    2022-23 Preview

Last year the Predators made the playoffs and lost in the first round to the eventual Stanley Cup champions in the Colorado Avalanche. Nashville is hoping to build off a solid season and look to advance further in the playoffs. Unfortunately for them, they’re in a very loaded and stacked Western Conference. This team features strong performers in Filip Forsberg who’s a scoring dynamo, Roman Josi who anchors the defense both offensively and defensively, and Jusi Saros in between the pipes who had a phenomenal season last year.

I do see Nashville making the playoffs but, I think they’ll continue to struggle to get past the first round unless they can get more scoring firepower up front on the wing and some more speed as well. What the Predators have now is solid and good, unfortunately it’s not enough to be a Stanley Cup contender.

    2022-23 Preview

In one of the worst seasons in the longtime storied franchises, the Montreal Canadiens look to improve from the 22 win campaign from last season.

To start off, there was a lot of optimism as Montreal was fresh off of their first appearance in the Stanley Cup Final since 1993. However, injuries mounted with the Habs and things never got any better. Dominique Ducharme, who signed an extension just after the Stanley Cup Final, was relieved of his duties in February, after only being head coach for seven months, and Martin St. Louis was named the interim head coach. Offencive production was down under Ducharme but when St. Louis came in, that production improved but by that point, it was too late and the Habs front office would start planning for the offseason.

This will be another season for rebuilding. Montreal should be better when it comes to the top six as well as with the blue line. The big question mark for the Canadiens and their fans remains. What will happen with G Carey Price? It has been rumoured that Price may very well miss the 2022-23 season with ongoing knee issues that lingered through the end of last season. Is Jake Allen read to take the reins for another season or will Sam Montembeault be the starter in net?

On the offensive side of the puck, newcomer Kirby Dach, who at the time of the writing of this, has not signed a new deal, should provide excellent offencive skills. Will this be the year that Cole Caufield finally breaks through and has top six minutes?

On the defencive side, the defence will look much different. The biggest question mark here is will the blue line be able to gel together and not have a lot issues or will the defence be a question once more?

    2022-23 Preview

With most of the team returning, will the Minnesota Wild advance deep into the Stanley Cup playoffs this season? That is the question on a lot of the minds for the Wild.

This is a team that set a franchise record for points (113) and wins (53) and that was propelled by Kirill Kaprizov scoring 47 goals and had 61 assists in 81 games played.

The Wild have not advanced past the first round in the postseason since 2015 and in order for the Wild to advance in the postseason, everything needs to be clicking on all cylinders. The loss of Kevin Fiala is going slightly sting on the offencive side of the puck but there should be some optimism with some the moves that were made.

The big question between the pipes is the durability of Marc-Andre Fleury. He will enter his first full season as the starting netminder after signing a two-year deal and with Cam Talbot now out of the picture after being traded to Ottawa, there could be a lot of weight on Fleury’s shoulders to get the Wild to their first Stanley Cup final appearance.

In 2021-22 the Los Angeles Kings took strong strides forward as they returned to the playoffs after missing them the last few seasons. This year they will look to their veterans to continue to lead, and for their youngsters to take that next step in their development. Jonathan Quick had a revitalizing season to his career last season, and Cal Peterson will play second fiddle to Quick. However, one must ask if this was a flash in the pan season for Quick or if he is really back to being the netminder who was unbeatable in the 2010’s.

Before free agency began the Kings made a huge splash in acquiring forward Kevin Fiala from Minnesota, and he will be looked upon to add some scoring to the Kings lineup. The Kings also look forward to the continued growth of Quinton Byfield will something to watch as he has the tools to be a future star and face of the franchise. The Kings look to be a potential playoff team again this season.

After having one of the best seasons in franchise history, the Florida Panthers will look to build upon that success as they look to elevate their game to become considered one of the elite teams in the NHL. They will be doing so though with a new voice behind the bench as Paul Maurice takes over after stepping down in Winnipeg mid last season. Maurice will also become the third coach behind the bench in the past year for the Panthers.

Also coming to the Panthers is forward Matthew Tkachuk who came to Florida in a big blockbuster trade with Calgary that saw both Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar go to the Flames. It’ll be interesting to see how that’ll impact the Panthers especially since they lost additional key players like Claude Giroux, Mason Marchment, and Ben Chiarot. Anthony Duclair will also be missing time due to injury.

This will be a big season for the Panthers as they look to take that next step forward.

    2022-23 Preview

Going into the 2022-23 season the Edmonton Oilers are going to look to see if they can replicate last season’s success that saw them get to the Western Conference Final for the first time with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. However, they’re going to have to do it without veterans Duncan Keith (retired), Mike Smith (injury), or Zach Kassian (traded). With the loss of Keith and Kassian they lose some of their grit, and with Keith especially, leadership and experience. Smith being injured left a massive hole in net, and with Mikko Koskinen heading back to Europe the Oilers needed to get some security in between the pipes. Enter Jack Campbell who will be looked to be the number one guy while Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard will vie to be Campbell’s backup.

The Oilers will be a playoff contender once again, but the big question will be in net and if Campbell is the real deal and worth the money they spent on him during the offseason. The Oilers have a legitimate chance of making it to the Stanley Cup Final this season.

    2022-23 Preview

Detroit looks to be more competitive this season, after missing the postseason for the sixth straight season. However the biggest questions remain. Will the Red Wings be better statistically across all marks after being at or near the bottom from last season?

The team has a new look behind the bench in Derek Lalonde, the former Tampa Bay Lightning assistant, who was a part of the back-to-back Stanley Cup winning coaching staff, and the Red Wings acquired as well as signed key pieces that should bring the Red Wings closer to playoff contention instead of falling backwards. Detroit will look to clinch their first playoff appearance since the 2015-16 season, and provided that the key pieces all play their parts, the Red Wings should be able to achieve that goal.

For Dallas there is a new regime behind the bench after the surprise resigning of head coach Rick Bowness after the 2021-22 season had ended. In now is former Vegas head coach Pete Deboer who will look to bounce back himself after being ousted from Vegas, and guide the Stars deep into the playoffs.

The Stars didn’t due much tinkering to their lineup as they added more smaller pieces to the team instead of doing anything huge. this could either pay off for the Stars or back fire in their faces. One way or the other I see the Stars as a playoff bubble team, and only time will show us how they will fare during the 2022-23 season.

    2022-23 Preview

After a respectable season under first year head coach Brad Larsen, the Columbus Blue Jackets are looking to improve upon their below .500 2021-22 season. Coming into the 2022-23 season the Blue Jackets added grit on their blue line with the signing of Erik Gudbranson, and then won the free agent lottery when they signed Johnny Gaudreau to a seven year deal. With the addition of Johnny Hockey to Columbus the Jackets will look to increase their offensive production this season with a team that is still primarily intact, minus a couple moves.

In goal Elvis Merzlikins will look to continue his development as the start for the Jackets with Joonas Korpisalo in the backup role once again, but could Korpisalo be trade bait at the deadline this season if the Blue Jackets are not in the playoff picture? How the team continues to grow and develop will dictate that decision.

This season I do see the Blue Jackets making a push for the playoffs, but I’m interested in seeing how Gaudreau and Patrik Laine will mesh together.

    2022-23 Preview

After years of being unable to get past the second round with their core group, the Colorado Avalanche finally made it back to the promised land as they would be a dominant 16-4 in the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs to claim their third Cup in franchise history, and first under the Joe Sakic management regime. Going into the 2022-23 season the Avs will look to defend their title as Stanley Cup champions, and will be doing it with a fairly in tact lineup to do it.

On offense both Nazem Kadri and Andre Burakovsky would leave town for Calgary and Seattle respectively, while bottom six players Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Nico Sturm would also depart, but when looking at the Avs depth chart they are still loaded down the middle and on the wings. One positive on the wings is that there will be healthy competition amongst their prospects that will be looking to make it into the Avs lineup.

On defense journeymen Jack Johnson and Ryan Murray would leave, but the Avs were able to re-sign Josh Manson and still have a very strong young group led by Cale Makar that will be the backbone for the Avalanche for years to come. The only question will be in net for the Avs. Gone is Darcy Kuemper, who signed with Washington, and in come Alexander Georgiev from the New York Rangers. Georgiev is getting another opportunity to prove himself as a starting goaltender while Pavel Francouz will start as the backup, but could very well take over the starting spot too (after all, he did go 6-0 in the 2022 playoffs).

The Avs are going to be a team to beat once again, and will be fun to watch again this season.
