Capitals Recall Djoos, Send Down Lewington

The Washington Capitals have announced that they have recalled defenseman Christian Djoos, and have re-assigned defenseman Tyler Lewington to Hershey of the AHL.

The move allows the Capitals to have a more seasoned veteran in Djoos to be the seventh defenseman for the Capitals. The Capitals top six is pretty set, though an appearance in the lineup would not be out of the question for Djoos if the brass feels a slight change is necessary.

Capitals News – Roster Moves and Other Notes

Today the Washington Capitals announced some waiver news, as well as some injury news in regards to the roster.

    Roster Moves

First the Capitals announced that Christian Djoos, Liam O’Brien, and Michael Sgarbossa have cleared waivers and have been loaned to the Hershey Bears of the AHL.

This move comes as no surprise as the Capitals needed to get down to 23 on their roster, and these going to Hershey was always the plan.

Next the Capitals announced that defenseman Michal Kempny has been placed on Injured Non Roster.

The move brings the Capitals to 23 for their roster, including the Evegny Kuznetsov three game suspension to start the season, and per the Capitals release Kempny can be activated when healthy and that there is no minimum game threshold for how long Kempny can be on the Injured Non Roster.

What does this really mean? With Kuznetsov’s suspension and Kempny’s injury the Capitals have the cap space until after their game against Carolina on Saturday, and will then need to make some more moves before they can play their next game on Tuesday, October 8th against Dallas top make sure they are under the cap.

    Capitals News

In other news for the Capitals, they have announced that John Carlson has been named alternate captain.

Carlson ranks third among active Capitals players in games played, and is taking over for Brooks Orpik who retired this past summer.

    NHL News

In NHL news the League has announced that San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane has been suspended for the first three games of the season in accordance to Rule 40.4 (Physical Abuse of Officials).

Under the terms of the CBA, and based on Kane’s average annual salary, Kane will forfeit $112,903.23. The money will be going to the Player’s Emergency Assistance Fund.

    Capitals Announce More Roster Moves

Today the Washington Capitals have announced that they have placed three players on waivers and have loaned another to Hershey.

    Placed on Waivers

    #29 – Christian Djoos (D)

    #87 – Liam O’Brien (F)

    #23 – Michael Sgarbossa (F)

    Loaned to Hershey

    #63 – Shane Gersich (F)

With today’s moves the Capitals did what was originally predicted by us in regards to Christian Djoos after he was awarded $1.25mil in arbitration, and with the Capitals $1.3mil over the salary cap a big contract or two needed to be moved. Both Michael Sgarbossa and Liam O’Brien were not expected to make the Opening Night roster, but could be call ups later this season if injuries occur.

The Capitals are now carrying 14 forwards, 8 defensemen, and three goaltenders. Capitals will need to have their Opening Night roster submitted by Tuesday, October 1st by 5p ET.

  • The Capitals Salary Crunch – A Case to Send Down Copley

The Capitals Salary Crunch – A Case to Send Down Copley

With NHL Training Camp in full swing, and the Washington Capitals having played through half of their preseason games to this point, there still is a looming question that the Capitals will need to answer and that involves the $1.3 million in salary they need to shed to get under the Salary Cap. So how should the Capitals go about doing this, and what are some trends we are seeing currently around the NHL that could give the Capitals the ability make such moves without having to do a trade or two to make it happen?

So to recap real quick, through arbitration defenseman Christian Djoos was awarded a one year $1.25mil contract, and forward Chandler Stephenson was awarded a one year $1.05mil contract. The two contracts combined put the Capitals $1.3mil over the salary cap going into training camp. However, the Capitals will get minor relief for the first three games of the regular season as suspended forward Evgeny Kuznetsov’s cap hit will come off the books for the duration of his three game suspension. However, that will not help the Capitals in the long term, but a recent trend we have seen these last few days may help give the Capitals that long term solution. Waivers.

In the last few days goalies Louis Domingue (TB), Mike Condon (TB), Garret Sparks (VGK), Oscar Dansk (VGK), Alex Lyon (PHI), and a few other NHL back up caliber goaltenders have been placed on waivers with the purpose of assignment. Some because teams are already in good shape with their goaltending, while others like Tampa Bay are doing it to help with the salary cap.

Domingue is a cap hit of $1.15mil this season and Tampa Bay is still looking to re-sign restricted free agent forward Brayden Point, so the cap pressure is there for them. Sending Domingue down to the minors provides some of that relief.

So what does this mean for the Capitals you are asking. Simple. The Capitals send Pheonix Copley down to Hershey. Now while Copley will need to go through waivers to be sent down to Hershey, and that leads the risk of someone claiming him, but that is not a bad thing because let’s say Copley does clear, and based off of what we have seen thus far all players are clearing at this time, then that means we can have Vitek Vanecek as Braden Holtby’s backup. Plus Vanecek and Ilya Samsonov are both waiver exempt this season so if the Capitals chose to they can have them rotate throughout the season so they both would be guaranteed playing time. Also with moving Copley that would free up $1.1mil in cap space for the Capitals.

However that only gives the Capitals a little bit of relief as I would predict at least two more moves will need to be made, and they should come in the form of Chandler Stephenson being placed on waivers and keeping Shane Gersich, who is waiver exempt this season, and also Christian Djoos being placed on waivers and keeping either Tyler Lewington, who is not waiver exempt, or Colby Williams, who is waiver exempt.

So here is a breakdown for those keeping track of the moves we would make.

    Placed on Waivers for Assignment:

    G – Pheonix Copley — $1.1mil

    F – Chandler Stephenson — $1.05mil

    D – Christian Djoos — $1.25mil

Total Cap Space Cleared — $3.4mil

Actual Cap Space Available — $2.1mil

    Players to Keep on Roster:

    G – Vitek Vanecek — $716,667

    F – Shane Gersich — $700k

    D – Tyler Lewington — $675k

    Cap Space Used — $2,091,667

    Cap Space Available — $8,333

With this breakdown you can see that it’ll get the Capitals under the cap, but may still need to make another pair of moves to make themselves comfortable under the salary cap. The clock is ticking and only time will tell as to what the Capitals will do.

  • TXHT Opinion – The Capitals Salary Cap Crunch

TXHT Opinion – The Capitals Salary Cap Crunch

With July coming to an end the Washington Capitals have made some moves to improve their bottom six and their defense. However, with these moves and the re-signings of forwards Jakub Vrana and Chandler Stephenson, and defenseman Christian Djoos the Capitals have put themselves into a bit of a Cap crunch.

Currently the Capitals stand with $1.3mil over the Salary Cap, which is fine for now as teams are allowed to be 10% over the Cap up until the start of the regular season. Obviously with the arbitration cases of Djoos and Stephenson the end results were a little higher than some expected and rightfully so. Djoos was awarded a one year $1.25mil contract, while Stephenson got a one year $1.05mil contract. I’m no math wizard, but I see where we have our $1.3mil Cap issue.

Now hear me out here because this may get complicated, but last I checked both Djoos and Stephenson did not get a lot of playing time as the season came near an end and the playoffs wore on. Now many will bring up the fact that Djoos was injured for a good amount of the regular season, but yet once he was back in the lineup, specifically in the playoffs, Djoos couldn’t get more than seven minutes a game. Another thing that didn’t help Djoos’ case was that Jonas Siegenthaler played Djoos out of th lineup. Once Siegenthaler replaced Djoos in the lineup in the first round against Carolina, Siegenthaler played more minutes in one game than what Djoos averaged in the playoffs as a whole. So to me, unless Djoos has a stellar training camp, Siegenthaler is your sixth defenseman this upcoming season and Djoos is expendable now.

Now for Stephenson, to me he became expendable when Travis Boyd started getting more playing time. Stephenson this past season also didn’t exceed in his sophmore year like he did in his rookie campaign where he was an integral part to the Capitals winning the Stanley Cup. With the Capitals signing Garnet Hathaway, Richard Panik, and Brendan Leipsic this pushes both Stephenson and Boyd out of the equation.

So how would I fix this? Great question. First thing I’d do is clear out the $1.3mil in Cap space that is putting us over the Cap, and how I would do that is by trading both Djoos and Stephenson for draft picks. Yes, draft picks. You can never have too many draft picks. So with those two trades you clear out the $1.3mil, next thing I would do is send down Travis Boyd via waivers and call up Shane Gersich who is a lesser Cap hit by $100k. Now here is where it gets tricky for the Capitals. Who would be the seventh defenseman once Djoos has been traded? I’ve heard Tyler Lewington’s name thrown around and being how he has a cheap Cap hit, it would work, however, there is still no wiggle room which means the Capitals are going to need to make another trade and give a young guy a spot. Particularly on offense. Who would I trade? I honestly don’t know, and that’s why I’m not the general manager.

One thing is for sure, Brian MacLellan is working the phones and is looking to get his team under the Cap and with some wiggle room to do call ups in case of an injury. It will be an interesting time leading up to training camp in September, and will be very interesting to see what moves MacLellan will make in that time.
