    There were 12 contests in NHL action yesterday.

     

     

    PHILADELPHIA 6, Detroit 5 (OT)

     

    Calgary 5, PITTSBURGH 4

     

    Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin would score twice in the contest against the Calgary but it would not be enough as the Pittsburgh Penguins would fall to the Calgary Flames by the score of 5-4.

     

     

    St. Louis 3, COLORADO 0

     

    A hard fought 40 minutes between both teams would be the story in this contest until the St. Louis Blues would score three straight goals in the third period, with two of the first goals coming within nearly 30 seconds of each other.

     

    TAMPA BAY 3, Montreal 0

    The Montreal Canadiens would get shutout by the Tampa Bay Lightning by the score of 3-0 in Tampa, Florida yesterday.

     

    NY ISLANDERS 5, Edmonton 2

     

     

    Ottawa 4, WINNIPEG 3 (OT)

    Despite two goals from Tyler Myles and another by Brandon Tanev, the Winnipeg Jets would fall in overtime to the Ottawa Senators by the score of 4-3.

     

    ARIZONA 2, Toronto 0

    The Toronto Maple Leafs would travel to Glendale, Arizona to take on the Arizona Coyotes and would fall to Arizona by the score of 2-0.

    Both of the goals for the Coyotes would come in the second period of the contest.

     

    CAROLINA 3, Dallas 0

    The Carolina Hurricanes would earn their third consecutive win with the 3-0 win last night over the Dallas Stars.

     

    Columbus 5, CHICAGO 2

    Despite being outshot in the contest, the Columbus Blue Jackets would leave Chicago with a 5-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks last night.



    VEGAS 5, Nashville 1

    The Vegas Golden Knights would snap their losing streak by defeating the Nashville Predators by the score of 5-1.

     

    SAN JOSE 3, Vancouver 2

    The Vancouver Canucks would fall to the San Jose Sharks by the score of 3-2 in San Jose last night, despite outshooting the Sharks with 34 shots on goal to San Jose’s 26.

    Boston 4, LOS ANGELES 2

    Tuukka Rask would net another win, extending his personal point streak to 13 games, amassing a record of 11-0-2 in those 13 games.  Rask would turn aside 23 shots as the Boston Bruins would double up the Los Angeles Kings with a 4-2 win in downtown Los Angeles last night.

    The Montreal Canadiens would fall in the overtime frame to the Toronto Maple Leafs, by the score of 4-3.

     

     

    Toronto’s John Tavares would reach the 60 point mark in the shortest time with the Maple Leafs win over the Canadiens last night.

    In this contest, the Florida Panthers would defeat the Washington Capitals by a score of 5-4 in overtime.

     

    Florida’s Mike Hoffman would be the seventh player in Florida Panthers history to record at least 25 goals in their first season with the club.

    There were 13 matchups yesterday in NHL action.

     

     

     

    PHILADELPHIA 5, Edmonton 4 (OT)

    The Philadelphia Flyers took on the Edmonton Oilers in the NHL European Game of the Week and would go on to defeat Edmonton 5-4 in the overtime frame.

     

    Philadelphia’s Nolan Patrick would go on to score the game winner at the 2:01 mark in the overtime frame.

    With this win by the Flyers, they have now won seven games in a row and eight out of their last ten games.

     

    New Jersey 3, MONTREAL 2 (OT)

    The New Jersey Devils would go on to defeat the Montreal Canadiens in overtime thanks to two goals by Nico Hischier, including the game-winner in the overtime frame.

    Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Phillip Danault would be the goal scorers for the Canadiens in this contest.

     

     

    TORONTO 3, Pittsburgh 2

    The Toronto Maple Leafs would take on the Pittsburgh Penguins and would come away with the 3-2 win, after being down 2-0 in the first period.

    Detroit 2, OTTAWA 0

     

    The Detroit Red Wings with this win over the Ottawa Senators would win back to back games.

     

    The Red Wings would score the only two goals in the contest in the first period with no one scoring any goals in the second or third periods.

     

    FLORIDA 3, Vegas 1

    The Vegas Golden Knights would fall to the Florida Panthers, leading to a three game skid.

    With the win by Florida, they now have a record of 21-21-8 on the season, good for 50 points.

     

    NY ISLANDERS 4, Los Angeles 2

    The New York Islanders would go on to double up the Los Angeles Kings with a 4-2 win.  Ryan Pulock would go on to have a three assist night, notching all three assists in the third period.

     

     

     

    St. Louis 4, COLUMBUS 2

    With the 4-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues, the Columbus Blue Jackets would go on to split the season series.

     

    St. Louis Vladimir Tarasenko would go on to register one goal and two assists in the contest.

     

     

    WINNIPEG 9, Anaheim 3

    The Winnipeg Jets throttled the Anaheim Ducks with a 9-3 win, and giving the Jets 70 points thus far on the season.

    Winnipeg’s Jack Roslovic would go on to register a hat trick in this contest, his first career hat trick.

     

    With the 9-3 loss, the Ducks have lost their last three games and have a record of 2-6-2 in their last ten contests.

    In a hard fought contest the Tampa Bay Lightning would go on to defeat the New York Rangers with a 3-2 win at Madison Square Garden last night.

     

     

    Dallas 3, NASHVILLE 1

    The Dallas Stars would go on to win their fourth straight contest with the 3-1 win over the Nashville Predators last night.

    Despite being tied going into the third period, the Nashville Predators would fall to the Stars.

  • Leafs Acquire Veteran Blueliner Jake Muzzin

    The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced that they have acquired 29 year old Jake Muzzin in exchange for Prospect Carl Grundstrom & Sean Durzi (rights), along with a 1st round selection in 2019.

    Muzzin brings size and options for Mike Babcock. The defence pairing should now look like this going forward.

    Jake Gardiner – Nikita Zaitsev
    Travis Dermott – Ron Hainsey

    On top of adding a defencemen with experience and 2 Stanley Cups, Muzzin brings another year on his contract meaning this is not a rental deal. But a Hockey deal. The same thing that GM Kyle Dubas said he was only going to do.

    Game Recap – 1/23/2019 – Washington Capitals v. Toronto Maple Leafs

    Washington Capitals (27-16-6 60pts) v. Toronto Maple Leafs (29-17-2 60pts)

     

    Game Recap:

    For the majority of the first period it was a major snoozer until the final couple of minutes when the Capitals got a powerplay when Patrick Marleau would be called for hooking. Nicklas Backstrom would net the powerplay goal to give the Capitals the 1-0 lead, but it would not last long as right away Nazem Kadri would poke the puck past Braden Holtby to tie the game at 1.

    Steve’s Analysis: Leafs had some jump at the beginning of the period but soon began to settle in. Trading shot for shot in one of the most boring periods I’ve seen. Backstrom scored on a Marleau penalty to make it 1-0 but a miscue by Holtby allowed Kadri to tie the game up with 24 seconds remaining.

     

    The second period would have a better start for the Capitals as the TJ Oshie would feed Alex Ovechkin on the rush and Ovechkin would rip it from the top of the faceoff circle past Frederik Andersen to give the Capitals the 2-1 lead. After some more back and forth between the two teams, the Maple Leafs would capitalize after a great defensive play by William Nylander that would lead to Nakita Zaitsev scoring his first of the season to tie the game at 2. Then Ovechkin would take a bad cross checking penalty to give the Maple Leafs the powerplay, which Auston Matthews would score on to get himself back on the score sheet while on the powerplay to give the Maple Leafs a 3-2 lead going into the 2nd intermission.

    Steve’s Analysis: Leafs looked to be having one of those games again. But Zaitsev with an nice point shot tied it up and Matthews with a deadly studder step and snipe to break the slump and make it 3-2 Toronto heading to the 3rd.

     

    The third period would be all Maple Leafs the first 10 minutes of the period which would feature two more goals from Kadri to net the hat trick and give the Maple Leafs a three goal lead. The Capitals would get one back when Matt Niskanen bombed one from the point, but it would too late for the Capitals as Mitch Marner would then net the empty netter to seal this game for the Maple Leafs and give the Capitals their seventh straight loss going into the All Star Break.

    Steve’s Analysis: Leafs came to play in 3rd not letting Andersen’s great game go to waste. Kadri notched the Hat trick, along with 3 point for his line mate Nylander and Marner sealed the deal with an empty netter off of a Ovechkin giveaway in the neutral zone.

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Gain the early momentum

    The Capitals need to strike early, and suck the wind out of Scotiabank Center, and put the Maple Leafs on their heels. The Capitals have given up too many early goals and need to get one first before Toronto can.

     

    2. Play like it’s the playoffs

    The Capitals need to start playing their games as if they were all playoff games. While it may be moot after tonight as the Capitals will be going on a break after they play the Leafs, it’s a good way for them to enforce good habits even during a trying time.

    Today is Monday, January 21st, 2019, and these are your news and notes.

     

    There were five contests in NHL action yesterday.

     

    CHICAGO 8, Washington 5

     

    The Chicago Blackhawks would face off against the defending Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals and would come away with an 8-5 win in Chicago.

     

    This contest would fast and furious for the Chicago Blackhawks and would end the first period with a 3-1 lead, thanks to goals from Brandon Saad and Patrick Kane with the third goal credited to Jonathan Toews.  The third goal would be due to Washington Capitals Dmitry Orlov hitting the puck into his own net.

     

    The second period would get very chippy in the first six minutes of gameplay with six penalties being duelled out within 45 seconds.  Washington would try to get shots in but nothing would hit in the second period, aside from Dmitry Orlov’s goal.  Alex DeBrincat would score for Chicago, making the score 4-2 at the end of the second period.

     

    The third period is when Washington would turn on the jets to make a full comeback and came within a goal to make the contest 5-4, but the comeback would not be enough as Chicago would score three more goals.

     

    Jonathan Toews would score three goals in the contest, giving him his second hat trick on the season.

     

    With an assist from Chicago’s Patrick Kane, he now has sole possession of third place in terms of assists all-time in the long and storied history of the Blackhawks franchise.

    Toews would have his third game in which he registered at least five points in a game.

    NY ISLANDERS 3, Anaheim 0

     

    The Metropolitan Division-leading NY Islanders faced off against the slumping Anaheim Ducks and would go on to win this contest 3-0.  With this win by the Islanders, they have now won their last five contests.

     

    This would also be the second consecutive shutout that the Islanders would have in this contest.

     

    VANCOUVER 3, Detroit 2

    Vancouver Canucks rookie phenom Elias Pettersson would return to action in this game and would record one goal and one assist to help lift the Canucks past the Detroit Red Wings by the score of 3-2.

    Arizona 4, TORONTO 2

    Carolina 7, EDMONTON 4

    Edmonton Oilers Leon Drasital would score two goals for his team but that would not be enough as the Oilers would fall to the Carolina Hurricanes by the score of 7-4.

    For Carolina, the scoring would be often.  Nino Niederreiter would have two goals in the contest and Hurricanes phenom Sebastian Aho would find the score sheet three times with three assists in the start of a road trip for Carolina.  Carolina’s Jaccob Slavin would have three assists of his own in this contest.

     

     

    There are only four games in action today in the NHL.  The first game starts at 3 p.m. with the Nashville Predators visiting the Colorado Avalanche.

     

     

     

     

    NWHL

     

    In NWHL action yesterday, the Minnesota Whitecaps would close out the home portion of the regular season schedule with a win over the Connecticut Whale, sweeping the weekend series.

    The Minnesota Whitecaps would go to throttle the Connecticut Whale by the score of 9-0 in front of another sold-out crowd at TRIA Rink.

    Minnesota’s Jonna Curtis would lead all skaters for the Whitecaps with a goal and three assists in the contest and would once again tie all NWHL skaters for most points on the season.  Curtis has 17 points on the season thus far.

    Kendall Coyne Schofield had two goals and an assist in the contest and Katie McGovern would have two goals of her own.

    Allie Thunstrom would also have a tally and a helper while Emma Stauber had two assists.

    Kalli Funk would go on to net her first career NWHL goal.

    Whitecaps goaltender Julie Friend picked up the shutout in her first career start, recording 18 saves.

    For the Whale, star Meeri Räisänen would leave in the second period due to a collision and Laura Brennan would replace her in net.  Brennan would have 11 saves on 18 attempts while Räisänen had 21 saves on 23 attempts before she had to depart the contest.

    After Toronto’s Ron Hainsey scored the first goal of the game, the Florida Panthers would score three unanswered goals to go on to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs.

     

     

    Montreal 4, COLUMBUS 1

    The Montreal Canadiens would face off against the Columbus Blue Jackets in a key game for Columbus in the Metro division standings.  However, the Montreal Canadiens would soundly defeat the Blue Jackets by the score of 4-1.

     

     

    NY Islanders 2, WASHINGTON 0

    In a key contest for Metropolitan Division standings, the New York Islanders faced off against the Washington Capitals.  The Islanders would go on to defeat the Washington Capitals 2-0, and with that win, the Islanders now hold first place in the Metro division.

    During a pre-game presentation the Capitals honoured Brooks Orpik who recently played in his 1,000th NHL contest as well as the Capitals showing a video tribute for former Capitals Head Coach Barry Trotz, who stepped down from the position over the summer.  Trotz is now the Head Coach for the New York Islanders.
