      • In Columbus, the Blue Jackets host the Hurricanes and in the first Brett Pesce scores his third of the year to give Carolina the 1-0 lead and then Brent Burns sixth of the year gives the Canes the 2-0 lead. Columbus then gets on the board when Sean Kuraly nets his eighth of the year. In the second, Carolina makes it a 3-1 lead when Jalen Chatfield scores a shorthanded goal, his third of the year. In the third, Brett Pesce scores his second of the night to out the Canes up three and then Jaccob Slavin scores his third of the year to make it a 5-1 Carolina lead. Columbus then comes within three when Johnny Gaudreau scores his 12th of the year but then Seth Jarvis’ seventh of the year gives the Hurricanes the 6-2 win over the Blue Jackets.

    • Dallas Stars v. New York Rangers – 7p ET
      • In New York City, the Stars make the annual visit to Broadway to take on the Rangers. After a scoreless first, Tyler Seguin’s 10th of the year in the second period on a Dallas power play gives the Stars the 1-0 lead. In the third, K’Andre Miller’s fifth of the year ties it up for New York. In the overtime session, Adam Fox’s ninth of the year gives the Rangers the 2-1 win over the Stars.

    • Seattle Kraken v. Boston Bruins – 7p ET
      • In Beantown, Seattle makes the long journey to Boston to take on the Bruins. In the first, Brandon Tanev’s eighth of the year gives the Kraken the 1-0 lead. In the second, Eeli Tolvanen’s sixth of the year puts Seattle up 2-0. In the third, Jaden Schwartz scores an empty net goal, his 10th of the year, as the Kraken shutout the Bruins 3-0.

      • In an Original Six matchup in the Motor City, the Maple Leafs and Red Wings renew their rivalry. In the first, Lucas Raymond gives Detroit the 1-0 lead with his 12th of the year. In the second, Detroit makes it a 2-0 lead with a power play goal by Robby Fabbri, his third of the year, but then Toronto gets on the board when Rasmus Sundin scores his third of the year. In the third, Ben Chiarot scores his third of the year to put Detroit up two and then Moritz Seider nets his third of the year as the Red Wings breeze by the Maple Leafs with the 4-1 win.

    • Vancouver Canucks v. Tampa Bay Lightning – 7p ET
      • In Tampa Bay, the Lightning host the Canucks. In the first, Conor Garland’s eighth of the year puts Vancouver up 1-0, however Corey Perry’s sixth of the year on a Tampa Bay power play ties the game up 1-1. In the second, Alex Killorn’s 13th of the year gives the Bolts the 2-1 lead but then Vancouver’s J.T. Miller ties it up with a power play goal, his 16th goal on the season.       • In Vegas, the Golden Knights host the Panthers for the lone time on the season. In the first, Nick Cousins is credited with a goal to give Florida the 1-0 lead. In the second, Vegas ties it up when Nicolas Roy scores his eighth of the year but then the Panthers re-take the lead when Sam Reinhart scores his 13th on the power play.       • In Philadelphia for the first of a home and home series the Flyers would play host to the Washington Capitals, and in the first period Garnet Hathaway would score for the Caps, but goals from Scott Laugton and Travis Konecny would give the Flyers the 2-1 lead. Then after a scoreless second period Owen Tippett and Konecny would score to give the Flyers the 4-1 lead, but Marcus Johansson and TJ Oshie would score to get the Caps back within one. However, in the final seconds of regulation Konecny would complete the hat trick to give the Flyers the 5-3 victory over the Capitals.

    Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of January 2nd through 8th.

    First Star – David Pastrnak (RW – BOS)

    • David Pastrnak would lead the NHL in goals with seven as he would also record an assist for a League leading eight points in four games played for the Boston Bruins. To open up the week Pastrnak would be held scoreless at the Winter Classic on Jan. 2nd, but he would record two goals in a 5-2 victory over Los Angeles on Jan. 5th. Then on Jan. 7th against San Jose he would record two goals in a 4-2 victory, and to close out the week Pastrnak would record a hat trick and an assist in a 7-1 victory over Anaheim on Jan. 8th.

    Second Star – Jack Hughes (C – NJ)

    • Jack Hughes would record five goals and two assists for seven points in three games played for the New Jersey Devils.       • The Capitals also announced that both Tom Wilson and Nicklas Backstrom have been taken off of LTIR and will be making their 2022-23 regular season debuts on Sunday against Columbus.

    • New York Rangers v. New Jersey Devils – 1p ET
      • In New Jersey the New York Rangers would come across the river to take on the Devils, and in the first period Jimmy Vesey would score to give the Rangers the 1-0 lead. In the second period Jack Hughes would score for the Devils, but goals from Julien Gauthier and Chris Kreider would give the Rangers the two goal lead. Then in the third period Jesper Bratt would score and Jack Hughes would net his second of the game to tie the game at three for the Devils to force overtime. Then in the third period Pontus Holmberg and Tavares would score to give the Maple Leafs the 4-1 victory over the Red Wings.

      • In Buffalo the Sabres would play host to the Minnesota Wild, and in the first period Victor Olofsson would score to give the Sabres the 1-0 lead. In the second period both teams would net three goals each as Brandon Duhaime, Kirill Kaprizov, and Ryan Hartman would score for the Wild while Tage Thompson, Rasmus Dahlin, and Dylan Cozens would score for the Sabres to keep the one goal lead.     • To commemorate Alex Ovechkin recently surpassing Gordie Howe for second all time in NHL goals scored the Washington Capitals have announced several events and initiatives.
      • Ovechkin will make a donation to the American Special Hockey Association (ASHA).
        • The donation will help cover ice costs for 100 special hockey teams across the United States.
        • The donation will support 5,000 athletes and 1,400 coaches from February through April.
      • Ovechkin will host more than 800 children from Arlington Public Schools at the Capitals practice on Jan. 13th.
      • The Capitals Youth Hockey Development team is working with select ice rinks throughout the Washington DC region to install an “Ovi’s Office” logo in the ice.
        • The logo will sit at the top of the left faceoff circle in each zone for a limited time in 2023.
