson holding penalty, Tomas Hertl would score his second of the game to keep the Sharks in this game. Then with one second left and with the goalie pulled, Evander Kane would score his second of the game with one second left on the clock to send this game to overtime.

To start overtime the Capitals would be buzzing with the opening trio of John Carlson, Tom Wilson, and Evgeny Kuznetsov, but it would not be enough as Tomas Hertl would score his third of the game to win this game for the Sharks and giving their 6th straight loss.
