    Carolina Hurricanes v. Washington Capitals

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals begin their Stanley Cup defense at home against the Carolina Hurricanes, and the start of the game would see the Capitals weather the storm from the Hurricanes for the first half of the period followed by Nicklas Backstrom going top shelf on Petr Mrazek on the first shot of the game for the Capitals to make it 1-0. Then Justin Faulk would be called for high sticking, and on the powerplay Evgeny Kuznetsov would do a beautiful pass across to slot to Backstrom for his second of the game. The Hurricanes would not do themselves any favors though as Micheal Ferland would be called for interference and with a mad scramble Alex Ovechkin would net his first of the playoffs to make it 3-0 goinf into the first intermission.

In the second period both teams would trade scoring opportunities, and some penalties as well. While the Capitals would kill their lone penalty early in the period, Carolina would give the Capitals two more powerplay opportunities. However, this time the Hurricanes would keep the Capitals off the score board while on the penalty kill.

In the third period the Capitals would get some really good scoring opportunities to start the period, but Petr Mrazek would stand tall to keep the deficit to three. Then Andrei Svechnikov would score back to back goals to cut the Capitals lead to one in a span of two minutes and nineteen seconds. The Capitals would then get themselves into penalty problems, but would successfully kill both penalties. Then Lars Eller would score the empty netter to seal the deal for the Capitaks as they take the 1-0 series lead.

    Game Recap:

In their final meeting of the regular season the Washington Capitals head down to Tampa Bay with hopes of grounding the League leading Lightning. Early in the game it would be the Capitals gaining the advantage as Tom Wilson would feed Nicklas Backstrom for his 20th of the season to give the Capitals a 1-0 lead. Then TJ Oshie would net a pair goals both at even strength and on the powerplay to give the Capitals a 3-0 lead going into the first intermission.

In the second period the Capitals would continue their strong play as Dmitry Orlov would put forth a strong individual effort to feed Backstrom for his second goal of the game to grow the Capitals lead to four. However, in the final minutes of the second period, JT Miller would tip in a Mikhail Sergachev point shot to cut the Capitals lead to three going into the second intermission.

In the third period the Lightning would cut the Capitals lead to two when Tyler Johnson would net his 28th of the season. After that the fireworks would explode as Brooks Orpik and Anthony Cirelli would drop the gloves followed by a heavyweight tilt between Tom Wilson and Erik Cernak. Then the “Great Eight” Alex Ovechkin would score his 50th of the season, and then on a Nikita Kucherov penalty, Ovechkin would net his 51st of the season to give the Capitals a commanding 6-2 lead. However, in the final minute Nic Dowd would take a penalty for hooking and Kucherov would score to cut the Capitals lead to three, but it would be too little too late for the Lightning as the Capitals would go on to win 6 to 3.

    Game Recap:

As the Washington Capitals wind down their regular season with the playoffs in the horizon, the Capitals take on prospective first round opponent Carolina Hurricanes in their first game of a back to back with them. For the second period, you would have another fast paced period that saw the Capitals generate some better scoring chances than they had in the first, but it would be Dougie Hamilton of the Hurricanes who would score while having an extra attacker on the ice during a delayed penalty to tie the game at one.

In the third period it would be the Capitals on the attack against the Hurricanes as the Capitals would regain their lead when Tom Wilson would feed Alex Ovechkin for a one timer to score his 49th of the season. Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals head to Tampa Bay for the first time since eliminating the Lightning in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals, however, it would be Lighting getting some early revenge as the would work a turnover into an odd man advantage to give Tyler Johnson his 26th goal of the season. Then less than two minutes later, Alex Killorn would score to give the Lightning a 2-0 lead, but the Capitals would respond as they would get a lucky bounce resulting in a John Carlson bomb to cut Tampa’s lead to one. However, Killorn would force his way to the net through Nick Jensen, and then get his own rebound to net his second of the game and give the Lightning their two goal lead back. To end the period it would be a parade of penalties, but it would be the Lightning getting to start the second period with an abbreviated 5 on 3 powerplay.

The Capitals would start the second period killing off Tampa’s two man advantage, and then on a Nikita Kucherov interference penalty it would be Alex Ovechkin netting his 47th of the season on the powerplay to cut Tampa’s lead to one again.

To start the third period the Lightning would kill the Capitals remaining powerplay time then on a weak goal it would be Erik Cernak scoring his 4th of the season to give Tampa a 4-2 lead. However, later in the period Alex Oveckin would net his second of the game to bring the Capitals back within one. But it would not be enough for the Capitals as Tampa would get a pair of empty net goals from Killorn and Yanni Gourde to ice this game for the Lightning 6-3.

    Washington Capitals (38-21-7 83pts) v. Philadelphia Flyers (32-26-8 72pts)

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals would continue their road trip with a short train trip to Philadelphia to take on the Flyers, and in the early stages of the game both teams would share chances in a track style back and forth, but it would be the Capitals striking first as Alex Ovechkin would feed the puck to Tom Wilson while on his knees for Wilson’s 19th goal of the season. Then later in the period while going down the wing Brett Connolly would rip a shot past Brian Elliott that would seem to have hit the crossbar, but during the TV timeout the play would be reviewed in Toronto and deemed a goal as Connolly got the puck past Elliott and hit the goal cam with the puck completely crossing the line thus giving the Capitals a 2-0 lead going into the second intermission.

To start the second period the Capitals would bring the domination as early in the period while on their first powerplay of the game it would be an Ovechkin snipe from the circles that would go five hole on Elliott. Then mere minutes later it would be Andre Burakovsky with a beautiful snipe to chase Elliott from the net and bring in Cam Talbot, but the Capitals would welcome him with that same domination as Nicklas Backstrom would net the first shot against Talbot to make this a 5-0 game. The Capitals would primarily control the play the rest of the period, but with 11.8 seconds left in the period Philippe Myers would score his first career goal to get the Flyers on the board.

To start the third period it would be the Flyers to get on the board ten seconds into the period as Claude Giroux would net his 20th of the season. The Flyers would pick up the play after scoring their second goal and as a result the Capitals would start chasing the game to which would then lead to an Andrew MacDonald point shot to get tipped by Scott Laughton to make this a 5-3 game, and have the Flyers trail the Capitals by only two goals.

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals head to the Big Apple to take on the New York Rangers for an early afternoon matinee, but it would be the Rangers striking first as Chris Kreider would pick off a Dmitry Orlov pass and feed it to Ryan Strome for a quick 1-0 lead. However, the lead would not last long as Carl Hagelin would attack the net and recover his own rebound on a broken play to score his first goal as a Capital to tie the game. Then after some back and forth for the two teams, it would be Andre Burakovsky netting his ninth of the season to give the Capitals the 2-1 lead.

In a lackluster second period that featured a couple huge saves on both sides it would be Pavel Buchnevich to finally get one to tie the game at two for the Rangers.

In the third period not a lot of action would take place in what was a quick moving period. We would require extra time, but nothing would be decided in the five minute frame. Then in the shootout, it would be a controversial play by Rangers goalie Alexandar Georgiev that would allow Alex Ovechkin to be credited with the game winning shootout goal when he would throw his stick at Ovechkin to prevent the shot on goal.

    Washington Capitals (36-21-7 79pts) v. New York Islanders (37-19-7 81pts)

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals head to Nassau Coliseum for the first time to take on the New York Islanders, and it would be the Islanders that would get on the board early as Tom Kuhnhackl would score in the opening minutes of the game on a very casual breakaway due to a blown offside by the officials. Then Alex Ovechkin would take a very blatant interference penalty, but the Capitals would kill the penalty off.

A very uneventful second period outside of a Brett Connolly penalty, and some heavy hits on both ends of the ice.

Unlike the second period, the third period would be fast and hectic in the first half of the period. The Capitals would strike early as Jakub Vrana would battle in front of the net and knock in the rebound to tie the game at one, then right away on the powerplay it would be Alex Ovechkin batting the puck and getting a lucky bounce to get his 45th of the season and give the Capitals a 2-1 lead. This would be followed with 3 penalties that would start with a Capitals powerplay, and then end in a Capitals powerplay. Then to ice the game for the Capitals, with Thomas Griess pulled TJ Oshie would clear the puck out of the zone and without paying attention Josh Bailey accidentally shot the puck into his own net to give the Capitals a 3-1 victory.

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals come into Anaheim looking to crash the Ducks party on Scott Niedermayer’s jersey retirement, and that they would on an early powerplay thanks to a Hampus Lindholm tripping penalty. John Carlson would find Alex Ovechkin in his office for the one timer and his 40th goal of the season to give the Capitals the 1-0 lead.

The Capitals however would be dominated by the Ducks throughout most of the period as they would out shoot the Capitals 18-6 in the first period.

    https://twitter.com/AnaheimDucks/status/1097330633578172417

The Ducks would find the back of the net after an offensive zone win. Brandon Montour would shoot the puck from the point and Adam Henrique would get his stick on the puck to deflect it past Braden Holtby and tie the game at one. Continued sloppy play in their own zone would hurt the Capitals as the Ducks would take advantage of a defensive breakdown and Jakob Silfverberg would tap in a Henrique pass for the 2-1 lead. But the Capitals would not go away as John Carlson would shoot a bomb from the point to tie the game at two.

The Ducks would start the period with some carry over powerplay time from a very questionable Tom Wilson goalie interference penalty, and would capitalize 37 seconds into the period as Adam Henrique would score his second of the game for the 3-2 lead. Then on another powerplay, the Ducks would get a goal from Corey Perry to make it a 4-2 lead on his first goal of the 2018-19 season. Jakob Silfverberg would score his second of the game to give the Ducks a 5-2 lead. The Capitals would fall flat to finish this game, and now face the Los Angeles Kings for the second game of their back to back.

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals look to end their season long six game homestand with a victory, and it would be an early penalty by Michael Amadio that would give the Capitals the first power play opportunity of the game. The Capitals would not need much time as they would swarm the Los Angeles Kings as Alex Ovechkin would score his 38th goal of the season for the 1-0 lead. However, the Kings would respond quickly when Derek Forbort made an amazing pass to Austin Wagner to tie the game at one. The Capitals would get another power play opportunity when Alec Martinez would be called for holding, but the Capitals would not convert. The Kings would then get their first power play opportunity when Evgeny Kuznetsov would be galled for hooking, but the Capitals would hold the Kings shotless on the power play. The Capitals would eventually get the lead back when Brett Connolly would get his own rebound and roof it over Jonathan Quick, but it would be a Dmitry Orlov hooking penalty that would give the Kings a chance to tie the game up at two as Tyler Toffoli would score on the powerplay.

The Capitals would start the period by killing off the late Brett Connolly hooking call, but they would get hemmed into their own zone as the Kings would tire the Capitals and gain the lead for the first time this game when Oscar Fantenberg would blast a one timer for his second goal of the season. However the Capitals would respond quickly as Evgeny Kuznetsov would score off of a Tom Wilson rebound to tie the game at three a piece. The Capitals would then get the lead back as they would crash the net and create chaos for Quick and the Kings defense as Christian Djoos would poke the puck with one hand on his stick for his first goal of the season. the Capitals would not let up there as Michal Kempny and Jakub Vrana would connect to get Quick out of position and Vrana his 17th of the season.

For the third period both teams would play a more contained style of game that would feature both Austin Wagner and Evgeny Kuznetsov scoring their second goal of the game for their respective teams. However, it would be the Capitals holding on and winning 6-4 to end their six game homestand with a 4-1-1 record.
