Game Recap – 2/1/2019 – Calgary Flames v. Washington Capitals

    Calgary Flames (33-13-5 71pts) v. Washington Capitals (27-17-6 60pts)

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals came back from the break looking fresh, and would show it early on as they would get the first goal of the game when the Capitals would force the play in the Calgary Flames zone and Nic Dowd would tip in a John Carlson point shot for his fifth of the season. The first period would feature a lot of back and forth between these two teams, but late in the period we would have some fireworks when Mikael Backlund would score on a beautiful individual effort to tie the game at one a piece, but the Capitals would not lay down as they brought the play to the Flames and crashed Mike Smith’s net and Dmitrij Jaskin would knock in the rebound for his second of the season, and give the Capitals the 2-1 lead with less than 45 seconds left in the period.

The Capitals would start the second period on fire as the second line of Tom Wilson, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Jakub Vrana would connect for a quick goal on a Wilson wrister less than a minute into the period. Then 83 seconds later, the Flames would get one back as a point shot by TJ Brodie would take a couple deflections and go off of Garnet Hathaway to cut the Capitals lead back to one. The Flames would take back to back penalties to allow the Capitals powerplay an opportunity to get into the game, and while the first powerplay looked good for the Capitals, the second opportunity was not as good. However, the Capitals would get their third straight powerplay opportunity when Mark Giordano would take his second penalty of the period. The Capitals would get some good looks, but once again would not be able to capitalize on the powerplay. In the second period the Capitals out shot the Flames 16 to 7.

The third period would not start in the Capitals favor as Michal Kempny would be called for a penalty 45 seconds into the period, but would kill off that penalty only to take another penalty when Dmitry Orlov would be called for holding. The Capitals would persevere as they would kill off their second straight penalty. However, the Flames would tie the game up when Elias Lindholm would tip in a Johnny Gaudreau point shot. But it would be a late penalty against Backlund for Holding that would result in a powerplay goal by Kuznetsov to win the game for the Capitals and end their 7 game losing streak.

Game Recap – 1/8/2019 – Philadelphia Flyers v. Washington Capitals

    Philadelphia Flyers (15-21-6 36pts) v. Washington Capitals (25-12-4 54pts)

    Game Recap:

To start the game both the Washington Capitals and the Philadelphia Flyers would test each other out, and get a feel for the game, but it would be off a defensive zone faceoff that the Flyers would win but Jakub Vrana getting to the puck first and taking it all the way down tot he offensive zone and throwing the puck on net for Tom Wilson to tip in to get the first goal of the game. Then Andre Burakovsky would take an ill advised offensive zone penalty for hooking, but the Capitals would shut down the Flyers powerplay and prevent them from taking a shot on goal. However, the Flyers would strike back when Michal Kempny would make a bad pass out of the zone that would be picked off and lead to Jakub Voracek tying the game at 1 a piece. The period would end with game tied at one a piece, but one of the bigger points is the fact that the Flyers dominated the Capitals both in shots and in the faceoff circle. The Capitals would only generate 4 shots in the opening period.

To start the second period, there would be a lot of back and forth between the two teams until Robert Hagg would be called for hooking against Evgeny Kuznetsov. However, on the powerplay the Capitals would not generate much with the opportunity. the Capitals would respond not that much longer as Lars Eller would let a shot of from the point that TJ Oshie would tip in front of the net to give the Capitals the lead. Then not the long after getting the lead, Vrana would cause a turnover and turn on the wheels as he does a great individual play to create a turnover and then convert it into a goal for the Capitals. The Capitals would keep the pressure going as ALex Ovechkin would draw a tripping penalty on Ivan Provorov, and the Capitals would strike in the final seconds of the powerplay as Vrana would score his second goal of the game. In the final minute of the second period, Brooks Orpik would get called for roughing which would give the Flyers a powerplay to start the third period. Biggest flaw in the Capitals game right now is in the faceoff circle as the Flyers are manhandling them in that category.

The Capitals would start the period by killing the remainder of Orpik’s penalty, but not long after, Radko Gudas would lay a clean hit on Nic Dowd which Devante Smith=-Pelly would step up and fight Gudas. However, the Smith-Pelly would gain an additional two minutes for instigating to give the Flyers another powerplay. After the Capitals would kill off this penalty, Wilson would get called for slashing, but the Capitals would kill that one as well. Then Travis Konecny would be upset over a hit by Alex Ovechkin and would then take a slashing penalty as a result. On this powerplay, the Capitals would get some looks, but would not capitalize on the powerplay. The Flyers would respond though after a failed clearing attempt by Ovechkin as Wayne Simmonds crashed the net and was able to jam one home to cut the Capitals lead to 2. After this goal would be scored chaos would ensue as when Tom Wilson thought he had a empty net goal to seal the deal for the Capitals, it would be ruled offsides after a Coach’s Challenge, but it would also result in Shayne Gostisbehere penalty that would upset the Flyers and result in Simmonds getting a 10 minute misconduct. However, the Capitals would not be on the powerplay long as Evgeny Kuznetsov would be called for hooking, and then while 4 on 4 with the goalie pulled Claude Giroux would score to inch the Flyers closer, but then Oshie would get the empty netter to ice this win for the Capitals.

    Washington Capitals (24-12-4 52pts) v. Detroit Red Wings (16-20-7 39pts)

    Game Recap:

To start this game, both the Washington Capitals and Detroit Red Wings would have a feeling out process for the first few minutes, but then the Capitals would get a dominate shift from their second line that would carry over to their top line the very next shift as Tom Wilson would get the Capitals on the board first after continuing sustaining the pressure in the Red Wings zone. Then both teams would continue with some back and forth until Jakub Vrana turns the puck over in the defensive zone which leads to Anthony Mantha tying the game at one for the Red Wings. Late in the period the Capitals would get a powerplay after Dylan Larkin tripped Alex Ovechkin in the neutral zone, but would do nothing with it, and will have 37 seconds of powerplay time to start the second period.

Going into the second period the Capitals looked sluggish and their powerplay time was wasted away. Also as a result of their sloppy play, the Red Wings would capitalize on a tic-tac-toe play as Filip Hronek would score his third of the season to give the Red Wings a 2-1 lead. The Capitals would then take back to back penalties in this very boring period. They would kill both penalties, and then would draw a penalty with 5 seconds left in the period.

The start of the third period was not very ideal as the Capitals could not generate on their powerplay to start the third period. However, it would be a smart play by Travis Boyd that would generate in him scoring to tie the game at 2 for the Capitals. The goal would breathe life into the Capitals and would force Niklas Kronwall to take a hooking penalty, and while the Capitals generated a few good looks, could not capitalize on yet another powerplay. The Capitals would continue the pressure and get an ugly knuckle puck goal from Michal Kempny that would hold as the game winner despite the barrage of penalties to both teams near the end of the game.

It was an ugly and boring win for the Capitals, but they ended their three game losing streak to end their road trip.

Michael and Aryan go in depth about the NHL All Star Game Rosters and about specific players that made it to the All Star Game, plus they discussed which game Alex Ovechkin should sit out for his one game suspension for not attending the All Star Weekend.

Michael and Aryan also go into an in depth conversation about Washington Capitals Tom Wilson and the stigma that follows him no matter what he does when he plays, plus also the double standard that there is in the NHL when it comes to discipline from Player Safety.

Plus Michael and Aryan talk about the Blues and what’s going wrong with them, the Dallas Stars and their CEO putting their top players on blast, the 2020 All Star Game, 2020 Winter Classic, and the other outdoor games that were announced during the Winter Classic earlier this week.

  • Tom Wilson and his Evolution

    Tom Wilson and his Evolution

Before last night’s game against the St. Louis Blues, there was a murmur around the city as the Washington Capitals prepared to take on the Blues. The reason was because the last time these two teams faced off, Capitals forward Tom Wilson drilled Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist with an illegal check to the head which resulted in a 20 game suspension, which would then be reduced to 14 games by a Neutral Arbitrator.

Going into this game the storyline was not about Dmitrij Jaskin facing off against his former team for the first time,  but that of Wilson coming to town to face the Blues since his hit on Sundqvist.

Going into last night’s game Blues sideline reporter for Fox Sports Midwest Andy Strickland got a moment to sit down with Wilson for a brief chat which revealed a few things.

The first thing we take away from this tweet is that Wilson has gotten the message from the League, and he is trying to adapt his game accordingly. It’s in his head “100%” while he is playing, and as a result is throwing fewer hits.

Secondly, he stated that he has gotten to the point where he would rather not through a hit in fear that it would be deemed illegal. Now I know a lot of people take issue with this part, but lets be honest here. The lines as to what is legal and what is not are blurred, and that is an issue.

When we saw Wilson get a match penalty against the New Jersey Devils last month for a hit he was trying to avoid it was clear afterwards that he was trying to get out of the way, and he did not make contact with the head, but then fast forward a few games later to when the Capitals faced of against the Vegas Golden Knights we see Ryan Reaves skating around and targeting Wilson with his hit from behind, granted he made no contact with Wilson head, but still purposely delivered a blindside hit that did injure Wilson.

However, there are other examples to where these lines are blurred that we can discuss another time, and we do on this week’s episode of TXHT that is out tomorrow morning.

Tom Wilson has proven since coming back from his suspension that he is trying to change his game for the better, and his numbers are showing such.

In 20 games played so far, Wilson has 11 goals, 8 assists for 19 points which is almost a point per game. Wilson is also a +11, and on special teams has 2 powerplay goals and 4 powerplay points along with one shorthanded goal. Wilson has amassed 48 shots on goal, for a 22.9% shooting percentage, and astonishingly has a 52.38% faceoff percentage.

Tom Wilson is on the rise. He answered the bell last night when he fought Robert Bortuzzo and did so a few games ago when he fought Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Jamie Oleksiak, but overall you can see that he is making an attempt to change his game and become more of a team player and contribute both offensively and defensively for the Capitals.

Tom Wilson will remain a polarizing figure, but if he continues to change for the better, he will definitely repair his image in the NHL.

    PP                 0/1                 0/1

    Analysis:

This was a very fast paced and very even first period for both teams. Both the Capitals and Sabres are doing a very good job of taking care of the neutral zone and keep the the slot area clear for their goalies.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to keep their feet moving and continue playing really good team defense against the Sabres. The Capitals also need to do a better job in reducing the amount of giveaways. They had 7 to Buffalo’s 4 in the first period.

    Second Period:

Capitals Penalty – 2:37 – Jonas Siegenthaler 2 minutes for Tripping

    Capitals SHG – 2:50 – Chandler Stephenson (3) from Nic Dowd (9)

Sabres Penalty – 7:12 – Evan Rodrigues 2 minutes for Holding

Sabres Penalty – 9:38 – Casey Mittelstadt 2 minutes for Holding

    PP                   0/2                  0/3

    Analysis:

This was another very good back and forth period between both teams. The Capitals were better than the Sabres on special teams as they held Buffalo shotless on their lone powerplay of the period, and the Capitals scored while shorthanded. The Capitals powerplay was buzzing on both opportunities and with some controversy to the first one.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to continue playing strong team defense and limit the scoring chances for the Sabres. Also the Capitals need to cut down on their giveaways. They almost shot themselves in the foot a few times this game with their giveaways.

    Third Period:

Sabres Goal – 9:01 – Johan Larsson (3) from Tage Thompson (3) and Rasmus Ristolainen (19)

Capitals Penalty – 9:24 – Matt Niskanen 2 minutes for Tripping

    Capitals Goal – 13:00 – Tom Wilson (10) from Evgeny Kuznetsov (25)

Sabres Penalty – 14:23 – Vladimir Sobotka 2 minutes for Hooking

Capitals Penalty – 17:48 – Nic Dowd 2 minutes for Tripping

    End of 3rd – BUF – 1         WAS – 2

    PP                 0/4                    0/4

    Analysis:

A good solid period. Both teams scored hard earned goals, but it would be the Capitals penalty kill that would upset the Sabres and not allow them to get any quality chances on the powerplay.

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals fall short against their rivals the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Capitals were lackluster with all five of their powerplay opportunities and the Penguins were able to make one count in four chances on the powerplay. The Capitals also were bit hard with some bad puck luck that saw one opportunity hit the post and another two getting on the goal line, but not cross the line. The Capitals now have to refocus and get back on track when they host the Buffalo Sabres on Friday night.

    Analysis:

A really fast paced and penalty filled start of the game for the Capitals and Penguins. Both team’s goalies have come up big, and have both generated some really good scoring chances.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to stay out of the box and continue forcing the play in the Penguins zone. Keep the legs moving and draw some penalties on the Penguins so they can give their powerplay a chance to make a difference.

    PP                   1/3                  0/3

    Analysis:

This has been a good game for the Capitals, but their powerplay has just been putrid this game. The Capitals have been good at even strength but their special teams needs improvement.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals have the luxury of starting the 3rd period with a full 2 minute powerplay, but they need to mix it up and take away the predictability. The Capitals are still in this, but they need to play smart and clean up their play in their own zone as well.

    Third Period:

Capitals Penalty – 4:13 – Matt Niskanen 2 minutes for Tripping

Penguins Penalty – 5:16 – Phil Kessel 2 minutes for Tripping

    Analysis:

A hard fought game from both teams, but the Capitals inability to capitalize on the powerplay opportunities, plus not having the puck luck on their side really hurt the Capitals in this game.

  • Player Safety and Why it needs to be fixed

Player Safety and Why it needs to be fixed

*Editor’s Note – It has become more and more evident that people’s team “loyalty” has been blinding them from the reality of the issue that the NHL has and that is it’s inconsistency in their Player Safety Department where Mike Matheson of the Florida Panthers will get suspended 2 games for his WWE style bodyslam of Vancouver Canucks rookie Elias Petterson, however, when Josh Morrissey of the Winnipeg Jets did the very same thing to Washington Capitals forward TJ Oshie, all he received was a fine for his actions. It is with this inconsistency that we here at TXHT take issue with, along with some of the blinded comments that we see on social media as well. In the article below, Steve does a wonderful job of breaking down this inconsistency. The uproar should not be about how our teams are getting screwed over by none calls and such. Our upraor should be about something more true, and that is the inconsistency of the NHL Department of Player Safety. – Michael

Over the last few years we’ve heard the NHL preach on the topic of player safety, everything they’ve been saying has been true. Players need to be protected from what could life altering injuries. But I think in the grand spectrum of things fans and the NHL alike has heard so much about Head shots that they’ve forgotten about plays or hits that aren’t head shots but are still suspendable and dangerous.  Over the last few weeks I’ve read comments on other blog articles with fans stating that it wasn’t a head shot so not a suspendable offence or that’s only interference and only a 2-minute penalty. So, let’s take a look this and let’s break it down in a few parts. First, we will take an in-depth look at the rules and what are meant by them, then we will look at some examples that have happened over the last few weeks and use those rules to make justified judgments on some hits. Finally, at the end I will just make a few comments on the whole subject at hand here.

    NHL Rules:

    Boarding:

Rule 41– “A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player who checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently or dangerously. The severity of the penalty, based upon the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee.” (NHL, 2018)

Boarding can be a very dangerous aspect of the game, according to the rules this is an suspendable offence and onus is on the player making the hit or push, while there should be some discretion used as to the position the player being pushed or hit puts himself in. The majority of the responsibility falls on the hitting/pushing player. Let’s make something very clear here one more time for everyone, this is a player safety issue and is suspendable and involved no head contact.

    Charging:

42.1 Charging – “A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player who skates or jumps into or charges an opponent in any manner. Charging shall mean the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice.” (NHL, 2018)

Charging is a vicious and egregious example of player safety in the NHL. No head contact is necessarily involved and once again the onus is on the player hitting. Jumping is also included in this rule as players tend to leave their feet when charging. As with the first one the severity is at the Referee discretion and supplemental discipline can be player safety department issue. Another issues that comes into play here is when a player does not have the puck or has passed the puck (the player has about 1 second to finish his check).

    Checking from Behind:

43.1 Checking from Behind – “A check from behind is a check delivered on a player who is not aware of the impending hit, therefore unable to protect or defend himself, and contact is made on the back part of the body. When a player intentionally turns his body to create contact with his back, no penalty shall be assessed.” (NHL, 2018)

Checking from behind is probably one of the more vicious plays in hockey. Once again the onus is on the hitting player and the discretion how of vicious is with the Referees. The Commissioner or the player safety department can overrule the decision and make a suspension. Once again this is vicious play that does not necessarily involve head contact.

    Illegal Head Contact:

48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – “A hit resulting in contact with an opponent’s head where the head was the main point of contact and such contact to the head was avoidable is not permitted. In determining whether contact with an opponent’s head was avoidable, the circumstances of the hit including the following shall be considered:

    1. Whether the player attempted to hit squarely through the opponent’s body and the head was not “picked” as a result of poor timing, poor angle of approach, or unnecessary extension of the body upward or outward.
    2. Whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position by assuming a posture that made head contact on an otherwise full body check unavoidable.
    3. Whether the opponent materially changed the position of his body or head immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit in a way that significantly contributed to the head contact” (NHL, 2018)

This is the one that everyone talks about rules are completely described the head must be the initial point of contact, as well as the circumstances where that can be changed are if a player changes position last second, opponent puts himself in a vulnerable position or if the head was not the main point of contact. Let me make something clear, just because something isn’t a head shot doesn’t mean it’s not suspendable because it could fall under another category

These are all the rules that apply to the situations of physical head shots or body contact. Head Butting and Kneeing were also possibilities but for the sake of this and the subject we will discuss those will be left out of this.

    Situations:

    1. Ryan Reaves Hit on Tom Wilson – Reaves Hit
    • So lets make some points about this hit
    • The hit is blind side
      • suspendable already
    • Is charging
      • the fact that he came from down below the net with no intent to get the puck but every intent to hit Wilson, the video does not show this but if you watch the game in it’s entirety you will see Reaves was coming from down low.
      • In fact, according to the rule book it was attempt to injure.
    • Side note was Reaves action after the hit, to mock and laugh at individual he injured by signing a picture of the hit with “ He ran into a lion”

No Suspension handed down here. This is one of the examples let’s look at one where the player was suspended.

    1. Tom Wilson hit on Oskar Sundqvist – Wilson Hit
    • Clear head contact
    • Blind side hit
    • Was in a glide, so is not charging
      • Wilson had no intent to retrieve the puck only to lay a big hit.
    • Difference: Sundqvist had the puck

Wilson received 20 games suspension. Now let me make it clear Wilson should have been suspended I’m not going to comment on the length of the suspension or anything to that. The Player Safety Department made their minds and I will not contest that.

    1. Matt Dumba Hit on Mikael Backlund – Dumba Hit
    • Clearly left his feet
      • Don’t believe it check the picture below
      • Dumba
    • Is Charging
      • Dumba came in from the blue line to intentionally hit Backlund with no intention to take the puck
    • Blind Side hit

Dumba was not suspended for this hit.

Now let’s talk about these 3 situations

    • Two were charging (Reaves and Dumba), which is suspendable
    • All three clearly went out of their way to hit the player with no intention to play the puck.
    • 1 involved head contact (Wilson)
    • 2 were not direct head contact but resulted in both Wilson and Backlund being out with concussions (Reaves & Dumba)
    • 1 left his feet (Dumba)

Weird thing about it is that only one player was suspended. 20 games for Head contact and for having a history. Meanwhile both Reaves and Dumba committed offences that by the Leagues own rules are suspendable offences. Dumba with 56 seconds left in the game decided to run in from the blue with no regard for the puck and destroy Backlund causing injury, leaving his feet as well..  While Reaves came from down low in the Capitals zone and did the same thing to Wilson, having no regard for the puck just to cause pain.

The definition of body check is to separate body from puck. With the intention to gather the puck and use it to better your teams game. In no way is there an intention to hurt, or cause serious damage to a player with no regard for that players well-being.

Some people will say why are you sticking up for that scum Wilson, Well see here’s the thing, fans of the sport care for the sport and not their own teams over the sport. If your going to call Wilson’s hits despicable then you better call every hit that is suspendable by the law of the rules the same way. The fact that people in the league would rather stand up for someone who had an intent to hurt someone and yet call someone else who did the same thing scum, is quite hypocritical.

    Final thoughts:

I think NHL fans need to get off their high horse and come back to loving the game rather than a team. The rules state very clearly what is legal and what is not. It’s more than just head shots. It’s how you use your body to attack other players. Separating from the puck is fine but a hit with no regard for the puck is wrong no matter if there is contact to head or not. All 3 should have been suspended.

NHL needs to get their act together and start following what they write into a rule book. Stop showing that player safety is really a complete joke to the NHL.

Former Washington Capital Nate Schmidt would net the late game winner and an empty netter to seal the deal for the Vegas Golden Knights against the Capitals, making their return to Vegas an unsuccessful one. Analysis:

This was an ok period for the Capitals. They’ve gotten themselves into penalty trouble which allowed Vegas to take the 1-0 lead and a powerplay to start the second period. The Capitals are not doing well in the faceoff circle and they are being physically dominated by the Golden Knights in the hits category. However, they have responded well and got a good goal from Jakub Vrana to tie the game.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to kill off this penalty, and then stay out of the box and stop giving the Golden Knights opportunities. Also the Capitals need to do a much better job in faceoff circle and pick up their physical play as they were horribly dominated in hits.

    Analysis:

This was a better period for the Capitals as they were better in the faceoff circle and they also were able to get the lone goal of the period. However, they were still dominated in the hits category, plus they did not do much with their lone powerplay which was a 5 minute one.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to keep on pressing the play, and play a full 20 minutes. Also the Capitals need to do a much better job with their powerplay opportunities.

    Third Period:

    Golden Knights Goal – 2:33 – Pierre-Edouard Bellemare (4) from Brayden McNabb (3) and Nate Schmidt (2)

Golden Knights Goal – 2:49 – Cody Eakin (11) from Oscar Lindberg (2) and Deryk Engelland (4)

    Analysis:

This was a letdown of a period for the Capitals. They gave up two goals in a span of 16 seconds in the first 3 minutes of the period, and did not play with much gusto throughout the period.

  • Progress Report – Tom Wilson 10 Games In

Progress Report – Tom Wilson 10 Games In

On September 30th, 2018 Tom Wilson did an illegal check to the head of St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist, which resulted to Wilson being suspended for 20 games by the NHL Department of Player Safety on October 3rd. After NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman upheld the suspension, neutral arbitrator Shyam Das would reduce Wilson’s suspension to 14 games after having already missed 16 games. Wilson would return to the lineup immediately on November 13th for the Washington Capitals against the Minnesota Wild.

Upon his return Wilson made an impact right away scoring a goal and subsequently getting a goalie interference  call at the same time.

After that Wilson would fight Marcus Foligno to help guide the Capitals to a 5-2 victory over the Wild. Then the next night in Winnipeg Wilson would be held off of the score sheet as the Capitals would fall to the Jets 3-1. However, in both games Wilson averaged 16:30 minutes in ice time, and registered two shots combined with 7 penalty minutes and was Even in +/-.

Then in his next eight games Tom Wilson showed why the Capitals drafted him 16th overall in 2012, as he would explode on the first line with Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin, and at times with Lars Eller. In these next eight games Wilson would register 7 goals, 6 assists for 13 points which also include Wilson being on a 6 game goal streak and an 8 game point streak, which are both active currently. Also Wilson would register 4 multi-point games and one 2 goal game. On special teams Wilson would also register 2 goals and 3 points on the powerplay, and 1 shorthanded goal. Also in every game, with the exception of the November 30th game against New Jersey which we will talk about in a moment, Wilson would average over 20 minutes of playing time and 2 plus shots a game.

In the span of these eight games the Capitals would go 7-1-0 with all seven wins happening consecutively. In all 10 games that Wilson has played in the Capitals have an 8-2-0 record, and also saw their penalty kill improve by 10.2% from October (going into their game on December 2nd versus Anaheim). Plus the Capitals as a whole have played a much better as a team.

However, it would be a miss if we didn’t have a little controversy involving Tom Wilson as on November 30th against the New Jersey Devils, Wilson would unfortunately get attention for all of the wrong reasons. After scoring a shorthanded goal 8 seconds into the 2nd period, Wilson would be tracking his man into the Capitals zone and would lay a hit on Devils forward Brett Seney.

The play would result in Wilson getting a Match penalty for an Illegal hit to the Head, however, as it would be shown in the still we were able to grab you can see that Wilson did not make contact with Seney’s head at all.

Also as seen on the play Wilson does make an effort to try to avoid contact.

Of course the big reason that this is controversial is because it is Tom Wilson. Plus he was in his 9th game back from suspension and we all know that Wilson is under a microscope by the League. Luckily for Wilson the Department of Player Safety decided that there would be no supplementary discipline as it was deemed that Wilson did not make contact with the head.

Outside of this one little (big) blip for Tom Wilson, he has been proving why the Capitals drafted him in the first round, and with his role on the team, he has helped turn the ship around after a slow start to the season. If Wilson keeps playing the way he has been and stays away from the bad hits, and keeps playing smart, Wilson will be setting all new career highs this season.
