Trade Deadline Prospecting: A Possible Deal Between the Capitals and Kings?

Oh NHL Trade Deadline how you keep us on our toes. For those who didn’t know, earlier this afternoon the Washington Capitals placed forward Devante Smith-Pelly on waivers, albeit with some confusion because the original plan was for forward Dmitrij Jaskin to be placed on waivers, but obviously it became Smith-Pelly instead to be placed on waivers.

Now with that said, we did speculate in our last post that this is most likely the beginnings of some other moves based off of the comments that Head Coach Todd Reirden made at the Capitals practice.

Knowing what we know now, some more news, more like speculation, has come out about a potential trade in the works between the Capitals and the Los Angeles Kings thanks to a series of tweets from TSN Insider Bob McKenzie.

In McKenzie’s tweets he mentions three names and they are all veteran depth forwards Carl Hagelin, Trevor Lewis, and Kyle Clifford. Of the three Hagelin is the only one that will be a pure rental (Unrestricted Free Agent at the end of this season), whereas both Clifford and Lewis both have one year left on their current deals. In regards to Cap hits, Hagelin has a $3.5mil Cap hit for the remainder of this season, while Lewis is at $2mil a season, and Clifford is at $1.6mil per season. So looking at the Cap hits alone, space needs to be made because the Capitals are really tight on the Cap.

    Per CapFriendly

As we can see in the graphic above the Capitals are really tight on the Cap and need to shed some salary in order to make a trade possible. Hence putting Smith-Pelly on waivers, and also the possibility that Jaskin will be a part of whatever trade may take place.

Now let’s get back to the three players Bob McKenzie named and take a closer look at them. Key things that the Capitals will most likely be looking at is who will be the best fit, and can help the Capitals as they try to win their second consecutive Stanley Cup.

    Kings Blues Hockey
The Kings’ Carl Hagelin (62) looks to pass during a game against the St. Louis Blues Monday, Nov. 19, 2018, in St. Louis. (AP Photo/Jeff Roberson)

    Carl Hagelin:

Hagelin, who is in his 8th NHL season and first with the Los Angeles Kings, was a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Stanley Cup teams in 2016 and 2017, and was traded to the Kings by the Penguins earlier this season. This season Hagelin has struggled to produce. In 16 games with the Penguins he scored one goal and two assists for three points, then after being traded to the Kings he would have a rough start and get injured, but in 22 games with the Kings he has scored one goal and four assists for five points. So Hagelin has been struggling this season. One thing I will say about Hagelin is that he is a much better player in the Eastern Conference. His style of play is much better suited for it. We saw him be successful with the New York Rangers, then struggle with the Anaheim Ducks only to be traded to the Penguins and then find success with them. I think that’s what Hagelin needs, and that is to come back to the East, and the Capitals could be a good fit for him.

    Trevor-Lewis-22.jpg
    Trevor Lewis (www.calisportsnews.com)

    Trevor Lewis:

Lewis, who is in his 11th NHL season with the Kings, has only played in 21 games this season scoring two goals and three assists for five points. He was on both of the Kings’ Stanley Cup teams in 2012 and 2014. However, Lewis has not been utilized much this season, and a change of scenery could be very beneficial for him. Lewis does have a Cap hit of $2mil and has one year remaining on his deal. Honest opinion, I wouldn’t trade for Trevor Lewis.

    Kyle Clifford - Kings
Kyle Clifford (Stephen R. Sylvanie-USA TODAY Sports)

    Kyle Clifford:

Clifford, who is in his ninth NHL season with the Los Angeles Kings, has played in 49 games where he has 7 goals and 6 assists for 13 points this season. Clifford is also a member of both Stanley Cup teams in 2012 and 2014 so he knows how to win in the playoffs. He is primarily a bottom six forward who you can move around to mix things up. Carrying a Cap hit of $1.6mil, Clifford is  a more economical choice with Smith-Pelly clearing or being claimed via waivers, but he does have one year left on his contract.

Now of course this is all speculation and we won’t know truly what will happen until maybe as early as tomorrow afternoon once 12p hits and we learn Devante Smith-Pelly’s fate. Personally if the Capitals make a trade with the Kings does happen I would like to see Carl Hagelin come to the Capitals. He is someone that can play in our Top 9 when needed to, and he has had recent playoff success winning back to back Cups with Pittsburgh, but that’s me though.

  • Capitals Waive Smith-Pelly

    Capitals Waive Smith-Pelly

The Washington Capitals placed forward Devante Smith Pelly on waivers this afternoon in what was a confusing time for the Capitals. Earlier reports stated that it would be forward Dmitrij Jaskin would be put on waivers as he was not going to practice with the team this morning. However midway through practice Smith-Pelly would leave the ice and then placed on waivers instead as first reported by Elliotte Friedman.

    https://twitter.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/1098268240197967873

When asked for the reasoning for the change, Head Coach Todd Reirden stated that it was an “organizational decision” to make the switch, and that other things behind the scenes are in play.

    https://twitter.com/FriedgeHNIC/status/1098278991855841280

This begs the question with the NHL Trade Deadline this upcoming Monday what moves General Manager Brian MacLellan could be making. Was an offer given to MacLellan for Jaskin, or could this be a move to free up some Salary Cap space to make another move. Only time will tell as teams have until noon tomorrow to put in a claim on Smith-Pelly before he clears waivers and be eligible to be sent down to Hershey in the AHL.

Gameday Preview – 2/18/2019 – Washington Capitals v. Los Angeles Kings

    Washington Capitals (32-20-7 71pts) v. Los Angeles Kings (23-29-6 52pts)

    Time: 1030p EST

Station: NBC Sports Washington and Fox Sports West

    Preview:

The Washington Capitals continue their six game road trip as they head 15 minutes from Anaheim to Los Angeles as they take on the Kings who have lost their past four games. The Capitals will be looking to bounce back from the lackluster 5-2 loss to the Ducks last night as they look to have a better performance against the Kings. The Capitals will be without forward TJ Oshie who was injured last night against Anaheim.

    Washington Capitals:

    Projected Lineup:

Alex Ovechkin — Evgeny Kuznetsov — Tom Wilson

Jakub Vrana — Nicklas Backstrom — Travis Boyd

Andre Burakovsky — Lars Eller — Brett Connolly

Dmitrij Jaskin — Chandler Stephenson — Devante Smith-Pelly

    Michal Kempny — John Carlson

    Dmitry Orlov — Matt Niskanen

    Brooks Orpik — Christian Djoos

    Pheonix Copley

    Braden Holtby

    Scratched: Madison Bowey, Nic Dowd

    Injured: T.J. Oshie (upper body)

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Show up and play a full 60 minutes

The Capitals need to show up and play a full 60 minutes against the Kings. The Capitals disappeared after Alex Ovechkin scored and it came back to bite them. Especially against one of the worst teams in the league. The Capitals play a struggling Kings team, and the Capitals need to win this game.

    Los Angeles Kings:

    Projected Lineup:

Alex Iafallo — Anze Kopitar — Dustin Brown

Brendan Leipsic — Jeff Carter — Tyler Toffoli

Carl Hagelin — Adrian Kempe — Ilya Kovalchuk

Kyle Clifford — Trevor Lewis — Austin Wagner

    Derek Forbort — Drew Doughty

    Oscar Fantenberg — Paul LaDue

    Jack Campbell

    Jonathan Quick

    Scratched: Michael Amadio

Injured: Alec Martinez (upper body), Sean Walker (upper body), Jonny Brodzinski (shoulder)

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Get a jump on the Capitals

The Kings may be struggling, but last night the Ducks gave the Kings the blueprint to beating the Capitals. The Kings need to take it to the Capitals and force the pace of the game in their favor.

    February 18th, 2019 — News and Notes

Today is Monday, February 18th, 2019, and these are your news and notes.

There were six contests in NHL action yesterday.

    PITTSBURGH 6, NY Rangers 5

The Pittsburgh Penguins would squeak away from the New York Rangers with a 6-5 win, thanks to two goals from Kris Letang and Evgeni Malkin.

New York’s Mats Zuccarello would score two goals of his own in the contest as well.

    St. Louis 4, MINNESOTA 0

The St. Louis Blues would net their 10th consecutive win and their third straight shutout with a 4-0 win over the Minnesota Wild yesterday afternoon.

    NEW JERSEY 4, Buffalo 1

New Jersey’s Kyle Palmieri would have two assists and a goal in this contest to help the Devils down the Buffalo Sabres 4-1.

    https://twitter.com/NJDevils/status/1097308128708837376

    Philadelphia 3, DETROIT 1

The Philadelphia Flyers would end the home-and-home series with a set of back-to-back wins over the Detroit Red Wings with a 3-1 win last night.

Philadelphia’s Oskar Lindbolm would have a two goal game in this contest for the Flyers.

    FLORIDA 6, Montreal 3

Florida Panthers Aleksander Barkov would have a hat trick in this contest as the Panthers would double up the Montreal Canadiens by the score of 6-3.

Montreal’s Max Domi would have a two goal effort but it would not be enough as the Canadiens fall to a record of 31-21-7 and are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the two wild card spots in the Eastern Conference standings.

    ANAHEIM 5, Washington 2

In this contest, Washington Capitals Alex Ovechkin would score his 40th goal on the season but it would not be enough as the Capitals would fall to the Anaheim Ducks 5-2.

On Anaheim’s side, this win would be their fourth win in the last 24 contests.

Two records were also broken by Ducks players in this contest.  Cam Fowler is now the franchise leader for assists by a defenceman and Ryan Miller is now the the leader for most wins by a U.S.-born goaltender in NHL history.

Game Recap – 2/17/2019 – Washington Capitals v. Anaheim Ducks

    Washington Capitals (32-19-7 71pts) v. Anaheim Ducks (22-27-9 53pts)

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals come into Anaheim looking to crash the Ducks party on Scott Niedermayer’s jersey retirement, and that they would on an early powerplay thanks to a Hampus Lindholm tripping penalty. John Carlson would find Alex Ovechkin in his office for the one timer and his 40th goal of the season to give the Capitals the 1-0 lead.

The Capitals however would be dominated by the Ducks throughout most of the period as they would out shoot the Capitals 18-6 in the first period.

    https://twitter.com/AnaheimDucks/status/1097330633578172417

The Ducks would find the back of the net after an offensive zone win. Brandon Montour would shoot the puck from the point and Adam Henrique would get his stick on the puck to deflect it past Braden Holtby and tie the game at one. Continued sloppy play in their own zone would hurt the Capitals as the Ducks would take advantage of a defensive breakdown and Jakob Silfverberg would tap in a Henrique pass for the 2-1 lead. But the Capitals would not go away as John Carlson would shoot a bomb from the point to tie the game at two.

The Ducks would start the period with some carry over powerplay time from a very questionable Tom Wilson goalie interference penalty, and would capitalize 37 seconds into the period as Adam Henrique would score his second of the game for the 3-2 lead. Then on another powerplay, the Ducks would get a goal from Corey Perry to make it a 4-2 lead on his first goal of the 2018-19 season. Jakob Silfverberg would score his second of the game to give the Ducks a 5-2 lead. The Capitals would fall flat to finish this game, and now face the Los Angeles Kings for the second game of their back to back.

    Washington Capitals:

    Projected Lineup:

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Strike fast, strike often

The Capitals need to strike fast on a prone Ducks team that has only won two of their last ten games, and now has the general manager Bob Murray behind the bench. If the Capitals can get the first goal, it will push the Ducks onto their heels, and they will struggle.

    Washington Capitals (31-18-7 69pts) v. Columbus Blue Jackets (31-20-3 65pts)

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals would come out flat against the Columbus Blue Jackets, and put themselves into penalty trouble as the Blue Jackets dominated the Capitals in the first period. However, Braden Holtby would hold down the fort and keep this a 0-0 game.

In another lackluster period for the Capitals, the Blue Jackets would get the lone goal on a 3 on 1 break against the Capitals with Anthony Duclair scoring his 11th of the season. Capitals would be dominated in almost every aspect of the game. Blue Jackets through 40 minutes have held the Capitals to 7 shots and 9 faceoff wins.

The Capitals would play a better third period, but Sergei Bobrovsky would be lights out as he would shut out the Capitals surge, and the Blue Jackets would get goals from Nick Foligno and Artemi Panarin to seal the deal for the Blue Jackets.

    Preview:

The Washington Capitals hit the road for the first time since returning from the bye week as they take on Metropolitan Division rival Columbus Blue Jackets for their second game of their back to back, and first game of their six game road trip. The Capitals are coming off a 6-4 win last night over the Los Angeles Kings.

The last time these two teams faced off the Blue Jackets would win in overtime and mock Evgeny Kuznetsov’s “Bird” celebration. The motivation is there, as well as the fire in this rivalry.

    Washington Capitals:

    Projected Lineup:

Alex Ovechkin — Evgeny Kuznetsov — Tom Wilson

Jakub Vrana — Nicklas Backstrom — T.J. Oshie

Andre Burakovsky — Lars Eller — Brett Connolly

Chandler Stephenson — Nic Dowd — Devante Smith-Pelly

    Michal Kempny — John Carlson

    Dmitry Orlov — Matt Niskanen

    Brooks Orpik — Christian Djoos

    Braden Holtby

    Pheonix Copley

Scratched: Madison Bowey, Dmitrij Jaskin, Travis Boyd

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Be consistent all 60 minutes

The Capitals need to be consistent for a full 60 minutes if they look to defeat the Blue Jackets. If the Capitals can continue a steady pace throughout, they will have a legitimate chance of winning.

    Columbus Blue Jackets:

    Projected Lineup:

Artemi Panarin — Pierre-Luc Dubois — Cam Atkinson

Nick Foligno — Boone Jenner — Josh Anderson

Anthony Duclair — Alexander Wennberg — Oliver Bjorkstrand

Markus Hannikainen — Riley Nash — Lukas Sedlak

    Seth Jones — Ryan Murray

    Zach Werenski — David Savard

    Scott Harrington — Markus Nutivaara

    Sergei Bobrovsky

    Joonas Korpisalo

    Scratched: Dean Kukan, Eric Robinson

    Injured: Brandon Dubinsky (hip)

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Rattle the Capitals

The Blue Jackets mocked Evgeny Kuznetsov last time these two teams faced with hopes of rattling the team, but to no affect. An early lead though, that can rattle the Capitals.

    Los Angeles Kings (23-27-5 51pts) v. Washington Capitals (30-18-7 67pts)

    Game Recap:

The Washington Capitals look to end their season long six game homestand with a victory, and it would be an early penalty by Michael Amadio that would give the Capitals the first power play opportunity of the game. The Capitals would not need much time as they would swarm the Los Angeles Kings as Alex Ovechkin would score his 38th goal of the season for the 1-0 lead. However, the Kings would respond quickly when Derek Forbort made an amazing pass to Austin Wagner to tie the game at one. The Capitals would get another power play opportunity when Alec Martinez would be called for holding, but the Capitals would not convert. The Kings would then get their first power play opportunity when Evgeny Kuznetsov would be galled for hooking, but the Capitals would hold the Kings shotless on the power play. The Capitals would eventually get the lead back when Brett Connolly would get his own rebound and roof it over Jonathan Quick, but it would be a Dmitry Orlov hooking penalty that would give the Kings a chance to tie the game up at two as Tyler Toffoli would score on the powerplay.

The Capitals would start the period by killing off the late Brett Connolly hooking call, but they would get hemmed into their own zone as the Kings would tire the Capitals and gain the lead for the first time this game when Oscar Fantenberg would blast a one timer for his second goal of the season. However the Capitals would respond quickly as Evgeny Kuznetsov would score off of a Tom Wilson rebound to tie the game at three a piece. The Capitals would then get the lead back as they would crash the net and create chaos for Quick and the Kings defense as Christian Djoos would poke the puck with one hand on his stick for his first goal of the season. the Capitals would not let up there as Michal Kempny and Jakub Vrana would connect to get Quick out of position and Vrana his 17th of the season.

For the third period both teams would play a more contained style of game that would feature both Austin Wagner and Evgeny Kuznetsov scoring their second goal of the game for their respective teams. However, it would be the Capitals holding on and winning 6-4 to end their six game homestand with a 4-1-1 record.
