    Today is Sunday, January 20th, 2019, and these are your news and notes.

     

    There were 11 contests on the NHL schedule yesterday.

     

     

     

    Anaheim 3, NEW JERSEY 2

     

    In the first contest of the day, the Anaheim Ducks took on the New Jersey Devils in the NHL European Game of the Week.  The Ducks, after getting their first win after losing twelve straight contests on Thursday night, would defeat New Jersey by the score of 3-2.

    For the New Jersey Devils, they enter their bye week having lost their last three games and seven out of the last ten.

     

    COLORADO 7, Los Angeles 1

     

    The Colorado Avalanche took on the Los Angeles Kings and would soundly defeat the Kings thanks to six goals in the second period and would go on to win this contest by the score of 7-1.

     

     

    This would also be a heavily-filled penalty contest for the Kings, who amassed eight penalties in the contest.  Five of the eight penalties would come in the third period alone.

     

    NY Rangers 3, BOSTON 2

     

    Philadelphia 5, MONTREAL 2

    There would be four different scores for the Philadelphia Flyers in the contest and two different scorers for the Montreal Canadiens in this contest.

     

    Montreal’s Brendan Gallagher would lead all skaters for the Canadiens with eight shots on goal, but would not score on any of those shots.

     

     

    For the Flyers, goaltender Carter Hart would have 35 saves in the contest.  Hart has a record of 6-5-1 in those 12 contests.

     

     

    TAMPA BAY 6, San Jose 3

    Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos would go on to have a two goal, one assist performance and help the Lightning defeat the San Jose Sharks by the score of 6-3.

     

     

    San Jose Sharks Evander Kane would also have a two goal performance and Marcus Sorensen would become the eighth player for the Sharks this season to have at least ten goals.

     

    ST. LOUIS 3, Ottawa 2

    St. Louis Blues goaltender Jordan Binnington would become the sixth different goaltender in Blues history to have at least a point in at least their first five contests.

     

     

    DALLAS 4, Winnipeg 2

    The Dallas Stars would take on the Winnipeg Jets and double up the Jets 4-2.

     

    In this contest for Dallas, there would be four different goal scorers in the contest.

    The Jets would not score until the third period and would fight to come back but it would still not be enough.

     

     

    Florida 4, NASHVILLE 2

     

    Nashville’s Nick Bonino and Auston Watson would score the goals for the Predators in this contest.

     

    MINNESOTA 2, Columbus 1

     

    Minnesota’s Zach Parise would score one of the two goals, his 20th on the season, in a hard fought battle between both teams in the contest.

    Columbus Blue Jackets Artemi Panarin would score the lone goal for the Blue Jackets in this contest.

     

    Calgary 5, EDMONTON 2

     

    Edmonton’s Jesse Puljujarvi would notch two assists, with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Milan Lucic notching the only two goals for the Oilers in this contest.

     

     

    VEGAS 7, Pittsburgh 3

     

    Vegas Golden Knights Jonathan Marchessault became the second different player to record hat tricks for the franchise.  Marchessault joins William Karlsson, who has two hat tricks with the franchise.

    In the lone NWHL of the day, the Connecticut Whale took on the Minnesota Whitecaps.

     

    MINNESOTA WHITECAPS 2, Connecticut Whale 0

     

    Minnesota Allie Thunstrom and Hannah Brandt scored the two goals for the Whitecaps in a hard fought battle for both sides.

    Minnesota’s win put them back in first place in the NWHL standings with a record of 9-4-0 on the season

     

    The game was scoreless until toward the end of the second period when Allie Thunstrom scored her third goal on the season.  The goals were assisted by  Brooke White-Lancette and  Chelsey Brodt Rosenthal. 

    Minnesota’s second goal was scored by Hannah Brandt, her fifth on the season.  Brandt’s goal would be assisted by Amy Menke and Kendall Coyne Shofield.

     

    Connecticut Whale goaltender Meeri Räisänen would go on to have a 29 save performance in the contest and would have more phenomenal saves throughout the contest.

     

    This contest ended up being the Whitecaps “You Can Play” game in which all Whitecaps players donned jersey with rainbow numbers and accents. The You Can Play Project is an initiative that emphasizes equality and respect in sport, particularly for LGBTQ+ individuals.

     

    Today there is only one contest in the NWHL.  The Minnesota Whitecaps will be hosting their last home game of the regular season.  The game will be available to watch on NWHL.zone/watch

     

    The game that was to take place between the Metropolitan Riveters and the Boston Pride has been postponed to a date to be determined.

    Boston Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask would register his 250th career win as well as his 42nd career shutout.  Rask is two wins shy of tying the franchise record for wins by a goaltender, currently held by Tiny Thompson.

    Carolina 4, NY ISLANDERS 3

    There would be four different goal scorers for the Carolina Hurricanes in their 4-3 win over the New York Islanders last night.

    PITTSBURGH 5, Florida 1

    The Pittsburgh Penguins would end up scoring two shorthanded goals in this contest  in the second period en route to a 5-1 win over the Florida Panthers last night.

    Penguins C Sidney Crosby would score his 20th goal on the season and with that goal, Crosby has scored at least 20 goals in 12 seasons on his career.

     

    Florida’s Aaron Ekblad would score the lone goal for the Panthers and when he did, he would become the top goal scorer among defenceman in Panthers history.

    Montreal 3, DETROIT 2

    With Montreal’s 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings last night, this would mark the second straight win for the Canadiens over the Red Wings.

    TAMPA BAY 4, Columbus 0

    Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov would become the first player to reach 70 points in the first 43 games of a season since Jaromir Jagr in the 1999-2000 season, who did that in 38 games played.

    WASHINGTON 5, Philadelphia 3

    The Washington Capitals would go on to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-3 to notch their first win at home in the year 2019.

    Between both teams, there would be the 27th instance in League history when the Capitals and Flyers would score two goals in four seconds or less.

     

    TJ Oshie would register his 200th NHL goal in this contest when he scored at the 9:19 mark in the second period.

    Dallas 3, ST. LOUIS 1

    Stars Tyler Seguin would score two goals and goaltender Ben Bishop would have 26 saves in the contest as they would take down the St. Louis Blues by the score of 3-1.

    Over the last four games, Seguin has registered three, two-goal contests.

    Dallas’ Miro Heiskanen registered his 20th point on the season in the contest and marked the fifth time in the past six seasons in which multiple teenage defenceman have had at least 20+ points in a season.

    Despite outshooting the Stars 27-17, St. Louis would not be able to mount the comeback.

    In the Winnipeg Jets 7-4 win, there would be seven different goal scorers in the contest.

    Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury would get the win for the Golden Knights, who went on to win their seventh straight contest.

    Fleury has not had a regulation loss in his last 12 games played and has posted a 9-0-3 record.

    Today is Saturday, January 5th, 2019, and these are your news and notes.

    There were seven games on tap yesterday.

     

    PITTSBURGH 4, Winnipeg 0

    The Pittsburgh Penguins would go on to shutout the Winnipeg Jets and with the win, they would extend a personal win streak at home to 18 contests against the Jets/Thrashers franchise and this streak dates back to March 24, 2007.

    This win streak the second longest since the Anaheim Ducks would have a 25 game win streak at home against the Calgary Flames from April 4, 2007 through April 4, 2017.

    Four different Penguins would all score the goals and Penguins goaltender Matt Murray would turn aside all 33 shots he faced in the contest.

     

     

     

     

    DETROIT 4, Nashville 3 (OT)

    The Detroit Red Wings would take on the Nashville Predators and come away with the 4-3 win in overtime in downtown Detroit at Little Caesars Arena.

    Dylan Larkin would score the game-winner in the overtime frame for the Red Wings.

     

     

     

    CAROLINA 4, Columbus 2

    Carolina’s phenom Sebastian Aho would net an empty net goal with two seconds left in the contest as well as assisting on Micheal Ferland’s goal in the first period.

    Aho would play in his 200th NHL game since being drafted with the 35th overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

    Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovksy would have 13 saves on 16 shot attempts before being pulled in the second period for Joonas Korpisalo who turned aside all of the 14 shots he faced.

     

    DALLAS 2, Washington 1 (OT)

    The Washington Capitals losing streak would reach three ass they would fall to the Dallas Stars in overtime, losing 2-1.

    Stars Tyler Seguin scored in the overtime frame to extend Dallas’ winning streak at home against the Capitals to 17 games.  This win streak dates back to October 8, 1996.

     

    Dallas goaltender Anton Khudobin would have a great performance, recording 36 saves.

    COLORADO 6, NY Rangers 1

    The Colorado Avalanche would face off against the NY Rangers last night and would defeat the Rangers by the score of 6-1.

     

    Colorado’s Ryan Graves would score his first NHL goal in this contest in the third period.

    Colorado’s trio of Gabe Landeskog, Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen would all score a goal in the contest for the fifth time and whenever this trio has scored in the same game, they are 5-0-0.

    At the same time, whenever this trio at least collects one point in a game, they have a record of 18-3-5 on the season.

     

    New York Rangers Alexander Georgiev had 41 saves on 47 shot attempts in this contest.

     

    New Jersey 3, ARIZONA 2 (SO)

     

    New Jersey’s Drew Stafford netted the winner in the shootout to give the Devils the 3-2 win over the Arizona Coyotes.

     

     

     

    Vegas 3, ANAHEIM 2

    The Vegas Golden Knights would extend their point streak to eight games on the season as well as extending their win streak to five games.

    Vegas’ goalscorers included Max Pacioretty, Nate Schmidt and Tomas Nosek.

    Today is December 31st, 2018, and these are your news and notes.

     

    There was one contest yesterday in the NHL.

     

    Vegas 5, ARIZONA 1

     

    Arizona Coyotes Oliver Ekman-Larsson would collect his 312th career point to surpass Keith Yandle for the most points in Coyotes history as a defenceman since the club relocated to Arizona in 1996-97.

    However , he still trails Fredrik Olausson and Dave Babych in the long history of the Winnipeg Jets/Arizona Coyotes history for most points as a defenceman.

     

     

     

    Marc-Andre Fleury would move to 6-0-3 in his last nine contests with the win over the Coyotes.

     

     

    With the Vegas’ win, they are the first team in League history to have at least 50 points in the standings in their first two seasons before January 1.  The Golden Knights are also now tied for first place in the Western Conference standings.

     

     

    There is a 13 game slate today and that kicks off with the Washington Capitals taking on the Nashville Predators at 12:30 p.m., ET.  You can read TXHT’s preview of that contest at the following page.

    Yesterday there were two contests in the NWHL.

     

     

    For the fourth and final time on the NWHL season, the Buffalo Beauts would go on to shutout the Minnesota Whitecaps by the score of 4-0.

    Buffalo’s Maddie Elia would have a hand on all four of the goals scored by the Beauts in this contest with two goals and two assists.

    With three minutes left in the first period, the Beauts would open up the scoring when Elia would re-direct a pass from Emily Pflazer from the top of the face-off circle to get the puck past the Whitecaps goaltender, Amanda Leveille.

    In the second period at the 3:15 mark, Pflazer would score off of asssits from Elia and Dani Cameranesi and then Hayley Scammura would make the score 3-0 with her goal at the 11:47 mark.

    Elia would score the final goal of the contest at the 12:35 mark in the third period.

    Buffalo’s win would prevent the Minnesota Whitecaps from sweeping the season series.

    The contest would not be without a penalty filled game, however.

    The Boston Pride would go on to defeat the Connecticut Whale 2-1 thanks to Haley Skarupa scoring the game winner 37 seconds into the overtime frame yesterday afternoon.

    The Pride would open up the scoring when Toni Ann Miano netted her second goal of the season in the first period.  The contest would stay at 1-0 until Michelle Lowenheim scored the first NWHL goal of her career with less than five minutes left in the second period.

    In the NHL European Game of the Week yesterday, the New Jersey Devils would go on to defeat the Carolina Hurricanes by the score of 2-0.  Mackenzie Blackwood became the third youngest goaltender in the history of the Devils franchise to record his first NHL shutout.

    In a night of firsts for two Washington Capitals players, the Capitals would go on to defeat the Ottawa Senators 3-2.  Washington’s Tyler Lewington and Madison Bowey would go on to score their first career NHL goals in the contest.  Lewington would also go on to register a “Gordie Howe hat trick” in the contest as well.

    In the lone NWHL contest of the day, the Buffalo Beauts took on the Minnesota Whitecaps.

    The Minnesota Whitecaps would get back in the win column when the Whitecaps would go on to defeat the Buffalo Beauts at KeyBank Center yesterday afternoon in downtown Buffalo.

    Minnesota’s Lee Stecklein would be the difference maker when she scored the game winner with 1:17 left in the game to seal the win for the Whitecaps.

    Kendall Coyne Schoefield would be responsible for the Whitecaps tying the score at 1 in the second period thanks to a power-play for the Whitecaps.

    With Minnesota’s win, they move to a record of 7-2 and Buffalo falls to a record of 4-4 on the season.

    The Whitecaps and Beauts face off again today at 1:30 p.m., ET.

    Also today, the Boston Pride visit the Connecticut Whale at 3 p.m., ET.

    In Day 4 of the 2019 World Junior Championships,

     

     

    Day 5 of competition has two games and that is Switzerland taking on Russia at 5 p.m., PST. and then Kazakhstan taking on Slovakia at 7:30 p.m., ET.

    There were eight games yesterday.

     

    Columbus 3, NEW JERSEY 0

    The Columbus Blue Jackets would go on to defeat the New Jersey Devils yesterday afternoon by the score of 3-0.

     

     

    The New Jersey Devils would wear their own heritage jerseys in this contest.  The jerseys were worn by the Devils from the 1982-83 season, the first season for the team in New Jersey, until the 1991-92 NHL season.

    Blue jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky would register his 14th shutout since the 2016-17 NHL season, the most shutouts in that time frame.

     

    CAROLINA 5, Boston 3

    In this contest, the Carolina Hurricanes would wear their Hartford Whalers throwbacks for a Hartford Whalers night last night in Raleigh and would go on to defeat the the Boston Bruins by the score of 5-3.

     

     

    Carolina’s Sebastian Aho would go on to have a four-point performance (2G, 2A) in the contest and Carolina’s Petr Mrazek would go on to have a 27 save performance on 30 shots.

    In addition to Aho, Teuvo Teravainen would also have a four-point game.

     

     

    Carolina would also go on to have two shorthanded goals in this game.

    Game Recap – 12/23/2018 – Boston Bruins v. Hartford Whalers

     

     

    Philadelphia 3, NY RANGERS 2 (SO)

    The Philadelphia Flyers would go on to defeat the New York Rangers yesterday and this would mark the fifth consecutive win the Flyers would have over the Rangers.

     

    Despite the loss in the shootout, the Rangers would still get a point in the standings.

     

     

    Florida 6, CHICAGO 3

    In the Florida Panthers 6-3 win over the Chicago Blackhawks yesterday, Florida’s Jayce Hawryluk would score the first two goals of his NHL career.

    Florida has won four out of their last five contests.

     

    In addition to Hawryluk having two goals, Panthers defenceman Mackenzie Wagner would also have a two point performance.  Wagner would have two assists in this contest.  This would be the first multi-point contest for both players.

     

    TORONTO 5, Detroit 4 (OT)

    Detroit’s Dylan Larkin would extend his point streak to a career-high of 11 contests.  This makes it the longest such streak since Henrik Zetterberg had an 11 game run during the 2010-11 season.

    Toronto’s Patrick Marleau would play in his 1,612th regular season NHL game, tying Hall of Famer Ray Bourque for the tenth most in NHL history.

    Detroit’s Trevor Daley would go on to play in his 1,000th NHL career contest last night in this game.

     

     

     

    NY Islanders 3, DALLAS 1

    With the Islanders 3-1 win at the Dallas Stars last night, the New York Islanders would finish off their road trip going into the holiday break with a 3-1-0 record.

     

    Los Angeles 4, VEGAS 3 (OT)

    The Los Angeles Kings won their 36th regular season overtime game since the 3-on-3 overtime format was introduced in the 2015-16 season when the Kings go on to defeat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3.

     

    This would be the Vegas Golden Knights second consecutive overtime loss.

     

    Arizona 4, SAN JOSE 3 (SO)

    The Arizona Coyotes would go on to defeat the San Jose Sharks 4-3.

     

    With Joe Thornton’s assist in the first period on Tim Heed’s goal, Thornton would register his 1,041st career assist.  He passed Marcel Dionne for tenth place all time in the NHL.  He is now eight assists shy on his career from tying Gordie Howe for ninth place.

     

     

     

    The NHL resumes action Thursday night.

    Today is Tuesday, December 18th, 2018, and these are your news and notes.

     

    There were five contests taking place in the NHL last night.

     

    Anaheim 4, PITTSBURGH 2

    The Anaheim Ducks faced off against the Pittsburgh Penguins last night and would come away with the 4-2 win.  With this win, the Ducks have won six consecutive road games, as well as their ninth game out of the last ten contests.

    For the Pittsburgh Penguins, this loss would give them a record of 15-12-6 (36 points), and places them in fourth place in the Metropolitan division.

     

    COLUMBUS 1, Vegas 0

    The Columbus Blue Jackets faced off against the defending Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights and would come away with the 1-0 win.

    Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky would go on to register his 13th shutout since the start of the 2016-17 season and is tied with Pekka Rinne for the most shutouts in that time span.

     

    Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno would score the lone goal in the third period.  This contest would also mark the 800th NHL game for Foligno.

     

     

     

     

    Boston 4, MONTREAL 0

    The Boston Bruins would visit the Montreal Canadiens and would come out on Montreal with a 4-0 victory.

    With this win, the Bruins have won the last five contests against the Canadiens when they are the visitors.

     

    Bruins goaltender Jaroslav Halak would turn aside all 22 shots he faced whereas Canadiens goaltender Carey Price had 31 saves on 35 save opportunities.

     

     

    OTTAWA 4, Nashville 3 (OT)

     

    Ottawa Senators Brady Tkachuk would register his tenth career goal as a Senator in his 24th game played with the club last night.

     

     

    Ottawa rookie defenceman Max LaJoie would also register his seventh goal in this contest, good for a tie for third place all-time in Senators history for most goals by a rookie defenceman.

     

     

    Also for Ottawa, the rookies on this team account for most points combined between all players across the League thus far during the 2018-19 season.

     

     

    Thoms Chabot would seal the win for the Senators in the overtime frame.

     

     

    NY Islanders 4, COLORADO 1

    NY Islanders goaltender Thomas Griess would make 30 saves in the contest to give the Islanders the 4-1 win over the Colorado Avalanche last night.

    Vegas 4, NY RANGERS 3 (OT)

    The Vegas Golden Knights would defeat the New York Rangers in overtime yesterday afternoon with Vegas’ Alex Tuch would score the game-winner at 2:11 in the overtime frame.

     

     

     

    CAROLINA 3, Arizona 0

    Carolina Hurricanes G Petr Mrazek would go on to have a 23 save performance to seal the shutout victory for the Hurricanes.

     

    Calgary 7, ST. LOUIS 2

    The Calgary Flames would score a shorthanded goal for the third consecutive game for the eighth time in franchise history and would go on to defeat the St. Louis Blues 7-2 in St. Louis last night.

     

    Buffalo 4, BOSTON 2

     

    Buffalo’s Jack Eichel now has five regular-season games of at least four points before his 23rd birthday and joins four other Buffalo Sabres for this mark in franchise history.

     

     

    San Jose 7, CHICAGO 3

    San Jose Sharks D Brent Burns became the 38th player in League history to be listed as a defenceman to register at least 600 points in the contest against the Chicago Blackhawks.

     

     

     

    WINNIPEG 5, Tampa Bay 4 (OT)

     

    Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele would score the game-winner in the overtime frame with 42 seconds left to seal the 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

     

    VANCOUVER 4, Edmonton 2

     

    Vancouver’s rookie Elias Pettersson extended his point streak to seven games and now leads all rookies with 35 points on the season in 30 games played.

    There were eight contests in action yesterday.

     

    NEW JERSEY 5, Vegas 4 (OT)

    The Vegas Golden Knights would fall to the New Jersey Devils after be up 4-1.  New Jersey Devils would score four unanswered goals with New Jersey’s Nico Hischier scoring the game winner just 41 seconds into the overtime frame.

     

     

    Arizona 4, NY RANGERS 3 (OT)

     

    The Arizona Coyotes would also stage a come from behind win after being down three goals in the contest at the New York Rangers last night.  It would be the 12th time that the Coyotes franchise would accomplish this and the 29th time overall in franchise history.

     

     

    For the Rangers, goalie Henrik Lundqvist would register 30 saves on 34 opportunities.

     

     

    PITTSBURGH 5, Boston 3

     

    In an amazing performance, Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Casey DeSmith became the third goalie in the last 20 years to have a game in which he had at least 48 saves.  DeSmith joins Jeff Zatkoff and Ty Conklin.

     

    Boston Bruins goalie Jaroslav Halak had a performance of 23 saves on 28 save chances.

     

     

     

    Ottawa 4, DETROIT 2

     

    The Ottawa Senators would go on and get the road win when they would defeat the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 last night at Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit, Michigan last night.

     

    Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard would have 28 saves in the contest and Ottawa Senators goalie Craig Anderson would have a performance of 26 saves on 28 save chances.

     

     

    Washington 6, CAROLINA 5 (OT)

     

    After the Washington Capitals would be down 4-1 at 6:41 mark in the second period, the Capitals would tie the game 4-4 toward the end of the second period.

     

    Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin would have consecutive games in which he would have a hat-trick, and now has 28 goals on the season.

     

     

     

     

    When Ovechkin scored the power-play goal in the third period at the 9:49 mark, it would be his 237th career power-play goal. He now ranks at seventh place on the all-time list for power-play goals.

     

    Finally, for the Washington Capitals, Jonas Siegenthaler registered his first NHL point with the assist on Alex Oveckin’s goal at the 3:56 mark in the first period.

    ST. LOUIS 4, Colorado 3 (OT)

    The St. Louis Blues would go on to defeat the Colorado Avalanche in overtime with the 4-3 win at home last night.

     

    At the 2:05 mark in the overtime period, St. Louis Blues Ryan O’Reilly would cap off a two-point night when O’Reilly scored the game winner.

     

     

    Also in the contest, Colorado Avalanche’s Mikko Rantanen would register his 40th assist on the season with the secondary assist on J.T. Compher’s eighth goal on the season at the 13:10 mark in the third period.

     

     

    Winnipeg 4, CHICAGO 3 (OT)

    Chicago Blackhawks captain Johnathan Toews would net two goals, but it would not be enough as the Blackhawks would fall to the Winnipeg Jets 4-3 at United Center in Chicago, Illinois last night.

     

     

     

    The Jets Mark Scheifele would net his sixth overtime winner, which is good for third place in franchise history.  Scheifele now only trails Ilya Kovalchuk and Dustin Byfuglien for the career lead.

     

    EDMONTON 4, Philadelphia 1

     

     

    Connor McDavid would have two goals, and an assist, good for his 34th career three-point performance.  It is now ranked tied for fifth place for most three-point games before one’s 22nd birthday.

    The Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins would both unveil thier logos that will be used for the upcoming Stadium Series game on February 27th, 2019.  The logos are “stripped-down” versions of their current logos.  The jerseys will be released at a later date.
