    • The St. Louis Blues announced that forwards Ryan O’Reilly and Vladimir Tarasenko have both been placed on IR.
      • O’Reilly will mis time due to a broken foot while Tarasenko will miss time due to an injured hand.

    • The NHL announced that Nashville Predators forward Filip Forsberg has been named First Star of the Week.
      • Erk Karlsson (SJ) and Antti Raanta (CAR) would round out the rest of the Three Stars.

    • The NHL announced that the 2024 NHL Winter Classic will take place at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, WA.

    • Pittsburgh Penguins v. Boston Bruins – 2p ET – 2023 NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park
      • At Fenway Park for the Winter Classic the Boston Bruins would play host to the Pittsburgh Penguins, and after a scoreless first period Kasperi Kapanen would score to give the Pens the 1-0 lead. Then in the third period Jake DeBrusk would score a pair of goals to give the Bruins the 2-1 victory over the Penguins.

    • Vegas Golden Knights v. Colorado Avalanche – 9p ET
      • In Denver, the Avalanche and Golden Knights face-off. In the first period, Colorado takes the 1-0 lead when Nathan MacKinnon scores his ninth of the year but then Vegas ties it up when Michael Amadio scores his sixth of the season. In the second, Nicolas Roy scores a pair of goals to give Vegas the 3-1 lead. In the third, the Avs Mikko Rantanen scores his 25th of the year but the Golden Knights escape the Mile High City with the 3-2 win over the Avalanche.
    • Philadelphia Flyers v. Anaheim Ducks – 10p ET
      • In Anaheim, the Ducks host the Flyers for the lone time this season. In the first, Philadelphia gets a pair of goals when Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost both score. In the second, Travis Konecny’s 19th of the year puts Philly up 3-0. In the third, Scott Laughton’s ninth of the year gives the Flyers the 4-0 lead but then Ryan Strome scores to get the Ducks on the board with 30 seconds left in the contest. However, the Flyers go on to defeat the Ducks 4-1.

    NHL Stars of the Week – Forsberg Highlights as First Star

    Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of December 27th through January 1st.

    First Star – Filip Forsberg (LW – NAS)

    • Filip Forsberg would record five goals and two assists for seven points in three games played for the Nashville Predators, and to start off the week Forsberg would score a goal in a 3-2 loss to Dallas on Dec. 27th. Then on Dec. 30th against Anaheim he would record a goal and two assists in a 6-1 victory, and to close up the week Forsberg would score his eighth career hat trick in a 5-4 overtime loss to Vegas on Dec. 31st.

    Second Star – Erik Karlsson (D – SJ)

    • Erik Karlsson would lead the NHL in assists with seven in four games played for the San Jose Sharks which would extend his assist/point streak to 13 games dating back to Dec. 3rd. To open the week Karlsson would record two assists in a 6-2 loss to Vancouver on Dec. 27th, and another two assists on in a 4-3 overtime loss to Philadelphia on Dec. 29th. Then on Dec. 31st he would record an assist in a 5-2 loss to Dallas, and to close out the week Karlsson would record two more assists in a 5-2 victory over Chicago on Jan. 1st. Karlsson’s point streak is the longest in San Jose Sharks franchise history.

    Third Star – Antti Raanta (G – CAR)

    • Antti Raanta would go a perfect 3-0-0 with a 1.30 goals against average and a .944 save percentage along with two shutouts for the Carolina Hurricanes. Raanta would open the week with a 24 save 3-0 shutout victory over Chicago on Dec. 27th. Then on Dec. 30th he would record a 19 save 4-0 shutout over Florida, and to close out the week Raanta would record 24 saves in a 5-4 shootout victory over New Jersey on Jan. 1st.

    • The NHL announced Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin as First Star for the Month of December.
      • Connor McDavid (EDM) and Tage Thompson (BUF) would round out the rest of the 3 Stars for the Month.

    • The Dallas Stars announced that they have signed forward Joe Pavelski to a one year extension.

    Game Recaps

    • Carolina Hurricanes v. New Jersey Devils – 3p ET
      • In New Jersey, the Devils host the Hurricanes. After a scorless first period, Derek Stepan gives Carolina the 1-0 lead but then Jack Hughes responds to tie the game for New Jersey. Sebastian Aho’s shorthanded goal then gives the Canes the 2-1 lead. In the third, New Jersey ties it up again when Jesper Bratt scores his 13th of the year but then Derek Stepan’s second of the contest puts Carolina up by a goal once again. Nico Hischier scores to tie it up the the Devs once more and then New Jersey finally breaks through with the lead wehn Jesper Bratt scores his second of the afternoon. Then, Martin Necas power play goal ties it up for the Hurricanes 4-4. In the shootout, Andrei Svechnikov scores the lone goal as the Hurricanes get the 5-4 win over the Devils.

    • New York Rangers v. Florida Panthers – 5p ET
      • In South Florida, the Panthers host the Rangers. In the first, New York takes the 1-0 lead when Mika Zibanejad scores a power play goal. In the second the Blueshirts take the 2-0 lead when Zibanejad scores his second of the afternoon and then Florida gets ono the board when Nick Cousins scores. Chris Kreider then strikes with his 17th of the year to but New York up by two but then Sam Bennett’s power play goal brings the Panthers within a goal. In the third, Vincent Trocheck’s power play goal gives New York the two goal lead once more but then Eric Staal strikes to cut the New York lead to a goal once again. Artemi Panarin then closes the door on the contest with his 10th of the year as the Rangers down the Panthers 5-3.

    • San Jose Sharks v. Chicago Blackhawks – 7p ET
      • In the Windy City, the Blackhawks look to harpoon the Sharks. After a scoreless first, Chicago gets a pair of goals when Patrick Kane and Sam Lafferty each get on the scoresheet. Then, Jonah Gadjovivh, Marc-Edouard Vlasic, and Alexander Barbanov all score to give San Jose the 3-2 lead. In the third, Timo Meier scores as San Jose takes the two goal lead over Chicago and then Evgeny Svechnikov closes the door on the night when he scores his fourth of the year and gives the Sharks the 5-2 win over the Blackhawks.

    • Buffalo Sabres v. Ottawa Senators – 7p ET
      • In Ottawa, the Senators host the Sabres. In the first, Tim Stützle scores just 47 seconds into the contest to give Ottawa the 1-0 lead. In the second, Buffalo’s Zemgus Girgensons scores his fourth of the year to get the Sabres on the board but then Jacobn Lucchini’s power play goal, his first NHL goal, puts the Sens up once more. In the third, Tim Stützle’s empty net goal, his second of the night, gives the Senators the 3-1 win over the Sabres.

    • New York Islanders v. Seattle Kraken – 8p ET
      • In the Emerald City, the Kraken host the Islanders for the lone time on the season. In the first, Adam Larsson’s fourth of the year gives Seattle the 1-0 lead but then Mathew Barzal’s ninth ties it up for the Isles. In the second, Eeli Tolvanen’s power play goal gives the Kraken the 2-1 lead and then Oliver Bjorkstrand scores his fifth of the year to put Seattle up by two. In the third, Brandon Tanev scores his seventh of the year as the Kraken strike down the Islanders for the 4-1 win.

    NHL 3 Stars of the Month – Ovechkin Earns Top Honor with Historic December

    Today the National Hockey League has announced the Stars of the Month for the month of December 2022.

    First Star – Alex Ovechkin (LW – WAS)

    • Alex Ovechkin would earn top honors after recording 13 goals and nine assists for 22 points in 15 games played. Ovechkin would record two hat tricks, with the first one getting him goal number 800 becoming the third individual in NHL history to accomplish the feat, and then the true highlight of the month would be Ovechkin surpassing Gordie Howe for second all time in goal scoring after recording goal number 802 on Dec. 23rd against the Winnipeg Jets.

    Second Star – Connor McDavid (C – EDM)

    • Connor McDavid would record 14 goals and 17 assists for 31 points in 15 games played for the Edmonton Oilers. McDavid would record eight multi-point games, and would have one five point game and three four point games. McDavid is the first Oiler since Wayne Gretzky (March 1988) to record a 30+ point month.

    Third Star – Tage Thompson (C – BUF)

    • Tage Thompson would record 13 goals and nine assists for 22 points in 11 games played for the Buffalo Sabres. Thompson would register points in nine of his 11 games played which would be highlighted by his five goal game against Columbus on Dec. 7th.

    Today the National Hockey League has announced the Rookie of the Month for the month of December 2022.

    Pyotr Kochetkov (G – CAR)

    • Pytor Kochetkov would go 7-0-1 with a 1.63 goals against average and .939 save percentage along with two shutouts for the Carolina Hurricanes in eight games played.
      • Kochetkov would edge out forwards Matias Maccelli (ARI), Mason McTavish (ANA), and Wyatt Johnston (DAL) as well as fellow netminders Stuart Skinner (EDM) and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (BUF) for the honor.
      • Kochetkov would allow two or fewer goals in seven of his eight games played.

    • The NHL announced that the 2023 NHL Heritage Classic will take place on Oct. 29th, 2023.
      • The Heritage Classic  will take place at the Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton.
      • The Oilers will host the Calgary Flames.
      • The game will mark the return to the site of the League’s first regular season outdoor game that took place on Nov. 22nd, 2003.

    Game Recaps

    • Buffalo Sabres v. Boston Bruins – 1p ET
      • In Boston for the first of many early afternoon matinees for New Year’s Eve the Bruins would play host to the Buffalo Sabres, and in the first period David Pastrnak would open the scoring for the B’s while Tage Thompson would score to tie the game at one for the Sabres. In the second period Alex Tuch would score to give the Sabres the lead. Then in the third period Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand would score to give the B’s the 3-2 lead, but a late Dylan cozens tally would tie the game at three for the Sabres to force overtime. In the extra frame Tuch would net his second of the game to give the Sabres the 4-3 victory over the Bruins.
    • Chicago Blackhawks v. Columbus Blue Jackets – 1p ET
      • In Columbus the Blue Jackets would play host to the Chicago Blackhawks, and in the first period Andreas Athanasiou would score for the Blackhawks, but Emil Bemstrom would score to tie the game at one for the Jackets. In the second period Gustav Nyquist and Kirill Marchenko would score to give the Jackets the 3-1 lead. Then in the third period Nyquist would score his second of the game to give the Blue Jackets the 4-1 victory over the Blackhawks.
    • Nashville Predators v. Vegas Golden Knights – 3p ET
      • In Vegas the Nashville Predators would look to dim the Golden Knights, and in the first period Keegan Kolesar would strike for the Knights, but goals from Filip Forsberg and Jeremy Lauzon would give the Preds the 2-1 lead. In the second period Michael Amadio and Reilly Smith would score to give the Knights the 3-2 lead. Then in the third period Chandler Stephenson would score for the Knights, but a pair of goals from Forsberg to complete the hat trick would tie the game at four for the Preds to force overtime. In the extra frame Nicolas Hague would strike to give the Golden Knights the 5-4 victory over the Predators.
    • Philadelphia Flyers v. Los Angeles Kings – 4p ET
      • In Hollywood the Philadelphia Flyers would continue their California trip as they would take on the Los Angeles Kings, and in the first period Scott Laughton would score for the Flyers, but goals from Adreian Kempe and Phillip Danault would give the Kings the 2-1 lead. In the second period Owen Tippett would score to tie the game at two for the Flyers. Then in the third period Noah Cates and Travis Konecny would score to give the Flyers the 4-2 victory over the Kings.
    • Montreal Canadiens v. Washington Capitals – 4p ET
      • In Washington the Capitals would end 2022 with a visit from the Montreal Canadiens, and in the first period Erik Gustafsson and Garnet Hathaway would score to give the Caps the 2-0 lead. In the second period Cole Caufield would net a pair of goals for the Habs, but goals from Nic Dowd, Alex Ovechkin, and Dylan Strome would give the Caps the 5-2 lead. Then in third period Marcus Johansson and Anthony Mantha would score and Ovechkin would net a pair to complete the hat trick to give the Capitals the 9-2 victory over the hapless Canadiens.
    • Arizona Coyotes v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 5p ET
      • In Tampa Bay the Lightning would play host to the Arizona Coyotes, and in the first period Travis Boyd and Christian Fischer would strike for the Yotes to take a 2-0 lead, but Brayden Point would score to get the Bolts on the board and back within one. In the second period Nick Bjugstad would score for the Yotes, but goals from Mikhail Sergachev, Steven Stamkos, and Alex Killorn would give the Bolts the 4-3 lead. Then in the third period Brandon Hagel would score to give the Lightning the 5-3 victory over the Coyotes.
    • Minnesota Wild v. St. Louis Blues – 6p ET
      • In St. Louis the Blues would take on the Minnesota Wild, and in the first period Calle Rosen would strike first for the Blues, but Matt Dumba would score to tie the game at one for the Wild. In the second period Robert Bortuzzo would score for the Blues, but a pair of goals from Ryan Hartman would give the Wild the 3-2 lead. Then in the third period Jared Spurgeon and Jordan Greenway would score to give the Wild the 5-2 victory over the Blues.
    • Toronto Maple Leafs v. Colorado Avalanche – 7p ET
      • In Colorado the Avalanche would play host to the Toronto Maple Leafs, and in the first period JT Compher would score for the Avs, but goals from Mitch Marner and Pierre Engvall would give the Leafs the 2-1 lead. In the second period Devon Toews would score for the Avs, but goals from Michael Bunting, Auston Matthews, and TJ Brodie would give the Leafs the 5-2 lead. Then in the third period Bunting would net his second of the game to give the Maple Leafs the 6-2 victory over Avalanche.
    • Ottawa Senators v. Detroit Red Wings – 7p ET
      • In Detroit the Red Wings would take on the Ottawa Senators, and in the first period Austin Watson and Claude Giroux would score to give the Sens the 2-0 lead. In the second period Pius Suter would score to get the Wings on the board and back within one. Then in the third period Lucas Raymond, Elmer Soderblom, and Michael Rasmussen would score to give the Red Wings the 4-2 victory over the Senators.
    • San Jose Sharks v. Dallas Stars – 8p ET
      • In Dallas the San Jose Sharks would come to town to take on the Stars, and in the first period Alexander Barabanov would open the scoring for the Sharks, but goals from Joe Pavelski and Jason Robertson would give the Stars the 2-1 lead. In the second period Oskar Lindblom would score to tie the game to two for the Sharks, but Fredrik Olofsson would score to retake the lead for the Stars. Then in the third period Roope Hintz and Esa Lindell would score to give the Stars the 5-2 victory over the Sharks.
    • Vancouver Canucks v. Calgary Flames – 10p ET
      • In Calgary the Flames would play host to the Vancouver Canucks, and after a scoreless first period Sheldon Dries would score for the Canucks, but goals from Elias Lindholm, Blake Coleman, and MacKenzie Weegar would give the Flames the 3-1 lead. Then in the third period Elias Pettersson would score for the Canucks, but it would not be enough as the Flames would hold on to defeat the Canucks 3-2.
    • Winnipeg Jets v. Edmonton Oilers – 10p ET
      • In the last Reverse Retro battle of 2022 the Edmonton Oilers would play host to the Winnipeg Jets, and in the first period Neal Pionk would score to give the Oilers the 1-0 lead. Then after a scoreless second period Klim Kostin would score for the Oilers, but Kyle Connor would score to give the Jets the 2-1 victory over the Oilers.

      • In Anaheim for an early evening matinee the Ducks would play host to the Nashville Predators, and in the first period Colton Sissons would score to give the Preds the 1-0 lead. In the second period Sam Carrick would score to get the Ducks on the board, but goals from Yakov Trenin and Filip Forsberg would give the Preds the 3-1 lead. Then in the third period Thomas Novak, Roman Josi, and Nino Niederreiter would give the Predators the 6-1 victory over the Ducks.

    • The NHL has fined the Toronto Maple Leafs for violating the CBA.
      • The Leafs were fined $100,000 for the team’s travel to St. Louis on Dec. 26th which is a violation of Article 16.5(b) of the CBA.

    • The NHL also fined Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe.
      • Keefe was fined $25,000 for demeaning conduct directed at the officials in St. Louis on Tuesday night.
