PWHL Stars of the Week – Montreal Rules

Today the Professional Women’s Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of January 13th through 19th.

First Star – Erin Ambrose (D – MON)

Ambrose assisted on five of the six goals the Victoire scored across their two games for the week. Friday, in Montréal’s 4-2 victory over Minnesota at Place Bell, Ambrose had three assists – doubling the season’s total she brought to the contest and coming within one of matching her career-high four-assist game, also against Minnesota, last April 18. On Sunday, before a PWHL Takeover Tour™ sell-out crowd of 18,259 at Videotron Centre in Québec City, Ambrose set up both goals in Montréal’s 2-1 triumph over Ottawa. The Victoire power play went 4-for-8 (50%) for the week, and Ambrose had assists on each of the scores, including both game-winners – by Marie-Philip Poulin at 5:52 of the second period against Minnesota and by Kati Tabin at 13:47 of the third period against Ottawa. With eight assists for the season (five of them on the power play), Ambrose is tied with Toronto defender Renata Fast and Minnesota forward Taylor Heise for second in the PWHL in that category; Minnesota’s Claire Thompson leads with 10. At plus-7, Ambrose is tied with Montréal teammate Mikyla Grant-Mentis for the PWHL’s top ranking.

Second Star – Abby Boreen (F – MON)

Boreen scored twice – the first multiple-goal game of her PWHL career – in Friday’s victory over Minnesota and added an assist against Ottawa. She drove down the right wing and slammed in a 10-foot shot off a pass from Jennifer Gardiner to open the scoring at 8:05 of the first period against her former team, then she boosted Montreal’s lead to 4-1 at 10:22 of the third period, barging into the goalmouth to bury the rebound of a Catherine Dubois shot. Sunday against Ottawa, she had the secondary assist on the game-winner by Tabin. With 5-3—8 for the season, Boreen is tied for the PWHL lead in goals and joins Ambrose in the scoring lead for the first-place Victoire, who used their two victories to create a three-point lead over the Frost. Boreen, a 24-year-old from Somerset, Wisconsin, also has surpassed the totals of goals and points (4-1—5) she compiled in nine regular-season games with Minnesota last season.

Third Star – Kendall Coyne Schofield (F – MIN)

The Frost scored four goals across two games last week and Coyne Schofield played a role in three of the tallies. The Minnesota captain had a goal and an assist in Wednesday’s 3-2 shootout loss to the New York Sirens at Prudential Center, scoring at 1:32 of the second period to pull the Frost even at 1-1 and setting up the goal by Mellissa Channell-Watkins that provided a temporary 2-1 lead at 10:39 of the third. In addition to collecting her third multi-point performance of the season, Coyne Schofield also led all skaters with five shots in the contest and leads the league in the category with 38. The 32-year-old native of Palos Heights, Illinois also scored to pull the Frost within 3-1 at 17:22 of the second period in their 4-2 loss to Montréal. With points in eight of her 12 games this season and 5-6—11 for the campaign, Coyne Schofield is in a three-way tie for the PWHL scoring lead with teammate Claire Thompson (1-10—11) and New York’s Sarah Fillier (5-6—11) and is tied with six others for the PWHL lead in goals.

NHL Stars of the Week – LT Gets Top Honors

Today the National Hockey League announced their Three Stars of the Week for the week of January 13th through 19th.

First Star – Logan Thompson (G – WAS)

    • Thompson made 61 saves on 62 shots, going 3-0-0 with a 0.33 goals-against average, .984 save percentage and two shutouts to lift the Capitals (31-10-5, 67 points) back into first place in the overall League standings. Thompson was flawless in his first two appearances, denying 19 shots in a 3-0 win over the Anaheim Ducks Jan. 14 before making 24 saves in a 1-0 overtime victory against the Ottawa Senators Jan. 16 for the first consecutive shutouts of his NHL career. He then posted 18 stops, extending his shutout streak to 198:22 before allowing a third-period goal, in a 4-1 triumph versus the Pittsburgh Penguins Jan. 18. Only two goaltenders in franchise history have recorded longer shutout sequences: Pat Riggin (Jan. 27 – Feb. 3, 1984: 203:52) and Jim Carey (March 26-31, 1996: 200:04). The 27-year-old Thompson, who was acquired by Washington during the offseason, is 21-2-3 through 26 total games this season. Just two goaltenders in League history have earned more victories through their first 26 appearances of any campaign: Tiny Thompson in 1929-30 (22-4-0) and Linus Ullmark in 2022-23 (22‑1-1), both with the Boston Bruins. Thompson also ranks among this season’s League leaders (minimum: 15 GP) in goals-against average (2nd; 2.09), save percentage (3rd; .925) and wins (t-3rd; 21).

Second Star – Filip Forsberg (LW – NAS)

    • Forsberg paced the NHL with 4-3—7 in three games to propel the Predators (16-22-7, 39 points) to a perfect week. He notched 1-1—2 in a 5-3 win over the Pacific Division-leading Vegas Golden Knights Jan. 14. Forsberg then scored the tying goal with 3:03 remaining in regulation in an eventual 3-2 shootout triumph against the Chicago Blackhawks Jan. 16. He capped the week with 2-2—4, his fifth career four-point performance and first since March 21, 2022 at ANA (2-3—5), in a 6-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild Jan. 18. The 30-year-old Forsberg leads Nashville with 15-27—42 through 45 total appearances this season, highlighted by 6-6—12 during a seven-game point streak dating to Jan. 3 and goals in five straight contests dating to Jan. 7 (6-3—9).

Third Star – David Pastrnak (RW – BOS)

    • Pastrnak registered three points in each of his two games, totaling 2-4—6 to guide the Bruins (22‑19-6, 50 points) to three out of a possible four standings points. He posted 1-2—3 in both a 6-2 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning Jan. 14 and a 6-5 shootout loss to the Ottawa Senators Jan. 18. Pastrnak, who also recorded three points Jan. 11 at FLA (2-1—3), became the 10th different player in franchise history to produce three points in at least three consecutive contests and the first since Ray Bourque from March 3-7, 1994 (0-9—9 in 3 GP). The 28-year-old Pastrnak, who tops the NHL in shots on goal this season (193), leads Boston in goals (21), assists (30) and points (51) through 47 total games in 2024-25.

Mike’s STH Xperience – Screaming Pens

Welcome to Mike’s Season Ticket Holder (STH) Xperience!

This season is my first one as a Season Ticket holder for the Washington Capitals, and in place of doing Caps Game Recaps, I’ll be sharing my experience being a STH during the 2024-25 season. Here I’ll be sharing all of the photos that I take during pregame warmups, along with any FB/IG Reels and TikToks I create at the games.

I will also be doing this for any other games I may go to, whether it’s in Hershey for the Bears, or at other NHL venues for games.

The Washington Capitals host the Pittsburgh Penguins before embarking on a two week road trip.

    #Caps50Facts

On July 11th, 2001 the Washington Capitals traded defenseman Ross Lupaschuk and forwards Kris Beech and Michal Sivek to the Pittsburgh Penguins for forward Jaromir Jagr and defenseman Frantisek Kucera.

In 2 1/2 seasons with the Capitals, Jagr recorded 83 goals and 118 assists for 201 points in 190 games played. Jagr was a two time All Star while with the Capitals.

    Thoughts on the Game

This was another good game for the Capitals as they picked up two needed points against a division rival in the Penguins. Could have been another shutout, but I’m sure Logan Thompson is wanting that one back.

Overall, another solid game from the Caps, and now it’s time for a 5-game road trip over the next two weeks for them
