Gameday Preview – 10/19/2018 – Florida Panthers v. Washington Capitals

    Time: 7p EST

    Station: NBC Sports Washington

    Preview:

The Washington Capitals play host for the final time in this home stretch before they begin their Western Canada road trip as they take on the Florida Panthers who so far have not won a game in this young 2018-19 season.

    Florida Panthers:

    Projected Lineup:

Evgenii Dadonov – Aleksander Barkov – Nick Bjugstad

Vincent Trocheck – Colton Sceviour – Jonathan Huberdeau

Frank Vatrano – Jared McCann – Denis Malgin

Mike Hoffman – Juho Lammikko – Troy Brouwer

    Keith Yandle – Aaron Ekblad

    Mark Pysyk – Alexander Petrovic

    Bogdan Kiselevich – MacKenzie Weegar

    James Reimer

    Michael Hutchinson

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Quiet the home crowd

The Panthers are going to look to want tonget on the board only and silence the home crowd in DC. By doing so they can take control of the tempo of the game, and work towards getting their first win of the season.

    Washington Capitals:

    Projected Lineup:

Alex Ovechkin – Evgeny Kuznetsov – Brett Connolly

Jakub Vrana – Nicklas Backstrom – TJ Oshie

Chandler Stephenson – Lars Eller – Andre Burakovsky

Dmitrij Jaskin – Nic Dowd – Devante Smith-Pelly

    Michal Kempny – John Carlson

    Dmitry Orlov – Matt Niskanen

    Christian Djoos – Brooks Orpik

    Braden Holtby

    Pheonix Copley

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Play a full 60 minutes

This is the biggest key for the Capitals. Against Toronto they laid off im the 3rd period and it costed them a victory. With the knowledge that Florida is looking for their first win of thw season, the Capitals should play with renewed urgency, and take it to the Panthers the full 60 minutes.

    2. Stay out of the penalty box

Sonfar the Capitals have shot themselves in the foot with bad penalties, especially by Jakub Vrana in the offensive zone, that the momentum that they are building for themselves is lost and have to retreat to the penalty kill.

    PP                 0/0                   1/1

    Analysis:

Leafs played well early but let the Pens offence in the zone for prolonged periods of time. The Pens play an aggressive offence so the puck needs to be moved quick and the Leafs defence struggled with that a bit.

    Need to Do:

Quick passes, more offensive zone time. Draw penalties.

    PP                 0/1                    1/2

    Analysis:

Leafs took over this period, but Matt Murray has played unbelieveable. Leafs need to get more traffic in front of the goaltender, right now Matt Murray is seeing everything.

    Need to Do:

Get more bodies in front of the net. Matt Murray is seeing everything and playing picture perfect tonight.

    Third Period:

Penguins Goal – 17:53– Evgeni Malkin (3) Empty Net,  Unassisted

Penguins Goal – 18:52– Kris Letang (4) Empty Net,  from Evgeni Malkin (9) and Bryan Rust (1)

    End of 3rd – TML – 0         PIT – 3

    Shots              38                   39

    Faceoffs     31/56                25/56

    Hits               21                     30

    PP                 0/1                    1/2

    Analysis:

The Leafs played a strong game ran into a hot goalie, made one mistake on the powerplay and paid for it. Frederik Andersen played unbelievable at the other end. Leafs just need to go back and remember they didn’t lose this because of any lack of effort.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins meet in a matchup with Sidney Crosby and Auston Matthews being at the forefront. Two of the most prolific players in the game today. The Leafs come in riding a 5 game win streak and looking to continue to prove the doubters that they are really this good. While the Penguins come in losing in Overtime to Vancouver 3-2. Losing Justin Schultz for 4 months is a huge hit to the Penguins blue line and Vancouver took advantage of that.

This will be another big challenge for the Leafs as the Penguins have proven they know how to win despite injuries.

4 Keys to Winning against Pittsburgh:

    1. Attack the Defence
      1. With Justin Schultz out for 4 months the Leafs must attack the defence and force them to make plays quick.
    2. Win faceoffs
      1. Puck possession is the Penguins game style. Win the faceoffs control the game.
    3. Fourth line
      1. Gauthier, Leivo and Johnsson have been a fantastic 4th line since being put together. They must continue to dominate especially against a pretty young 4th line in Pittsburgh.
    4. Force the Penguins to take a Penalties

  • Habs Win Thriller over St.Louis Blues

Habs Win Thriller over St.Louis Blues

The Montreal Canadiens defeated the St. Louis Blues in a thrilling 3-2 win. Montreal started things off early with a quick goal by Max Domi 20 seconds into the game and ended things will a Brendan Gallagher goal to give the Habs a 3-2 lead with 11 seconds left in the game. Carey Price made 23 saves in the win. With the win, the Habs improve to 4-1-1 on the season.

    Things the Habs Did Well:

    – The Habs only gave up 25 shots (22 in the final 2 periods).
    – Jesperi Kotkaniemi drew 2 penalties
    – Tomas Tatar adds another assist for the Habs and continues to look great. My only complaint about the game is the Habs took way too many penalties. Both goals by St. Louis came with the man-advantage. Habs need to clean this up if they are going to be successful all year.

Victor Mete didn’t play tonight due to a minor hand injury but should be back in the line-up on Saturday night.

The Habs ride a three-game winning streak into Ottawa when they face the Senators on Saturday Night.

Capitals Penalty – 9:35 – Nic Dowd 2 minutes for Interference

    Hits                1                   8

    PP                 0/1                 N/A

    Analysis:

This was an ok period for the Capitals. The Rangers are playing aggressive and the Capitals will have to take advantage when the Rangers get a little over aggressive, which has happened a couple of times in the Rangers zone. Great response by the Capitals with the tying goal after the Rangers took an early lead.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to do a better job of of controlling the tempo of the game. The Capitals had spurts where they controlled it, but they let the Rangers back in it too many times. The Capitals also need to keep pushing the play in the Rangers zone.

    Second Period:

Rangers Penalty – 2:09 – Brett Howden 2 minutes for Tripping

Capitals PPG – 3:32 – Alex Ovechkin (5) from John Carlson (5) and Brett Connolly (4)

Capitals Penalty – 5:39 – Jakub Vrana 2 minutes for Hooking

Rangers Penalty – 15:42 – Jesper Fast 2 minutes for Interference

Capitals PPG – 17:01 – Alex Ovechkin (6) from John Carlson (6) and Nicklas Backstrom (8)

Rangers Penalty – 19:32 – Brendan Smith 2 minutes for Interference

    End of 2nd – NYR – 2        WAS – 3

    Shots               27                 27

    Faceoffs          23                 22

    Hits                 8                    14

    PP                   1/3                 2/2 * 3rd in progress

    Analysis:

This was a good period for the Capitals, but it was a better period for the Rangers. The Rangers out shot the Capitals 18-13 that period, and forced the Capitals to take some penalties. However the Capitals forced some penalties upon the Rangers as well, and got two powerplay goals and are entering the 3rd period with time left on their 3rd powerplay.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to capitalize on this powerplay to start the period and use it to take the momentum of this game and put it in their favor. The Capitals need to also play a full 20 minutes to finish off the Rangers.

    Third Period:

Capitals Penalty – 9:20 – Nathan Walker 2 minutes for Holding

Rangers PPG – 10:25 – Chris Kreider (4) from Neal Pionk (3) and Mika Zibanejad (2)

Rangers Penalty – 14:43 – Kevin Hayes 2 minutes for High Sticking

    End of 3rd – NYR – 3         WAS – 3

    Shots              32                   36

    Faceoffs        30                    33

    Hits               13                     21

    PP                 2/4                    2/4

    Overtime:

Capitals Goal – 2:18 – Matt Niskanen (1) from Evgeny Kuznetsov (6) and TJ Oshie (3)

    End of OT – NYR – 3         WAS – 4

    Shots              32                   38

    Faceoffs        31                    35

    Hits               14                     23

    PP                 2/4                    2/4

    Analysis:

A good win for the Capitals despite blowing their one goal lead and needing overtime to win this game. The Capitals out shot the Rangers in both the 3rd period and in overtime combined, but they had their defensive relapses in their own zone plus some bad penalties taken again let the Rangers stay in this one. The Capitals need to clean up the play in their own zone, especially in front of their own net as they are giving up too many chances and goals right in the slot area.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, these are your news and notes for Wednesday, October 17th, 2018.

There were eight contests in the NHL yesterday…

    • Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers went on to defeat the Winnipeg Jets 5-4 in overtime.Connor McDavid scored twice in the contest and in doing so, McDavid continued a streak of attributing to all of the Oilers goals thus far on the season. McDavid became the first player in NHL history to record a point on all nine of the team’s goals to begin the season. The NHL record for most points by a player at any point is 15, a mark set by Jaromir Jagr in the 1999-2000 season.
    • Kyle Palmieri would score for New Jersey and became the first player in League history to score the opening goal for his team in four straight games to open up the season. Only one player has started off with five and that mark belongs to Johnny Bucyk during the 1965-66 season.

New Jersey would go on to win the contest 3-0 over the Dallas Stars.

Keith Kinkaid would go on to register 24 saves to lead the Devils to a 4-0-0 record on the season thus far. This is the fourth time in franchise history that the Devils have won at least their first four games to start off the season. The last time they started off 4-0-0 was during the 1995-96 season.

    • Vegas Golden Knights G Marc-Andre Fleury won his 407th game to move into a tie for tenth place with Glenn Hall on the all-time list for wins by a goaltender.

      https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

With this victory, Vegas surpassed the Montreal Canadiens for the second most wins all time within the first 100 regular season games at 53 wins in 89 total games played. The original Ottawa Senators had more wins (63) within 100 games. The Golden Knights play their 100th regular season game on November 11th against the Boston Bruins.
