NWHL Game Recap – 10/5/2019 – Boston Pride v. Metropolitan Riveters

    Boston Pride (0-0-0 0pts) v. Metropolitan Riveters (0-0-0 0pts)

    Game Recap:

The Metropolitan Riveters kick off their 2019-20 NWHL season as they host the Boston Pride in their home opener. The Riveters would start out by getting a few shots, but nothing difficult for rookie goaltender Lovisa Selander. Then Cassie Dunne would be called for tripping to give the Pride their first powerplay opportunity, and while they would not score, the Pride would use it to turn the tide and put the momentum on their side. The Pride would take it to the Riveters but Sam Walther was up to the task. However, late in the first period Jillian Dempsey would get one past Walther to give the Pride a late 1-0 lead to go into the first intermission with.

In the second period the Riveters would play with some more hustle in their game, and it would almost pay off early in the period as Bulbul Kartanbay would almost get the puck past Selander but a little puck luck was on the goalie’s side. However, that would not deter the Riveters as Kendall Cornine would score moments later to tie the game at one a piece. The Pride would force another penalty against the Riveters, but would be unsuccessful for a third consecutive time.

In the third period it would be a penalty filled affair as the Riveters would have two 5 on 3 powerplay opportunities while the Pride would only have one of their own. The Riveters would convert on the back end of their first two woman advantage as Madison Packer would tip in a Colleen Murphy point blast to take the 2-1 lead. However, the Riveters would begin to falter and the Pride would pounce as they would get goals from Tori Sullivan, Dempsey (her second of the game), and McKenna Brand to lead the Pride to a 4-2 victory to start their season.

NWHL News and Notes – August 16th, 2019

Today in the NWHL we had three more signings as we prepare for the 2019-20 season.

First up we have the Boston Pride signing defender Whitney Renn to a one year deal.

Renn, 23, will be playing in her first season with the Pride and in the NWHL after playing in 131 games for RPI from 2014-18, and playing last season for the EWHL DEC Salzburg Eagles.

Then the Buffalo Beauts would add some international flavor to their team as they would sign Iveta Klimášová to a one year deal.

Klimášová, a defender, has been a fixture of the Slovakia Women’s National Team since 2014. In the 60 EWHL games with SKP Bratislava Klimášová would record 28 goals and 16 assists for 44 points. This will be Klimášová’s first season in the NWHL and with the Beauts.

Then from Kazakhstan, the Metropolitan Riveters have signed forward Bulbul Kartanbay to a one year deal.

Kartanbay, who has been passionately pursuing playing professionally in North America,  achieved her dream and will be part of the Riveters for the 2019-20 season. Kartanbay has been a fixture of the Kazakhstan National Team since she was a teenager, and has been at the forefront of the growth of Women’s hockey in Kazakhstan.

All players will partake in the 50 percent cut of revenue from league sponsorship and media deals. Plus they will also receive 15 percent of revenue from apparel sold with their name on it.

Lastly, TXHT would like to congratulate NWHLPA Director Anya Battaglino and Metropolitan Riveters forward Madison Packer on their wedding that took place today Friday, August 16th, 2019. We would like to wish you both years of shared happiness and to many great memories you will create together.

TXHT will continue to provide NWHL coverage as more signings are announced.
