Boston Bruins vs Toronto Maple Leafs – 11/26/2018 – Game Recap

    Game Day Lineups:

    First Period:

    Toronto Goal – 17:44 – Travis Dermott (1) from Mitch Marner (25)

    End of 1st – BOS –0       TOR – 1

    Shots              10                09

    Hits               5                  7

    PP                 0/0              0/0

    Analysis:

Both teams flying up and down the ice. Leafs got a nice goal from Travis Dermott, his first of the season. Andersen had to be big in this period as the Leafs gave up quite a few shots.

    Need to Do:

Play the uptempo game that is needed for this team to win.

    Second Period:

Toronto Penalty – 1:55 – Par Lindholm 2 minutes for Hooking

Boston PP Goal – 03:39 – David Pastrnak (18) from Brad Marchand (16) and Torey Krug (9)

Toronto Goal – 13:06 – Igor Ozhiganov (1) from Mitch Marner (26) and Frederik Gauthier (3)

Boston Goal – 14:22 – David Pastrnak (19) from Torey Krug (10) and Brad Marchand (17)

Boston Penalty – 16:58 – Anders Bjork 2 minutes for Tripping

Toronto PP Goal – 18:38 – Josh Leivo (4) from Tyler Ennis (3) and Patrick Marleau (9)

    Faceoffs          20/42            22/42

    Hits                 10                    15

    PP                   0/1                  1/1

    Analysis:

Leafs looked to come out flat in the 2nd period but always seemed to have an answer for what seemed to be the David Pastrnak show all over again.

    Need to Do:

Tighten up defensively, while still pushing the play.

    Third Period:

Toronto Goal – 18:25 – Zach Hyman (4) from John Tavares (13) and Mitch Marner (27)

    End of 3rd – BOS– 2        TOR – 4

    Shots              40                      31

    Faceoffs        25/58            33/58

    Hits               19                       23

    PP                 0/1                    1/1

     Analysis:

Leafs shut the game down in the 3rd with the help of Freddie Andersen of course. Marner had another 3 assist night to add to his already ridiculous amount of assists.

The Washington Capitals continue their Mentors Trip with a visit to the New York Islanders as they look to win their sixth game in a row when they take on their former bench boss Barry Trotz. Meanwhile the Islanders will be looking to continue building off of their win Saturday against the Carolina Hurricanes, where they are also 9-1-0 this season against Metropolitan Division rivals.

Key players to watch will be Islanders forward Anthony Beauvillier who has five goals and two assists in his past five games. While for the Capitals, Tom Wilson has been a key catalyst for the team since returning from suspension.

    Lineups:

    Washington Capitals:

Alex Ovechkin — Nicklas Backstrom — Tom Wilson

Jakub Vrana — Lars Eller — Brett Connolly

    Christian Djoos – Madison Bowey

    Braden Holtby

    Pheonix Copley

    Scratched: Jonas Siegenthaler

    First Period:

Islanders Goal – :36 – Valtteri Filppula (7) from Ryan Pulock (6) and Leo Komarov (8)

Capitals Goal – 2:50 – Tom Wilson (5) from Nicklas Backstrom (20) and Madison Bowey (4)

    End of 1st – WAS – 1       NYI – 1

    Shots              12                08

    Faceoffs         05                07

    Hits               07                  12

    PP                 0/0                 0/0

    Analysis:

Not the greatest start for the Capitals as they were scored on quickly, but how they responded was spectacular. Tom Wilson would score not much later and after that it would be all Capitals as they controlled most of the tempo of the game. Also a very fast period with very few whistles and more exciting to watch despite a few obvious penalties not being called on both teams.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to keep up with this pace of game and continue to push the play in the Islanders zone. Also the Capitals need to continue to play disciplined, and keep their feet moving and draw some penalties against the Islanders.

    Second Period:

Capitals Penalty – :20 – Alex Ovechkin 2 minutes for Cross Checking

Capitals Penalty – 4:22 – Bench (Vrana) 2 minutes for Too Many Men

Capitals Goal – 7:58 – Nic Dowd (3) from Dmitrij Jaskin (3) and John Carlson (21)

Capitals Penalty – 13:32 – Dmitry Orlov 2 minutes for Tripping

    End of 2nd – WAS – 2        NYI – 1

    Shots               15                 18

    Faceoffs          09                 19

    Hits                 13                  17

    PP                   0/0                  0/3

    Analysis:

This was not a good period for the Capitals. They were out shot 10-3, they were killed in the faceoff circle, and most importantly, they were not very well disciplined. Even though they scored the lone goal of the period, this was not an ideal period.

    Need to Do:

The Capitals need to come out with fire lit under them and ready to play a full 20 minutes. The Capitals also need to play a more disciplined game and force the Islanders to take a few penalties so the Capitals can get their powerplay unit on the ice.

    Third Period:

Capitals Penalty – 4:05 – Tom Wilson 2 minutes for Interference

Islanders Penalty – 12:04 – Tanner Fritz 2 minutes for Hooking

Islanders Penalty – 12:34 – Thomas Hickey 2 minutes for Tripping

Capitals PPG – 14:21 – Tom Wilson (6) from Nicklas Backstrom (21) and John Carlson (22)

Capitals Goal – 19:38 – Alex Ovechkin (18) from Tom Wilson (6) and Nicklas Backstrom (22)

    End of 3rd – WAS – 4         NYI – 1

    Shots              24                   33

    Faceoffs        20                    27

    Hits               19                     30

    PP                 1/2                    0/4

    Analysis:

Not the greatest third period, but the Capitals were able to find a way to steal this game from the Islanders. Once again they were dominated in the shot department but was able to make their shots count, plus Braden Holtby played a stellar game to give the Capitals the victory. Definitely a great game for Tom Wilson who registered 2 goals and an assist.

    Next Up:

    Washington (14-7-3 31pts) v. New Jersey (9-10-4 22pts)

    NY Islanders (12-9-2 26pts) @ Boston (13-6-4 30pts)

    November 26th, 2018 — News and Notes

Today is Monday, November 26th, 2018, and these are your news and notes.

There were four contests yesterday in the NHL and one contest in the NWHL…

    Calgary 6, ARIZONA 1

The Calgary Flames would register three shorthanded goals against the Arizona Coyotes in their 6-1 win last night.

The three shorthanded goals are tied for the most in franchise history.

TAMPA BAY 5, New Jersey 2

Brayden Point would end the game with two goals.  He has 10 for the month of November and is tied for third place with 17 goals on the season.

    NASHVILLE 5, Anaheim 2

Nashville’s Austin Watson would register a hat trick in the contest over the Anaheim Ducks, with Nick Bonino and Craig Smith registering the other two goals from the Nashville Predators.

    LOS ANGELES 5, Edmonton 2

Los Angeles’ Matt Luff would be the fifth different rookie to have a four-goal streak or more in franchise history in the Los Angeles Kings 5-2 win last night.

Kings captain Anze Kopitar would factor on three of the teams’ goals for the 53rd time in his career and the first on the season.

Kings Dustin Brown would also register a hat trick in the game as well.

There are five games on the NHL schedule today:

In the lone National Women’s Hockey League contest from the weekend, the Metropolitan Riveters faced off against the Connecticut Whale.

Audra Richards of the Metropolitan Riveters would net a hat trick as the Riveters would go on to defeat the Whale 4-3 in a shootout.

Riveters’ Amanda Kessel would score in the shootout to help out with the victory.

TXHT’s Christopher Vasilas has your recap of the match-up between the Riveters and the Whale at the following page.

NWHL Game Recap – 11/25/2018 – Connecticut Whale v. Metropolitan Riveters

    In NHL News today:

In a very shocking and surprising announcement, the Philadelphia Flyers announced that Executive Vice President and General Manager Ron Hextall has been fired.

Flyers President Paul Holmgren and Comcast Spectacor Chairman and CEO Dave Scott will have a press conference at 11:00am tomorrow (November 27th).

TXHT has your thoughts and coverage on the news of Hextall’s firing at the following page.

Flyers Fire Ron Hextall as GM in a Very Shocking Move

The Winnipeg Jets announced that they will wear their Heritage jerseys for two games this season.  The jerseys will be available for purchase on Friday and will be worn on December 31st at the Edmonton Oilers and then again on the Winnipeg Jets Alumni Night on February 26th, 2019 when the Minnesota Wild visit Winnipeg.

The NHL announced their Three Stars of the Week ending on November 25.

In NWHL news, Audra Richards was named the VEDA NWHL Player of the Week.  Richards registered the first NWHL hat-trick of the season in the Metropolitan Riveters 4-3 shootout win yesterday.

  • Flyers Fire Ron Hextall as GM in a Very Shocking Move

Flyers Fire Ron Hextall as GM in a Very Shocking Move

In a very shocking move this morning the Philadelphia Flyers have fired Ron Hextall as Executive Vice President and General Manager, and Team President Paul Holmgren will be overseeing the team while searching for a new General Manager. This is a move that no one saw coming, and even threw everyone off guard.

To say this was a shock is an overstatement, but when reading Holmgren’s statement he states “it has become clear that we no longer share the same philosophical approach concerning the direction of the team.” This part of the statement right here has many questions that need to be answered.

Is ownership not happy with Hextall’s slow rebuild process, where they build up the prospect pool, and develop their talent to become a contender?

Or could it be that Hextall does not want to fire head coach Dave Hakstol as he sees him as an important piece to this build, but ownership wants results now?

One way or another it is very confusing to see Hextall out as General Manager for the Flyers as he has done an amazing job rebuilding this team, and it is very ironic that the man that Hextall took over for as GM, and cleaned the mess that was left behind by Holmgren, is now overseeing the team once again until a new General Manager is hired.

I for one expect more turnover to happen in Philadelphia, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more changes happen sooner rather than later.

    Washington Capitals:

Alex Ovechkin — Nicklas Backstrom — Tom Wilson

Jakub Vrana — Lars Eller — Brett Connolly

Andre Burakovsky — Travis Boyd — Devante Smith-Pelly

Dmitrij Jaskin — Nic Dowd — Chandler Stephenson

    Pheonix Copley

    Scratched: Jonas Siegenthaler

Injured: Evgeny Kuznetsov (upper body), T.J. Oshie (concussion), Brooks Orpik (knee surgery)

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Start Strong

The Capitals lately have not been starting well, but have been finishing strong. The Capitals need to start games off strong, and play the full 60 minutes. If this were the playoffs, some of these wins they’ve gotten would have been losses if they started slow.

    2. The Trotz Effect

This will be the first time the Capitals will be facing their former head coach Barry Trotz, and they will know how he will be having the Islanders play against them, and like wise Trotz will be telling the Islanders on how to attack the Capitals. This will be a chess match between Trotz and his protege Todd Reirdon.

    New York Islanders:

    Projected Lineup:

Anders Lee — Brock Nelson — Jordan Eberle

Anthony Beauvillier — Mathew Barzal — Josh Bailey

Tom Kuhnhackl — Valtteri Filppula — Leo Komarov

Ross Johnston — Tanner Fritz — Cal Clutterbuck

    Nick Leddy — Johnny Boychuk

    Thomas Hickey — Ryan Pulock

    Adam Pelech — Scott Mayfield

    Thomas Greiss

    Robin Lehner

    Scratched: Luca Sbisa, Stephen Gionta

Injured: Matt Martin (upper body), Casey Cizikas (lower body), Andrew Ladd (lower body)

    Keys to the Game:

    1. Start Fast

On Saturday the Islanders got two quick goals to get the jump on the Hurricanes, and played a complete game to win the game. The same will need to be done against the Capitals who will be looking for their sixth consecutive victory.

  • NWHL Game Recap – 11/25/2018 – Connecticut Whale v. Metropolitan Riveters

NWHL Game Recap – 11/25/2018 – Connecticut Whale v. Metropolitan Riveters

The Connecticut Whale played a very strong game today against the Metropolitan Riveters; unfortunately, it was enough to earn them a point but not enough to seal them the victory. The good news is that there were a lot of positives to take from the game. The Whale did a much better job putting pucks on goal, having a shot total at the end of the game at 36. Their penalty kill was once again, really solid as the Riveters were 0 for 4 on the power play including one in overtime. The Whale are leading the league in Penalty Kill Percentage at 94.7 ahead of the Whitecaps and Beauts who also boast an over 90 percent PK rating. Last but not least, the already good puck movement was even better today. They look like they are building some great chemistry and look like they are turning the corner.
Here is a quick summary of the game. In the first period, the Riveters opened the scoring, a goal coming from Audra Richards. This would be her second game in a row where she would open up the scoring. Also all the goals she has scored this year have all been at home. Two minutes later, the Whale would get one back, a goal on the power play coming from girl-on-fire Katerina Mrázová and assisted by captain, leader, legend Emily Fluke. Unfortunately, with less than a minute to go in the first period, the Riveters would go ahead before the end of the period. Another goal coming from Audra Richards, and on this particular goal, it was the second assist of the game for Miye D’Oench, as this was the first game for her coming back from a campaign in Kentucky.
In the second period, it was all Whale dictating the play and getting both of the goals that came from the period. It was a little over half of the period played when the first goal came from Kayla Meneghin. It was her first NWHL goal and it came in her home state of New Jersey. The second goal of the period came while the Whale were shorthanded. It was Katerina Mrázová again who netted the goal on a beautiful feed from Michelle Löwenhielm.
The third period was good back and forth action, and it looked like the Whale were going to escape but with about nine minutes left to play, a crazy bounce off the boards and Audra Richards again got the goal, banking it in off of Meeri Räisänen. This was Richards’ third goal of the game giving her the hat trick.
Overtime had some exciting action in it too. Each team had some time on the power play but unfortunately no one could win the game in overtime, although the Riveters probably had the best chance to win the game in OT. In the shootout, the only goal came from Amanda Kessel, who got it through off of Räisänen’s glove.

    3 Stars of the Game

Katerina Mrázová: She had another excellent game today. Getting two goals for the Whale today and pushing her goal total for the year up to four goals. She also leads the team with five points and leads the team in shots on goal as well with 19.

Michelle Löwenhielm: She made it back on the list. She had a great game today, she skated well and she had the beautiful assist on Mrázová’s second goal. It was the two of them against the world and they still managed to score, shorthanded.

Kayla Meneghin: Hard to argue with putting someone on this list when she got her first NWHL goal! She also did it in her home state of New Jersey and it was certainly a goal the Whale needed at the time to gather them some momentum and tie the game.

You can check out the boxscore of this awesome game here:

The next game that the Whale play will indeed be against the Riveters again, however it won’t be in Newark, NJ. Although the Whale will be the home team, the game will be in the neutral location of Pittsburgh, PA. The Riveters and the Whale will square off at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex at 3:30p. I will be in attendance for this game and I am really excited for it. The first two games they have played against each other have been spectacular and I can’t wait for what the third straight game between these two teams will bring.

Today is Sunday, November 25th, 2018, and these are your news and notes covering the NHL and the NWHL.

    First in the NHL…

    Yesterday’s schedule of games:

    Washington 5, NY RANGERS 3

The Washington Capitals staged the 50th multi-goal comeback win on the NHL season yesterday afternoon when they defeated the NY Rangers 5-3.

Game Recap – 11/24/2018 – Washington Capitals v. New York Rangers

    TORONTO 6, Philadelphia 0

Andreas Johnsson had a hat trick, and achieved the mark in the first period.  Johnsson is the first player to score three goals in the first period since Wendell Clark on October 11, 1986.  Johnsson is the eighth player to score a hat trick in the first period.

  • Andersen getting better with age

    Andersen getting better with age

Development for player usually stops at around age 26 according to most scouts. Once a player has reaches that age usually they’re usually considered to have reached their top ceiling, whether that ceiling is a high end player or a bottom end player who struggles to stay in the NHL. Very few players are able to develop past the age of 26, but goalies are a special breed of players. Goalies seems to take much longer to develop into what is expected of them. Scouts are all over the place with estimates, but I think it’s safe to say between the ages of 28-30 is usually when you’ll be able to know what kind of goaltender you’ve gotten. Andersen seems to follow this rule but this season seems different for him.

Andersen has been a slow starter since arriving here in Toronto, his October stats have been ugly. Let me show you his stats from his first month of every year he’s played in Toronto.

    2016/2017: 2-2-3 3.67GAA .876SV%

    2017/2018: 6-5 3.46GAA .896SV%

    2018/2019: 6-4 2.53GAA .919SV%

That’s every October since he’s been in a Leafs uniform. Notice this seasons statistics are much better. Now let me show you his seasons numbers after October.

    2016/2017: 2.17GAA .922SV%

    2017/2018: 2.19GAA .922SV%

    2018/2019: 1.70GAA .957SV%

Andersen is looking like a vezina goaltender so far this season. His numbers speak for himself, on top of the fact that’s he’s one of the goalies who receives the most shots on net per game at 32 shots per game.

As you can see by numbers Andersen keeps improving with age. The 29 year old is having himself a career year so far and looks to be going strong even when the Leafs lose. Andersen has taken a lot of flack for his play last season in the playoffs against Boston and I think he took that to heart and has come to play this season. Expect big things from your goaltender this season.
